THANK YOU “As soon as you stop wanting something, you get it.” Andy Warhol Dear Monsters, As we enter our sixth publication, the drought of new Gaga material continues; however, we are all still going strong. ARTPOP is getting closer each and everyday, and as many give up waiting, those of us who are going to endure the sparse times will receive the greatest rewards with the new album. As the Warhol quote says above, as soon as we stop wanting, we get it. Gaga knows this. The drought is subject to Warhol’s other quote surrounding time : “The idea of waiting for something makes it more exciting.” I believe that Gaga is testing us. She said at the Born This Way ball, “some of you will betray me.” Gaga’s making sure that those who are dedicated to her get the best results from ARTPOP. Within our most recent publication we have added a new feature- cover posters. Yes that’s right, a free poster. Stick them on your walls, in the streets, get them signed, hold them up at concerts- they’re yours. We would like to thank all of the dedicated team who have worked on the content and design of this publication; from writing to proofreading, to distributing orders and setting up sales. ady Gaga has always stretched herself beyond just the music industry; she has become a fashion icon, successful business woman, humanitarian, and has been placed at #45 on Forbes list of the Top 100 Most Powerful Women along with making several other lists such as #5 in Most Powerful Celebrities. With all this under her belt it comes as no surprise that Gaga has decided to try her hand at another big industry within the world of entertainment and pop culture, acting.

MACHETE KILLS

Lady Gaga has already been in many television shows such as Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons, plus had her own holiday special; but this time shes going for much bigger by being part of the upcoming action movie Machete Kills. The movie itself is a sequel to the original Machete which was the story of ex-federale agent Machete Cortez who was out for revenge against his former employers after being caught in a setup that nearly cost him his life. The sequel picks up with Machete being recruited by The President of the United States to head to Mexico to stop an arms dealer and eccentric billionaire who has a crazy plan to launch weapons into space, spreading war and panic across the globe. According to some Hollywood gossip sites the ending of Machete Kills is also suppose to pave the way for a third Machete movie. The first news of Lady Gaga having a role in this movie actually came from the twitter account of the movie’s director Robert Rodriguez who posted a tweet commenting on how impressed he was with Gaga’s performance, Gaga herself later tweeted confirming that she would indeed be in the upcoming film. Rodriguez is known for directing movies such as Sin City, Spy Kids, and his work in Grindhouse which featured fake movie trailers one of which became the original Machete film. Rodriguez is also known for his unique style of filming and take on the directing of B-rated films. A B-movie is a motion picture that is produced on a lower budget and usually has less advertisement, B films have been known for their integrity and ingenuity having come to define film genres such as Western, Science-fiction, and Horror. As far as Lady Gaga’s role in the film very little information has been given, there was some speculation that her role would only be a brief cameo however director Rodriguez stated that Gaga would not have a small role,

the release of her own promotional poster for the movie proves this and gives the name of Gaga’s character as La Chameleón. In the poster Gaga is shown draped in a wolf pelt while holding a gun and smoking silencer; in the newly released trailer La Chameleón is shown only briefly, walking down a desert highway hailing a ride from a truck driver and later yielding a machine gun leading many to wonder if Gaga will be playing the role of a villainous seductress; according to the IMDb website La Chameleón is a past lover of the main character Machete Cortez and apparently there is some unfinished business. Along side the character La Chameleón is a character called El Chameleón played by Cuba Gooding Jr. however the relationship between these two characters is still unclear. Besides Gaga and Gooding, Machete Kills features a very star studded and even controversial cast with actors such as Charlie Sheen, Jesica Alba, Mel Gibson, Alex Vega, Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard and many others. There was some speculation if Lindsay Lohan would also be in the film, reprising her role from the first Machete as April Booth, however with the official release of the cast list this has been proven to not be true. Along with the rumors on Lohan’s part in the film there were also doubts on Lady Gaga’s capability as an actress. Little Monsters everywhere would attest that any one of Gaga’s music videos or live performances would be enough to prove Gaga’s acting skills however it was noted that Gaga did take a few acting classes prior to filming; fellow actress Alex Vega who will be playing a character named Kill Joy also commented on Lady Gaga’s work in a brief interview with Clevver News stating that while she was not on set with Gaga she did see some of the footage and praised Gaga on her acting. It has also been noted that Lady Gaga has set herself a goal with her acting debut, the Oscars. Machete Kills is set to be released in October 4th of this year and expected by some critics to do relatively well; the movie is also expected to have scenes of gore, violence, and sexual content placing it at a possible rated R (sorry younger Little Monsters) however no official rating has been given yet.



Next Stop on my Journey: Melbourne, Australia Part Two on The Road To Love I got into Melbourne the 26th June, 2012. I waited at her hotel, hoping to see her and get to greet Gaga during her arrival to a new city. I was very lucky to find out which hotel she was staying at and made it in time to get a good spot in the line. After a few hours, Gaga arrived looking amazing. She saw me, then came up and signed my Fame LP, which made my day, which was very crazy with all of the fans pushing through, but of course the craziness was worth it. I was very lucky to get to attend 5 shows in Melbourne, and the first one was June 27, 2012. The show changed a bit with a wardrobe change for Judas, and this is also where she first played “Princess Die”, which we all fell in love with. By then I was getting used to getting up early, going to bed late, and sleeping on the cold venues floors

many times. As many monsters know, this was essential in order to guarantee a spot in the famous Monster Pit. While deprived of sleep and food, I was living purely on my love of Gaga, which kept me from giving up even when I was tired. The Next Melbourne show on June 28th was amazing and another life changing moment. Okay, those who know me know I would never take my shirt off in public, as I’m a private, shy person. However, that night - in front of Gaga and 30 others fans I became a Bad Kid and took it off and said to her, “Let’s do something inappropriate,” and Gaga was like, “Okay, lets do it” and played with my nipples. It was the best fuckin’ moment and the photo taken from that moment became one of my favourite photos of me with any artist ever! That same night, Gaga wrote “Princess Die” on me, but I didn’t get it tattooed like I did when she wrote on my arm backstage after a previous show. On June 29th, Melbourne was truly amazing. We were at Gaga’s hotel and we saw Tara Savelo coming outside with hotel staff and heaps of pizza and gifts for all of the other monsters there for Gaga. This sent us into a meltdown, as you can imagine, but I have to say I was to happy to eat, and we also got an 8 x10 signed photo and note from Gaga saying, “Dear Little Monsters, sending you love and pizza. Stay warm and enjoy. Thank you for all your lovely songs and dedication. Love + ARTPOP. Lady Gaga. June 29 2013.” We were all like, “The silly thing got the date wrong. Haha!” The last 3 Melbourne shows (June 30th, 1 July 1st, and July 3rd 2012) were all amazing. At that point I had danced all over that Monster Pit - front and back - and no matter where I was in the pit, there was always a great view and sexy


get to see Gaga l live again. I was very lucky to get backstage to say goodbye and properly end my tour. When I saw Gaga for the last time in Perth, she said to me, “You are so cheeky. Are you coming to the States next year and are you bring your friends with you?”I said to her, “Yes, I am and I’m calling it the Aussie Invasion.” I miss her so much. monsters to dance with. So thank you, Melbourne, for the great times, but I had to move on to Perth for the last two Australian dates. I got into Perth the day before Gaga, so when my hotel gave me a free bottle of wine, I decided I’d be drinking my tears that night in my Gaga jumper, preparing for the real thing. The next day, July 5th, 2012, Gaga arrived in Perth with her boobs pushed up, looking sexy as always, and the same day I was lucky to be on Channel 7 news where they talked about my Gaga tour.

“Let’s do something inappropriate,” On the 7th of July, it was finally time for showtime in Perth. The night was so unusual, as the crowd desperately wanted to hear “Hair”, even though Gaga had not played it since her last show in Sydney when she decided to add “Princess Die” to the set list. The crowd was screaming “Hair”, begging her to sing the song for their ball. Gaga Gaga always tries to make her Little monsters happy, so the monsters from Perth were lucky enough to hear her sing both “Hair” and “Princess Die” that night. My 17th and last Born This Way Ball was in Perth on July 8th, 2012. After 16 Born This Way Balls, I wanted my last one to go out with a bang, and I’d say I was successful at making that happen. I was all dress up and ready to enjoy my last show for 2012. I remember dancing and singing my heart out as I didn’t know if or when I would

The New Zealand / Australian Born This Way Ball tour of June and July 2012 was a crazy time of doing things I had never done for any artist, such as sleeping on the cold wet streets, lacking of food and sleep, being half naked, and enjoying one show so many times over and over. But I guess that’s just a life of a Little Monster. Meeting and seeing Gaga a number of times has meant the world to me. Gaga helped me to believe in myself more and she taught me that I can do anything. It also showed that I had a lot of inner strength that would test me and prepare for the next part of my tour.

he’s back! June 6th, Gaga was seen in Los Cabos, México wearing a beautiful floral bikini, brown wig, and – most importantly - smiling again! After months without a single tweet or picture, this made us incredibly happy. We could see her later that day having a drink and relaxing. We also saw pics of her relaxing alone with a pony tail, showing off her killer body.

As a surprise, Gaga had Tara Savelo – her personal make-up artist) – do Bo’s make-up for the most wonderful day of her life. Bo looked absolutely gorgeous on her wedding day.

On Sunday, Gaga went on a horse ride and got a massage before heading back to NYC to be with her boyfriend, Taylor Kinney. Again, wearing nothing eccentric, she wore shorts and high heels in NYC, even though it was raining. The next day she went to the Hamptons without Taylor, looking fabulous in a black dress and blonde hair by the side of her bodyguard. From the new candids we discovered that Gaga has ditched her Blackberry and is now sporting a white iPhone 5.

We weren’t sure about what exactly she was doing there until we saw a photo of her with a familiar face: her friend Bo O’Connor. Bo was getting married, and guess who was one of the bridesmaids? Not everyone knew Bo before the wedding, but they have been friends since high school. The thing that makes me even more happy is that Gaga still has all of the friendships (the good ones) that she had before the fame, money, pop star lifestyle. Even now, she is still the same Stefani to those closest to her.

Even though Gaga wasn’t wearing anything eccentric or mind blowing, she looked very pretty with her long eyelashes, beautiful pink dress, and blonde hair pulled in one side with a flower. Everything on the wedding went perfectly and some people say Gaga almost cried.

“If you’re a strong female you don’t need permission.” There’s no doubt about it, Mother Monster is an iconic strong woman of the 21st century. But where does this strong root come from? The Germanotta girls. Gaga has been surrounded by strong women all her life, from icons that she looked up to as a child to present friends and relatives. Because of these influences, Gaga herself has become an iconic female star that others look up to. It all started with her mother, Cynthia. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia to parents Paul Douglas Bissett and Veronica Rose “Ronnie” (nee Ferrie) Bissett. Cynthia graduated from West Virginia University in 1976 before marrying Joe Germanotta. The couple later had their first child, a daughter named Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. (A name that is by now familiar to all Little Monsters.) Gaga has commented that her foundation of style and fashion is

predominantly from her mother. Lyrics have been shown to prove this: “She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on//In the glass of her boudoir.” Gaga has teamed up with her mother to set up the foundation known as The Born This Way Foundation. It’s aim: to empower youth and inspire bravery. The foundation was founded in 2011 and the opening event took place at Harvard University, where Gaga, Cynthia, trained specialists, and celebrity talk show host Oprah Winfrey (another strong woman) hosted a panel on the goals of the foundation. Together Cynthia and Gaga have helped monsters around the world, especially with the use of the Born Brave Bus on the US leg of the Born This Way Ball. The bus followed Gaga’s tour on both canceled and uncanceled dates, creating an accepting and fun atmosphere where monsters could have fun, while also giving young people to seek help if they needed it. Another strong woman in the Germanotta family is Gaga’s younger sister, Natali. Natali Veronica Germanotta was born on 10th March 1992. Natali, along with Gaga, attended The Convent of the


the Sacred Heart before going to study fashion design at Parsons The New School For Design in New York City. Fashion is a common passion for the Germanotta family, with Gaga and Natali both having a keen interest in the subject. Natali and Gaga attended CFDA Fashion Awards, in which Gaga thanked her sister dearly. Natali was featured in the October 2011 publication of Teen Vogue in which she commented on Gaga’s fashion choices. “She asked me, ‘Should I dress really conservative and look not like myself, or should I do it over-the-top and freak everybody out?’ And I was like, ‘The latter, definitely the latter.’ The face of Natali is very familiar to monsters, as she was featured in the music video for “Telephone”. Natali had a small role within the 9 minute masterpiece. We hope to see the success of Natali unfold in the future in regards to fashion.

“My whole family is fearless.” Joanne Germanotta was a sister, a poet, an artist, and an aunt. Joanne is the sister of Gaga’s father, Joe Germanotta. She was born on March 12, 1995 and later died at the age of 19 from the disease Lupus. Even though she died before Gaga was born, the star has commented on her connection with her aunt and even included her poem ‘For A Moment’ in the Album booklet for ‘The Fame’. The name “Joanne” lives on strongly in the form of a restaurant run by Joe himself as is an honour -able tribute to the artist

and sister that was Joanne Germanotta. It is easy to see the sources of inspiration for Gaga’s empowerment from just her family. There are other empowering females in Gaga’s life, including idols and friends. Mother Monster has now become a female icon for so many across the world and provides the inspiration for freedom and empowerment; this is evident through classic songs such as Scheisse.

rom his creations of the exploding bra to the meat dress, Nicola Formichetti has not only created a name for himself, but contributed greatly to Gaga’s reputation for intriguing and controversial fashion. Most people would say he’s Lady Gaga’s fashion stylist, but he’s more than that. According to Vice magazine, Nicola Formichetti explains his title. “I hate the term “stylist,’” he said. “I’ve always seen myself as an art director ;someone whose job it is to create moods, oversee an overall image. I love everything about fashion, so when I get labeled as a stylist, one tiny part of that world, it really pisses me off.” Formichetti was born in Japan to an Italian father and Japanese mother, so he grew up between both countries - mainly in Tokyo and Rome, which is where he says he gets his inspiration for his work. He started his fashion career at an early age, but did not know that was the path he was going to take. At the age of 20, he moved to London to study architecture and ended up working at a boutique. Formichetti had a passion for street wear and quickly became the head designer and buyer at the boutique for 2 years until he was offered a spread in the magazine Dazed & Confused. His career quickly escalated, and he soon became the creative director for V Magazine, AnOther Magazine, Arena Homme, Vogue Hommes Japan, and Uniqlo. Most Little Monsters only know Formichetti for his collaborations and work with their Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga. Formichetti met Gaga in 2009 and told www.tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com the experience. “I first met her at a photo shoot for V magazine. It was an instant love. I had always stayed away from celebrity and musicians before, but she was so different. Instantly we understood each other completely. We started working naturally; all the videos, shows, tours, etc.” Soon after they met, Formichetti began working under the title of Fashion Director for the Haus of Gaga, and then the creative masterpieces started to flow. One of his first styling/directing experiences was at the Much Music awards in Canada in 2009. He had Gaga wear a dress made of braided hair and she then took a turn and surprised the audience with her now iconic

exploding bra. Since then Formichetti has given fans and the whole world so much to look at and even ponder over. According to stylebible.ie, Formichetti works as part of the Haus of Gaga to help create masterpieces of fashion for Gaga’s tours, music videos, album covers, and even red carpet appearances - and we have definitely witnessed the incredible creations over the years. Formichetti has done the styling for many photo shoots where Gaga was featured on the front cover of many magazines. He styled V Magazine in 2009 and 2010, Rolling stone in July 2010, i-D, Vanity Fair September 2010, and Vogue Hommes Japan Vol. 5 - which was a very memorable one because it featured Jo Calderone, who caused a lot of controversy. He has been the fashion director and stylist for many more magazines that featured Gaga on the front cover and has also directed album artwork, along with other projects with Gaga. The beautiful fashion in the music videos for Alejandro, Yoü and I, Judas, and Marry the Night were also directed by the lovely Nicola Formichetti. From September 2010 to March 2013, he was Thierry Mugler’s creative director - and that’s not all he has done. On the side, he has been a consultant for Alexander McQueen, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Missoni, Adidas, Nike, Levis, and M.A.C. His most recent work started in April 2013 as Diesel’s first artistic director, but what Little Monsters are really waiting for is to see what Formichetti has in store for the ARTPOP era. BULLYING IS On September 18th 2011, Jamey Rodemeyer became a

name known among monsters all over the world. Unfortunately, this was for all the wrong reasons. Jamey was a beautiful 14-year-old boy who chose to end his life as a result of years of bullying regarding his sexuality. I don’t want to pretend that I knew Jamey at all. I didn’t. But from all that was said and written about Jamey after his passing, it’s evident that he was a caring and happy person who was loved by so many. Even at his young age, Jamey was an activist, standing up for his beliefs and speaking out against homophobia and bullying. He was a role model to others who felt bullied. He was brave. He was also openly bisexual which, sadly, was all some of his peers chose to see about him. Not only was he bullied at school for this, but the bullying also followed him home. Jamey used his social media accounts as a place of safety, where he was able to be himself, be free and speak up for what he believed. However, cyber bullying took this sanctuary away from Jamey. His now well known It Gets Better, I Promise video posted on Youtube tries to reassure others - with the help of Lady Gaga’s Born this Way lyrics - that no matter how bad it seems, there are always people who will love and support you and that, most importantly, you need to love yourself. Despite his strong and encouraging words, it is heartbreaking to hear the sadness in his voice. Regrettably, even the strongest of souls can only take so much. He sent out one final tweet before ending his life, a sentiment that will never be forgotten by those who read it: “@ladygaga: bye mother monster, thank you for all you have done, paws up forever”. Whenever there is news of a monster passing, there is always a sense of grief and loss throughout the monster community. Jamey’s death, however, seemed to strike a particular chord. He was so young, so hopeful and so brave. I think many monsters saw themselves in Jamey, whether it was because they were being bullied daily, or because they admired him for his fearless activism and

wished they could be a bit more like him. Monsters became fiercely dedicated to getting the news of Jamey’s passing to Gaga. I think it was because they wanted to make one of his dreams come true. Despite the awful circumstances, Lady Gaga would finally know who Jamey Rodemeyer was. On the 21st of September the news reached Gaga and she tweeted:

Undoubtedly, Gaga was devastated by the news of the circumstances surrounding Jamey’s death. The bullying that she experienced at school has clearly stayed a part of who she is, and the emotional mark that it has left on her infiltrates many of her musical and artistic efforts. As Gaga always says, she is brave for us because we are brave for her. I think Jamey is the perfect example of this. He found strength in her message and in her courage to be herself and, I’m sure if Gaga would have had the chance, she would have told Jamey that his story inspired her to be brave. She didn’t get to say those words to him, but she did get to dedicate a performance of Hair to him at the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas, September 24th 2011. It was as though the song was written for Jamey: “I just wanna


FOR LOSERS be free, I just wanna be me and I want lots of friends who invite me to their parties. I don’t wanna change and I don’t wanna be ashamed, I’m the spirit of my hair, it’s all the glory that I bear…” Watching the performance, I realised that the song, in a way, was written for Jamey, just like it is written for all the other monsters who feel unable to be themselves. I challenge anyone, monster or not, to watch that performance and not shed a tear. Gaga rarely, if ever, gives a performance that isn’t full of emotion and this occasion was no different. She literally sang her heart out.

When Gaga tweeted that bullying should become illegal and that it is a hate crime, it was a short and powerful message that was read by millions of monsters around the world. It was a message that she, in person, took to the White House to discuss with president Obama. This message became the driving force behind what was to become the Born the Way Foundation, a movement started by Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta. The goal of the foundation is “to foster a more accepting society where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated,” and it is “dedicated to creating a safe commu-

nity that helps connect young people with the skills and opportunities they need to build a kinder braver world.” It’s not only about raising the issues of bullying and acceptance, it’s about actually doing something about them. Alyssa Rodemeyer, Jamey’s sister, was present at the launch of the foundation and spoke briefly about how she has tried to set a positive example at her school by being kind, being brave, and accepting others for who they are. I can’t help but think, if the world had been a bit kinder and a bit braver for Jamey and the many others who have ended their lives as a result of bullying, would they have been at peace with who they were? We all know the lyrics “No matter gay, straight, or bi, lesbian or transgendered life, I’m on the right track, baby. I was born to survive”. Isn’t the point here really that we are all just humans? And as humans, something as simple as a kind word to another human could change their life for the better. I will leave you with my favourite quote, from Maya Angelou. I think it sums up the message of the BTWF well: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” So make someone feel good about themselves today, you may be saving a life.
