Science Classroom without Walls

Champagnat 8/1 and MacKillop 8/4 spent the morning at Mullinmur Billabong on Tuesday, 24th and conditions couldn’t have been better. They documented the growth in their 5x5m eco plots. Here’s a little of what students had to say about their learning in this unit:

Bridgette Mason explained that for this Year 8 Integrated Studies 8 week unit they “have a triple lesson one week and a double the following. It gets us out of the classroom and into the environment. We get to see how the land works. It’s a good classroom to learn in. I think some people behave in a different way when we’re not in a classroom. There’s a bit more freedom to explore and be yourself.”

the growth and build up the understory. We already have one tree and few saplings of silver wattle. We’re thinking we’ll add another tree and a few native grasses.”

Liam Sessions: “I like coming down into this natural environment and enjoying looking at the native ducks. I enjoyed making a cheese toasty on the fire” Kiki Collins: “I learnt names of new plants. I learnt how to identify a plant by looking at the leaves, the flowers, and the trunk. It’s been good getting out the classroom and joining in with another class”.

Zac Carroll found “it was pretty easy to identify the trees with the book (local plant identification book). I just flipped through the I.D. book to the tree section and looked the foliage and identified a silver wattle.” Oliver Dixon-Leggett remarked “I guess it’s a bit of an intriguing school learning activity. You get to learn about plants. You might see a single gum tree, but there are hundreds of that species of eucalypts. I didn’t realise that there’d be hundreds of species of the one type of tree.” Isabel Ahrens explained, “We’ve been learning about how we can help the environment and the environmental problems that exist in the community. We selected an area to have our own plot to observe

Dear Parents, Carers & Guardians I thank our community for your understanding and support over the first two weeks of this term which has seen us once again impacted by COVID-19. Our staff has managed to work together, take on many extra duties and make sure that all students continue to have classes. This has been outstanding and I thank all our staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and respond accordingly.

Building Program Over the holidays the old toilet block next to the stadium was removed, leaving a very large gap between the Resource Centre and the stadium. Work will continue on levelling this site in preparation for work on the stadium. This week should see the start of the concrete slab for the Performing Arts Centre. In speaking to our builders, they have mentioned they are struggling to find local labourers to work onsite. If you are aware of anyone looking for work over the next 12 months, please contact myself directly.

National School Improvement Tool Over the first two terms I have been conducting professional learning for the Leadership Team, our middle leaders and the Advisory Board on the tool. In early 2023, this tool, which has 9 targeted domains will be utilised to review our community. As the year progresses, we will continue to explore the tool, and the community will have the opportunity to give input. If you would like to know more about the tool, simply place “National Schools Improvement Tool” into a search engine.

TIK TOK – Galen Catholic College logo Over the past week, we have dealt with a number of situations where students have joined social media accounts using the Galen logo as the group. I ask all families to please have a conversation with your children regarding this. Over the coming weeks, Mr Pat Arcuri and myself will continue to meet with students who are choosing to inappropriately use social media.

College Captains, Vice Captains and House Leaders 2023 Last week saw us commence interviews for these important positions. These interviews will continue for another two weeks. I thank the Year 11 students for coming forward and wanting to lead our community in 2023. These interviews are a joy and I look forward to the next two weeks. I look forward to sharing more Galen news with you in each edition of Reflections. Happy Days Darta

Success for Galen Students in the International SpaceCraft Exploration Challenge! Galen Students Gō Ashby, Ethan Perry-Heyden were part of a 6 day International SpaceCRAFT Exploration Challenge over the holidays and achieved 3rd place against teams from across the world. Joining their team was Remy Staley from Wangaratta West Primary. The three of them worked through daily challenges created by NASA Astronaut Greg Chamitoff, and his team of space experts at the Texas University. The International SpaceCRAFT Exploration Challenge gave them an incredible opportunity to participate in a virtual space exploration mission. As part of the 6 day mission the team: designed a new planet (Day 1), designed a spacecraft (Day 2), navigated to another

Day 1 - Planet Design (no scores given for this mission) Day 2 - Spacecraft Builder - 98.76 points Day 3 - Orbital Designer - 98 points Day 4 - Orbital Decent - 96.55 points Day 5 - Habita Builder - 100 points Day 6 - Surface Operations - 99.9 points Their final result coming 3rd overall in the High school division. And they came second for their team Video Submission. Huge congratulations to Gō, Ethan and Remy, and special thanks to Brett Webber and Maree Timms who supported the team during the 6 days over the holiday break.

planet (Day 3), landed their vehicle (Day 4), built a planetary habitat (Day 5), and explored a new planet to find resources to sustain human life (Day 6). The students learnt from experts through daily webinars and tutorials, with some very special guests NASA astronauts, Greg Chamitoff, Terry Virts, Greg Jonhson, NASA JPL Jet Propulsion Engineer Todd Barber, NASA JPL Robotics Technologist Ben Morrell and Mars City Design Architect Vera Mulyani, These fabulous and inspirational guests speakers are directly involved in each of the missions. Lessons on topics ranged from planetary science to spacecraft systems, orbital mechanics to robotic exploration. Even though the topics were quite complex the presenters were able to bring aspects of space exploration to an understandable level for the students. Then by learning by doing and creating with these concepts themselves in the virtual SpaceCraft Software, it created an amazing learning experience for them. The International Space Teams Challenge saw 67 teams from across the globe competing. Each daily mission was worth 100 points, with teams vying for top scores. The Galen team - Lightbreakers GCC22, were aiming for a high score each day, by joining in on the daily webinars and watching the tutorials they found success in the daily missions.

I enjoyed the making and designing in the program, especially in designing the spacecraft. There is a lot of trial and error, and we apply what we learn in the tutorials and webinars to maximise our score and try and get 100%. So far we are averaging 97% so we are close. Remy Staley: Grade 4, Wangaratta West The Space teams, SpaceCRAFT Challenge is amazing, I can show my creativity and knowledge and put it to use. It's awesome, each day we get a new difficult fun challenge and get to watch real people that have knowledge or have worked in space or on the program. Ethan Perry-Heyden: Year 9, Galen Catholic College I loved talking to the astronauts. I want to work in mission control one day, and Astronaut Greg Chamitoff answered my questions about working on mission control as he did this role before becoming an astronaut. The orbital designer challenge was my favourite challenge so far. I also like that we can work as a team, and get to chat to each other and work together, it’s not all depending on you. It’s a really fun and creative program. Gō Ashby: Year 7, Galen Catholic College

NCCD Information Sheet for Parents, Carers and Guardians

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) On School Students with Disability What is the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data? Schools must now complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) every year. It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments or “help” at school because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of students with disability.

Who is counted in the data collection? To count a student in the NCCD, schools must think through some key questions: 1. Is the student getting help at school so that they can take part in education on the same basis as other students? 2. Is the help given because of a disability? The word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and it can include many students. 3. Has the school talked to you or your child about the help that they provide? 4. Has the school kept records about the help they provide, the student needs and the reasons that the student needs this help? The school will need to keep copies of tests, student work, assessments, records of meetings, medical reports or other paperwork and information about how the student’s learning is moving along over time. Once the school decides that the student should be counted in the NCCD, they then choose a disability group and one of four levels of help that has been given to the student.

What does the word ‘disability’ mean in the NCCD? In the NCCD the word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). There are four types of disability that the school can choose from: sensory, cognitive, social-emotional and physical. Many students that need help at school can be counted in the NCCD. For example, students with learning problems, e.g. specific learning disability or reading difficulty (sometimes called dyslexia), health problems (e.g. epilepsy or diabetes), physical disability (e.g. cerebral palsy), vision/hearing loss and social-emotional problems (e.g. selective mutism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety). Letters from doctors or specialists can be very helpful for schools as they plan how to support students with their learning. Schools do not need to have these letters before they can count a

CECV NCCD Information Sheet for Parents, Carers and Guardians Page | 1

student in NCCD. Teachers can use all that they know about the student’s learning and the records that they have collected over time to decide if a student can be counted in the NCCD.

What sort of help does the school give students? Students need different types of help at school. Some students need a little help sometimes while other students need a lot of help nearly all the time. The type of help given depends on the needs of the student. The help can include changes to the school buildings or grounds (e.g. ramps or things like special desks or chairs), extra teacher help in classes, special learning programs, changes to the work they give the student or extra adult help.

How will the NCCD be different this year? All schools have been counting students in the NCCD since 2015. The government will use the NCCD data as part of the funding to schools.

What will the school need to know about my child for the NCCD? Schools work together with families to understand the needs of each child. It is helpful if families give their child’s teacher a copy of any letters or reports they have. The letters or reports will help the school understand the child and the help that they might need. Letters from doctors, psychologists, speech pathologists, doctor, and occupational therapists etc. can be very helpful for schools. These reports along with information that the teacher has (i.e. school based tests, your child’s work and learning plans) helps the school to understand and meet your child’s needs.

What happens to the NCCD data? Who will have the NCCD information? Each school principal must check the NCCD data in August of each year. The school will give the information to the Catholic Education Office. The school will work with the Catholic Education Office to make sure that the NCCD data is OK before they give the data to the government. The government will not be given the names of any students or any letters or records. Please ask your school for their privacy policy if you need to know more.

Does the school need me to agree with them about counting my child in the NCCD? Amendments were made to the Australian Education Act 2013 and Australian Education Regulation 2013). Schools do not need you to agree to let them count a child in the NCCD. You cannot ask the school not to count your child.

Where can I find out more? Please contact your child’s school if you have further questions about the NCCD and/or refer to the national NCCD Portal.

ART ON SATURDAYS Art workshops for ages 15+ Term 3, 2022

FROM SUBJECT TO PAINTING Tutor: Frank Burgers Saturday 16 and 23 July 1–4PM

Across two workshops Frank will guide you through a series of exercises to show you how to edit and modify what you see in front of you to end up with an interesting composition. In the first session a number of concept drawings will be made for possible development into paintings in the second session. These workshops are suitable if you have some experience, want to refresh your skills or learn a new approach. About the Artist: Frank Burgers works in oils on linen, and gouache, pastel and charcoal on paper, most recently in a minimalist abstract style. His work is about structure, composition and colour, about discovering new ways to invigorate the painting process and finding meaning that extends beyond the mere personal.

SOFT PASTELS

USING COLOUR

Tutor: Jennifer Paull Saturday 30 July 1–4PM

Following the success of earlier workshops this year we are offering another workshop exploring soft pastel techniques. Participants will be guided through colour theory, mixing and application of pastels using various strokes to gain different effects. Participants can then apply these techniques using a limited palette on black paper to create simple dramatic images such as the lemons shown above. About the artist: Jennifer Paull is a multi-award winning artist living and working in north east Victoria. She creates artworks of many subjects, from portraiture and the human figure, to still life and landscapes.
