D’Orsay & D’Orsay

Galerie d’Orsay, Boston When Galerie d’Orsay opened its doors in 2000, founder Sallie Hirshberg’s vision was to establish one of the world’s foremost art galleries dealing with Master Works. Sixteen years later, she has accomplished just that, with a robust collection featuring the finest of Old and Modern Masters, and internationally celebrated contemporary artists. Galerie d’Orsay continues to host Boston’s most anticipated exhibitions each year, particularly those celebrating one of the most beloved movements in art history, Impressionism. Since the 2002 exhibition, “Masters of Impressionism,” the gallery’s collection continues to be unparalleled and rich in paintings, lithographs and etchings from the world’s most important figures of Impressionism. Providing clients with specialized knowledge of Master Works and connoisseurship, the gallery also maintains an active research staff, skilled in locating and acquiring particular artworks for collectors with individual interests. Priding itself on strong relationships with major collections and institutions throughout the world, while also collaborating directly with artists' estates, Galerie d’Orsay consistently curates prominent exhibitions for its clientele. Galerie d’Orsay also maintains a strong reputation as an avid supporter of the arts, with numerous museum and charity partnerships over the years. Utilizing its vast resources, the gallery has raised significant funds and invested great efforts to support iconic art institutions, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, among others. As the gallery continues to expand into contemporary art, we have always remained faithful to our roots, firmly founded and continually inspired by our muse and inspiration, the Musée d’Orsay. We are thrilled to present to our valued clients and art lovers, our newest collection of Impressionism, Post Impressionism and Modern Masters as we bring the City of Light during its brightest time to Boston.

Le Musée d’Orsay, Paris Home to one of the most internationally celebrated and beloved art collections in the world, the Musée d’Orsay welcomes visitors worldwide to take in its impressive works from the birth of Impressionism to Modernism. The museum itself is a grand work of art with as colorful a history as its impressive art collection, home to some of the greatest works in art history. At the turn of the nineteenth century, Paris was the cultural capital of the world, hosting the 1900 World’s Fair. In anticipation of the crowds flocking to the City of Light, a glittering, new train station, the Gare d’Orsay was constructed on the site of the former Palais d’Orsay. Construction began in 1897 by talented French architect and artist in his own right, Victor Laloux. Blending modern, industrial structures with the elegant, neoclassical architectural style of Beaux-Arts, the Gare d’Orsay was unveiled on July 14th, 1900. Boasting modern features, such as elevators and underground rail tracks with mechanical lifts for luggage, the Gare d’Orsay became the head of the southwest French railroad network, hosting the wealthiest travelers in Europe. As rail transportation technology advanced, the Gare d’Orsay ceased operation as a train station in 1939 when its platforms could no longer accommodate modern, longer trains. The Gare d’Orsay framework then served a variety of purposes, from being a World War II mailing center to a site for movie sets and press conferences. Facing demolition in 1973, the Direction des Musées de France discussed converting the former train station into a grand new museum, representing art from the late nineteenth century. The decision to construct the new Musée d’Orsay came in 1977, when the building was officially declared a historical monument. On December 9th, 1986, the Musée d’Orsay opened its doors and quickly became one of the most visited museums in the world. To represent the great diversity of artistic creation throughout the western world between 1848 and 1914, the museum acquired its collection from three establishments in Paris: the Louvre Museum, the Musée du Jeu de Paume and the National Museum of Modern Art Paris. Today, the Musée d'Orsay's extensive collection includes paintings, sculptures, graphic design and photography by master artists such as Eugène Boudin, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Eugène Delacroix, Paul Gauguin, Gustav Klimt, Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Georges Seurat, James Jacques Joseph Tissot, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh and James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
