Seeds of Change planted for sustainable Year 9s
Galen’s Year 9 Seeds of Change Integrated Studies students Charlie Eames, Charlie York, John Blake, Charlotte Harris and Lily Cairns pictured among their thriving school garden. During term 2, Galen’s year 9 classes have been focussing on food sustainability and how what we eat can change the world. Through the ‘Seeds of Change’ course as part of the Integrated Studies unit, the cohort has learnt how to eat more sustainably and what we can do in the future to create a more sustainable environment for us and the people around us. In addition to theory work, the course is complemented by practical work in the Galen school garden, whereby students have been hard at work trying to create a garden that is sustainable whilst also creating a safe and fun environment for classes in the future. The students have been busy making wicking beds that use less water with the hope of producing lots of food for the school and community. Galen was lucky enough to be the recipient of the Scotsburn Nurseries - Seedling Tray Package
Grant to help facilitate the program, and the students’ veggie garden is thriving! Year 9 student Charlotte Harris commented, “By the end of the unit we are hoping to take away ways we can become more sustainable in the way we eat and live with our friends and family. The seed has been planted in our brains, now we just have to take care of it.”

Italian Opera in Melbourne
On Friday the 13th of May, students from year 9,10, 11 and 12 Italian classes travelled to Melbourne to watch the opera ‘La Traviata’, a tragic love story set in Paris. We left school at lunch time and arrived in Melbourne around 4. We all got dressed up and went to dinner before the opera started at 7:30. La traviata went for around 3 hours, with a few intervals in between. The set was amazing. After the show around 11, we travelled back to Wangaratta, stopping in Wallan for a late night snack and arrived back to Galen in the early hours of Saturday morning (around 2:30am). It was a great experience and we all look forward to it again next year!

Student Representative Council 2022 In 2022 we have expanded opportunities for student leadership at Galen Catholic College by forming a Student Representative Council (SRC) in which students use their voice to raise concerns and work on action plans that can benefit the Galen community. This team complements the House Captain leadership team and is comprised of Year 9 to 12 students, led by our Galen Captains Mietta Habets and Xavier McKenzie. Key issues that they have already started discussing and working on projects include; improving the Year 9 learning space, respectful relationships and conduct in our College, Awareness campaigns for social groups in our community climate change/environment and mental health of our community members. Membership is open to any Year 9 – 12 students who are interested in making change and providing student representation to help improve the Galen College journey for its members. Your team is pictured above and if you want to discuss anything or even become part of this team see them, or contact Mrs Ren White ren.white@galen.vic.edu.au for more information. Meetings are held every Day 5 (Friday) at lunch in the Resource Centre. Feel free to come along to our next meeting on Friday 24th June. Ren White Student Leadership Leader

Food & Fibre Day 2022
VET Agriculture students and a handful of Year 9 and 10 students interested in the world of agriculture travelled to Dookie on Friday 27th May for Victoria’s largest annual agricultural careers day. Students selected 3 workshops from a range of 22 interactive workshops. School teams also participated in the Young Farmers Challenge during the lunchtime break. Workshops included: Sheep, Genetics, Drones, Dairy, Beef, Transport, Hydroponics, Bees, Vet Tech, Water, Agribusiness, Grain, Cotton, Insects, Poultry, Bush Foods, Forest Tech, Viticulture, Equine, Sustainable Agriculture, Virtual Reality and Plant Science. Some of the students thoughts included: “It was a good day, the sessions I went to were Beef, Wool and Vet Tech sessions. They were informative and well presented with visuals and actual hands-on experience as if we were in the workplace” “The 3 sessions I chose were Dairy, Beef, and Tractors. The Dairy Industry session was very interesting, we got to see a fully robotic Dairy with a very informative tour. The Beef industry session was knowledgeable and engaging, it gave a good explanation on the process of meat production. The Tractor session gave you an insight to the latest technology used in newer models, including GPS systems, safety technology and also autonomous tractors” 6

Don’t miss the opportunity to discuss key changes to Senior School options at Galen in 2023.

Senior School Reforms 2023
Victoria is moving to a new integrated senior secondary certificate that will bring together our two senior secondary certificates, the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). This will give all students the learning opportunities to develop the skills and capabilities needed to succeed in further education, work and life. The VCE Vocational Major will prepare students to transition successfully into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, some university Diplomas, TAFE or directly into employment. The VCE Vocational Major will support students to develop both academic and practical skills. It employs a more diverse range of assessment strategies rather than exams, alleviating some of the pressure that students face when considering the VCE. More details will be provided at the annual Senior School Information Evenings on Year 9 into 10 information Wednesday 20th July Year 10 into 11 information Thursday 21st July
Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund (CSEF) CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from: https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/camps-sports-and-excursions-fund/policy Closing date: You should lodge a CSEF application form at the school by 23 June 2021 7
