Working from home Daytime TV by Ted Bruning One of the great temptations of working from home is to make a brew, commandeer a couple of Hobnobs, and simply veg out in front of daytime TV. This is especially the case if you’re an a.m. worker like me. Once the dog is walked, the wife and kids are shooed off to their respective schools, and the teeth are scrubbed, I hit the desk running. For a couple of hours I’m a human dynamo. Emails are answered. Calls are made. Work is churned out in unstoppable torrents... And then, around mid-morning, everything goes into slow motion. The blood-sugar level sinks towards zero. Emails and calls are put off. Productivity dwindles to a trickle. I don’t know why this is, but if ever there were a time when the twin lures of the sofa and the remote might prove irresistible, this would surely be it. Fortunately, the Lords of Television, those inscrutable Olympians who select the images that will grace our screens, have in a completely uncharacteristic flash of empathy for this weakwilled and, let’s face it, bone idle worker-fromhome, made daytime TV unwatchably awful. (Of course, they have made evening TV unwatchably awful as well, but that’s another story). I pass over such delights as Prank Patrol and the WotWots because these occur during my morning surge of energy. I have no idea what they might be about, but from their titles I infer that they are intended for the amusement of beings rather younger than myself. But postsurge daytime TV, however diverse it might appear, seems to be founded on a single immutable principle: it must be as cheap as humanly possible. BBC 1 favours walkabout TV. A mid-range celebrity presenter – Pam Rhodes; Julia Bradbury; no-one too expensive – and a man with a microphone are let loose somewhere like the Chelsea Flower Show for a couple of hours. For BBC 2, it’s a black and white comedy, often with Norman Wisdom, followed by some people – again, no-one too expensive – talking in a studio.
ITV 1 favours the people talking in a studio approach, the twist being that they’re all women and they can talk for two whole hours! Awardwinning stuff, surely. Channel 4, when there’s no racing, shows endless repeats of American comedies from the 1990s. Some (Frazier) were brilliant first time round, but I’ve seen them all. Others (Will & Grace) were limp first time round, and I’ve seen as much of them as I can bear. Then there’s the awful fascination of exposé TV: Trisha Goddard, Jeremy Kyle, that sort of thing. I can add nothing useful to the oft-made observation that it’s utterly incredible that such dreadful people with such dreadful lives should queue up to have their dreadfulness so ruthlessly exposed. I can’t bear to watch them and I just want them to stop. So, finally, to the ultimate television conundrum: that whole strand of shows, regurgitated throughout the day on most freeview channels, that strive to make entertainment out of perfectly normal, humdrum activities that are utterly without incident or the power to amuse. Moving house to somewhere nicer. Taking your old tat to a car boot sale. Painting your living room. Cooking dinner for some friends. You know the shows; I won’t name them. Whatever next? Going to the supermarket (presented by Kerry Katona)? The morning ablutions (presented by Gillian McKeith)? Driving to work, perhaps? Ah, now, as someone who hasn’t driven to work for four years, that’s a daytime TV programme I might actually watch...

18 Adult Acne Although acne is more common in adolescence, many adults also suffer flare-ups. This can be brought about by hormonal changes due to pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause, or stress. A poor diet can also be a factor and consuming too much caffeine, alcohol, salt or sugar can play havoc with our skin. Whatever the cause, to combat acne successfully, the best way to treat it is from the inside out. A healthy diet is essential in caring for your skin with lots of fluid intake (of the non-alcoholic kind) and fresh fruit and vegetables. However, once your diet is perfect, there are a number of other factors which can help to eliminate acne if it persists. An excellent product for acne is a face peel. One with natural products will extract bacteria from pores and
encourage new skin growth. Another great treatment for oily skin is a clay mask. If you use a mask containing St. John’s Wort and chamomile the ingredients can help to eradicate stressrelated acne. These two substances are not only good for the skin, but also promote overall health. You should also look for products with seawater extract, algae and/or lime. Cornflower is also said to be good for acne control, so search out masks and gels with that as one of the ingredients. Treating acne and oily skin in adults means a change from your normal skin care regime, but the condition can be cured with the right diet and skin care products.

Plant of the Month
Snapdragon - Antirrhinum majus Snapdragons are particular favourites with children who love to pinch the individual velvety flowers to make their ‘mouths’ open and close. It has to be admitted that many adults still gain pleasure from this amusement. Antirrhinums are herbaceous perennials with long blossomloaded flower spikes available in a variety of pastel shades, bright colours and even bi-coloured species. The name, Antirrhinum, comes from the Greek words ‘anti,’ meaning like, and ‘rhin,’ meaning nose, and the flowers certainly do have the appearance of a creature’s nose. Snapdragons make excellent cut flowers and cutting them will encourage production of new stems that will bloom later in the season. Individual flowers on the spike open gradually from the base to the top. Deadheading will also prolong the flowering period. A single plant may produce half a dozen flower spikes during the summer. Various sizes are sold from dwarf plants (20-28cm) for the front of the border to tall cultivars reaching over a metre high and requiring staking. As with most plants, they flourish best in full or partial sun in a well drained, well-fertilized soil. With their vertical aspect, snapdragons make a colourful and dramatic focal point in a mixed bed.

Caerphilly events update
Well hello all – this is my first time to write to you all! My colleague Stacy is rushing around the Big Cheese site this week – I shouldn’t laugh because that will be me in a couple of weeks when we have the Kite Night and Bedwellty & County Show at the Showfields in Blackwood. Our brand new event kicks off on the evening of the 20th August from 6pm until 10pm. Some of you may be aware that we have decided to move away from the hot air balloons and bring back the fantastic kite display that we held in Parc Penallta in 2007. We have international kite fliers coming from France who will put on a fantastic display for us with Rokkaku fight (cutting kites out of the air), power kites (large kites pulling a 3-wheeled buggy around the arena), altitude sprint (a competition to see which flier can get their kite the highest in a given time – kites can reach 1000ft in this time – normally between 30 seconds and 2 minutes), Chinese dragons (4 or 5 versions of these) and much much more. The evening will end with a fireworks finale at 9.30pm which opens an exciting weekend that will include the first ever TWO day Bedwellty & County Show. This year we are working with Bedwellty Agricultural Society to extend the popular agricultural show by adding a food and drink market and family entertainment. Staying with the animal theme, there will be ‘Toy Story Shires’, ‘The Quack Pack’, ‘Black Mountain Falconry and Gun Dogs’, ‘Paws for Thoughts Dog Display’, ‘Ferret Racing’ and lots more. The many traditional agricultural displays of animals will also be present at this FREE family event on Saturday 21st & Sunday 22nd August. It’s open 8.30am until 6pm each day and includes hunter displays, side saddle and show jumping. So why not come up and join us in Blackwood for this fun packed weekend? The showfield is easily accessible by a service bus and a free shuttle bus will be put on for Sunday from Blackwood interchange bus station up to the event site. For those of you that came to Caerphilly town for the Flower Festival – I hope that you took the opportunity to visit the Churches to see their spectacular displays. The work and effort that these committed people put into their displays was outstanding. The town centre saw the footfall figures rise (this is the number of pedestrians on
the street) on this particular weekend with a coach coming all the way from Halesowen in Dudley! Lets hope that they enjoyed our historical town so much that they return for another visit. I do hope you enjoy the Big Cheese event because it will all be over by the time this goes to print – but don’t forget we do have more FREE events going on throughout the year – a full list can be found on the main Council website – www.caerphilly.gov.uk/ events Have fun all! Picnic season Picnics
P
icnics are a great British summertime tradition. Whether it’s a day out with friends and family, a rainy day surprise for the children on the carpet or a romantic feast for two with champagne and strawberries, a picnic never fails to lift the spirits. Eating al fresco is best when the decision is taken spontaneously. Planned days-out invariably trigger torrential rain on the specified day. So keep ‘grab and go’ food in your fridge and freezer ready for when you wake up to a beautiful day. Picnics should be stress-free and fun, so if you are inviting friends ask them all to contribute a little something. All families have their own picnic staples and you could be inspired by the choices of others. Some foods are just perfect for picnicking: cooked hams, pork pies, Scotch eggs, pasties, quiches, and of course, sandwiches are most people’s basics. Sandwiches are better assembled on the rug. Pre-made ones have a tendency to go soggy, so pack fillings separately and try some different breads, such as focaccia, pitta and ciabatta, for a change. Include some pâtés and ready-made dips with breadsticks and vegetable sticks. Mediterranean-style salads are a great summertime choice, and when made with couscous and beans, are
filling and healthy. A bowl or two of olives add a little sophistication to an essentially casual meal. Don’t rule out hot food either. Rotisserie chickens, sausage rolls and soup all work well. Double wrap the food in foil and keep the soup in Thermos flasks. Cold soups such as gazpacho are also a tasty
option for a hot day. Desserts can include cakes, biscuits, cheeses and fruit, although bananas never seem to travel any distance particularly well. As for drinks, take whatever you want, but plastic glasses are a better option with children running around. Stay ‘food-safe’. Most foods should be eaten within an hour or two of being prepared; less if you have packed warm food. If your journey is likely to be longer than this, invest in a cool bag or box with ice blocks to keep the cold food chilled. Alternatively freeze bottles of water or squash and pack these by the food. When you are ready to eat, the drinks should be slushy and deliciously cold. Don’t let food sit in the sun for long and keep it covered whenever possible to avoid insects snacking on it. If in any doubt at all, don’t eat it. Take some anti-bacterial hand wash with you in case there’s nowhere to wash your hands before eating. Plenty of wet wipes and a box of tissues are a great idea too, as are a good knife, a bottle opener and salt and pepper. Even if the picnic is held in your own garden it is still a big treat, especially for children, and another way of keeping them entertained in the summer holidays.

Focus on a Creative Business
Valley Craft | Aberbargoed Valley Craft has only been trading for a year but it has gone from strength to strength in a very short space of time. Valley Craft started out life simply as a place for card crafters to come and buy paper and card for their card making projects but has expanded to include decoupage, embellishments, parchment, craft tools, punches and a whole lot more. It has grown so much so that in September, the craft shop will be expanding further by moving to the unit right next door and will take up the whole space. The shop will no longer be just for card making supplies but will also stock wool, cross-stitch, embroidery, jewellery making and kids crafts with a view to expanding into numerous other areas.
There will also be a seating area with refreshment facilities as well as plenty of workshops, demonstrations and classes on a wide range of crafting subjects. Look out for further details in future issues of My Local View Magazine. Happy crafting!

Wayne David MP
The importance of community People often bemoan the fact that the sense of “community” is not as strong as it once was. Having being brought up in a small, former mining community, I often heard stories about how people left their front doors open and regularly popped into Mrs Evans’ next door to borrow some sugar. Undoubtedly, society has changed. It is not uncommon for neighbours to have virtually no contact with each other, and for people to walk no further than the short distance to their cars. It is of course unrealistic to pretend that the clock can be turned back. In fact, it is worth remembering that there is a human tendency to look back at the past through rosetinted glasses. It is always worth bearing in mind that in South Wales mining communities the strong sense of community was always laced with the fear of a mining accident. We need to look no further than Senghenydd. But during the summer months there is an outburst of genuine community activity. Throughout the constituency, community organisations organise a wide variety of fêtes and similar events. Sometimes it is the churches and chapels who organise them, like St Gwladys Church in Bargoed or the churches and chapels of Bedwas. Sometimes it is community partnerships such as in Penybryn, Cascade or Bargoed.
Secure your Home with CLEAR CHOICE WINDOWS
Or it might be the local school, as in Hendredenny. What all these different events have in common is that they bring people together and help to create a genuine sense of “community”. Usually, the reality is that such events depend on the initiative and hard work of one or two individuals. Sometimes communities are simply lucky in having these individuals within their midst. But, increasingly it is recognised that it is necessary to encourage, support and sometimes train individuals to take on these responsibilities. In the jargon this often referred to as “capacity building”. By whatever route such volunteers come forward, one thing is certain: such individuals are worth their weight in gold. The sense of community may not be as strong as it once was and it may take different forms. But, what is certain is that there are few of us who wish to live our lives simply as individuals. So, during the summer months my message is clear: get out and enjoy the fêtes - and make a commitment to help organise some events yourself!

42 Keep fit for the brain by Lorraine Mace
Neurobics, invented by Lawrence Katz and Manning Rubin, are mental exercises, teasers and puzzles designed to give your brain a good workout – and anyone can do them. Because our everyday actions are largely automatic, they require less brain activity than behaviour that causes us to think. Imagine cleaning your teeth with the ‘wrong’ hand, or switching your cutlery so that you are using the knife in the fork hand and vice versa – these are examples of neurobic exercises which are said to slow aging of the brain. Using all your senses in different ways to the norm, even making small changes in your daily routine, can stimulate the brain – and the beauty of it is that neurobics can be done anywhere and at anytime. Apparently, using your left hand if you’re right-handed, or your right if you’re left-handed, will stimulate parts of the brain that aren’t normally in use. To qualify as a neurobic exercise the action has to engage your attention and make the brain work. In other words, it has to be different from the way you tackle everyday events. You have to make your activities unusual, fun and/or surprising. Fortunately, this isn’t difficult to do.
needed when bathing •
When you get home, don’t look for your key, feel for it instead and then unlock the door with your eyes closed – this forces your sense of touch to take over
•
Use your opposite hand to operate the TV remote control
•
Rearrange your desk so that nothing is where your brain expects to find it
•
Put a new fragrance next to the bed so that you smell it on waking – this immediately stimulates up your sense of smell
•
Empty your purse or wallet, close your eyes and try to distinguish the coins by sense of touch only – if you get really good at that, try working out the notes by size and feel
•
Change your normal weekend activities to something completely different or unexpected. If you are an outdoor person, try an indoor sport such as ten pin bowling. If you’re an indoor person, try going to the park or nearest green area.
•
Turn the sound off on the television and get your partner or a friend to take turns in making up the dialogue – apart from anything else, you’ll end up laughing, which is always good for body and mind.
Examples of neurobic workouts •
Instead of following the usual roads, why not drive to work or the train station using a different route?
•
Lay out your clothes on the bed and then get dressed with your eyes closed
•
As already mentioned, try brushing your teeth with the other hand – this is nowhere near as easy as you might imagine
•
Shower or bath with your eyes closed – this engages senses not usually
Even if you only do one thing each day that is out of the norm, your brain will thank you for it by becoming more active.

44 The Mole by Marge Butcher Moles are barrel shaped, approximately 6 inches long and weigh about 3½ ozs. Their fur is soft and shiny, lies well in any direction and appears black or slate grey according to how the light catches it. A mole’s small eyes are hidden well back in the fur and its ears are flapless holes. The pink snout is pointed and heavily whiskered. Their sense of hearing and touch are well developed but sight and smell are poor. For most of their lives moles live entirely underground in tunnels dug with shovel shaped, out-turned front feet. There is one main tunnel with subsidiary branches, some 2-8 inches underground. The shallowest are made by the mole burrowing just beneath the surface and displacing the soil into ridges. Deeper tunnels are made by the mole as it excavates by pushing soil ahead, periodically thrusting it upwards to form a molehill at the surface. Despite its small size a mole can excavate 10lb of earth in 20 minutes!
Tunnelling begins from a main ‘fortress’ which is larger than a normal molehill. This is used for sleeping and breeding. Moles tunnel to feed on insect larvae, slugs, beetles and earthworms. Generally a solitary animal, the mole only makes contact with its own kind during the breeding season from March to May. The young are a litter of 2 – 6 pink, furless and blind creatures, born April to June in the underground fortress. A nest is made of dried grass, leaves and moss. The baby moles’ fur grows in the first three weeks and they are suckled by the female until they leave the nest when 5 weeks old.
the old English moulde meaning earth and werper meaning to throw. Moles are not loved by gardeners and farmers as they can do considerable damage to the roots of crops and grass. Mole catchers were once employed by farmers to catch them and were paid for each mole caught. Mole’s natural predators are owls and foxes. In some parts of England the mole is known as the ‘mouldiwarp’ this is from

That’s a Funny Thing to Say! A diamond in the rough –a person who is good hearted but lacks refinement This expression is more commonly used as the shortened version ‘rough diamond’. It literally refers to the original state of a diamond before it is cut and polished. It was used in the 17th century: She is very honest, and will be hard to cut as a rough diamond (John Fletcher: A Wife for a Month 1624) Out of sorts – unwell This is believed to come from the world of printing, possibly in the 17th century. Typesetters used individual letters to make up the text needed for the printing press. These were called ‘sorts’. To be out of sorts, possibly of a particular type or font, or with the letters in the wrong order would be a major problem for the typesetter.
A red rag to a bull – to annoy someone ‘Red rag’ was actually the slang term for the tongue in the 17th century, so to wave a red rag at someone simply meant to talk to them. There is evidence of using the term in connection with other animals e.g pheasant, turkey and viper. However linking the phrase to a bull is inaccurate as bulls are unable to recognise colours - just waving the cloth enrages it. Out for the count – in a sound sleep or dead drunk The origin of this is to be found in the world of boxing and wrestling. When a fighter is knocked to the ground the referee starts to count to ten aloud so that the audience can hear. If the fighter is unable to return to their feet within that time the fight is lost and they are ‘counted out’.

The local Jobhunter Tense, nervous headache?....Take Anadin! While most other two year olds were busy contemplating that day’s shenanigans on Button Moon, I enjoyed nothing more than settling down in front of a good advert! I was the proverbial advertiser’s dream customer, or at least I would have been if I’d been tall enough to reach the front door, knew my way to the shops and had any money. Twenty-two years later, I’m still the only one in my home NOT complaining when the T.V ads come on. My degree in Journalism, Film and Media taught me a lot about writing and the media world in which I so much want to be a part of. After graduating, all I needed to do was find my perfect advertising career and let my creativity lose. Unfortunately, the rose-tinted glasses soon came off. Advertising seems to be an exclusive club: one that I’m finding impossible to gain membership to. I’ve pondered offering my services as a char-lady free of charge, but who would pay my bills?

Thought for the Month
Which way Our current overseas holiday destination is Cala Galdana in Menorca; it’s a gorgeous blue water cove, with forested headlands either side – just what the doctor ordered! Last year I wandered off; leaving my beloved and my latest Jeffrey Deaver book on the beach, to go off exploring one of the headlands in the heat of the Spanish sun. I think there is more than a little bit of ‘Dora the Explorer’ in me, and it didn’t take long for me to get lost among the myriad of unmarked and often overgrown paths which can lead you deeper and deeper into the dense Pine and Olive thickets. With no other people in sight, all I had for company was the constant chirruping chorus of the Cicadas, invisibly laughing at me from the foliage. With no water and a baking midday sun, I stumbled sweating between pockets of shade, hoping that I would find some sign of civilisation… well actually just a simple sign would be good - to direct me back towards the resort….and my surely, very worried beloved. Imagine my relief when eventually I saw a large finger post sign in the distance, despite my now sweat blurred vision I considered it a thing of great beauty and hurried tripped towards my ‘saviour sign’….and this is what I found….
I have accurately translated this for you, ‘it’s up to you, either way works for us, we can’t tell you where you’ll end up, it’s either this way or that way…good luck, Ole!’ And now a year later as I lie on that same beach, wondering if I dare try that little Safari again, I found myself thinking that life is a bit like that sweaty Spanish Stroll. We walk through life looking for directions; every day brings choices and consequences … what to do? Now, it seems that increasingly frowned upon to say this is the right way, or that way is the wrong way. The groovy mantra of the 1960’s ‘If it feels right do it’ - which leads so often to confusion, it seems to have become everyone’s right ….even if it is wrong. So how do we work out what is right and what is wrong? What is truth? ….. Big big questions… and what I am discovering is that the Bible doesn’t just give us a long list of rules to show me right from wrong, it gives us a person; Yep the truth is a person! Jesus said quite clearly ‘I am the way, the truth and the life – no man comes to the Father except by me’. It no good just being able to recite the rules parrot fashion, that is enough to put anyone off – and it is what we in the church have been guilty of so often in the past (sorry about that folks), sounding every bit the self righteous hypocrites we are accused of… Jesus invites us to follow him, not just rules, to get to know him and his ways; to know the heart, not just the letter, of the law. Attitude and actions speak much louder than words, and there is a whole world of lovely people out there looking for directions …
Presumably having employed the rather expensive services of a leading Spanish sign consultant, the local authorities had proudly erected this rather fine and robust wooden sign. It was a masterpiece in every sense, other than its ability to tell lost, sweaty and sunburnt tourists how to get home, which given my predicament was frankly a little disappointing. It seemed to be saying, and I hope
I just hope we can be more effective than that fine wooden sign! Roger Crookes - rogercrookes@lcsuk.net

The Legal Eagle
When it goes wrong: Holiday Compensation Volcanic Ash, Cabin Crewe Strikes and holiday companies going bust have all hampered holiday makers this year, when they are either stranded abroad or have had their trip cancelled. Even those who get to their destination however, without difficulties can often be disappointed if their overall holiday does not fulfil their expectations. Measuring someone’s disappointment can be difficult to assess in money terms. Such claims are largely dealt with in the Small Claims Court, but unusually a case has recently reached the Court of Appeal – who has now provided guidance on assessment of claims for a ruined holiday. In the judgement of that case (Milner v Carnival (t/a Cunard) 2010) “brackets” of awards were referred to. Compensation appears to be at highest for holidays involving marriage where awards could range from £4,360 to £4,406, then for honeymoons from £321.00 to £1,890.
“Compensation appears to be at highest for holidays involving marriage” Special holidays from £264.00 to £1,161.00 and family normal holidays from £83.00 to £876.00. Consideration will be given to out of pocket expenses, physical inconvenience and distress together with reduced value of holiday when assessing the claim You are not entitled to a full refund of the total cost of the holiday. Our machines cost over £30,000 and are over 20 times more powerful than the small low-grade, electric powered portable machines used by other carpet cleaners. Our machines commonly clean cinemas & bars, so when you call us to clean your home you will experience a far superior & much faster cleaning process, basically the same service as our big commercial clients How does it Work? Our machines are fixed into the vehicles, they run on fuel & have their own water tank, similar to a fire engine, we simply run 2 pipes into your home, the 1st pipe is similar to a jet-wash which sprays our 100% safe detergent solutions into the carpet, the second pipe disperses steam at 240 degrees Fahrenheit hot enough to kill germs, bacteria & all carpet bugs which then gets extracted into our on board waste tank. This process is the best; most thorough clean you can have for your home
