AN INTRODUCTION FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT This booklet contains the bright ideas of those characters who wish to stand up and represent you next year. These are the students who wish to argue your case with the people who have the power (such as the University elders) to make your time in Cardiff better. They will be the Directors, Trustees and Executive members of your Students’ Union. I encourage all of our students to take a little time to pay some attention to what the candidates are saying about your stay in Cardiff and how they think they can help. Candidates in our elections are always people who have dedicated an enormous amount of time to the clubs, societies and activities with which they’ve been involved and they work incredibly hard over the elections period. Having put myself and my potatoes through it all last year, I have the utmost respect for their efforts. Our elections are a fantastic tool for finding people with some of the key qualities required of a student representative: leadership, creativity, popularity and communication skills are just a few of these. But what is it that the candidates will use these skills to achieve? Their ideas and principles, as laid out in this booklet, are the causes that your Students’ Union will be fighting for next year and the facilities that next year’s Executive will hope to provide. I hope you enjoy reading about them and go out to vote on March 19th & 20th.

- ROCK OUT WITH YOUR CLOCK OUT! Vote who? Features editor for Quench & gair rhydd 2006-7 I’ve edited both Quench and gair rhydd and I know their history. I’ve spent nearly two years contributing to the best student media in the country, and although awards are important, my priority is to keep Quench grounded in entertaining the diverse interests of the student body.

WHO?
Hello. My name’s Si and I’m a second year philosophy student and Quench Magazine film editor. Since I first started at Cardiff in September 2005 I have been a regular contributor to many sections of Gair Rhydd and Quench. Being film editor is a role that involves keeping in constant contact with local cinemas and national promotion companies so that we can provide the most up to date reviews and most interesting interviews. Through doing this I’ve become very skilled at communicating with various media companies and have developed relationships that can really benefit student media. This year I have been responsible for providing Gair Rhydd and Quench with interviews with the likes of Dirty Sanchez, Borat (aka Sacha Baron
Cohen) and Cars and Toy Story director John Lasseter. Over my time writing for and editing Quench I’ve gained all the skills vital for the position of editor; a good grasp of the software and techniques we use and an understanding of how student media runs best. Most importantly I have always tried to be a key and effective member of the Gair Rhydd and Quench team and genuinely care about producing a paper and magazine of amazing quality.
WHY?
ing sure we are always chasing the best interviews, giving you the first reviews and the most relevant and accurate news. In this way we can make our award winning student media an absolutely vital part of student life. And I want to get more of you involved! I hope to make Gair Rhydd and Quench an accessible and exciting way for students to get writing and journalism experience.
As Quench Editor and Deputy editor of Gair Rhydd I want to produce publications that are truly interesting and exciting to read.
This means more opportunities for contributors to get involved and more support from our editorial team for students who want to develop and improve their writing skills.
This means encouraging and assisting each and every section to achieve its maximum potential, mak-
I want student media that is exciting, fun and vital, not just to read but to write for too.
