Elections 2009 Take us forward
The Candidates’ Manifestos Who will you vote for? 13th - 17th March 2009
Elections … Explained Your Students’ Union holds elections in order to allow you to choose your student representatives for the academic year. There are 6 full time sabbatical officers and 14 part time non sabbatical officers on the Union’s Executive Committee who act as directors and trustees of your Students’ Union, a body that is run by students, for students. They are your voice and act as your representatives in the Union, University and wider community, fighting for you on both a national and local level. The candidates’ manifestos contain the ideas and principles of the students that want to represent and listen to you this year, and argue the case to the people who have the power to make your time in Cardiff better. Please take time to read through carefully and explore how these students can help you and which of these you feel best to act as your voice. Ask yourself if they display key creative and communicative skills that you would like to see in someone who is representing you and your needs. If you don’t feel any of the candidates standing for each position have the qualities you feel are valuable, vote RON to re-open nominations and propose someone better. It could be that you feel you are the best person for this role. The ideas and principles of the elected candidates are what your Students’ Union will be fighting for this year. Make sure you get out to vote and really make a difference. Remember if you have time to moan about something, your have time to do something about it, so use your vote between 10am Friday 13th March and 10pm Tuesday 17th March.

Hi there! How’s it going? My name’s Tom Wright for those of you who don’t know me. I’m currently in my third year studying Medicine, but next year I want to take a year out and be your SU president. I’ve been really involved in the union over my three years in Cardiff, and I’m incredibly passionate about making the union a better place. I’m also currently Medsoc president and have been involved with many other societies and charities since starting Cardiff. I have been a part of Freshers’ Crew and have worked hard in the union over the past 2 years. Through my experiences, I’ve learned there’s loads of great stuff about our union but also things we can drastically improve. Given the opportunity I will fight to ensure the union becomes better and better and better…
REPRESENTATION, INCLUSION AND INTEGRATION I believe that sabbatical officers should be recognised by all Cardiff students. I will make myself known to you, the students and be an approachable and familiar face. I want you, the students to want to take pride in your university union. I want EVERY student to feel a part of the union, to feel represented and supported if ever they need it.
UNION NIGHTS I want to make Union events to be right at the top of students’ social experiences. I want to involve everyone; the union is there to be a part of!
YOUR UNION From the day you start at Cardiff until the day you finish, I want you to have had the best and most incredible experience. - This is your union. You CAN make a difference, we can make changes.
THIS UNION IS YOUR UNION. RUN BY STUDENTS FOR STUDENTS. YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH TOM WRIGHT! VOTE TOM ‘HOFF’ WRIGHT FOR SU PRESIDENT.
Tom Store for SU President Who am I? I am an outgoing, sociable and friendly 3rd year Accountancy student. I have loved my three years in Cardiff and want to create the same experience for you. I play IMG football and was a part of Welcome Crew, an experience which has helped me understand what students want from the union.
What’s ‘In Store’ for you? Communication & Participation Many students do not take full advantage of the services the union has to offer. I aim to promote these to ensure YOU get the most from YOUR union. Sport Working alongside the AU President, I will focus on resurrecting the IMG whilst continuing to build on the success of AU sport. Letting Agencies My aim is to improve relations between students and letting agencies, in order to ensure YOU get the best service and value for money. 24 Hour Working Spaces I intend to work alongside the university to introduce more 24 hour working spaces, particularly during exam periods. I will build on the success of the union, whilst incorporating new ideas to make YOUR union number 1!
So if you WANT MORE, Vote TOM STORE

I'll your come to great you hall I'm bringing representation to you by holding weekly surgeries in your department and at places like MedClub, Trevithick and Julian Hodge.
I'll fight to keep the Great Hall for your events like the Real Ale Festival or Go Global and tell the university to build more lecture space instead of taking our hall.
fair testing for you
Right now, you could have to sit 3 exams in 3 days. I’ll push the university to make exam scheduling fairer and to release exam timetables earlier in the year.
e e r g e d r u o y d n e e M e l r o f e t o 1 V # y a l u a c a m academic and university Affairs Life outside of Lectures I’ll get the university to schedule fewer lectures after 5pm and make sure they keep your Wednesday afternoons free for sports and societies.
Make your department listen I'll use your new e-voting system to hold elections for School Reps and give them the power and voice to represent you to your department, the Union and the University.
Get recognised I want to turn the responsibilities that students hold at university like running a society or organising an IMG team into qualifications to help you onto the job ladder. I'll look into the ways that the Student Development Unit and University can accredit the skills you have and use everyday.
Fair fees for all I’ll make sure that the university is offering fair fees to all students. Not just undergraduates, but postgraduate and international students too.

I am a SELF-SUPPORTING non-UK, EU STUDENT in my second year of a Politics & International Relations degree. I have been lucky enough to live in a few countries (Portugal, Germany, Canada, VE India and the UK) and I am VERY FAMILIAR with the challenges of moving somewhere new and starting all over again. My interests are varied but they include current affairs, a good book, cheese, cold sunny days and the occasional beer.
What I’ll do… Develop a comprehensive database of available FINANCIAL AID to OVERSEAS and EU students alike. Attempt to create very low cost storage space for holiday periods. Review and compile the rights of international students across all different areas of student life. Represent international students and bring to the table the issues that are relevant to them and their particular circumstances and organize campaigns relevant to those same issues. Liaise between the various societies which represent particular regions of the world and make an effort to bring them together on monthly meetings, as well as attend to their specific needs. Promote a Buddy system for ALL 1st year international who are interested.
Subhani Hello friends, Let me introduce myself first, I am Subhani, Pursuing MBA from Cardiff Business School. Being a part of the international community, communit I know how difficult it is for the international students to adjust to this new environment. Every person and every thing seems to be strange to us. Despite of all these fighting situations we are determined to emerge as successful graduates from the university. So, to improve the experiences of the students studying or coming to study at Cardiff University I would love to do the following things: Be an accessible individual to whom you can explain all your problems and share your valuable suggestions. Arrange student fares every month where you can bring in all your concerns Bring all your concerns to the university notice and see to it that they are solved Move towards introducing Scholarships for the merit students Promote cultural and sports activities which will make all the students engaged Ensure that full assistance is given to the students regarding visa issues Giving all kinds of Support to the newcomers to the university Move towards curtailing the increasing tuition fees for international students. Giving enough information to the freshers joining the university. Information regarding part time jobs, cost of living, accommodation facilities, pick up’s from airport etc. Last but not least, if I am elected as the International Students officer I would ensure that all students have a trouble free graduate journey, and I will promise that you will enjoy your presence in the university.
