Founders’ Day

3 | Galen Catholic College - Reflections Newsletter

What a wonderful opportunity we all experience here on Wednesday, finally celebrating a Found ers’ Day after 3 years of restrictions. Importantly for our community we have experienced no community transmission of Covid-19 in over 3 weeks which allowed us to safely hold an outside assembly with our whole community. It takes an event like this to make us realise how much we have missed gathering as a community and I look forward to doing more of this throughout the year and into 2023. In my address to the community at the Founders’ Day assembly, I asked our students and staff to consider what their legacy will be for their time at Galen Catholic College. Inspired by the story of our two Founders, Bridget and Marcellin, I asked everyone to consider how they might use the stories of the two founders to inspire them. I also utilized an example of a young man by the name of Kai Seymon who at the age of 11 created a business called Kaiko Fidgets. Kai is now in his mid-teens and runs a successful online business selling a variety of clinical and educational prod ucts to support people with sensory needs. Kai’s inspiration came from supporting his own needs as he is Autistic and has Dyslexia. Kai is one example of a young person creatively using his gifts and talents to support others.

These two separate spaces will ensure that the significant demand we see at Galen Catholic College for our physical education, outdoor edu cation, drama and music programs will not only be met, but staff given the opportunity to engage with our students at a deeper level providing learning opportunities that are seldom seen in regional secondary schools. When I first saw the plans earlier this year, I did not immediately focus on what the buildings were primarily designed for. Whilst as a com munity we have significant opportunities for physical and outdoor education, sports, as well as drama and music classes from Year 7 to Year 12 including VCE and VET, what I first saw was an opportunity for the whole school community to come together as one. My experience of the past eight years in leading another school in our region, which had a facility for up to 1400 people to gather, highlighted the importance of creating a space we as a school community can gather to celebrate who we are, to come together in times of challenge and to engage in growing the community to be the best version of itself.'

Unit 2 Health & Human Development guest speaker

7 | Galen Catholic College - Reflections Newsletter

Recently our Year 11 Health & Human Development class was fortunate enough to have a lovely visit from Mrs Carlin & her beautiful son Harvey, who is 12 months old. Mrs Carlin was happy to explain what it was like to go through a pregnancy and the birth of Harvey. Mrs Carlin was very honest and open, providing us all a very meaningful & helpful insight into what this experience is like and assisting us with our area of study, more than any other resources could have been provided to us. We would all like to send a large thank you to Mrs Carlin for coming in to speak with our Health and Human class and for answering our questions. We all loved having the opportunity to meet young Harvey and learning so much! Stephanie Leerson and Aleisha Spooner on behalf of the Year 11 HHD Classes. Over the duration of Term 3 our 1st year Building & Construction students have been busy constructing a new office space and tea room for our Maintenance staff. So far students have made and erected wall frames and installed posi struts for a mezzanine floor for storage space. This project has allowed our students to gain valuable training in real life construction sequences. In the coming weeks students will learn how to hang plaster sheets, install door jambs and doors, cut and fit architraves and skirting boards as well and a bit of wall tiling. Keep an eye out for more progress in future Reflections Newsletters.

Have you been thinking about becoming a foster carer? Kids in your area need care!

Will you be prepared to support a child’s cultural and emotional needs?

www.vacca.org

Aboriginal Carers Needed Become a foster carer with VACCAMakethis the year you make a difference, express your interest by visiting www.vacca.org or by calling one of our offices.

Are you able to provide Aboriginal children and young people with a positive and nurturing family life experience that will support their needs?

At VACCA we are seeking carers who are open to a journey that is both challenging and rewarding; carers who believe that they can make a positive impact on a child’s life.

3. Has the school talked to you or your child about the help that they provide?

4. Has the school kept records about the help they provide, the student needs and the reasons that the student needs this help? The school will need to keep copies of tests, student work, assessments, records of meetings, medical reports or other paperwork and information about how the student’s learning is moving along over time

2. Is the help given because of a disability? The word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and it can include many students

To count a student in the NCCD, schools must think through some key questions:

What is the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data?

Schools must now complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) every year It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments or “help” at school because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of students with disability Who is counted in the data collection?

What does the word ‘disability’ mean in the NCCD?

In the NCCD the word ‘disability’ comes from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA). There are four types of disability that the school can choose from: sensory, cognitive, social emotional and physical. Many students that need help at school can be counted in the NCCD. For example, students with learning problems, e.g. specific learning disability or reading difficulty (sometimes called dyslexia), health problems (e.g. epilepsy or diabetes), physical disability (e.g. cerebral palsy), vision/hearing loss and social emotional problems (e.g. selective mutism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, anxiety)

NCCD Information Sheet for Parents, Carers and Guardians

1. Is the student getting help at school so that they can take part in education on the same basis as other students?

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) On School Students with Disability

Letters from doctors or specialists can be very helpful for schools as they plan how to support students with their learning. Schools do not need to have these letters before they can count a

Once the school decides that the student should be counted in the NCCD, they then choose a disability group and one of four levels of help that has been given to the student

CECV NCCD Information Sheet for Parents, Carers and Guardians Page | 2

All schools have been counting students in the NCCD since 2015. The government will use the NCCD data as part of the funding to schools

student in NCCD. Teachers can use all that they know about the student’s learning and the records that they have collected over time to decide if a student can be counted in the NCCD.

What will the school need to know about my child for the NCCD? Schools work together with families to understand the needs of each child. It is helpful if families give their child’s teacher a copy of any letters or reports they have. The letters or reports will help the school understand the child and the help that they might need. Letters from doctors, psychologists, speech pathologists, doctor, and occupational therapists etc. can be very helpful for schools. These reports along with information that the teacher has (i.e. school based tests, your child’s work and learning plans) helps the school to understand and meet your child’s needs.

Does the school need me to agree with them about counting my child in the NCCD? Amendments were made to the Australian Education Act 2013 and Australian Education Regulation 2013). Schools do not need you to agree to let them count a child in the NCCD. You cannot ask the school not to count your child. Where can I find out more? Please contact your child’s school if you have further questions about the NCCD and/or refer to the national NCCD Portal

Each school principal must check the NCCD data in August of each year The school will give the information to the Catholic Education Office. The school will work with the Catholic Education Office to make sure that the NCCD data is OK before they give the data to the government. The government will not be given the names of any students or any letters or records. Please ask your school for their privacy policy if you need to know more.

What sort of help does the school give students?

Students need different types of help at school. Some students need a little help sometimes while other students need a lot of help nearly all the time The type of help given depends on the needs of the student. The help can include changes to the school buildings or grounds (e.g. ramps or things like special desks or chairs), extra teacher help in classes, special learning programs, changes to the work they give the student or extra adult help.

How will the NCCD be different this year?

What happens to the NCCD data? Who will have the NCCD information?
