Welcome Galen Catholic College acknowledges the Traditional Owners of country the Yorta Yorta Nations including all 8 clan groups and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. Amid another year of uncertainty, the fact that Visual Arts and Technology are important and a vital part of education at Galen has never been more apparent. Both Junior and Senior School students have commented that their Arts subjects have been their outlet during the past two years. In particular, the actual process of creating visual pieces has provided our students with an opportunity for quiet reflection, a distraction from rolling news coverage, and a chance to grow spiritually and emotionally. Students studying Visual Arts and Technology subjects are to be commended once again on their ability to adapt to constant change, between periods of learning on-site and remotely. Your teachers are all very proud of how well you have performed and we’re also pleased that the delivery of our subjects has allowed you an opportunity to learn in unique ways, and highlight your view of the world through your artworks, designs and constructions. There is often comment that schools need to prepare students for jobs of the future, even though we mightn’t know what these professions may be yet. This calls upon alternate modes of learning, which the Visual Arts and Technology Learning Areas provide. To our students, your ability to communicate in arguably one of the most inclusive and immediate mediums – through visuals, will be a valuable skill in your toolkit as you continue to grow and adapt to professions and opportunities in the future. Likewise, with the growth of STEM career pathways, technology and design studies naturally lend themselves to innovative, future-forward, creative thinking and problem solving ability. During the middle of Term 3, Arts staff were considering how we might be able to showcase the work of Unit 3 & 4 students in the absence of a physical exhibition. We hope that the exhibition booklet that you’re reading right now provides something physical and tangible that you can hold with pride. As your teachers, we feel that you should cherish it because it’s a token of your unwavering resilience, that every one of you have displayed during the last two years. At times things were difficult, but you proved to yourselves, your teachers and each other that you are determined, talented, skilled, unique individuals and we all look forward to seeing each of you continue to flourish.

Olivia D'Agostino My film, ‘After the Rain’ is about a girl and a boy who fall in love but their relationship is destroyed due to a cursed ring. My intention was to create a short film that breaks the rules of genre, by combining the best elements of romance and split it half way making it into a horror.

Media Studies

Zac Essex My film, ‘Welcome to the West’ is a film about a child with a vivid imagination which takes place in his mind, as he reenacts the actions of his toys in a combination of a western/real modern world environment. My film sought to subvert a combination of a western, comedy, adventure and kids film genres.

Ella McInnes My film ‘Take Your Time’ is a western/thriller following the journey of a daughter seeking revenge on an outlaw who murdered her father. However, a magical pocket watch disrupts her along the way.

Georgina Stallard My film, “Bella” is a surrealist short that surrounds the ideas of image and beauty. It follows the protagonist ‘Bella’ as she is narrated by a voice that represents society and negative views in relation to vanity and image like “That woman’s not wearing nearly enough makeup” and juxtaposed with “She’s a walking paint shop!”. It is intended to challenge audiences' views and strive for a better and more accepting outlook on perception of beauty.

Aaron Cox-Willis Modern Bedside Table

My end-user was wanting a bedside table to store small clutter items, like chargers, jewellery or any other small items that would otherwise be sitting around the room. The bedside table needed to add to the modern simplistic look of the room and house and brighten the space in the room by being noticeable and eyecatching in design.

Harrison Guthrie Display Shelf

My end-user has a space in the office/spare room in their house and they were seeking a piece of furniture that can be used to both fill the space and display personal items such as photos and other valued items. By filling the space in the room, it will bring the aesthetic together and complete the room.

Allira Brookes My three untitled digital photo prints revolve around myself as the subject matter surrounded by colourful flowers and foliage. My watercolour artwork titled ‘Self Portrait’ also utilises myself for the subject matter, with a colour ink wash in the background. Throughout all four of my pieces the element of colour is prevalent, the bright tones create contrast and a sense of unity between the works. I was inspired by everyday objects and things. I wanted to make the everyday look beautiful. I chose flowers, leaves and butterflies because I enjoy nature. My goals as an artist is to create art that I like, explore different mediums and convey parts of my personality and have fun.

Gemma Casagranda I explored the configuration of natural forms. The piece was created by taking photos of natural specimens under a stereomicroscope and presenting it in a projected movie. For me this meant that I was able to explore my passion for nature and correlate all the unique forms I’ve discovered with natural materials under the microscope. I hope this will be a way for individuals to be able to experience what I saw under the microscope while investigating natural objects. I explore the ideas of scale in nature. The work was made by capturing images of a butterfly wing under the microscope and enlarging it by making separate panel drawings of the image and transforming the image from micro to macro. This piece to me means exploring the hidden and unnoticed micro world of nature and enlarging it in hopes that I can show others the micro details within nature that many don’t see or disregard.

Harsh Chaudhary My artworks titled ‘Cricket as Still Life’ and ‘Cricket in Motion’ consist of cricket gear and a cricket player as the subject matter. My first artwork aims to capture cricket equipment as a still life in the aesthetic of a classical still life painting from the renaissance. My second artwork aims to capture a cricket player in motion. I used movement through multiple stacked images to capture the movement of a bowler. I used colour by creating black and white images and scale by printing the photos on an A1 size paper to express my theme of cricket. I used a Canon 800D to photograph my subject matter and positioned studio lights in a way that would put emphasis on the chiaroscuro elements in the composition.

Olivia D'Agostino The subject matter wears a black suit to express that power all women hold and suits shouldn’t be restricted to just men. The titles for these artworks were “This is me” and “Do You Know Who You Are?” and “I Know Who I Am.” I chose the second title as a reference to Harry Styles as he was the source of inspiration for this theme. It’s a question to ask the viewer questions themselves and it may be blurry which works well with the artwork. The artwork is blurry and unclear which is how some people feel about their sexual identity. The third title is a response to the second, the person knows their feminie side and their masculine side but feels more power over the other.

Isabelle Devers The starting point was the subconscious and exploring the ideology of how subconscious forms and what it forms. The potential direction I used was dreams and how it could present it in an art form. The projection artwork I've done is computer generated coloured auras to relate to the subconscious it reflects the deeper levels of one's mind. I have made nine different colour field artworks and animated them to shift and change. Colour was a major element that played a role in my artworks as that was how I communicated the dreams

Annabel Martinac My theme was relationships and connection between nature and humans, for this artwork I focused on connection between nature and human through biological structure. I wanted to express that humans have a closer relationship to nature that we always forget because we like all living organisms in natural worked are made up of cells. Nature and humans are connected at our fundamental structure. In these artworks the main art elements are shape and colour. The shapes create the cellular structure and pattern with in the artwork. Colours are used to contrast against the black and white. The artwork where I cut out the cell shapes and layered a black and white background shows the fundamentals and structure of out nature are missing with out cells and the artwork where I layered the coloured cells onto the black and while face express life and connection made form cells.

Regan O'Brien To create my first artwork which I titles ‘Normalla’, I placed a zip lock bag on my hand, dipped it into a container of black acrylic paint and smeared it across two canvases. The smearing of the paint relates back to the big idea of ‘Agitation’ by creating lines that weren’t perfect. To add colour to the artwork I created two lines which were different colours across the two pieces however lined up when put aside together. To finish the artwork and once again, relate to the theme, I made a frame for the canvas with off cuts of cardboard. My second artwork was a portrait piece which was drawn on cardboard and black posca markers. The portrait doesn’t contain significant details however I don’t think that is necessary as the background was quite full of texture and uniqueness. To relate this artwork back to the theme and with the first artwork, the portrait was made on a large piece of cardboard that related back to the framing of ‘Normalla’.

Sarah Simonetti Initially inspired by conversations about what makes us human, my artworks concentrated on exploring the similarities and differences among people of all different walks of life. Through this, the photographs focused on the idea of one’s soul through depicting our own experiences and memories, all the while attempting to investigate both the physical and social/emotional elements of humanity. Eventually, this deeper connection with our existence allowed me to grow in empathy for those around me and explore who we are as human beings. In addition to the portraits, this year enabled me to create two paintings (‘Duality’ and ‘What Makes Us Human’) in which varied colour, line and texture worked to explore the different views and opinions of people I met, celebrating how different we all are, yet identifying the key features that connect us all.

Isabelle Walton I was inspired by fashion and the cycle of fashion trends. My final artwork was created using my potential direction of the trend cycle through photography and design. In my second artwork “the over lapping of patterns”I expressed the cycle of trends through photoshopping the opacity to show the overlapping of digital photos i took. I used a projector with patterns from different periods of time in the darkroom as a background. I then got the model to stand in front which created a textured pattern on her but also created shadows that i also photographed. I did this to show the cycle of making a new design by using older designs. In my first artwork, I showed how the cycle of trends repeats itself by taking photos of my friends throughout the year of 2021 on a minolta film camera, as film cameras which were popular during the 1990s are now seen as ‘trendy’.

The aim for my second outcome was to relate the interior to minimalistic and modern styled buildings. My goal was to create an open and inviting parlour that would attract the chosen audience and be spacious for the artists.
