Stop by The Hub on Canal, home to working local artists who represent a multitude of mediums including painting, ceramics, photography, glass, jewelry, fiber arts, and sculpture. The Hub on Canal provides gallery space, workshops and classes.

Art classes are available throughout the week, as well as art education events.

Try out Sketching in Watercolor with Evy Okerstrom, 4-class series on Thursdays, January 5, 12, 19 and 26, February, 2, 9, 16, 23. 12:30-3:30pm. Learn to observe and record in a sketchbook using basic watercolor and pen/ink methods.

Atlantic Center for the Arts

Atlantic Center for the Arts promotes arts education through its community arts program: Atlantic Center for the Arts at Harris House. This program provides arts education programs for children and cultural enrichment for adults.

Harris House currently offers a variety of Children’s Art Programs that range from an Afterschool Series, Saturday workshops, a Summer Series, a Children’s Theatrical Production, a Puppetry Production, Exhibitions, Outreaches, and Special Projects that take place at school sites.

The Artists’ Workshop is made up of a collection of local artists who offer their talents via classes, workshops, and youth programs.

Interested in Pastel Painting? Join artist, Barbara Ortiz, for Pastel Painting: Expressive Color and Harmony – January 21 & 22, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm - Artists will work from photos that Barbara provides. You will explore a variety of pastel surfaces and underpainting techniques. Barbara will emphasize mark making, value structure and color harmony. On day two you will choose from a couple of photos to create a finished painting, incorporating the techniques and becoming comfortable with the process. “I am hoping you leave the workshop excited to experiment on your own.”

Positive Thinking Can Change Your Life

When life gets hard and seems to continue throwing problems your way, it can be hard to stay positive. Practice gratitude

Think of people, moments, or things that bring you some kind of comfort or happiness and try to express your gratitude at least once a day. • Listen to a happy and positive song or playlist.

Since 1977, Atlantic Center for the Arts has fostered a spirit of innovation and collaboration among the world’s greatest writers, painters, sculptors, choreographers and composers during residencies held on our 68-acre campus. Integrating the natural environment and architecture and incorporating an interdisciplinary and mentorship approach to its residencies was core to Founder Doris Leeper’s vision as an artist and environmentalist. IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts at A Glance

A free public festival, IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts , is considered one of the top juried outdoor art shows in the Southeast and in 2020, was ranked #16 in Sunshine Artist’s “Best Fine Art Shows in the Nation.” In 2020, we presented 237 artists from 32 states and Canada, and drew over 50,000 arts enthusiasts. Presented by Atlantic Center for the Arts, IMAGES takes place in the beautiful outdoor setting of Riverside Park, with the Intracoastal Waterway providing a stunning backdrop, and along historic downtown Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach. The high quality, salable work combined with continuous live musical entertainment, creative children’s art projects, a student art exhibit, and pleasing cuisine provides a culturally rich experience that communicates Atlantic Center for the Arts’ stamp of artistic excellence.

IMAGES wouldn’t happen without the support and cooperation of the New Smyrna Beach City Commission, Police and Fire Departments, and Parks & Recreation Department, and we are grateful for their willingness to support the Festival in so many ways over the past 46 years. Among the young people involved with the Festival are members of the Boy Scout Troop 72, led by Jeremy and Rebecca Green and a dedicated corps of parents.

• IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts was founded 47 years ago, and is spread along Riverside Drive, partway up Canal Street, and throughout picturesque Riverside Park in New Smyrna Beach. It is open from 1 PM to 5 PM Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM Saturday, and 10 AM to 4 PM Sunday.

• First Aid is located at the corner of Downing Street and Riverside Drive.

• Parking is available on Canal Street (west of Live Oak), Sams Avenue, Magnolia Street, Andrews Street, and North Riverside Drive. HANDICAPPED PARKING is available in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot, at 115 Canal Street. IMAGES volunteers can also assist those in need of handicapped parking under the South Causeway overpass accessible at Lytle and Magnolia Streets.

• Portable restrooms with handicap accessibility and running water can be found in Riverside Park, and throughout the Festival route.

• The information tent, located at the intersection of Canal Street and Riverside Drive, is the place to go to buy festival items such as t-shirts and posters, inquire about a particular artist, or if you get separated from your group and need help finding them.

• Visit the Spirit Garden in Riverside Park and enjoy a drink while listening to the music and taking in the view. The Spirit Garden will be featuring New Smyrna Beach Brewing Company’s local favorites on tap, along with a selection of wines and canned cocktails to choose from.

• Children can participate in hands-on art projects presented by the ACA Volunteer League and area art teachers at the Creative Education Tent. The tent is located in Riverside Park, adjacent to the playground, and is open from 10 AM to 3 PM Saturday and 11 AM to 3 PM Sunday. The Student Art Exhibit, featuring the work of over 100 students in Southeast Volusia schools, is next to the Creative Education Tent.

• New Smyrna Beach, located on Florida’s east central coast south of Daytona Beach, is ranked one of the “100 Best Small Art Towns in America” in the book by John Villani. New Smyrna Beach is a great place to spend the weekend! Call the Visitor Center at 800-541-9621 for information about accommodations and restaurants.

• Stop by the food trucks, located in the Brannon Center parking lot, for lunch or a snack. With over 10 trucks, this new addition to IMAGES provides options the whole family will enjoy!

ABOUT THE FEATURED ARTIST Anne Schroeder

The Florida keys were Anne’s home for most of her life. She spent a great deal of time boating, snorkeling and diving the once stunning reefs. Exploring the Florida bay back country was another wonderful adventure! Shells, feathers & driftwood were her treasures. Anne started creating art at a very young age. Thanks to a wonderful local art guild that provided art students with awards of supplies, she was able to learn how to work with many different media. At 16, she received a scholarship to Ringling School of Arts and at 18 she won a scholarship to study in Italy, through Florida International University in conjunction with the University of Bologna, Italy. It was 2004 when the feathers became a prominent fixture in her work. Anne loved how the patterns you find on feathers duplicated the patterns and colors you find on the reef and its tropical fish. She created collages, jewelry and finally started painting on the feathers.

Anne does not dye the feathers and only rarely cut them to trim or shape. All the feathers are naturally shed and are responsibly and legally sourced from parrot rescues, private owners, and rare bird breeders.

Anne’s work has been featured on PBS television’s Art Loft series: Episodes #249 and #349 which can be viewed on YouTube. You can see her largest works, to date, installed at the Christian Louboutin boutique in the Miami Design District. Anne was commissioned to create a tryptic of feather collages, each 8 feet tall by 4 feet wide. In September 2017, Hurricane Irma flooded her Florida Keys apartment and that October she moved to her new home in Fort Myers, where she now resides full time.

The Trish Thompson Emerging Artist Program returns to IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts! A partnership with Daytona State College, the program encourages Emerging Artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals by guiding them through the application process and the logistics of a festival at no cost to them.

Daytona State College students experience the same juried application process as Festival Artists and three Emerging Artists will be selected by the judges. Each selected artist will receive a fully outfitted tent where they can sell their work at IMAGES, attend a workshop with a Festival Artist to learn industry tips and real-world applications of the outdoor festival world, showcase their talent to the 50,000+ attendees of the Festival, and vie for the $1,500 Emerging Artist Award! Plan to visit these talented students at their booths, learn more about their work, and support the next generation of artists!

Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) was founded in 1977 by artist, environmentalist, and visionary Doris Leeper. Since its inception, Atlantic Center has been a research and de velopment lab for artists and a leader in arts education pro grams for the community. The main campus is located on 68 pristine acres in New Smyrna Beach, adjacent to another 2,300 acres of preserved land named after its founder, and includes a studio complex that has won eight national architectural awards, housing for artists, and a gallery and administrative offices. In 2018, the State of Florida awarded ACA for its long-term commitment to diversity/accessible programming. We welcome artists of all abilities at our totally ADA-compliant facili ties. Arts on Douglas, established in 1996, was the vision of Doris “Doc” Leeper, founder of Atlantic Center for the Arts. She and fellow artist/benefactor, Ed Harris, transformed the former 1920s-era Ford car showroom into a unique commercial art gallery dedicated to promoting the work and careers of Florida artists.

Upon entering the gallery, guests will discover a carefully curated selection of contemporary works, arranged to compliment this historic space - with its original brick walls and open, beamed ceiling. Meandering through the main gallery, visitors will discover an impressive display of acrylic, oil and mixed media paintings tastefully displayed. Also, peppered throughout the space is an array of sculptures, ceramics and artistically designed jewelry. This ongoing group display highlights new work by the 40 artists represented by the gallery. This presentation is formally changed every four months, allowing visitors a new experience many times throughout the year. Along the south side is the alt_space Gallery, dedicated to showcasing contemporary genres including installation art, conceptual art, and experimental practices. Discover the Feature Gallery, displaying monthly solo and group exhibitions by gallery artists.

On the first Saturday of each month, the gallery welcomes the public to a free reception from 4-7 PM celebrating new exhibitions. These lively gatherings are complemented with cocktails and live jazz. In addition to opening 18 new exhibitions each year, the gallery’s professional staff offers clients a range of services including: art consultations, previews of artwork on location, commissions, delivery, installation and shipping. Student Art Exhibit/Creative Education Tent Provides Free Fun for the Family

IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts is an event that the entire family can enjoy. Stroll through the festival and explore the fine arts, enjoy live music and performances, stop by the Creative Education tent for free art projects geared specifically to kids, and take a look at the Student Art Exhibit.

Atlantic Center for the Arts partners with Volusia County teachers to showcase the artwork of young, emerging artists in the Student Art Exhibit, where the art of talented students from New Smyrna Beach High School, New Smyrna Beach Middle School, Coronado Beach Elementary School, Chisholm Elementary School, Sacred Heart Catholic School, Read-Pattillo Elementary School, Edgewater Public School, Indian River Elementary School, Mainland High School, Holly Hill Middle School, Samsula Academy, Burns Science & Technical Charter School, and Conklin Davis Center for Visually Impaired in Daytona Beach is on display.

Atlantic Center for the Arts also presents the popular Creative Education Tent with fun art activities for children and their parents. Kids can participate in hands-on, take-away projects and enjoy the popular face painting tent! These creative and inclusive projects have been developed for all children, including those who are blind or low-sighted, and include tactile elements. This year’s theme is endangered animals of Florida, Kids will create manatee and sea turtle puppets, 3-D Florida scrub jays, and block printing on paper. The Creative Education area and Student Art Exhibit are open 10 AM to 3 PM on Saturday, and 11 AM to 3 PM on Sunday. Stop by and enjoy the fun!

Top Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeon Receives National Distinction

Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates’ Doctor Honored as Fellow

One of the area’s leading oral and facial surgeons is honored with a new accreditation. Dr. Bradley Pinker, D.D.S., M.D., F.A.C.S. was recently awarded a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.) accreditation. This accreditation makes him one of only a few Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery Fellows in Volusia and Flagler Counties, and the latest at Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates. Dr. Pinker’s colleagues, Dr. Curtis Schalit, F.A.C.S. received the distinction in 2019, and Dr. Roger Thayer, D.M.D., M.A., F.A.C.S. became a fellow earlier this year.

The F.A.C.S is bestowed upon top surgeons dedicated to improving the care of their patients and safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical practice environment. Before a surgeon can become a fellow, their education, training, professional qualifications, surgical competence and ethical conduct must pass a rigorous evaluation and be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.

“I am honored to join my esteemed colleagues in receiving this accreditation,” said Dr. Pinker. “My fellow surgeons and I work diligently to provide the very best care for our patients. In receiving this honor, I am furthering my education and training to enhance my skills and implement the latest technologies and techniques.”

Dr. Pinker is the newest member of Florida Oral & Facial Surgical Associates – the region’s top oral and facial surgical practice –joining in 2018. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Pinker specializes in orthognathic surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, maxillofacial pathology, maxillofacial trauma, and robot-assisted dental implant surgery with the use of the Yomi® Robotic System. Dr. Pinker also obtained a Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed a general surgery internship.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization of surgeons dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Since being founded in 1913, F.A.C.S. members have significantly influenced surgery in America and have been established as important advocates for all surgical patients. The College has more than 82,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
