Students will now be provided with designated smoking areas outside the Union following a Student Council vote last week. The decision was made after an overwhelming majority voted to make the balconies surrounding Solus available to smokers. A further selected area next to the Taf has also been proposed. Vice President of the Students’ Union, Rowena Vassallo, put forward the motion when it transpired that creating designated smoking areas would incur no extra cost to the Students’ Union. It stated that the balconies outside the Union’s main licensed trading areas should be opened up in accordance with relevant legal requirements, and that these smoking areas would be treated on a trial basis. The motion was passed by 57 votes to four, with one abstention. The main smoking area, which will be opened in the next few weeks, will be situated on the balcony behind the Junction Bar in Solus. It will hold up to 150 people at any one time, and be supervised by Union safety stewards. The two chosen sections will be on trial for the next three months and come under review again at the next Annual General Meeting (AGM) in February. Since the national smoking ban was introduced to Wales on April 2, the Union and its licensed areas have been a non-smoking zone. This decision was made at last year’s AGM, when students voted against spending any money on supplying facilities for smokers.

It was thought at the time that providing outside smoking areas would cost in excess of £50,000. However, the Union’s balconies are currently being renovated to fit in with health and safety regulations, meaning that these areas can now be used to cater for smokers. Despite the Student Council almost unanimously agreeing to pass the motion, concerns were raised regarding the decision to allow people to light up outside the Taf. It was suggested by one student that there would be a possibility of students passively inhaling smoke when entering the bar and using the cash points outside. Vassallo acknowledged these apprehensions, but said: “It is important for students to know that these smoking areas will be open for a trial period only and the policy will be reviewed again by February after consultation with students. “We have had a period of time without smoking facilities and now we are going to be able to see the positives and negatives of providing them.” She added: “Our main priority is to ensure that all students are able to enjoy the Union and hopefully the new policy will allow this to happen. At the very least it will prevent people from having to smoke on the Union steps.” Oz Thakkar, a third-year Journalism, Film and Media student, spoke of the benefits the smoking areas will offer to both the Union and its students. He said: “I’m sure it will encourage more people to attend Union nights. Towards the end of last year I stopped going as much because of the smoking restrictions but now I’m back again on a weekly basis.”
