STUDENT RIDERS from across the UK travel to compete in the annual Mountain Bike BUCS – a one-off championship race for downhill, cross country and 4x. This year the event visited the somewhat unlikely venue of the UK

Bike Park in Dorset. Some feared it would not live up to the standards set by Wales and Scotland in previous years, but it was well-organised and competitive event. The course was extremely short at around one and a half minutes long, but held just enough awkward corners plastered with tree roots to entertain. One particularly harsh corner and a road gap jump into a rock garden

meant the crowd were treated to some massive spills and the riders introduced to a good deal of foliage. The downhill event saw 15 committed riders representing Cardiff University Mountain Bike Team (CUMT), however, the squad was lacking some of the big names crucial to its success in previous years, in which they have won three championship titles.

Thankfully, the young guns managed to get the job done. Downhill captain, Will Laws, rode extremely well to place eighth among the sponsored riders in a field of 300. Ricky Chester and George May also rode well, both securing top 25 places to help Cardiff to fifth among all competing Universities. Top spot in the end was taken by Liverpool University, but nevertheless it was an

all round success for CUMT with all riders finishing within the top 60. Saturday night was host to some wickedly fast 4x racing under floodlights, before the cross-country event of the Sunday. With 6 laps of a tumultuous course to negotiate, the challenge was never going to be easy but the Cardiff team put on another great performance to finish respectably in the middle of the field.
