Welcome to The CRAIC
Welcome to the fifth edition of The Craic in Galway magazine. As a young lassie, I loved watching American wrestling on the box. All of that drama and grunting and growling, the infighting, backstabbing and intrigue –it was far more entertaining than finding out ‘who shot JR’ in Dallas. Week after week, we would tune in as Hulk Hogan ripped off his shirt for the umpteenth time, to face Blinky the Bulldog or Max the Slasher or some such – my recollection escapes me. Then there were the tag teams, who could just as easily turn on each other, as political party colleagues at election time. Throw a stunning girl into the fray, who seemed confused as to who she was in love with, and the fight was on. The cry would sound – ‘Let’s get rreaddy to rrrrumbble – and the chaos began. In fact, the catchphrase became so popular that it was trademarked by ring announcer, Michael Buffer, and he has made over $400m from deals and endorsements on those five words alone. A nice little earner. I hope he won’t come after me here. So it was to my surprise that a sign went up at Leisureland in Salthill for a one day only American wrestling extravaganza. The memories came flooding back. My wrestling hero went on to star in a reality show and the magic was lost. But there are others who are taking the mantle, and will flex and grimace to abandon, right on our doorsteps. It’s also heritage week and I can think of no better way to rediscover the city and county. Many events are free, or cost just a few euro, and you can uncover the history of this exciting city of the tribes. There are many quirky tales and horrors hidden in the nooks and crannys of the cobblestone streets, from the wonderful and strange to the downright weird. And it’s all waiting to be told by the talented local guides who will take you on a voyage through the ages. We are jam packed with events to keep you busy over the next two weeks. You may have been caught on camera as we capture the best of the city’s day and nightlife through the lens. Catch us on facebook, thecraicingalway, or online at www.galway.com. Happy Reading. Sure it’s all a bit of craic (ed note: can I trademark this phrase, make a fortune and head to the Bahamas? Anyone? I’ll wrestle you for it) Love Avril and Darius
