This project has a diverse twist to that of a more traditional historic architecture that is often seen across golf clubhouses in the UK. The brief for this project was to produce a design which was complimentary to its surrounding whilst affecting a design that would both complement the modern game that golf has become, but give the visitor an understanding of the heritage that the club itself holds.

COWDRAY GOLF CLUB This project has a diverse twist to that of a more traditional historic architecture that is often seen across golf clubhouses in the UK. The brief for this project was to produce a design which was complimentary to its surrounding whilst affecting a design that would both complement the modern game that golf has become, but give the visitor an understanding of the heritage that the club itself holds. The design was based around a mixture of modern and traditional building techniques, integrating natural stone wall construction, which was common in the area over 100 years before. Along with a modern concrete and steel construction to the expansive height to the central elevated walls governing the plan.

“Without question, the best inland site I have ever seen for a golf course… this plot bears the same amazing topography as James Braid’s King’s Course. The massive, tumbling, rolling landscape covered by solid heathland makes this an exquisite anomaly in nature. The heather that we worked so diligently to introduce at Queenwood exists here naturally and in abundance.” David McLay Kidd, Golf Course Designer

The building is designed to cater for 300 private members together with hotel guests and includes all necessary change and golf related facilities. The upper floors contain fine dine restaurants with terraces that exploit views to the course and surrounding countryside. 17 / 50

The Clubhouse takes advantage of the natural terrain and forms a folly within the landscaped course. Taking its inspiration from palladian architecture of the past the buildings strong symmetry and crisp detailing is a contemporary homage to this form. Set on terraced embankments with bridge terrace links to the 1st, 18th and practice range areas the building forms a landmark for the course.

Brian Johnson when at a previous practice.

Emirates Golf Club, host of the European Tour sanctioned Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, was the first all grass championship golf course in the Middle East when it opened in 1988. Taking pride in its 36 holes of world-class golf, the club sports two of the city’s finest must-play courses, the Majlis and the Faldo Course, which is also the only 18 hole course in the region to offer night golf. Both courses combine the natural rolling desert terrain for a serious golfing test, while the signature clubhouse, remains the most eyecatching in the region. The Majlis Course has been presented with numerous accolades over its 25 year history, the most recent of which were its 2012 ranking by Golf World magazine as one of the ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in the World’ and its award for ‘Best Course Middle East’ in the Asian Golf Monthly Awards 2010 . 42 / 50

From the testing 18 hole Majlis and Faldo courses, to the equally challenging par 3, the Emirates Golf Club draws accomplished and casual golfers looking to improve their game. ‘The Emirates’ is so much more than a golf club, serving as the premier address for all things leisure. Its appeal is equally wideranging off course, with everything from fine dining to bar bites available alongside topnotch pool and gym facilities, tennis courts and a brand new spa.
