Caerphilly events update

Hi all, The office is getting busy as our first events kick off on 1st March with 4 town centre St David’s Day celebration concerts. This is the first time we’ve staged St David’s Day events so next month we’ll report back on how they went! The end of March sees Bargoed host its increasingly popular ‘Open Air Cinema’. Experience outdoor viewing at Bargoed Emporium Car Park on the 30th March - 7.30pm where you will have a chance to see Alvin and the Chipmunks - Chipwrecked!!!! This seems to have gone down very well already with many families telling us they will be coming along. Bring your deckchairs, wrap up warm and don’t forget the popcorn! The following day on Saturday 31st March from 10am until 4pm, Bargoed Emporium Car Park will be transformed into a Spring Fayre. There will be plenty to see and do with craft stalls, Punch & Judy, street entertainers, circus skills workshops and face painting. We are very excited to be organising special events this year to commemorate the Titanic 100th anniversary. Opening on Good Friday, 6th April 2012 an exhibition in The Winding House, New Tredegar will feature Artie Moore from Gelligroes Mill - who received RMS Titanic’s SOS call on his home-made radio receiver. The new exhibition will also explore the story of Titanic and some local links in this 100th anniversary year of her sinking, as well as focusing on life in South Wales at the turn of the century. The Winding House is urging anyone with relevant objects or images dating from the 1890’s to 1914 to get in touch with The Winding House on 01443 822666 - this exhibition will run for the rest of the year.

a special event radio station at Gelligroes Mill to recreate the famous moment when Artie Moore picked up the first message of the sinking of the Titanic....the message that noone believed!!! Wayne David - MP for Caerphilly

Care for the Elderly The other day I was impressed to be contacted by HC-One, the new owners of 4 of Southern Cross’ care homes for the elderly in Caerphilly. You will recall that Southern Cross collapsed last year and there was a real concern that elderly residents would be left destitute. Buyers were found for these care homes and when I met the Director of Government Relations with HC-One he was keen to impress upon me just how seriously his company took the care of the elderly in the company’s homes. He explained to me that, in his view, the standard of the 4 care homes was currently “not good” or “only satisfactory”. However, he impressed upon me the determination of his company to ensure that the quality of the homes significantly improved as quickly as possible. Yes, HC-One is a private company and it exists to make a profit. But this does not mean there can be any excuse for not achieving and maintaining the highest possible standards. In a society where life expectancy is increasing significantly, it is essential that the quality of life of elderly people is always seen as being of the utmost importance.

A few years ago, a constituent came to one of my advice surgeries and expressed concern about the care her elderly relative was receiving in a privately owned local care home. I soon found out that this constituent’s concerns were shared by many other people and that “elder abuse” was occurring in some privately owned care homes within the Caerphilly Borough. A police investigation led to a number of arrests of individuals and successful convictions, and those police inquiries are ongoing. I mention this because I genuinely believe that how our elderly people are looked after and cared for should be a mark of a truly civilised society. All of us have a responsibility to ensure that all care homes – private and public – have the best possible standards.

Caerphilly Miners Centre Campaign

Celebrating Wales’ newest charity Caerphilly Miners Centre for the Community is celebrating becoming a registered charity in February.

Meanwhile Caerphilly Miners is pressing on with the drive to attract new members, volunteers prepared to offer their time, and residents willing to pledge their support for the project.

This is another positive step in our campaign to take over the Beeches (the original building of the Caerphilly Miners Hospital) as a community social enterprise.

If you’d like to join us, volunteer, express your support or get a copy of our latest newsletter, please contact Katherine Hughes, Secretary on 029 2088 6569 or katherine.hughes@btconnect.com.

It gives us access to new sources of funding and makes every penny we raise go further. The project has ambitious plans to create opportunities for training, learning and volunteering and day respite care, working with others and serving all parts of the community. Its partner, United Welsh Housing Association, is committed to lease the building to the project, providing that funding for the refurbishment is awarded in July.

Dr Roger’s Gardening Surgery

Time for some Garden cut backs! Well spring comes marching in – and we need to be marching out, into our gardens. There is so much we can do in March – we could easily create a ‘Local view gardening supplement’, so I had to chose 1 main job to cover in this months edition … I want to encourage you get out your Secateurs and do some cutting back - particularly Roses Pruning does more than just tidy up plants; if you do it now, you can • Encourage more flowers (This is true for most summer flowering plants like Roses) • Encourage fresh, bushy new growth – instead of ‘leggy’ thin twigs • Cut out diseased / dead wood and encourage healthy growth

For Roses, it is important to do this pruning now to achieve all the above – especially all those rich summer flowers. So how to prune? You may have to be cruel to be kind – Roses can be cut back by at least 50% at this time of year, so don’t

be shy – Our Roses are about 1 metre high, and will only be about 25 cms (1 foot) high by the time I have finished with them!

If you look down the stems you should see some tiny little buds on the bark – make your cut about 5-10mm above the bud, and by next month you should be able to see the bud bursting into life with a strong new shoot.

The last part of the pruning job is to feed the plant – pruning encourages new growth and flowers, and some Fertilizer sprinkled around the base of the plant at the same time will help enormously. My favourites are Toprose (great on most flowering plants), or Vitax Q4. Both are available in most garden centres and will go on feeding for months …right up to the time when you start picking your first summer flowers …. For more info – contact me at apairofcrookes@lcsuk.net Tel: 02920 864730 www.youtube.com/user/ rogthegardener1

Jeff Cuthbert A.M. for Caerphilly

As 2012 is the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives, I felt that it would be very appropriate to focus my contribution this month on the role of co-operatives in the Welsh economy. In particular, I want to look at the many benefits of credit unions. Credit unions are financial co-operatives that are owned and controlled by their members, making them much more similar to the old, mutually-owned building societies rather than a typical, commercially-run high street bank. Their first priority is their members, not shareholders. There are two credit unions at work serving local communities in the Caerphilly constituency – Smart Money, based in Caerphilly town; and the Bargoed, Aberbargoed and Gilfach Credit Union based further up the Rhymney Valley. Both are owned and managed by their members, and provide savings and easy-access, low-cost loans – especially to vulnerable people who may not be able to obtain ordinary bank accounts. This is particularly important given the worrying (and growing) trend of people borrowing money from loan sharks to make ends meet. Some loan sharks operate outside the law and often prey on the most vulnerable people in society, including the unemployed and single-parent families.

April 2012 deadline is Wednesday 21st March

To help combat these criminals, the Welsh Government has provided £62,000 of funding to organisations like credit unions to tackle the problem of illegal money lenders. Credit unions have become popular in recent years as many people have seen them as more reliable, safer and customer-focused than high street banks during the turmoil of the global financial crisis. Co-operative credit unions have a long tradition in Wales although they are much more common in other countries – in Ireland, for example, one in two people is a member! There is no reason why Wales cannot be an international leader for the co-operative movement. Our Valleys communities have a strong tradition of cooperation and mutualism, and credit unions are an important part of that. I would urge you to find out more about your local credit union. Is law the career path for you?

Making a decision as to what degree to study is one of the hardest choices, that is if your preferred career path is further and higher education. If you are at the stage where you feel that law interests you, you may be surprised to note that you are one of many. The United Kingdom is in fact one of the most popular destinations to study law, and thereafter practice. Why? We ask. Our legal system was in fact transported across continents and arguably it could be said that it was imposed in Canada, USA, West Indies and New Zealand, but to name a few. This adoption by these countries meant that their legal systems were based and do in fact continue to be based upon the legal process what is called ‘common law’.

It can be seen that some Countries have developed their own rules and case law as time has passed. However, the recognition of the English Law Degree is well recognised not only in the United Kingdom, but also far a-field. So, if you are thinking of the best institutions as where to study, it is well advised to research the various Universities. Thought for the Month

The power of a nations dream! Something stuck me the other day as I was reading a book, the author happened to mention JF Kennedy and the ‘space race’ of the 1960’s - when JFK announced the American dream to land a man on the moon, it caught the imagination of a generation. Now – we could quite possibly point out that the space race was a huge waste of money and at first glance that may well be the case. We didn’t discover oil on the moon, or some new amazing source of energy. We did I am sure discover all sorts of new technologies, and engineering skills which will still help us for years to come. But I think, most importantly, the people of America, were caught up in a sense of adventure, excitement, destiny and determination – they worked hard to see their nations dream fulfilled. Factory workers made an extra effort, farmers pushed up production, mothers and teachers were grooming a future generation for a country they were proud of … and that I suspect is the key – They were proud if their country. How do they, and we, feel about our countries Now? Are we proud? Do we sense adventure, excitement, destiny and determination?

Thinking about it – I guess that the 2nd world war was our ‘finest hour’. We were again united and determined by a shared vision, led by a slightly less glamorous, but equally inspiring, leader in the rotund shape of Mr Winston Churchill. The Bible says in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” I hear lots of politicians churning out ‘visions’ backed up by pages of policies, but somehow it goes over my head, and nowhere near my heart … and you know what?... I feel like we want a vision, that there is a battle to be won, that we could ‘make do and mend’ our nation. Any other dreamers out there?

Local residents determined to raise a million!

Jamie Pritchard and Louise Kirton are residents of Caerphilly who have decided to take on the immense challenge of raising a million pounds to donate to charity. They say “We both feel strongly about fundraising and charities. We have both worked, donated and raised funds for charities for many years. The idea of asking a million people for just £1 doesn’t seem out of reach. The million raised will then be split four ways and quarter of a million will go to each charity”. Autism Cymru – Helping to shape the future of individuals with Autism and their families through policy, education and training. Princes Trust - is a youth charity that helps change young lives. Putting them through a range of programs to help them upskill. Ty Hafan - Offering comfort, care and support to lifelimited children, young people and their families

Louise says “I’m a single mum of 2 and know that if someone were to ask me for just £1 towards a charity, I would give, both my daughters have given £1 each out of their pocket money to start off the cause”. Jamie says “We’re determined to work tirelessly to achieve our aim, no matter how rich or poor, if a million people give up the price of just a cup of tea, the target can be reached”. We are appealing for sponsors to support us in our venture, anything that can be done to help would be very much appreciated. Please contact either Louise (07854 726159) or Jamie (07854 348033) or email stamtram@hotmail.co.uk to offer your support.

History of Llanbradach Bowling Club

44

Llanbradach Bowls Club was established in 1901.We have been looking at the history of the club and this month the focus is on the years 1930 - 1934. 1930 - Llanbradach was to have the first children’s park under the Miners Welfare fund it was regarded as a model for all Wales parks. 1931 - Welsh Singles Champion! Despite the adverse weather conditions that had occasioned postponement of play during the opening week, the final tie in the nineteenth annual tournament organised by the Dinas Powis Bowling Club was decided on Saturday and the distinction of being declared Welsh Singles Champion for the season was gained by Mr W.H Harris (Llanbradach). No empty honour this even though the successful finalist is a player of international standing. Extended by worthy players, Mr Harris was at his best in the semi final stage and so outstanding in character was the play in his test with Mr. G. William that the game was referred to by Sir T.P. Thomas and Mr D.J Williams (president of the Welsh Bowling Association) as having been unsurpassed in any tournament brought under notice. 1932 - Club down to 42 members, most paid £1.00 membership others paid 10/- and 5/-. The financial position at bank: Cash in Bank £6.18/- Cash in Hand £4-1-6d

Ladies committee presented a tea service to the club. Mr Chappels’ contract for green advice was terminated for not complying with his promise. His fee of £20 was withheld and put aside for green maintenance. 1934 - C Palmer and L Dowling appeared before the Welfare Hall committee with regard to the £4.4/- total bill which represented £2.2/- lighting bill per annum.. They told the committee that in 1932 and 1933 they had not used electricity in so much as the table tennis team had not played for 2 years. It was resolved that the club pay £2.2/- in full settlement and not the £4.4/- due. A Press report headed by the title “Clever Bowls Player” it was stated that Llanbradach produces good cricketers it also produces good bowlers too, for instance the Cardiff and District Private Green Cup ( The Cratchley Bowl) has been won by T J Head for the second year in succession. Mr Head is an extremely good player and in addition to the PG cup, has won the club Championship cup. Spooky goings on at the Indoor Market

Caerphilly Indoor Market originally opened in 1929 and many people still have fond memories of the market of their youth. With an eclectic selection of indoor shops, and a central square that can hold a number of table top sales, the market is officially celebrating its first anniversary on Saturday, 3rd March. There will be live music, cheer-leaders, face-painting, and other activities on this day so come along for the fun.

Many traders report strange experiences, and recordings by tape and camcorder suggest spooky goings-on. Help us raise money for Toms Dream by sponsoring these plucky girls in Caerphilly’s own version of Most Haunted – whoooooh!.

For more information contact mail@caerphillyindoor-market.com or look on the web-site: http://www.caerphilly-indoor-market.com.

The market is also fund-raising for ‘Toms Dream’ and Dave has bravely agreed to raise sponsorship by having his beard and moustache shaved off with a cut-throat razor! Sweeney Todd, eat your heart out!
