Bella wins 400m Galen Juniors to race at Stawell Gift feature in Frozen Congratulations to Bella Pasquali (Year 10) on following in her mums footsteps and getting the win in the SYPAQ Lorraine Donnan Womens 400m at the prestigious Stawell Gift over the Easter weekend on Monday 18th April. While Bella was a favourite for the event, she had her work cut out placed with a 20m handicap at the back of the field. After the gun fired Bella sat closely at the back of the pack until picking up the pace as she entered the bend, moving to the outside to round up and pass the other runners. Bella powered down the straight crossing the line with a graceful stride finishing in an impressive time of 55.28 seconds. Well done Bella on such a great run!
Galen’s Junior Production crew have been busy preparing for already sold out shows for this weeks performances of ‘Frozen Jr’ this Wednesday and Thursday night. Student Leadership
The student Leadership team have a had a very busy Term 1 with many events that they have been part of coordinating, participating in student forums, representing their peer group and further developing a culture of “Belonging” and “House spirit” to their house for each Galen College student. Our Term 2 and 3 focus is going to be developing further leadership skills, planning Founders day in Term 3 and working on projects that matter to our College. Students that are interested in being part of a student representative council or development workshops (separate to the House Captains roll) are invited to speak with Ren White or their House leaders about how they can be involved. More information to come via SIMON daily bulletin.

VCE VET Sport & Recreation Term 1 was a busy one for our VCE VET Sport & Recreation students. Our Unit 3 & 4 students have been exploring Work Health & Safety in a recreation context by looking at the potential risks associated with activities like Bike Riding, Rock Climbing, Surfing and trampolining at BOUNCE. We have visited the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatics Centre, URBNSURF and BOUNCE to assess the potential risks and how to minimize these to keep clients safe. We are about to launch into a three-week coaching rotation planning and conducting Minor Games, Fitness and Tabloid Sports sessions for our Unit 1 & 2 Sport & Recreation students. This will help to develop the communication and class management skills required to become a competent coach, instructor or teacher of physical activity. We look forward to sharing photos of this experience soon.

YACVic’s Reshape Our Future youth forums are happening across regional Victoria in June 2022. Reshape Our Future youth forums are free, fun and powerful events for young people to learn how to make a difference on the issues you care about and make new friends who care about the same things as you. Wangaratta – 14 June, Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre from 10am – 2pm Session Topics: • • •
We are the leaders of today and tomorrow Pathways to Power: how you can make a difference Local feature sessions which will differ on each location.
This event is planned by young people, for young people – we want a space to come together after two years of lockdowns, learn and take action to Reshape Our Future together. And it’s free for all young people, with food and refreshments provided too! Book online at: https://events.humanitix.com/ tours/reshape-our-future
Rural City of Wangaratta are looking for 2 representatives from each of the schools in the Wangaratta LGA to be part of the collaborative project! This working group, known as the ‘Next Gen’ will work with Council staff and a training organisation PurpleGlue to design and develop a Youth Action Plan for Council! The Next Gen will have 4 facilitated workshops around leadership skills, collaboration, and community consultation before they go out to the community with the youth survey they have designed. The students will go back to school and encourage other students to participate in the survey. We will also do some pop up sessions around town at the skate parks, parks, WSAC, library, etc as well. We want this Youth Action Plan to be co-designed and delivered by young people in our community as they’re the ones who will benefit from this moving forward. It will also give us a better insight as to what young people want and the actions Council need to take to support this. The Next Gen will meet after school hours, with the first PurpleGlue session being Tuesday May 3rd. Meeting dates will be confirmed once I have heard back from you with 2 representative from your school. Closing date for this is Friday the 29th April, however I will accept interest on the Monday and the forms can be returned on Tuesday when they attend the first session! This is a great project to get young people thinking about what affects them, where they live, what they want and need, and to make a positive change in the community. They benefit from the training, working with other young people and Council staff. The young people will also be paid by vouchers at intervals during the project so that they know that their time is valuable.
