Working from Home : The Kitchen

God, how I hate the kitchen! It’s always there, sitting squarely across the route from my office to the downstairs loo, ready to entangle the unwary, the unlucky, or the weak-willed. And although I know it’s there, and what horrors it holds, how often has it been my downfall. It’s a nice kitchen. Cream-coloured shaker-style units, granite-effect worktops, posh tiled floor, walls painted a restful pale green, tasteful tiled surrounds, some of my wife’s stained-glass panels hanging in the window casting coloured pebbles of sunlight across the room – it’s a looker, all right. And it’s got all the kit you need, too: double stainless-steel sink and drainer, electric fan oven, dishwasher, separate fridge and freezer tucked away under the worktops, walk-in larder – if you saw it you’d wish it was yours. But looks can be deceptive... When I worked in an office – oh halcyon days! – lunchtime was lunchtime. Years and years ago, come one o’clock the team heaved themselves upright, unslung their jackets from the backs of their chairs, and headed off down the pub for a pie and a pint and then another pint, and if there was time another pint. Then back to the ranch for a doze. But in more recent and more health-conscious years it was a quick trot down to Safeway for a Thai green curry wrap or a chicken, tomato and basil pannini or even a sushi to take back to the desk. (No crumbs on the keyboard, please.) My point being that once you’d had your pie and pint or your sushi or whatever, that was it. No more food until teatime. Those were the days. Now, every time I want a pee or need some loo-roll to blow my nose on, I have to brave the dangers of The Calorie Zone. Yes, my friends, here be biscuits. Here be a slice of bread and butter – surely one can’t harm, and fresh bread and butter is so nice – and here, sometimes, be cake. Reckoning weight gain at 3,500 calories per pound and a chance encounter with a biscuit at about 200 calories, I put on a pound for every 17.5 trips to the loo. That’s EVERY SIX WORKING DAYS. The good news is that I’ve become fairly snackresistant now and somehow I’ve managed not to put on a pound every six working days. But the fridge and larder aren’t finished with me yet, oh no. Once daily pub going had become no longer acceptable, an office lunch used to be a fairly modest affair, especially on the days when I opted for a Safeway sushi. But my own kitchen has fresh granary bread and a huge hunk of mature Cheddar in it, just waiting to be turned into cheese on toast, my arteryclogging, calorie-laden favourite. And sometimes there’s a salami, all salt and fat, begging to have a few thick slices chopped off it. I could mention pork pie and sweet pickle, but perhaps I’d better not. At least in my office days I had to trek down to Safeway for my lunch, and go down the stairs and up them again every time I wanted to photocopy something, or gaze fondly upon the receptionist, or answer a summons from the Chief Executive. At least in my office days I had to walk from my house to the car and then from the car to my office. Gosh, those were hectic times - I was almost fit. Not any more, though. That damned kitchen. That damned, damned, damned, damned kitchen! Ted Bruning

St. Martin’s Church Fete needs help!

Every year, there is a St Martin’s Church Fete in Caerphilly – no doubt people remember happy days gone by when we held the Fete in the grounds of the Old Rectory on St Martin’s Road. I remember bouncy castles, water sponges thrown at the stocks, strawberries and cream on the lawn, etc. etc. As you are no doubt aware, we can no longer use the Old Rectory – it is in the process of planning for redevelopment, and in any case the lawns were dug up during the archaeological inspections that were part of the planning process. So we are now located “down the hall”, as we say – that is, in St Martin’s Church Hall in Park Lane. Those of you who came last year will know that we have spent a huge amount of time and energy in clearing the ground, so that we can accommodate all the stalls that we used to have in the Rectory. Bramble patches four foot high, and piles of rubbish accumulated over the years, have been replaced by neatly cut lawned areas, front, side and back – thanks to the efforts of a small dedicated team of volunteers.

Last year we borrowed gazebos from St Catherine’s church, and from various volunteers, to make sure that, whatever the weather, the outside stalls would be protected. The photo attached shows us all having fun putting them up. The Rector, Canon Robert Donkin, who is shown helping to put the tents up, said... “This event is a key focus of our social calendar, involving the whole parish in a day of fun and fundraising. Please come and join us – we need help to run stalls, and also to bring us new ideas for activities, to keep the event up to date. There will be refreshments available, and lots of activities for children, so bring them along for a great day out! Deryn McAndrew, who has been studying the history of the hall said “At one time in the past, the Fete was held in the Castle grounds, and included sports races as well as stalls. If anyone has any information or photographs of this, or indeed of any past Fete days, please let me know - I would be delighted to have copies for our archives” Deryn McAndrew

Caerphilly events update

Well hello there event fanatics and welcome to our first ever events section in the My Local View Magazine! Hope you are all well and gearing up for a fun summer, packed with events for all the family to enjoy. We are all sweating it out in the events team, and that’s not from the hot weather!! We are really busy organising a host of events to keep the County Borough entertained over the next few months so fingers crossed the weather stays with us. The Big Cheese is with us again this year and as always it takes place on the last full weekend in July (23rd -25th). Stalls are booked up with a record number of applicants for the food hall in 13 years! We are looking to extend the food hall to try and accommodate more producers into the marquee - better get the measuring wheel out and see if we can squeeze in a few more metres! The website is currently being updated so keep an eye out on www.caerphilly.gov.uk/ bigcheese for updates on what is taking place in 2010. For more information on how the event is coming on look out for us in next months edition. If you are looking for a free event then don’t miss the Bargoed Carnival (12th June, 12pm - 7pm). We have been busy booking up entertainers including puppetry, music and dance and with the nice weather we hope to see a nice dry field up at the Heolddu Playing fields. Rain rain stay away!! All you Disney fans will be gutted if you missed yet another fantastic turn out at our open air cinema screening in Bargoed. The Princess and the Frog was a firm favourite with its audience who flooded into the car park to watch the fairytale movie. Don’t get too upset if you have not yet experienced our outdoor cinema, keep following our monthly events update and we will shortly be announcing our September show. Popcorn at the ready! And there’s more!!! This year’s annual Flower Festival is throwing us back into the 1940’s! But don’t worry there will be plenty of colour at this event with local churches bursting with floral displays! From Pansies and Primroses to plant potting and puppetry, families will love this old time themed event. Other activities include animals displays, face painting, farmers market, exhibitions & displays and a children’s tea party on the Sunday. Focus on Epilepsy Wales

Epilepsy Wales is a charity that was established in 1986 to help people with epilepsy in Wales, their families and carer’s. Epilepsy has been around since the beginning of time, in the past people were thought to have been possessed or were burnt at the stake for being witches; they were also placed in lunatic asylums.

Epilepsy is not a mental illness it is a physical condition. Epilepsy does not discriminate; it can affect anyone at any age from any walk of life.

Sadly, there are still many myths surrounding epilepsy today. Although the treatment of epilepsy has greatly improved there is still stigma and prejudice associated with epilepsy in today’s society. Epilepsy is an invisible disability which is very often misunderstood; it is the most serious neurological condition in the world. Epilepsy is deﬁned as having repeated seizures – not just one. 1 in 20 people will have a seizure in their lifetime – this is not epilepsy. A seizure is caused by a sudden burst of excess electrical activity in the brain, causing a temporary disruption in the normal messages passing between brain cells.

Neighbourhood Policing

Cop Cards! Caerphilly school children are collecting cop cards to encourage them to get to know their local bobby. Each member of the Caerphilly Neighbourhood Policing Team has their own ‘Know Your Bobby’ card showing their name and picture, together with a safety tip, the telephone number and e-mail address for the team. Pupils from Cwm Aber, Ysgol Ifor Bach, Nant-y-Parc and Hendre Junior School have been given a collectors board, and are busy collecting 13 cards from officers when they see them patrolling in the area. The scheme has been made possible thanks to funding that has been received by the Aber Valley and Trecenydd Communities First Partnerships via the Community Cohesion fund.

Sarah Edmunds, Headteacher of Ysgol Ifor Bach, said: “We are very pleased to be involved with the Know Your Bobby initiative. Our school has a very good relationship with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, and I am sure this scheme will go a long way to help our young people continue building positive relations with our local ‘Bobby’ in a fun and educational way.” Cllr Lyndon Binding, Chair of the Aber Valley Communities First Partnership, said: “We are delighted to support this excellent initiative, which helps encourage the positive interaction between residents and the local Neighbourhood Policing Team.”

Update from Kath Dawson, Tesco’s local community champion and the fundraising efforts of local store staff. “Firstly I spent the day in London on Tuesday 18th May attending the Muscular Dystrophy Awards for staff fundraising 2009/2010. The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign was our charity of the year last year, and as a company we aimed to raise £2 million. The actual total was in excess of £5 million. Our little superstore at Crossways was nominated for the BEST FUNDRAISING TEAM category, one of only three nominations on the whole UK. The great news is that we won!!! I was immensely proud to receive the award on behalf of the store, and a copy of the certificate is displayed in our foyer. The thorny issue of MPs’ expenses The new Parliament in Westminster is different in many ways. Obviously, we have a new Government which is a coalition of the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. We have an unprecedented number of new MPs, including more women and people from ethnic minorities. Crucially, too, there is a new expenses regime. The reputation of Parliament suffered enormously during the expenses scandal of the past year, and the expenses which MPs get is now in the hands of a completely independent body outside of Parliament. This is important because before the election it was Parliament itself which decided what and how allowances should be paid to MPs. The new system is therefore fundamentally different. Some MPs have expressed concern that the new expenses body (called the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority or IPSA) does not understand the nature of MPs’ work and is not providing appropriate support

and effective reimbursement of expenditure. There may be some truth in this, but the crucial thing is that IPSA is implementing the principle that expenses should be paid for expenditure incurred during the performance of an MP’s Parliamentary duties. It will take many years to restore trust in our parliamentary democracy. However, it should be recognised that an important start has been made. In my ten years experience as a Member of Parliament I have come across very few MPs who are in politics for the money. There are plenty of ways that most MPs could earn far more money than through politics. Established by the last Government, IPSA is trying to create a fair and honest system which most MPs, including myself, desperately want to see. I only hope that this is indeed what happens. The mighty Begonia The last couple of summers have not been very kind to anyone with a garden, to say the least…. Bedding plants, such as Busy Lizzies, have suffered in all the damp weather. Flowers have been washed away, leaves have curled up with mildew, the roots have drowned … maybe I exaggerate? But there is one valiant exception – ‘the mighty Begonia’ – bless ‘im.

So if you have left it a bit late to plant some summer bedding plants, and you’re not sure if it is still worth planting some….come on, it’s not too late at all. Go in search of those bedding Begonias; mix up the leaf and flower colours, to get a kaleidoscope of colours.

Begonia Semreflorens – the small flowering begonia – has healthy glossy leaves, which provide a backcloth for the masses of pink, red or white flowers. The flowers carry on from now, right through until the first frosts of autumn – which can be as late as November, and that’s a good show in anyone’s book.

Treat them to some compost as you plant them, then just stand back and watch…and let us know how you get on… it would be great to see a photo of what you are achieving in your garden, maybe you have been growing some of your own veg. instead of flowers; either way let me know at the contact details below, and we can encourage each other.

They seem to perform equally well in drought or monsoon; in tubs, hanging baskets, window boxes or borders, and surprisingly the slugs don’t seem to eat them – sounds like it’s good news all round!

Spring Catkins By Marge Butcher Catkins are found on many different species of trees. They are not really noticeable during the winter due to their dull colour but come spring they come into their own. Hazel (Corylus avellana) is the most familiar and is seen along roadside hedges throughout the woodlands of Britain. In March and April the catkins start to droop and are a vibrant yellow. Each catkin has up to 100 tiny ﬂowers, full of pollen to fertilise the female ﬂower which looks like small sea anenomes with red upright tassels. These can be found in some of the swollen leaf buds which will give the hazel nuts in autumn. Alder (Alnus glutinosa) catkins appear like a purple haze against the backdrop of the autumn/winter sky. The male catkins of this tree hang down – a brownish yellow colour, 2-4” long. The female catkin remains purple and upright. These develop into little green cones which eventually turn brown and stay on the tree for months before

the tiny winged seeds drop to the ground. Silver birch (Betula pendula) catkins are seen on the leaﬂess tree throughout winter. In spring they turn green but as they develop these male catkins go yellow and hang down 1¼”. The female catkins are shorter and more upright and developing into a small cone like structure, the seeds having little wings on either side. There are many other trees that produce catkins - poplar, aspen, oak, hornbeam and willow, hence pussy-willow whose catkins start as ﬂuffy white balls but elongate to produce yellow catkins.

Investing with Guarantees With political uncertainty and an international debt crisis dominating the headlines, it is no surprise that markets have had much instability in recent weeks. Together with news of rising inflation and continuing low interest rates it has resulted in many cautious investors facing a dilemma. Do they leave their money in savings accounts where inflation erodes the ‘real value’, or do they expose their money to investment in markets where value can fluctuate significantly? A compromise may be investment in products that offer protection of the originally invested capital. These products typically require an investment term of 5 years or more, and offer features such as a guaranteed return of capital on predetermined dates, withdrawal of ‘natural’ income, or deferred tax liability on income drawdown. This suits many cautious investors as it offers them a chance of ‘real’ growth above the rate of inflation with the comfort of knowing their capital is protected.

Indications are that investment bonds with protection of capital are growing in popularity. There is also an advantage of an investment of this type that is often overlooked, being they are disregarded, in certain circumstances, by local authorities in assessing long term care costs. The Light...don’t you just love it? I enjoyed my first experience of Northern Ireland hospitality recently, as I spent a couple of days working over there – it’s a lovely place full of lovely people, much like Wales really! It was as I walked around the coastal town of Portrush at 10 pm that I realised that it was still light – ah I just love these summer evenings. Light: it is so easily taken for granted, especially in this age of instant light at the flick of a switch….but when Jesus announced “I am the light of the world” to his listeners 2000 years ago; it would have made a huge impact on them…it is meant to be hugely important to me and you too. Without light; our life would fall apart.

So, here’s the challenge (and it is directed primarily at me, and the church): How effectively am I at reflecting that fantastically attractive light? Actually Jesus also said to his followers that “you are the light of the world”, so it isn’t that we just reflect the light, we actually become the light …hhmmm

Update on Home Information Packs As from midnight on the 20th May 2010 it was announced that with immediate effect the Coalition Government have suspended the use of Home Information Packs (HIPs).
