Despite the absence of snow, the Sunshine State is still a very merry place to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. Winter is an ideal time to visit Florida because the weather is simply glorious; while the northern and central parts of the state can get chilly (but never cold enough to snow), its southern half offers mild temperatures and bright, sunny days.
Go to Nights of Lights in St. Augustine
St. Augustine is the oldest city in the U.S., founded by Spanish colonists in 1565. It’s also one of the most festive. Stay in the historic district during Nights of Lights and enjoy strolling its colorful streets while three million lights bring it to life. The display runs from mid-November through the end of January each year.

Many big cities and small towns up and down the coasts of Florida put on holiday boat parades. This fun Christmastime activity includes hundreds of boats decked out in full holiday regalia parading along a waterway, usually in support of a good local cause.
See the Sandi Tree in West Palm Beach
Your town might put up a giant Christmas tree in the middle of Main Street every year, but only in West Palm Beach will you find a 35-foot, 700-ton tree made entirely of sand. The Sandi Tree is the star of the city’s Holiday in Paradise celebrations, which take over the waterfront each December.

Beating the Holiday Blues
The winter holidays can be a very special time. Families gather, people give thanks or exchange presents, special meals are prepared, the streets and trees are decorated in lights. It can feel like a magical time, a time of good cheer. But, for some of us, this time of year is not a happy occasion—and can even be fraught or depressing. Family tensions or overly high expectations can make us vulnerable to feeling more down than elated. If we’ve suffered the loss of a loved one, we may feel that person’s absence more keenly. Or we may just feel like we can’t afford to make the holidays bright for our families. If you find yourself feeling down around the holidays, there are other ways to shift a low mood to a bit happier one. Psychotherapists who treat people with mood disorders often recommend these tips to patients to help them lift their depression:
Add small, pleasant activities to your life.
Making time every day to do something that brings you a little joy—whether that’s grabbing coffee at the local café, talking to a friend, quilting, or watching a sunset—can help balance the difficulties of the holidays with more positive experiences.
Move your body—even if it’s just a little.
Exercise of any kind—walking, biking, weightlifting, dancing—is proven to be mood-boosting and is important for overall health, too.
Try meditating or practicing self-compassion.
Making yourself more aware of your feelings and thoughts and learning to accept them (rather than just pushing them away) can help some people manage their moods. And, in the midst of your suffering, it can be good to remember that others feel this way, too, and to offer yourself kindness.
Help others during the holiday.
Perhaps volunteering to deliver meals to the hungry, sing for people in a nursing home, or visit lonely neighbors. Helping other people is helpful to you. It helps lift your mood to feel like you’re doing something purposeful, something that makes others feel happy.
Connect with other people.
Sometimes, we just need to stop avoiding social interactions and start connecting with people—friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, even strangers. Try calling an old friend, asking a colleague to coffee, waving at your neighbor, or greeting your local grocer or mail carrier. These small interactions can make you happier.
Give thanks for small blessings.
Try starting a gratitude journal, where you write down a few small things you feel grateful for every day. Don’t try to be grateful for things you’re not happy about, though—you don’t have to paint a smiley face on difficult things. But look for the small, good things in your life—like a delicious cup of coffee, your pet’s soft fur, a beautiful winter sky, or your child’s goofy grin—and say thanks to yourself for those small blessings.
If you’re just feeling a bit blue this holiday season, take heart. There are ways to move the needle—you just need to figure out what works best for you. Your mood can shift with a little effort, making the holiday season brighter for you and those around you.

No trip would be complete without attending the Pope’s Christmas message and blessing outside of St. Peter’s Basilica. Keep in mind that many businesses and attractions are closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

For a Christmas vacation steeped in tradition, spend your holiday in Salzburg, Austria. Every December, locals don horned masks, pelts and bells as they chase spectators throughout the Old Town much like the folk creature Krampus is said to have done to scare naughty children. Plus, the city offers an annual Christmas market that sells ornaments, toys and specialty treats, such as mulled wine and marzipan. If you enjoy listening to Christmas carols, save time for a day trip to nearby Oberndorf, where the iconic Christmas song “Silent Night” was first performed.
Honolulu – Oahu
Although December marks the start of Oahu’s peak tourist season, its abundant Christmas activities, warm weather and terrific whale watching opportunities make it a great time to visit. Base yourself in Honolulu to enjoy easy access to Chinatown’s fun holiday window displays. And don’t miss the monthlong Honolulu City Lights event at Honolulu Hale, which features everything from a tree-lighting ceremony to a parade. Just be sure to book your hotel room months in advance to ensure availability.
North Pole
In December, it’s only fitting to visit a place where it feels like Christmas all year long. A one-of-a-kind Alaska destination, the North Pole is home to the Santa Claus House, where jolly visitors can find a 42-foot-tall statue of Santa, mail cards and letters with a North Pole postmark and visit the team of reindeer. The town prepares for the Christmas season with events like a tree-lighting ceremony, a candlelight ceremony and a holiday bazaar. Since the North Pole is located about 14 miles southeast of Fairbanks, you luckily won’t need a magic sleigh to get there. However, you will want to bundle up for sub-zero temperatures.
