It’s come around again...’X’ number of sleeps before Christmas! Hardly have the children settled back into school, than we are treated to the daunting sight of supermarket aisles brimming with giant tins of goodies, and shelves packed to the hilt with specially packaged sauces and culinary adornments. It’s amazing how a label showing a sprig of holly or some festive squiggles, can entice you to buy something you’d never dream of any other time of year!

But isn’t that what it’s all about? A time to push the boat out, let your hair down, break out the family traditions, forget the mundane day to day trials and tribulations - and just have fun? No, that isn’t what Christmas is all about, but it’s a good part of it. Having great family times, sharing some laughs and hopefully entering a new year relaxed and happy. And with a bit of time to spare before the countdown to the number of sleeps starts again! This magazine covers far more than Christmas - a great big 4 months worth of information either here or on the website (possibly even both!). It’s not full of do’s and dont’s and anecdotes, you won’t laugh out loud as you read through the pages, but you will find a wealth of valuable local information. Happy 4 months,

Did you know that there’s a golden age for learning to talk – before a child is 5 ½ years old? Singing songs together and learning rhymes and actions is a great way to help children develop vital communication skills. This is why I CAN, the children’s communication charity, has launched the annual Chatterbox Challenge sing-along based on songs, noises and even silence. With sponsorship from Openreach and TTS, and the support of Humf from the Nick Jr.TV show, I CAN are calling on parents and carers to encourage their child’s early years setting to get involved. Sounds like fun with Humf develops the communication skills of children under 5 through songs and rhymes in early years settings across the UK. Children are sponsored to perform in front of families and carers and the majority of events will be held in Chatterbox Challenge Week from 10-16th February 2014.

Local mums Pippin Hackett and Rachel Slater are celebrating after Bookham Toddler Group was named one of the best in the area in the UK’s biggest parenting competition. The group which runs at The Old Barn Hall in Bookham, every Tuesday during term time from 9.45am-11.30am, is open to children aged from 0-5years. It has been running for 30 years and is a firm favourite with local mums. Parents have commented that the group is special to them for its ‘friendly atmosphere, great range of activities for kids and for putting a smile on the face of everyone who attends.’ Pippin Hackett said: We are delighted to have won. It’s an award for everyone involved in Bookham Toddler Group. Ceramica celebrates 10 years trading! Hannah Young of Ceramica, has celebrated 10 years as a successful independent shop in The Parade, Claygate. To celebrate her milestone anniversary, Hannah held a rainbow themed party for friends, family, traders and customers past and present; over 176 adults, teens, children, toddlers and babies came out to celebrate, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Elmbridge. “I can honestly say, there is no place I’d rather be running my business from, “ said Hannah. It’s been a real privilege to see so many of the children of Claygate grow and develop over the years; in particular, it’s been great fun to see their artistic skills flourish”. Choccy Apples! These fun and easy to make chocolate apples are a wonderful sweet treat for this time of year! Perfect for Bonﬁre night parties and any special treat, they are a great twist on the more traditional toffee apple.

How to make: First wash and dry the apples, remove the stalks and turn them upside down onto a plate. Carefully pierce the apples with a skewer through the base in the very centre and push the skewer through the apple so that it is securely attached to it and there is enough sticking out to be used as a hand hold. Boil a kettle and carefully pour a small amount of water into a bowl or container. Place a slightly smaller bowl inside the one with the water in, being careful that no water overﬂows as you do so. Break up the chocolate into the smaller container and stir until it’s melted. Very carefully dip each apple into the chocolate until they are fully coated, and place each one onto a cupcake case. Once dipped leave your apples to sit for a minute or two (but not too long or the chocolate will set too much!). Once you are ready use any of your decorations to create some yummy looking and tasty apples! I made mine with a selection of smarties, dolly mix and strawberry laces and had excellent help from my good friend Annabel, who was very good at ﬁtting lots of sweets on to one single apple! Once decorated leave for a few hours so that the chocolate sets, and enjoy with family and friends! Bye for now!
