National Sorry Day & Reconciliation Week Social Justice Team: Matilda Foster, Molly Canning, Emily Tidd, Zara Rippingale and Fergus McNamara
To launch National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week the Social Justice students posted notices in the bulletin and designed a banner at the entrance of Galen. National Sorry Day on May 26 gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Starting Thursday 27 May is Reconciliation Week. Australia’s theme for 2022 is “Be Brave. Make Change.” It is a challenge to all Australians to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so that we can make change and strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians. It’s an important, serious and difficult job. But it’s also one that should be inspiring and uplifting for all Australians and all generations as we look to make reconciliation all our business.

Building a learning partnership
Since arriving at Galen Catholic College I have had the amazing opportunity to see how our community approaches learning across Year 7 to 12. Each educator in our community uses their skills to support our students on their pathway to success. Unfortunately, for most school communities, the past two years have made it impossible to allow anyone, other than staff and students to see what happens inside our classrooms and our school yard, due the restrictions placed on our communities. As a new member of the Galen Catholic College, I have constantly moved around the school to see learning in action. Term one saw us start our three-step approach to opening up our community and providing real opportunities for our families and the wider north east community to see who we are, how we approach learning and how they can engage in learning to support students. Our Family Discovery Night in term one started the process of welcoming in current, new and prospective families, as well as members of the wider north east community. The evening was intentionally designed to allow all ages to see who we are and what opportunities we can present to students and families. As principal, one of the great joys in my role is hearing the stories that come from parents who are ex-students walking into the school for the first time since they left the college as young adults or as was the case on the evening, a number of people who live close to school who came for a look. Each conversation brings with it a window to the past that helps me understand more about the learning community, which is Galen Catholic College. Over term two we move from opening up and sharing who we are, to showing what we do as educators to help our students reach their full potential as learners. A key component to showing what we do is engaging our community in learning. Just before the pandemic commenced, I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Karen Mapp, a senior researcher in partnerships among families, community members and schools, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She highlighted the importance of engaging families in the education of their child and the increased outcomes for students that comes with deeper relationships between families on school based around learning.

In showing what we do, we are moving to a deeper engagement in learning. This is currently being done through our Learning Walks, which myself and other educators at Galen Catholic College are currently running. Learning Walks are not school tours, they provide opportunities to see learning in action, to ask questions and to understanding the learning intentions of a specific lesson.
I have run Learning Walks in both secondary and primary schools as an educator and for many of the adults who participate in them it is the first time that have had a “real” look inside a classroom since they left secondary education as a young adult. The next stage, which I believe is the most important in engaging families in learning, is developing a strong relationship between the student, the family and school based around learning goals. A key point of Karen Mapp’s approach to family engagement was providing opportunities for students, families and educators to come together a design learning goals. Towards the end of term two we move into the learning goal space with our new Year 7 families. During the sessions we will come together and design learning goals which we can all work together to help support, grow and achieve. The move out of the restricted, closed community which has been education since March in 2020, is proving to be an exciting opportunity for all members of the Galen Catholic College community to engage in a relationship where learning is at the core. Happy days Darta

Recount of the 2022 9H ReWild Hike
Our trip started at the top of Hotham Heights. We got out of the bus and were greeted by the sun and snow. Everyone was excited to begin the hike. We heaved on our packs and began hiking the uphill slopes. The hike started off a bit slow with many of us still adjusting to the weight of the packs. We took a quick break at the biathlon shooting range. Along the walk, we made stops to read information panels about the culture and stories of the Gunaikurnai peoples. After a long 7km walk, We arrived at the JB Plain Hut where we took off our packs and began to set up our camp. After setting up our tents we got out our Trangia stoves and started cooking dinner. After a filling meal of pasta, we washed our stoves and sat down around the campfire for some stories, games and riddles from Bronte. We played a bit of black magic, my magic stick and many more riddles and jokes provided by teachers. Mr Girolami even told us the famous ex-tractor fan story. As the night flew by, many of us walked out onto JB plain to take photos of the beautiful sunset and shooting stars. Mr Sinclair showed us the milky way galaxy and the dark emu constellation which intrigued many. Many of us enjoyed hot chocolates before going to bed. After a long night for some, we woke at the crack of dawn to a beautiful sunrise. We ate our breakfast, then packed up camp. During our final check we found

the famous grey cup which sparked long arguments about who was the original owner of the cup. No one owned up so Holly had to carry it. Later that morning we set off for the second leg of the hike to Dinner Plain Village. On the way, we stopped at a scenic lookout on the side of the hiking track. Where we took our group photo. After a little break, we set off again. We arrived at the village and were all relieved when we loaded our packs onto the trailer yet sad that the hike was already over. After a stretch and snack we set off for home. The bus trip home was certainly an interesting one because we shared our family heritage. We stopped in Bright for lunch for a quick break and then drove back to school. Overall it was a really great trip and an amazing learning experience. By Hunter Csihar & Hamish Lewis

Galen students share STEM knowledge at their old primary school
Patrick Dissegna (Year 10) and Bethany Dissegna (Year 9) have been going to back to volunteer at the Wangaratta Primary STEM night ever since they left their old Primary school. Wangaratta Primary teacher, Kylie Robertson, organiser of the evening, just loves having Pat and Bethany, their alumni, come back and share their STEM Knowledge with the staff, students and families. Each year Kylie borrow equipment from the DTAC Wangaratta Digital Lending library. Patrick and Bethany are very familiar with the equipment, as they have often volunteered during school holidays as mentors in the DTAC Robotics and Coding Holiday programs, not to mention they are part of the Galen VEX Program. The night was a buzz with young students and families, all engaged in a wide range of STEM Activities. To have great role models, in Bethany and Patrick from Galen, giving back to their old school, was great to see. Well done Patrick and Bethany #GalenProud Find out more about DTAC programs at: https://dtac.zone
