PREFACE 序 言
“Ora-Ora? That is the gallery who represents the chubby woman!” I heard from an art lover sharing this comment with a friend at an art fair last year. Over the past few years, we have put a lot of effort into promoting Xu Hongfei’s art to collectors and the public. Not only did we introduce his private collectible pieces, we also brought his public lifesize sculptures to the community in Hong Kong, in hopes that the public can have a chance to share Xu’s fun and joy in his works. We have also brought collectors to Xu’art studio for tour and further understand the creative processes of this very serious and skilled sculptor. Xu’s achievements throughout his art career has been relatively smooth. From going through art education since primary school to college to becoming Vice Dean of Guangzhou Sculpture Institute, Xu’s path was very academic. Since his parents were factory workers by profession, Xu never suffered directly from the impact of the Cultural Revolution and his artistic pursuit was never disturbed. Xu is not interested in lingering on the memories of that era in his artistic creation. Instead, he prefers to establish himself through exploring the emotion of joy and fun, and expresses them via the symbol of chubby women. Some may feel that Xu’s art is relatively simple and almost too easy to appreciate as there need not be a museum curator, or critic to accompany a collector to “analyze” his pieces. Laughter, warm smiles, chuckles and irresistible touching often follow when people come across Xu’s chubby women creations. Xu’s works naturally lighten-up most people’s mood. It is also important to note the extraordinary technical merits of his pieces. Not only is it not easy to create a single figurative sculpture expressive to many viewers, but also more difficult to make a group of figurative sculptures e.g. “A Merry Victory” expressive and interactive. Xu is extremely meticulous in defining the actions of each and every group of chubby women, and develop the ambience and necessary context to give maximum impact to his art. Xu’s everyday-life themes and carefree style of creation have become his unique mark. While he is often shy and quiet in conversations, Xu mainly expresses his passion and life experience through his works; not necessarily depicted by these nascent & positive themes, but more through the feeling of joy and fun these creations instill.
「Oｒａ－Oｒａ？就是那間展覽肥女人的畫廊呀！」去年在一 個藝術博覽會上聽到一位藝術愛好者這樣跟朋友說。過去數年， 我們致力把許鴻飛的作品推廣給大眾及藝術收藏家。我們不止介 紹他具收藏價值的私人精選作品，還把他的大型公共雕塑帶來給 香港市民，希望大家有機會分享許灌注在他的作品之中的欣喜和 樂趣。我們也曾引領收藏家到訪許的工作室，讓他們更了解這位 認極度真、技藝卓越的雕塑家。 從小學的藝術課程到榮任廣州雕塑院副院長，許的創作成功路是 頗平穩及偏向學術性的。他的父母親都是工廠工人，他沒有在文 化大革命中遭受迫害，他對藝術的追求亦沒受打擊。創作靈感方 面，與其執著於這段歷史回憶，許則藉著肥女人探索及表達一種 融合歡樂及藝術的態度。 或者有人會覺得許的作品欠缺哲學、深度，無需策展或藝評人去 分析。但十分可貴的是，看到肥女人雕塑的人都禁不住會笑，並 忍不住觸摸它們。許的作品有替觀眾驅散陰霾，回復笑臉的效 果。更值得一提的是許非凡的技巧。要做一件能表達心情意境的 單人雕塑也殊不簡單，許還能夠表現一組人物之間的氣氛和互 動。就如大型作品《快樂的勝利》內，許對每一個角色的動作及 表情處理都十分精細，從而製造出最有活力的效果。他作品內表 達的日常及開朗括達已成為他的獨特標誌。雖然他個人有時顯得 內向寧靜，但從他的雕塑中可看出他對生命的熱情。
This year, we want to further share the fun with you by bringing to Hong Kong his 10-meter long masterpiece, “A Merry Victory”, which was chosen to represent China to compete in the 3rd Anniversary Olympic Sport & Art Contest in Switzerland during Beijing Olympics in 2008. Hopefully, you will enjoy Xu’s art as much as we do and be able to touch and feel the chubby women Xu created.
今年，我們想再一次令大家感受到許雕塑的歡愉，所以把他的十 米長傑作《快樂的勝利》帶來香港。這作品曾在去年北京奧運 時，於瑞士的第三屆奧林匹克與藝術大賽代表中國出賽。希望您 會跟我一樣能親身體驗及接觸許創造出來的肥女人。

WORDS FROM MY HEART
When Galerie Ora-Ora were preparing to publish a catalogue of my work, Ms Henrietta Xu asked me to write something for her. I couldn’t think of anything straightaway, which was a bit embarrassing, but for all their support and enthusiasm, I can’t possibly let them down. So, I’ve gathered the following thoughts. Working with Galerie Ora-Ora has been a real pleasure. It is their passion and persistence in art and promotion that influenced me, and stimulated me with the passion to continue to create. At the same time I have made a lot of friends through them, and am very pleased. Recently, I have created a few new works, and have been trying to make a breakthrough in terms of sculptural language, concept and ways of representation. Yet, the finished works always seem to be lacking in something, which is a regret. Nonetheless, I am pleased that there are certain new elements to these works, and I hope viewers will take their time to experience them. I’ve read an interview in which the reporter asked the artist, “Which do you think is your best work?” And the artist replied, “My next one.” And I can totally empathize with that. In their artistic exchange, Xu and Huang traced back to the ancestors of mankind and represented them with cunning. Referring to the biblical story where Adam and Eve felt ashamed of their nakedness, Xu and Huang made them conceal their body with a piece of cloth. Yet, the signs of their sexuality only became more prominent and noticeable as a result.

SELECTED BIOGRAPHY 簡 歷
Born in Guangzhou in 1963, Xu Hongfei had expressed an interest in art at a young age. Throughout his education he took on substantial artistic training and eventually entered the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to specialize in sculpture. Within a few years he was actively involved in numerous public sculpture projects in different parts of China. In 1995 he opened his own studio to concentrate on his personal creative production. His remarkable technical skills allowed him to be artistically experimental and stylistically flexible. His unconventional view on the aesthetic of the female form was discerned two years later when he began making sculptures of plump women. Xu has exhibited in France, Hong Kong, China and Thailand; and his work is collected by private as well as corporate collectors. He is currently the Vice Chancellor of Guangzhou Academy of Sculpture and Member of Guangzhou Culture and History Society. 生於一九六三年廣州，許鴻飛從小便對藝術有濃厚興 趣。從求學時期他便不斷報讀各類藝術課程，最後考 上廣州藝術學院，主修雕塑。短短幾年內他已活躍於 中國各省的公共雕塑項目。一九九五他開設屬於自己 的工作室，拓展他個人的藝術創作。他的非凡技巧使 他有空間探索各種不同風格及表現方式。兩年後，他 開始以略胖的女人做雕塑題材，顯示出他與別不同的 的審美觀。許曾於法國、香港、中國及泰國展覽，他 的作品亦被各國的私人或公並機構收藏。現時他為廣 州雕塑院副院長及廣東省文史館館員。
