Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates
Top Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeon is Now a “Fellow”
Local Surgeon Becomes Only 2nd in Area Awarded Prestigious Accreditation
Dr. Roger Thayer, D.M.D., M.A., F.A.C.S. One of the area’s leading oral and facial surgeons is honored with a new accreditation. Dr. Roger Thayer, D.M.D., M.A., F.A.C.S. was recently awarded a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.) accreditation, making him only the second OralMaxillofacial Surgery Fellow in Volusia and Flagler Counties. His colleague, Dr. Curtis Schalit, F.A.C.S., of Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates, became the first to receive the distinction in 2019. This accreditation is bestowed upon top surgeons who are dedicated to improving the care of their patients and safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical practice environment. Before a surgeon can become a fellow, their education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence and ethical conduct have to pass a rigorous evaluation and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College. “I am honored to join this exclusive group of incredible, like-minded surgeons who continually strive to provide the utmost in patient care through the latest in technological advancements,” said Dr. Thayer. “I truly believe all people deserve to live life with dignity and I will keep working to better myself so I can provide the care they need in order to smile again.” Dr. Thayer has been part of the region’s top oral and facial surgical practice since 2011. He and his Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates’ colleagues are the only surgeons in the area using Yomi, Yomi, the first and only system for robotic-guided dental surgery in the United States. Dr. Thayer is also a Delegate and former President of the Volusia-Flagler County Dental Association – a professional membership organization devoted to improving the oral health of people in the area. He has been a member for the past 10 years. Dr. Thayer went on to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration at York College and a Master of Arts Degree in Biology at City College – both part of the City University of New York system. He then went to Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine to receive his doctorate in Dentistry. Dr. Thayer then served three years in the United States Navy doing a general practice residency at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda Maryland. He also served at the 2nd Dental Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina as a general dentist for the Marine Corps Air Wing at the New River Air Station. He proceeded to do his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at Nova Southeastern University/Broward General Medical Center, where he received his training and certificate as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Since being founded in 1913, F.A.C.S. members have significantly influenced surgery in America and have been established as an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 82,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.

The Goods on Grief
by Diane Michael What has your loved one’s death done to and for you? “Made me aware of the strength she gave me.”
“Had to learn how to fend for myself and be alone in this awful world but I’m strong and free.”
“Everyday is precious. Everyone has a battle inside we know nothing about.”
“Made me realize how much healing I have to do.”
“I feel lost.” “It has given me an inner strength I never knew exsisted. Don’t know how or why but I need to keep going and continue looking for the upside in life. This was how my parents mindset was, and after loosing them both and my only sibling I need to show them I got this.” This one came with a number of muscle emojis after it! These are only a few of nearly 100 responses that were written by readers on the Universe Nudge Instagram page recently. The page provides encouragement and real life experiences that deal with grief and gratitude. The question posed was to write the first thing they thought of after seeing the post with comment: Look what your death did to me/for me! More remarks on pain and forgiveness gave the tone of true balance from this page’s followers who range from 24-34 (32.3%) and with 84.4% being women. What has your loved one’s death done to and for you? How has it transformed you? Are you a healthy version of yourself after doing growth work? Or are you stuck in denial and not living your full potential? Are you hiding your saddness from loved ones? Death changes you. It alters the present and affects the future. It also sometimes makes the past forgettable. It’s a tricky part of life. Take some time to think about how death has shifted your world and share it with someone. You never know how your experience could lend support to someone struggling today!
