Artist statement Having lived in New York City for a long time, I wanted to convey a very different topography in my landscapes to contrast the bustling city environment. Now, I work in a studio near the ocean that enables me to focus on the atmosphere and simplicity of my surroundings. The studio is open to the ocean air and the elements play a significant role in my work. The breeze moves mineral spirits across the canvas and I incorporate crushed seashells in my paintings, imbuing each piece with the organic elements of nature. These works play on the elemental values of sun, water and morning mist to capture the spirit of the landscape. Some have observed that my paintings almost impart the aroma of the earth. Each has an underlying sensual quality which will emerge in some surprising manner to reveal the painting’s essence. This comes from my intimate relationship with the subject matter. In my paintings, I also explore the transformational qualities of light, using the subtle nuances found in refracted morning, afternoon or evening light to embody a particular moment in time. Perhaps these sensibilities are a result of having grown up on a farm in rural Michigan — and a flower farm, at that. While still appealing to the senses, the landscapes are also somewhat evocative. They return the viewer to a seemingly lost time in which humans interrelated on more fundamental levels with nature. In addition, they speak to today’s need for increasing environmental awareness, as well as preserving the natural setting. I have been a resident artist at the Vermont Studio Center and served as a visiting artist at a number of workshops where I also taught landscape painting.

Buist’s work has won praise from The New York Times and has been shown in museums and galleries throughout the country, including the Andrews Art Museum, Andrews, North Carolina, Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Archives, and the Long Island Art Museum, in Stony Brook, NY. She has been a resident artist at centers in Vermont and Virginia and her paintings are part of myriad prestigious private collections internationally.
“ Ms. Buist’s small, swiftly captured sensations can be particularly convincing.” The New York Times, Phyllis Braff “ There is a generous amount of visual energy in Kathy Buist’s Long Island and Vermont scenes, so richly brushed they make the paint seem almost sensual. Her views are powerful and successful, for each wide stroke abbreviating a unit of vegetation takes on a comparatively grand scale in this format.” The New York Times, Phyllis Braff Selected Exhibitions: 2014 Galerie d’Orsay, Boston, MA 2013 National Arts Club, New York, NY 2012 Holiday House, New York City Top Interior Designers Affiliate of Susan G.
