RICHARD BRAM Street Photography
Richard Bram did not begin photographing seriously until he was thirty-two. Better late than never, one is tempted to say when viewing the great number of magnificent photographs and work series he has thus far achieved in his career. Either he has had extremely good luck in his search for images, or Bram has an unerring photographic instinct for extraordinary situations. In any case, his pictures capture everyday moments from our everyday world. His photos are humorous, droll, sometimes sarcastic and ironic, yet always full of sympathy for the protagonists of his scenes. Richard Bram's studio is the street. Here more than anywhere, what count are the art of a selective glance and the gift of anticipating what is coming. In the fraction of an instant, the photographer must be prepared for the emerging image though he may have no prior inkling that it will appear. In preserving these fleeting moments and transposing them into timelessness, Bram fits seamlessly among the great names of classical photography. CartierBresson described this strategy as proceeding on velvet paws and with Argus eyes. In the hectic bustle of the big city, Bram's photos bring time to a standstill. His dramatic pictures are an unusual narrative form that intensely presents us with upbeat anecdotes and instructive criticism. His photography is honest and without artifice. That counts for a lot in our times, when authentic photography has become a rare article.
