It has been a true honor representing Bruno Zupan over the past two decades here at Galerie d’Orsay. As we celebrate such a joyous milestone in Bruno’s life – 80 wonderful years spent following his passion for art! – it seems appropriate to reflect on his extraordinary career. Whether capturing the Mallorcan sun reflecting off the Mediterranean Sea, the water glistening through the ancient Venetian canals, or the snow as it sparkles through the historical cityscape of Boston’s Back Bay… it’s not surprising that Bruno’s work has garnered such critical acclaim over the years. More than anything, Bruno shares his memories of places he’s stood and sights that have inspired him. Familiar or foreign, his paintings carry us away to a different time and place. Bruno Zupan’s unique combination of traditional impressionist brushwork and dynamic spatter painting has long-defined his place in art history. His canvases find homes in many prestigious public and private collections around the world; just this past year, Bruno was celebrated with a solo exhibition of over one hundred paintings at the W.C. Bradley Co. Museum in Columbus, GA. Without a doubt, Bruno Zupan possesses the finest credentials of any of our living artists. Here we are, having come full circle from one of Bruno’s first ever exhibitions: more than 50 years ago at our very own Boston College! With a milestone such as this, it is with great pleasure and pride that I present BRUNO ZUPAN: A RETROSPECTIVE, celebrating a lifetime of art.

One of my favorite roles in working with Sallie and Kristine as Co-Director of Galerie d’Orsay, is my artist-liaison with Bruno Zupan. As such, Bruno calls me from his studio almost weekly throughout the year whether from Mallorca, Venice, Columbus, or New York. He shares his newest thoughts and inspirations with exuberance, his voice breathless with excitement. In turn, I’ll share our collectors’ stories of gratitude and appreciation for his work, and perhaps plant a seed for what might interest them next. The highlight though, is listening to Bruno and feeling his passion as he describes a different approach or how he’s begun a new series of paintings he can’t wait to unveil. He speaks of the poetic nature within his paintings, and the magical effects the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Chopin or Mozart’s Symphonia Concertante have on him as he develops these innovations in his studio. Indeed, Bruno’s paintings are his gift to every collector here at Galerie d’Orsay, and I will cherish forever the joy of our conversations. To our dear friend and colleague: Happy 80th Birthday, Bruno!

Now, as Bruno celebrates his 80th birthday, his career has come full circle as we celebrate his most recent body of work and the Museum of Fine Art event that honored Bruno as the only living artist to receive special participation in the prestigious Art in Bloom exhibit. In the top echelon of American art museums, this is a tremendous honor.
