Lim Tianyi In this book I will show you the process I used to create my first mobile app, a simple recipe book app. A few months after submission into the App Store in January 2014, my little book and its app generated a net passive income of $2,706.42. This book you are holding is not a theory book, but a tried and tested case study and guidebook that has the potential to change your financial and economic life. In recent years, I have observed a new trend in the IT business: the app business. Since then, I have studied and discovered the secrets of how successful multimillionaire appreneurs developed the mobile app business. I began to learn and experiment these ideas and strategies in my secret lab‌ (My bedroom) I want to share with you the simple steps of creating a successful app business. And by the way, I do not know how to program any iOS or Android app at all, and neither do you. If you are an app developer yourself, then you will have a greater advantage over other app developers who do not know what I am going to reveal in this book. In 2012, just four years after smartphones and iPhones were launched, these new phones broke past PC and Mac sales. This is an astounding growth rate, probably due to the fact that they were lower priced, and mobile phones were needed and used by almost everyone in the world. If there are more users on smartphones, than users on computers, do you think there will be more people using computer programs and playing computer games, or people

Even if you have missed the wave, like me and the rest of the 99.99% of the world population, it’s not too late to take advantage of the growth of the app business. Lim Tianyi How I Discovered the Mobile App Business I heard about mobile apps in 2008 when I heard my friends talking about how cool their iPhones were. Back then I was using an HTC touchscreen phone. I thought I was cool, until the touch screen started to malfunction and I wasn’t so cool after all. My more adventurous friends were the first few to buy the new iPhone from Apple. What was different about the iPhone was that it had so many apps, like maps, torchlight and other cool games. With so many apps, the iPhone looked like it could do anything. I even remember seeing people releasing funny iPhone videos on YouTube, showing that we could use the iPhone as a showerhead, TV remote control, and even a hand grenade! It was hilarious. I bought one to replace my HTC phone. It was a 3G model and I fell in love with it straight away. Back then I was involved in Internet Marketing. At that point, I was making money online through Adsense, affiliate marketing, or selling info products. An avid lover of education, I would always be attending business conferences, and studied many of the latest Internet marketing strategies. However, there were many gurus on the Internet and training programs became more and more common, and didn’t differ greatly from one another. They all said their product was the latest and newest in the market. As I went through each of them, I found that they just had a different way of saying the same thing. Of course there are some

Appsolutely originalities and hard work, and really valuable strategies that were being taught, and I appreciated the hard work these business coaches put into their products to add value to the lives of their customers. However, it didn’t really feel very new or exciting to me. Then I came upon a training program called the Easy App Formula by James Jones, Matt Rhodes, John Rhodes and Jay Boyer. It was an online training program that taught people how to start an app business. This was something new for me and I became very interested as I studied their training program. I never thought of making money with apps because I did not know how to develop apps but this course taught me how to outsource app development at a very affordable rate. (I will also share this with you how later in the book) These app business coaches were encouraging us to start developing apps because it was the new thing and that many business people were starting to use them and many people were making a lot of money from the concept. They said apps could help increase customer reach and create extra passive income. Well, I decided to give it a shot.

How Mobile Apps Can Change Your Life As I continued to occasionally publish new apps and start my journey in the app sphere, I realized that mobile apps indeed did work, and that there were people who wanted to use them. I

Lim Tianyi discovered that mobile apps not only helped to add value to the lives of the users, but were also an amazing source of income stream for the developers. Now, we all know that mobile apps are an intricate part of our lives. We can hardly make do without them now. They influence people. Almost all Fortune 500 companies employ apps in one way or another to communicate their business to consumers, and help better service their clients. Mobile apps are great tools to help us lead better lives. They are educational resources and sources of entertainment. I am sure you have heard of many apps that are really junk apps, but most of them have found their way into our daily lives. The apps we use help us to work better, faster and be more organized. Apps are very versatile. They can be anything you want them to be. What I came to experience about being an appreneur, is that it is a new way of life. Every single day, there is someone who downloads my app and it impacts them in a certain way. Best of all, I get paid to do it. Do not worry, you will learn how to as well. You may ask, how do I get paid? I do it by monetizing my app. Monetization can occur in many different ways. Different apps require different monetization models and strategies. Monetization simply means implementing ways of making money from the app. I will also share more with you later in the book.

Appsolutely What is important for you to understand is that the opportunity exists now; Mobile apps are still in the infancy stage, with only a very small percentage of apps-to-user ratio in the world. What are you waiting for? Jump on board the appreneur bandwagon and get paid for creating apps you are passionate about. Imagine what you could do with that additional $1,000 a month in passive income 90 days from now. What would you do? Imagine you are making another $3,000 a month in passive income, six months from now, how would your life change? Where would you travel? Who will you give to? What will you buy? Being An App Maker Is Not A Job, It Is A Business When I mentioned that I get paid for creating apps, I do not mean that I am ‘just’ a paid app developer. Being a paid app developer is a job - each project is paid between $2,000 to $50,000 per app. I do co-own an app development company at appsolutely.sg, we provide mobile app and marketing services. An app developer will always be limited by his time and ability to work. For me, the professional app business is not about looking for app development jobs. It is about building a solid and sustainable business, and online mobile asset that generates passive income. This book is your solution to becoming a professional app business owner and earning a full- time income from parttime app development. I understand that many of you only have a few hours of free time each day, but trust me, that is enough to generate job-replacement income. Creating apps is not a full-time occupation in my life; neither does it have to be for you if you do not want it to

But I am able to achieve financial freedom and have the time to do what I need to do. Most of my finances come from the passive income that is generated from my businesses, not from teaching people how to set up an app business or creating apps for my clients. You may not desire to be the next Supercell or Gungho or any other super app guru out there who makes millions everyday, but an extra $2,000 - $4,000 a month is something most people would not mind having. You can achieve it if you are consistent in your learning and application, and I cannot emphasize how important it is to stick to it and not give up. It is the correct mental belief and attitude you have that will help you to achieve your financial dreams. Are you ready to put in some hard work and effort into your business? There is no magic bullet for app success, no overnight riches on autopilot; you have to invest time, effort, energy and passion into your business. Only with dedication and persistence will you see fruits of your labor. Upon reading this material, some people may make money in their first month (absolutely possible), some in their second month, some in their third month. The secret is to NEVER GIVE UP. Hopping on the next big get-rich-quick training program is a sure way to failure. Step 1 An Unprecedented Trend The Rise Of The App Store

I

n July 2013 Apple celebrated its App Store’s 5th birthday, and gave a brief history of the major milestones that happened in the previous five years, since the time of the official launch of the store in iTunes. It is a very remarkable achievement in such a short amount of time.

2008 Milestones 10 July 2008: App Store was launched in 62 countries with 500 apps available for download including eBay, Facebook, Shazam, MLB.com, At Bat, Super Monkey Ball, Travelocity and Yelp. Have you heard of them? They were the more popular apps at that time. 14 July 2008: 10 million apps are downloaded in the first weekend. This means on average, each of those 500 apps had 20,000 downloads over those few days. Not bad for a start!

Lim Tianyi 2 August 2008: Super Monkey Ball from Sega tops 300,000 downloads in its first month in the App Store with revenue of $3 million. Sega was the first game console I ever owned. My dad bought it for me when I was six years old, in 1991. It isn’t that popular now, and has been taken over by Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony PlayStation. What a pleasant surprise to see their games again in the App Store. Using 20 days from launch as a rough estimate, this game had more than 15,000 downloads and made $150,000 a day. That’s about $10 per download. I would say that’s a pretty impressive monetization. 9 September 2008: The number of app downloads surpasses 100 million worldwide. That’s 10 times the amount less than a month ago. 25 September 2008: Shazam tops 1.5 million downloads, and its users have tagged 20 million songs. That is about 2.5 months after its release in the App Store. That’s about 18,500 downloads per day. 31 December 2008: Facebook is the year’s most downloaded app with almost five million downloads. That’s about 28,000 downloads a day.

2009 Milestones 16 January 2009: App downloads top 500 million worldwide and there are 15,000 apps on the app store. That’s about 2,500 new apps being developed and made available in the App Store monthly.

Appsolutely 4 April 2009: App downloads top one billion worldwide. That’s about 100 million apps being downloaded every month. 6 April 2009: Doodle Jump is launched and the franchise goes on to surpass $10 million on iOS. 8 June 2009: iPhone 3GS announced. More than 50,000 apps are now available on the App Store. Every minute, 3,000 apps are downloaded on the App Store. That’s 50 apps a second. June 2009: ESPN’s Real Racing is launched exclusively on iOS and goes on to be the most popular game in the App Store. 28 September 2009: App Store downloads hit two billion worldwide. There are 85,000 apps and 125,000 developers. The number of downloads have been increasing at a constant rate, but the number of apps are growing at a faster rate than before. Why are there more developers than apps? I think not all developers completed their apps and didn’t manage to release apps into the App Store. After you create your developer account, make sure you get your first app up! 8 October 2009: Jamie Oliver’s 20 Minute Meals is launched and quickly becomes one of the most popular apps on cooking in the App Store. December 2009: Facebook and Paper Toss are the year’s most downloaded apps.

Lim Tianyi 2010 Milestones 12 February 2010: Angry Birds is featured in the App Store, and its download rate increases by 50 times. 3 April 2010: iPad is launched in the Apple stores. I bought the first generation iPad, 64gb and 3G connection when it launched. I still have it! 3 April 2010: Netflix is debuted on the App Store. 30 April 2010: TIME Magazine is launched on iPad. 25 May 2010: The App Store has expanded to 90 countries. 7 June 2010: $1 billion is paid out to developers to date. 7 June 2010: App Store downloads hit five billion worldwide. The rate of downloads has been increasing over the years, probably due to more people owning an iPhone or iPad. 225,000 apps are now available with 11,000 specifically for iPad. 14 October 2010: Cut the rope is featured as App of the Week and it goes on to become one of the most popular games of the year. I see many people playing it in the public places. 28 October 2010: Instagram is featured as App of the Week, and is an exclusive on the App Store. December 2010: Angry Birds, the year’s most downloaded game, celebrates its one-year anniversary.

Appsolutely 2011 Milestones 22 January 2011: App Store downloads cross 10 billion. The tenth billion app downloaded is Paper Glider. 2 March 2011: iPad 2 is announced. More than 65,000 iPad apps are available 2 March 2011: $2 billion paid out to developers. 29 April 2011: HBO GO is launched in the App Store. 9 May 2011: Conde Nast launches subscription program in the App Store. 21 July 2011: App Store is now available in 123 countries 18 August 2011: Temple Run is featured as App of the Week. It went on to surpass 100 million downloads and became one of the most top grossing apps in the App Store. 4 October 2011: iPhone 4S is announced. Over 500,000 apps are available. App Store downloads cross 18 billion. More than one billion apps are downloaded from the App Store per month. That’s more than 33 million apps a day. 10 October 2011: Facebook is available on iPad and becomes the first app to cross 100 million downloads on the App Store. December 2011: Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja are the year’s most downloaded game app. I played Fruit Ninja a lot!

Money paid out to developers is at an increasing rate...perhaps they are now better at monetizing? 5 March 2012: App Store download crosses 25 billion. 5 March 2012: Disney’s Where’s My Water? is the 25 billionth app downloaded. 29 March 2012: Paper by Fifty Tree is featured as App of the Week, and goes on to be iPad’s app of the Year. 21 June 2012: App Store is available in 155 countries. 21 September 2012: iPhone 5 and fifth generation iPod touch is launched. This is the iPhone I am using now. 23 October 2012: iPad mini and fourth generation iPad with Retina display are launched. That is the iPad I am using now. Yeah as you can see, I am quite an Apple product fanatic. December 2012: More than two billion apps are downloaded in December alone. This figure is the same as what it took from the launch of App Store in 10 July 2008 to 28 September 2009, a 14-month period. Temple Run and Draw Something are the year’s most downloaded apps.

Appsolutely Case Study #1: Flappy Bird By February 2014, more than 50 million people have downloaded the highly-controversial app and have generated billions of ad impressions for its creator, even though the game has been taken off the app stores. Dong Nguyen, a single man living with his parents in Vietnam, was still making about $50,000 a day then. Rumor has it that Nguyen was “asked” to remove the game due to legal issues. However, he insists it was because he couldn’t take the pressure from the publicity this game brought, especially after a 16-year-old Chicago teen stabbed his 17-year old brother to death because he teased him about getting a low score of six. What I have learned from this is that it doesn’t take a complicated game that requires thousands of man hours from highly-skilled developers and designers to be successful. A simple game such as this, that leverages on Angry Bird and Super Mario’s iconic name and graphics can also be highly popular and profitable.

It’s one of the top grossing games in the App Store and Facebook. According to money.msn. com on May 31, 2013 post entitled: Why Candy Crush is a moneymaking machine – The insanely popular app has 15 million daily players, stomping nearly every other mobile game. It’s free but still bring big bucks to developer King.com.

Case Study #3: Clash of Clans In Forbes’ article on April 17, 2013, the writer speculated that the makers of this game might be the fastest-growing game company ever. Supercell, the makers of Clash of

It is estimated that if Supercell plays its cards right, it could reach $1 billion by year’s end. It is currently the hottest mobile gaming company on the planet. Case Study #4: Puzzle and Dragons According to a March 27, 2013 article on techinasia.com, maker Gungho reported sales of $92 million in January 2013. It is estimated that the puzzle/ RPG hybrid alone racked up between $54 million and $75 million in January, or between 59% and 81% of Gungho’s sales in January.

e are a 4th dimensional being living in a 3rd Dimensional world. The 3rd Dimension is the material world in which we know, see and feel. 1. Thinking One of the richest kings who ever lived once said, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.� You have to guard your thoughts and thinking life. Whatever you think in your heart, you will move in that direction and become the person you are thinking of. Thoughts are things. They manifest first in the mind, and become a physical reality in your life.

Lim Tianyi In the past, no one could run a mile under 4 minutes. Doctors say it’s a physical impossibility and if you attempt to do so you will die. In 1954,, a race was watched by about 3,000 spectators, broadcasted live by BBC Radio, and commented by 1924 Olympic medalist Harold Abrahams, of Chariots of Fire fame. When Roger Bannister completed the mile, the announcer excited the crowd by delaying the result as long as he could and finally declared, “Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of event 9, the one mile: 1st, No. 41, R.G. Bannister, Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which—subject to ratification—will be a new English Native, British National, All-Comers, European, British Empire and World Record. The time was 3...” And the cheers of the ecstatic crowd swallowed the rest of the results, which was 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. What was amazing was that he had broke this record with so little training, as he was a junior doctor at that time, not a full-time Olympian contestant. However, his record only lasted 46 days. And in two years, more than 100 people ran the mile under 4 minutes. It was because the mental barrier was broken. What was deemed to be a physical impossibility has been proven otherwise. When you break up the word IMPOSSIBLE to I-M-POSSIBLE, you start to see yourself differently. Maybe you think that it is impossible for you to be wealthy, it’s impossible to live a good

Appsolutely life, it’s impossible to start a successful app business. If you think that way, remember Roger Bannister. As Bannister started the run, he was aiming for 4 minutes, even though no one in the world had ever achieved it. He was thinking of setting a world record, and he did it. The way you think is so important. It determines your ability to overcome obstacles, push past setbacks and conquer the fears and pains in your pursuit of greatness. Roger Bannister once said, “The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win.” I believe we are able to do exceedingly great things, above all that you ask or think, according to the creative power that is working inside of us. Focus your mind on what you want to achieve. What is the most common reply when someone is asked, “How are you?” Most of the time we hear replies like “I am so tired.” Real tiredness is in the mind. When your mind is tired you get depressed easily, you lose your temper easily. Our mind becomes tired quickly when we are focused on the negative things in life, like debt, lack of money, comparing with others, unjust treatment and hurtful words.

Lim Tianyi You must train mind to think positive things. How? By focusing on good things that are happening in your life. What can you be grateful and thankful for? Celebrating small victories is also very important. Every small step towards your goal should be celebrated. Don’t wait until you make your first million before you start celebrating. If you start celebrating now, it will take you a shorter time to reach that million dollar mark. Celebrate the fact that you have come across such a wonderful opportunity to live your life differently, celebrate whenever you manage to finish reading one chapter. Celebrate after you have completed the exercise at the end of the chapter. Celebrate when you have thought of the first app that you want to create. Celebrate when the prototype of your app is in your phone. Celebrate when the app is being launched in the App Store. Celebrate when you have your first download. Celebrate when you make your first dollar. By doing this, it encourages you and motivates you to move on to the next goal, knowing that another celebration awaits you at the completion of the task. It’s easy to go into negativity; it is human nature as most people are naturally pessimistic. Positive thoughts are a magnet -- they attract the positive things in your mind. The same is true for fear, or worry, or negative thoughts -- they also act as a magnet, but a negative one, that attracts the unwanted stuff into your life. People who are usually positive and optimistic will have many people drawn to them because they are a source of life.

Dreaming Everything that you see around you, the chair you are setting in, the computer that you are using, the house that you live it, is a product of someone’s vision, someone’s dream. It existed even before you saw the physical product, before its shipment to the store, before its production. It existed as a dream, in the faculty of the mind. In a time when there was great racial segregation in public schools, discrimination in employment and physical brutality from police, there was a man who wanted to change things. He had a dream for black people to be free from their oppression, in the struggle for justice and human dignity. Although the African Americans had legally been freed from slavery, had rights of citizens and full voting rights, many still continued to face economic, academic and political repression. He had a dream for an end to racism in the United States. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and a group of civil rights, labor and religious organizations organized one of the largest political rallies for human rights in United States history. It took place in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, August 28, 1963. It was estimated that about 200,000 to 300,000 people participated in this, ‘March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.’ Observers estimated that about 75% of the people were black.

American’s president Obama is a fruit of this dream. There have been many differing views about Barack Obama, but from my observation in my lifetime, he is one outstanding president of United States. When we were kids, we could imagine ourselves growing up and being anything we wanted to be. As we grew up, we heard our parents, teachers and friends telling us our dreams were not realistic, how we should just get by, study hard, get good grades and find a safe and secure job. Our dreams started to die. I heard a story of an elementary school teacher who was teaching in a drawing class to a group of six-year-old children. At the back of the classroom was a little girl who usually did not

Appsolutely pay much attention in classes. But in the drawing class she did. For more than 20 minutes, she sat with her arms curled around her paper, totally consumed in what she was doing. The teacher found this very fascinating and asked her what she was drawing. Without looking up at the teacher, the little girl said, “I’m drawing a picture of God.” Surprised, the teacher replied, “But nobody knows what God looks like.” The girl said, “They will in a minute.” This 6-year old girl had such confidence, because of her ability to imagine. Most of us lose that kind of confidence as we grow up. Most people when they are met with a setback, give up immediately and believe they are a failure. When toddlers are tying to learn to walk like their parents, they take months to get it right, and have to go through repeated cycles of walking, falling, rising again, walking and falling and rising again and so on. Have you ever heard a toddler fall down while trying to walk and say, “I am a failure. I shall sit for the rest of my life.” No! They would never do that. Instinctively they know they will be able to walk if they do not give up. Ask a class of 7 year olds if they think they are smart, compared to a class of college students. Which group do you think would put up their hands? Which group do you think will shout, “Me! Me!” May I encourage you to start dreaming again? What is the vision that has been in your heart? Activate the powers of your imagination with the limitless power of your mind to dream

Lim Tianyi Exercise: Create a vision board of the things you want to achieve, the life you want to live. Below is a vision board I created for myself in 2013 when I first got into the mobile app business. It’s a collage of the things I hope to achieve or receive.

3. Believing In Merriam Webster’s dictionary, to believe is to accept something as true, genuine or real, to have a firm conviction as to the ability of something. Do you accept your dreams as reality in the future? Do you have the conviction of its ability to come to pass as you take action to achieve them? Do you go to work, knowing without a shadow of doubt that you will have your paycheck at the end of the month? Do you take a plane, expecting that it will take you to your destination? Do you pour hot water into your bowl of instant noodles, with full assurance that it will be edible in three minutes? This is what belief is. When you believe in something, you cannot be persuaded otherwise. When you believe in your dreams, you will do whatever is necessary for it to come to materialize. It is as if you are so sure that it is going to happen, you accept it as true, and you have full conviction of your ability to make it happen.

Appsolutely You may say, well of course I will get paid if I go to work, I have been paid for the last 12 months. Of course if I take a plane from here I will arrive in New York. Of course if I pour water from my kettle into my cup of noodles it will be cooked, I have done it many times. But what about the first time you tried it? It might have been unfamiliar to you, but you went ahead and got what you expected didn’t you? You could also say, “Of course it will work, thousands before me have done it.” You are right, thousands of mobile app makers have gone on to enjoy wealth from the fruit of their labor. If they can do it, if I can do it, so can you. It may seem like alien technology to you, but I assure you that you will find it as friendly as the alien from E.T. after a few months, after acting on what you have learned. In a small town of Mountain View, California, Paul Reinhold Jobs was working as a mechanic and taught his adopted son, Steve, how to take apart and rebuild electronics such as radios and televisions. As a result, his son developed a hobby of technical thinking. After graduating from high school in 1972, Steve enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Steve dropped out of college after six months and spent the next 18 months in creative classes, including calligraphy. He continued to attend auditing classes at Reed while sleeping on the floors of his friends’ dormitories, returning Coke bottles in exchange for food money, and getting weekly free meals at the local Hare Krishna temple.

Lim Tianyi Four years later in 1976, in a period of super computers and mainframes, Steve had a vision and believed that he could put a computer into the hands of everyday people. Steve and his friend Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computers. Steve Jobs never accepted any technical impossibility and demanded excellence in his products. Even the chips on the motherboards – where no one can see, had to be designed and placed neatly. Apple went on to revolutionize the computer industry, and Steve Jobs has become a legend. Not only has he put computers into the hands of everyday people, he also designed the music player, phone, and tablet. For Steve, people who bought Apple products were not ‘consumers’. They were people with hopes, dreams and ambitions. Steve built products to help people achieve their dreams. He believed in himself, he believed in his products, he believed in others. And in September 2012, Apple became the world’s most valuable company. He is a man that we ought to learn from. It was one of my desires to meet Steve and ask him some questions, but unfortunately he passed away on October 5, 2011. He is someone that has really inspired me, and whenever I am thinking about giving up, or when I feel discouraged, I always remember him, how he founded Apple, how he came

Appsolutely back to Apple, many years after he was being released from the company he founded. When you believe in something, you will back it up with action. If you do not have the works to back it up, it means you don’t really believe in it. Let your actions represent the belief that you have in your heart. Our words have the ability to create life or death. It is not what we eat or drink that defines us. What defines us is that which comes out from our mouth. Our words have the ability to frame our world, Our speech has creative powers and calls forth things that doesn’t exist as though they do. We need to be professionals. Professionals are people who profess. Why is the professor one of the most respected and highest-paid careers? Professionals, professors, all come from the root word profess. Speaking is the last element of the 4th Dimension living that will bring about all the elements together. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Whatever you speak

A negative person will always be confessing negative things, and it becomes a curse upon themselves and guaranteed to attract the negative things to their lives. However, our words also act like a keyboard in the hands of a programmer. As a programmer can code a beautiful software with many wonder functions, so can our words code our brain with wonder dreams and visions. As we keep doing that, we will start to believe our visions and dreams, not with our logical minds, but with the passion of the heart. Evander Holyfield was the world’s greatest boxer. You might know him better as the one whose ear was bitten. He has said, ”I’ve done all the work, I have prayed, I am unbeatable. Mike Tyson can’t beat me. It doesn’t matter what state Mike Tyson is, I shall fight my fight regardless.” He is the only boxer who enters the ring with Mike Tyson smiling, dancing, and just happy to be there. He is the only five-time world champion (legend Muhammad Ali won the world title three times). In the changing room, Holyfield would often be seen singing hymns, praying and confessing his victory. If you watch his boxing videos on YouTube, while walking to the room, his

Lim Tianyi lips would be moving, as if he is talking to himself. But I believe that he is always speaking positive things, praying and thanking God for the victory he is going to have. You can’t just feel happy walking up to Tyson, you would have to work yourself to that state. As a kid, he was often told that he wasn’t going anywhere in life because he was from the projects. He was told that he was too young to box. When he shared his dream with others of becoming the heavy weight champion of the world he was told that he was not heavy enough, or big enough. After his setback against Lennox Lewis in 1999 he was told that he was beaten up, beat down, he has past his prime and he was at the end of his youth. If he had believed the naysayers and spoke like them he would have never won the heavyweight championship of the world five times. If we begin to speak negatively about ourselves, we stand in agreement with the naysayers around us. Whatever we stand in agreement with, through the acknowledgement of our words, will determine the power that we have, or the powerlessness in our lives. For every negative word that has been spoken, psychologists say that it takes seven positive words to neutralize that one negative word. Therefore, we need to take the time and discipline to speak positively to negate the negativity around us, and also to keep confessing our future, the things we want to achieve in life.

Appsolutely Let the weak say, “I am strong” and let the poor say “I am rich”. Speak the opposite of the circumstance that you want OUT of, and confess the circumstance you want IN. If you are sick say, “I am healed”, if your marriage is having problems say, “My marriage is good.” You may feel silly initially, but your training will start to take instruction from your self-speaking and start to find a solution for the problems in your life. This is not denial, or self deception, or psycho-ing yourself, but a clear acknowledgement of current circumstances, taking responsibility for them, and activating the power of our words to tap into the power of the 4th Dimension to change our lives. This is the one key that differentiates the successful people from the… super successful people. By our words, we frame our world. I believe that if the pen is mightier than the sword, then the word is mightier than the pen, even if it’s a Mont Blanc pen.

Lim Tianyi Exercise: Write down a definite passive income you want to achieve by a definite date, what effort you will put into it, and your plan to make it happen. Memorize it, repeat it once every morning when you wake up and before you sleep. Write it on a paper, paste it on your wall, or make it your laptop wallpaper. Do something that can remind you of your intention.. Confess this everyday until you have achieved your goal. (e.g. I will make $5,000 a month in passive income by the end of the year. I intend to give one hour a day into app creation and marketing. My plan is to launch a new app into the App Store, once every month.) ery often when someone wants to start in this business, they will often ask, “What app should I make?” There is an endless possibility of the types of apps that can be made, and because of that, we are not sure which is the best choice. Let’s go to the App Store and make some observations about the better performing apps. For demonstration purposes I will be going to the App Store from my iPad. You can go to the App Store of your choice, depending on which device you are using.

I’m not suggesting that you copy them, but that you would have a better idea of what people like, and what makes a great app.

You may notice that games have dominated the top charts. You don’t need to have a game app to make money. On a whole, non-game apps do make money, just not as much as games. Game apps usually take a much longer time to develop, and have much higher cost due to the length of time, skill needed and the large extent of graphics work. Therefore I recommend that your first app should be a non-game app, so that you get it launched into the App Store quickly and have a feel of how it works. In the future you can always get a game app developed when you have got the hang of this. If you really want to make a game app and nothing else, I suggest you go to chapter 10 about app flipping. Buy a game app source code, get it redesigned, and put it in the App Store. My focus here is to help you make money from the app in 30 days.

Many of these educational apps are for children, some of them teach about supermarket grocery item names, spelling and languages. Many of them are a hybrid kind of app, partial game/partial learning. The gaming aspect is to make it more interesting for children to learn.

Lim Tianyi I remembered when I was younger, before there were iPhones and apps, I played mathematical games on the computer. To progress the levels of the game, I would need to solve math questions. The higher the level, the tougher the questions, but it was great fun and I enjoyed learning math on the computer game, much more than in the classroom. However I have also seen many simple learning apps for kids that teach animal names, sounds, and country map recognitions that make thousands of dollars every month. They only have pictures and sound of someone reading the name of animal or country. These are apps that are very simple to make.

You know how to speak the lingo of the market, know what your market likes and how they think. Building an app on your passionate topic will not feel like work, but enjoyable, as you are willing to spend hours researching or testing the app. Passion usually stems from something you are naturally good at. You need to know what your strengths and talents are. What do people say you are exceptionally good at? Are you good at playing the guitar, making wise investments or training an old dog new tricks? Work on your strengths, it gives you the ease in the creation of your app ideas.

Appsolutely So, what am I really passionate about? Let’s look at some really quick ways of how to re-discover what you’re truly passionate about. Let’s call it self-search. It’s a bit like research, but instead of looking for stuff outside of yourself, you want to uncover what’s on the inside of your inner self. To help you understand and uncover what your true passions are, you can ask yourself these two questions (write all the answers down. It will make this exercise a whole lot more useful): What do you love to do naturally? Do you love to sing, play the guitar or solve puzzles? What keeps you up at night? (Besides rushing for a report dateline or an examination paper the next morning.) What are you willing to do for free? What energizes you? What is the first thing you do when you get home? What is the thing your mother always asks you to do less of? When you have passion, you have persistence. These are but a few questions to help you get started. And that is all you should see them as...a starting point. Finding out what you are truly passionate about could sometimes take a few weeks, months or even years. What I have found so far with myself, is that it is an ongoing process, and as time goes by, I try to hone in further and further into the things that I’m naturally good at and enjoy doing.

Step 5 Market Research

I

f you have a cat as a pet you will not feed him with cabbages, cucumbers and carrots. You might buy the juiciest and freshest vegetables from the supermarket but your cat will not appreciate it. There is no demand/ supply match. If you want a happy and healthy cat, you will feed him with fish, chicken or any other kind of cat food. I started out as an Internet Marketer, am now running a couple of Internet businesses and work as a mobile marketing consultant, I would always use Google to find out about market demand. Do I think that there are people looking for my product? Or are there really people who are already looking for my product?

Google Keyword Planner Currently, the app stores do not reveal the search terms and their numbers. The first online tool I will use for research is the Google keyword planner, which provides a rough estimation of how many people are looking for a particular piece of information, product or service.

Appsolutely Next, click on Search for keyword and ad group ideas, and enter the keywords for product or the service your app will be providing. I will use my first app as a case study here. I typed in “Daniel fast recipes”. For now, make sure you’re targeting is set to All locations, English, Google and 0 Negative keywords. As you become more proficient in Google Keyword Planner, you can change the various options to get a better estimate of figures in different countries and languages. Next, click on keyword ideas, and the keyword tool will show you a list of related keywords that people are typing into Google. The number under Avg. monthly searches denotes the number of times that particular keyword has been searched on average over the past few months. The number of searches for my main keyword “Daniel fast recipes” has 12,100, or about 300 searches a day. That is not enormous, but pretty ok. When the users type in related keywords or different wordings of my main keywords, such as “free Daniel fast recipes: or “21 day Daniel fast recipes”, my app may show up as well.

There are other search engines out there such as Yahoo or Bing, thus the actual demand for “Daniel fast recipes� is greater than what is being displayed here. I use Google because they have the largest share of search engine traffic, so it will be pretty reliable to get information from them. This tool also allows you to observe the number of advertisers competing for that keyword. From Low, Medium to High. I suggest that you work on something that is low or medium competition. My target market has a low amount of competition, with rather good traffic. Entering into a market with lesser competition allows your app to have a greater chance of success in the App Store. When you grow to be more confident in the future after making money from your initial apps, you may then want to enter into the more competitive markets to stretch your marketing ability. Exercise: Based on the average monthly searches and level of competition, shortlist the top 5 from the original list of 10 in the previous chapter. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Appsolutely Amazon Head over to www.Amazon. com and see if there any products related to your app idea. Type in your choice of product or service in the search box on the Amazon website. There are 40 results for the keyword “Daniel fast recipes�. Amazon is the world’s largest search engine for buyers. There would not be any products if there were no customers looking for them. By searching on Amazon, you are effectively looking at what people are buying. Using the search results, we can also gauge the level of competitiveness in the market. The more search results there are, the greater the competition. A result of 40 is a rather low number of competition. This will give you a rough gauge of the commercial viability of your app idea. You may have a very interesting idea that you love a lot, but it may not be something for which there is a market. For example, you may love Karate and swimming a lot and you decide to come up with an app that teaches people how to do underwater karate.

Lim Tianyi However, if you were to do a search for “underwater karate”, you may not find any relevant products. I suggest that you choose something that already has a hungry pool of people looking for it, so you will get results faster from your endeavor at this mobile app business. When you are more experienced and successful in launching your first few apps, you can venture into the more untested and risky markets. Who knows, you might open up a whole new popular market that no one has ever seen before! Exercise: Based on the availability of products in Amazon and the level of competition, shortlist the top 3 from the list of 5 in the previous section based on Google Keyword Tool. 1. 2. 3.

App Store The third place you should definitely go to is the App Store itself. The App Store is the most accurate gauge for the level of competitiveness in the market. As I mentioned earlier, you cannot know precisely the level of demand for that product or service you are providing, but you can get a general idea. I will key in “Daniel fast” into the App Store and these are the results.

There’s only one other app that provides Daniel Fast information and recipes! There is only one other competitor in the market. My app would definitely be able to get some traffic and download from the App Store when I have launched it. Exercise: Based on the availability of apps in the App Store and the level of competition, shortlist the top app idea from the list of three in the previous section, based your research in the Amazon marketplace. 1. Monetization Methods

esides the usual paid app method of making money from mobile apps, which is charging new customers for each download of your app, there are a few ways you can monetize your app and we will go through them here.

1. Banner Ads You make money based on the page views you have (cost per impression), or by the number of people clicking on your ads (cost per click). The more times the user uses your app, the more money you make with cost per impression ads. The more times

Lim Tianyi people click on your ads, the more money you make with cost per click ads. Banner ads are usually found at the top or the bottom of the user interface.

2. Full Page Ads Full page ads work like banner ads. The only difference is that you cannot continue to use the app until you close the ad.

From my experience, full screen ads are more effective in terms of monetization as compared to banner ads, as the user must make a decision to proceed, or close the app, or click on

Appsolutely the app. Some experts recommend that banner ads should only be used in free apps, as it’s an expectation that paid apps are more professional and shouldn’t have banner advertisements. I think it would be wise not to look too greedy. J

3. Cost Per Install When your app has a link to promote another app, and when the user downloads, or installs the app that you are promoting, you get paid by the mobile advertisement company. This is known as cost per install, or CPI. CPI programs can pay in the range of $0.25 - $1 per download or higher. Let’s take a look at the next example. It is from a multiplayer racing game called Fun Run. The user is incentivized to click on “Video time!” which will display a video in exchange for coins, which he can use to buy new animals, or gears like skateboards for his cute little game character. At the end of the video, the user will be given an opportunity to download the advertised app. This is an interesting way to monetize. I like it because it’s not so “in your face” like banner ads and it doesn’t irritate your users.

In-App Purchase This way of monetization is for the user to either upgrade to the pro version of the app, or to purchase additional features of the app. Some advertisers have banner ads in their app, and they offer an in-app purchase to remove the banner ads. I recommend that you provide something more than just removing banner ads if you are going for this model. This is the most powerful form of monetization. Most developers would release the app as a free app, so that there is a large number of users, and they would then be given an opportunity to purchase additional features, upgrades or functions in the app.

Appsolutely Notice that the top grossing apps are neither in the top paid nor top free app column, although they are all free apps. It means that the top grossing apps have less downloads than the top free apps, but made more money than the top paid apps. Having in-app purchases is a revenue model you should really explore, as it allows you to generate residual income from the existing pool of users. Why do bars often make so much money? They allow you to come into their place for free (free app), you can enjoy the music and the company of people (social platform), and while you are in the bar, for greater enjoyment and interaction with the people, you will need to buy water, soft drinks and alcohol. The longer they stay, the more they will buy. That’s how bar owners make money. Having a paid app is like opening a buffet restaurant. You make money based on the number of customers that come into your restaurant. No matter how much they eat and drink or stay in the restaurant, your income is fixed. In fact, the longer they stay, the more unprofitable for you! You will notice that the top grossing games are always non-paid, and have in-app purchases. That is because they have the cost of hosting the servers. They would need constant income from their existing users to pay for the hosting. It’s like renting out your investment property. Your tenant pays for the bank loans. These gamers are the ones who pay for the game servers. It makes perfect business sense for them to adopt this mode of monetization.

Lim Tianyi An example of an in-app purchase would be Evernote’s premium version. Evernote is a great tool for documentation and note taking. The free version is already excellent, however they also a membership fee for more features such as greater storage capacity and mobile security. Passionate and heavy users of Evernote would very likely upgrade their app to take advantage of these benefits that regular users do not have access to.

This is the most powerful form of monetization, and you really should think of how you can offer in-app purchases in your apps, be it paid or free.

Lim Tianyi Designing the User Interface When a user has downloaded your app and opened it, what they see is known as the User Interface (UI). First, you must determine what you want to be on the tier one, which is the homepage of your app. The homepage is where all users will arrive when they open your app. It is like the homepage of any website; we also call it the top tier page, where it links to the other category pages of the app. For my recipe app, the home page is where the user can choose the different categories of the recipes. If you prepare this well, your developer would have a much clearer picture of how you want your app to be designed. This helps you and your developer to visualize what the app is going to look like. For this, I would recommend using PowerPoint, or you can draw yourself if you have decent drawing skills. My drawing skills are below negative, so I used Keynote to create the blueprint. And if there are any changes, I could just edit in the Keynote, and export it as a pdf or .jpg file. For a simple app like this, Keynote is enough. But if you want to have fanciful designs on the user interface with trees and clouds and mountains, then you might need to draw, but I suggest drawing the background image on a separate sheet, and then let your developer use your slides to overlay the background image.

Appsolutely At the end of the day, use whatever works for you, that is less stressful and helps you become more productive. Secondly, sketch the tier two page of your app. Tier two pages are the pages where you arrive at from the tier 1 page, or your home page. For my app, the tier two page would be one of the categories that the user has chosen. For demonstration purposes, I will use the category

“Breakfast.”

Thirdly, sketch the tier three page of your app (if any). Tier three pages are the pages where you arrive at from clicking the tier two page. For demonstration purposes, I will use “Chickpeas Snack”.

Lim Tianyi Put yourself in the mind of the user. Is your app easy to navigate? Can they find the information they want intuitively? Keep it simple; too many buttons on the app can be very confusing for the user. Once you are done with your app blueprint, you can start looking for a developer to get the app created. Exciting? Finding Content For Your App If you are creating a content or book app like my recipe app, or any other kind of content heavy apps, you can purchase PLR or private label rights for these contents. There are many PLR sellers on the Internet. Go to Google and key in whatever you need with a PLR, i.e. recipes PLR, skin care PLR, dog training PLR. Not all PLR are available for commercial use, so just look for one that is. I do not recommend wholesale copy and pasting, but do some editing and formatting to make it relevant to your consumers. This is one strategy that can help you save a lot of time in your app planning and creation.

hope that you have gone through the selection process and determined the app that you are going to develop. With that app blueprint in hand you are now ready to start developing your app! With the advent of technology, there are many companies that provide tools and software for you to build the app yourself. These software are simple and easy to use. If you used Wordpress or Blogger before, you will find that they have similar functions. With these app maker tools, you can create your app in less than a day. What I like about these app makers is that the apps are produced simultaneously for iOS and Android. Any changes that you make on the app are applied to both platforms. Beautiful isn’t it? Appsolutely I’d normally choose Intermediate, so I get applicants from fairly good developers, and then negotiate the cost down to my budget. If you are very rich and intend to overtake the world, choose the Experts. J Contractor Type: I’d go for Independent so I can communicate with the programmer directly. If you go through an agency, their costs are usually higher as they would mark up the price to pay for their commissions. Marketplace Visibility: I’d go for anyone who can find this job, so that I can get more applicants to choose from. If you’re planning to create a top secret app, you can use “Only people I have invited can find this job.” Attach a document: You may want to attach a screenshot of an existing app that is similar to the app you want to make. You don’t have to send them your app blueprint for now, only after you have shortlisted them, then it’s safer to share your app blueprint. O n c e done, you can click on “Post a Job”! Lim Tianyi Shortlisting and Interviewing the applicants Like any new applicants to a company, they would need to be interviewed by the manager or boss of the company. This is to ensure the right fit for the job. If you are opening a hair salon, you would need to find someone good with hairstyling, dyeing, rebonding and related hair services. Do not rush to hire the cheapest offer or the one with the most number of “stars� or reviews. Take some time to talk to them, test their responses, and discern their character and technical abilities to get the work done. To me, the most important qualities of a good designer are: Skill: To get a good haircut, you need to go to a skilled hairstylist. To get a descent app done, you need a developer that has the technical skill to make it happen. Look at their reviews, what are people saying about them? Look at their portfolios. Are the apps well designed and modern looking? There are many websites that provide free app creation service, and they are usually not good looking at all. Apps made in the 2009 and 2010 eras are simply very different from the apps now. Beauty and design is very important to clients. It would actually be a norm for your app to look good. Be careful of false reviews, if you see many five-star reviews from the people in the same country as their developer and the cost of the projects are less than $50, you can be sure they are false reviews. They called up some of their friends to give them the reviews.

Appsolutely Service: Back to the hair salon example. You may have found a good hair stylist. When you enter into hair salon, he smiles at you, he greets you, he seems to be such a nice person. He ushers you to your seat and asks many questions about your hair and what kind of style should you want a cut. He promises you that you will look like the next Brad Pitt or Taylor Swift in 30 minutes. Great, since you have another appointment one hour later, and you are a busy person. Then he says he will come back later. He doesn’t offer you tea, and doesn’t tell you how long later. He is irritated when receiving instructions from you. He washes your hair with shampoo and water splashing on your face. When he cuts your hair he knows that there are hairs that fell on your face, in your ear, and that you are very uncomfortable but he does nothing about it. He turns your head roughly from side to side so that he can have his best “angle” to cut your hair. He leaves you halfway and attends to another customer. It has already been one hour but your hair is not done yet. You are running late. When done, you are horrified at how short your hair is. You didn’t want it to be that short. He then impatiently takes the mirror and shows you what the back of your hair looks like. You notice that there’s still hair at the back of your neck; he doesn’t bother to trim it. He criticizes the quality of your hair and upsells you with some of those expensive designer hair products. He tells you to pay at the counter without saying goodbye.

Lim Tianyi From my experience, this is what many freelancers are like. They seem to be very friendly and nice and responsive to you when bidding for your project. They promise their amazing service, how they can do everything that your job requires in a record time. At such a cost, who wouldn’t want to hire them? After you make them your exclusive developer for the project, you find that they are not replying to your emails or Skype messages. They do not deliver the project at the stipulated datelines that they said they would. They come back a few days later and tell you that they were in the hospital, their house was flooded or their girlfriend has just broke up with them. You are horrified when you receive the screenshots or the demo version of your app. It seems so different from the model app that you showed him. He doesn’t follow your app blueprint that you painstakingly provided for him, He doesn’t seem very willing to make changes and give excuses about why it cannot be done. You compromise and lower your standards. You ask him to upload your app into the App Store and he tells you he does not know how. You create a developer account for him and he tells you he did not receive the email verification from iTunes. Your app is one month late for completion, and you are losing money everyday for not being in the App Store. These are real life encounters for me personally. I am sharing them with you to highlight the importance of finding the right developer. I hope that by following what I have shared here you will avoid going through what I did. It may take you a

Appsolutely while, and you need to test a wide range of developers before finding a gem. But we want to find that right person as fast as possible, and waste as little money as possible. Here’s one of the developers that I have shortlisted:

Setting goals Once you have hired the developer, and once he has understood the exact requirements of your app, break down the things you would like to see, and by which date you want it to be completed. When people work with deadlines, they are much more productive. Do you remember writing a 5,000word report in a day because the deadline was tomorrow? When I write a book I may take a week. There is no urgency. That’s why the goal-setting exercise we did is so important. It pushes you, motivates you, and expands your ability to be creative and productive. You need to set goals for yourself, for your freelancers.

By setting goals, you are breaking down the app development into pieces. Sometimes the developer may feel overwhelmed by the work and if you provide the direction, the pace, the clarity, then you are providing leadership to him. What I do: Homepage

Make sure you do the hard work of preparing the information that your developer needs. I need to supply my developer with all the recipes, neatly organized for him. Do whatever you can to minimize his work, and let him do what he is good at. I needed to get another designer to produce all the images of the dishes. We don’t want to overload his work and prolong the completion of the app.

Follow up Check back regularly about his progress. Be nice and courteous. Whenever you start a conversation, start with, “Hi John, how are you?” Try not to start with “Are you done with my app you slow tortoise?” You may feel that deep in your heart, but it is wiser to maintain a good relationship and be patient, rather than giving so much pressure and force just because you are the paymaster. A good relationship with your developer goes a long way, and you never know if he or she can help you in your future app development.

Appsolutely Don’t be hasty, demanding or sarcastic. Appreciate them and thank them whenever they make progress on your apps as it encourages them to keep working harder for you. You want to be different from other employers, who might be more abusive and domineering. You want your developer to respect you and be loyal to you. Always give the benefit of doubt, tell them often how much you believe in their work. Ask them about their lives, their family etc. Do not accuse them or criticize their work or character, treat them with love and you may find yourself winning over a valuable asset.

Creating a Game App If you love games and would like to use your time for productivity by making games instead of just playing them, there is some software that can help you out. In the past, it was impossible to create a game if you didn’t know how to program, but now there are platforms that help you to create them without needing programming experience. Here’s one that I found to be the easiest to use:

Unless you know how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, or any other kind of design software, and have a talent for game design, you would probably need external help. You can post a job with the template I provided earlier, and change it to a graphic design job instead. Alternatively, GameSalad has its own marketplace where you can buy graphics, audio files, or even the entire game template. At the moment of writing, GameSalad is the only game maker that has its own marketplace which allows users to share their creations for a small price to aid other game makers in their app-creation process. If you need something original, then the only solution would probably be to create yourself or outsource it.

fter using mobile apps for awhile now, users have high expectations, and the visual appeal of your app is definitely going to play a major part in the success of your app.

Your app icon is the first thing people look at before they download. You have often heard, ”don’t judge a book by its cover,” but nobody will say, “don’t judge an app by its icon.” A well-designed app is able to attract many people, as it draws attention in the App Store. Imagine that you open up your app store, and you search for a particular type of app, such as “weight loss”. There will be many of them appear in your search results. And it will be the well-designed app icons that draw your attention. Our eyes are captured by images. As the saying goes, “a picture speaks a thousand words.” Pictures create feelings for the person who looks at it.

Lim Tianyi If the app icon wasn’t good looking, potential customers would expect that the user interface in the app would not be up to standard as well. To have a well designed app does not require you to make it complicated. It can be simple but visually attractive. Imagine that the app icon can speak. It would say, “download me now.”

To get an idea of how to design your app icon, you can go and take a look at the other app icons in your market, or related markets. If you are into weight loss, you can browse apps in the health category. Initially I wanted to use my book cover for the app icon, which looked like this: But when it was shrunk down to the iPhone size, the words were hardly visible and the lady in the image became small, hence I needed to redesign the app icon. I went to look through the food category for some inspirations and I found

App Screenshots The next thing the user will look at in the App Store is your app screenshots under your app details. Most people download the app after looking at the screenshots without even reading the reviews and details of the app. Add the most interesting features of your app into the screenshot. Use one screenshot to demonstrate one key point of your app. Browse through the top apps in your industry and emulate the best practices and look at how they promote the key points of their apps through the screenshots of their apps. Take note of the text box, the color of the fonts, box, fill, border etc.

Appsolutely User Interface The user interface is the place where the user will press on the screen to engage your app. It is like a website on your computer, where the user can click on the buttons and read what’s on a web page.

Intuitive The user has to know how to use the app without needing to read an instruction manual. Even a kid should know how to use it. It should be very simple. The buttons should let you know what will happen if you click on it. Using my app as an example, you only see a few photos of tasty food with a title below it. There’s only one thing to do: tap on the image. You know that when you tap on “Breakfast” you will go to another page, probably with a list of breakfast recipes right?

Lim Tianyi Even if you tap on the picture or button randomly it will bring you onto another page with many recipes. And you immediately understand how to move around the app to get the information you need. When you see the arrow, it hints that there is more information when you tap on it. You wouldn’t be surprised to see a detailed list of ingredients and cooking instructions as this is a recipe app. Make it so simple that even the most technologically disadvantaged will know how to use it.

Appsolutely Structure Be systematic and organized when you are designing your user interface. You need to put yourself in the mind of the user, how does he think? How will he move around the app? It would not make sense for me to categorize the recipes according to the type of vegetable, fruit or the number of people the recipe can feed; any average person who knows how to cook will know what vegetable or fruit to substitute based on availability, or to moderate the amount of ingredients to feed the right number of people. My app’s primary purpose is not to teach people how to cook. My app is to help save time for people who are looking for Daniel Fast recipes. Looking at the home page, they immediately will know where to find what they want, be it breakfast, a smoothie, or a soup. My app is structured according to dish types...makes sense? It would not be logical for me to categorize them based on vegetable types like carrot, cabbage, or capsicum, as sometimes there are dishes that would have a mixture of vegetables. Take a look at the app blueprint you created in chapter six. Are there any changes you need to make? Can you make it simpler and more intuitive? Do you have banner ads? Are you going to place them on top or below? How will it affect the user interface? Study how other successful apps in your market structure their apps. Get ideas and learn from them. Think about how their design improves the usability of the app. How is the structure beautifully displayed in the app?

Lim Tianyi Don’t copy them -- make some improvements and adjustments to your app. Make the necessary changes in your drawing or PowerPoint slides and give them to your developer and explain the changes you have made. Let them know early, so that they won’t have to do unnecessary work.. It just isn’t very nice, unless you are paying by the hour, which they might not mind as much. Important: When designing your icons, user interfaces and screenshots, ensure that your designer gives you the different image dimensions for different devices, i.e. iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPad, iPad mini etc.

Step 10 Optimize Your Launch For Top Rankings What is ASO?

I

n the Internet Marketing world, there is a very common term called SEO, short for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a practice to improve the rankings of websites and webpages in the search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing. By ranking well in the search engines, these websites will receive higher traffic, which usually translates to more sales, more lead captures and more publicity. The webpage would need to have a strong title, description, keywords, and content that makes the whole webpage relevant to a specific or a set of keywords. For example, you just graduated from university, and you want to work at Apple so that you can learn more about the mobile app industry. You have an interview with one of the senior managers tomorrow so you go to Google and you search, “how to ace all your interviews”.

Lim Tianyi The results listed are what Google thinks is relevant to what you are looking for and ranks the most relevant and popular results at the top of their search engine. The higher the site’s search rankings, the more traffic they will get to their site. Most people would go through the results in the first page, some second, and rarely anyone goes beyond the third page. In the same manner, we need to do it for our mobile apps. We need our apps to rank well in the search results of the App Stores. I would call it ASO, short for App Store Optimization. We need a strong title for the app, description, and keywords that are relevant to what the target user is searching for. The icons and screenshots are the key ingredients to get people to download the app. But when we are talking about ASO, we want to cater to the search engine of the App Store, the robots and the software that determines the ranking of your app. We will talk more about this later in the chapter. To make the rest of this section more applicable, I would encourage you to setup your developer account if you do not have one.

Creating A Mobile App Developer Account Apple App Store | www.developer.apple.com/programs/ios Apple’s App Store is the first App Store in the world, launched on July 20, 2008 via an update to iTunes. It had less than 1,000 apps. 10 million apps were downloaded in the first weekend. As of June 10, 2013, it has grown to more than 900,000 apps and more than 50 billion downloads. It has a membership fee of $99 per year.

Google Play | www.play.google.com/apps/publish/signup Formerly known as the Android Market, Google announced its release in August 2008 and was made public to users in October 2008, about three months after the launch of Apple’s App Store. Five months after the launch, Google Play had about 2,300 apps available for download. As of July 2013, it has grown to more than one million applications in Google Play and has more than 50 billion downloads. You need to sign into your Google account or create one to register to be a developer for the Android market. It has a one-time registration cost of $25.

The growth of Google Play can be attributed to its availability on many devices, such as Samsung, HTC, Nexus, and Chromebook.

BlackBerry World | www.developer.blackberry.com Launched in 2009, BlackBerry World is the third largest App Store in the world. It has the largest revenue per app at $9,166 as compared to $6,480 and $1,200 by the Apple App Store and Google Play respectively. On January 21, 2013, Blackberry announced that it rebranded the BlackBerry App World to a shorter BlackBerry World in conjunction with the upcoming release of the BlackBerry 10 operating system. At the BlackBerry Live Conference in May 2013, BlackBerry announced that more than 120,000 BlackBerry 10 apps are

Appsolutely available for download in the BlackBerry World. As of March, 2013, there were more than four billion downloads. That’s about 10 times less than the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Which Platform Should You Use? I suggest launching in the platform that you have the device for. First, it is familiar to you, you are passionate about your device, and it will connect with you as you are already using the apps from the device’s App Store. You can have the prototype of the app in your mobile phone or tablet, and you’ll see it all the times. It helps you to visualize it. When your friends ask you what work do you do, you can tell them, “I am a mobile app developer.” I can guarantee a shocked look on their faces and the next question will be, “You know how to program apps?” I get that all the time! They will also ask you what apps you make, can they see them, etc.

Lim Tianyi And when they do, you can show them the app on your phone! If your app is not ready, show them the app icon! As you keep doing this, you are thinking, dreaming, believing and confessing your future as a successful mobile app entrepreneur. I suggest that you launch with one platform first, test it, make the changes, stabilize the app by fixing the bugs, then get it developed for the other platform. As I am a fan of Apple and their products, I created my app for the iPhone and iPad first. I have my apps all over the place, my iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPad 1, iPad 4 and Macbook. It pushes me, it drives me to make the app happen.

App Title Your title is the most important for ASO. For example, I go to the App Store and search for apps that might help me with interviews, I’ll key in “interview” in the search box, and the App Store will display the top search results.

Appsolutely The top five results have the word “interview” in their titles. If possible, try to use your main keyword in your title. Of course, it doesn’t apply to all cases. If your app is about your company, business or website, you will use it’s respective name instead, i.e. eBay, Amazon, PayPal etc. But generally, if you are doing an app that targets a specific market, having the main keyword in your app title is a big bonus for ASO.

Description The next thing the App Store ranking robots will look at is your description. Is it relevant to what the searcher is looking for? Is it targeted? Are you talking about how to prepare for a job interview, or how to prepare yourself as a manager to interview others? Let’s take a look from the top app’s descriptions.

Lim Tianyi The word “interview” has been mentioned many times in the description. The more it appears, the higher its “keyword density” and the App Store will take this into account. A general rule of thumb is to have the word “interview” or its variants in every two to three sentences. Don’t spam the word all over the description, as it will not look natural to the reader. We want to satisfy the App Store by providing relevant content, and also to persuade users to download your app so it can benefit their lives.

Keywords The keywords section is not displayed to the public in the App Store, but it is manageable from your developer account. In your developer account, you should be able to edit the details of your app, such as app name, description, keywords, support url, marketing url, privacy policy, screenshots etc. The list of keywords tell the App Store search engine what your app is about in 100 character or less (iTunes). Apart from your app name or title, this is the next most important factor to your ASO success.

Appsolutely According to Trey Smith from Gameacademy.com, the App Store looks at individual keywords instead of keyword phrases. So instead of inserting the “Daniel fast recipes” and “Daniel fast diet” as two separate keyword phrases, I just need to insert “Daniel, fast, recipes, diet”. It saves me from repetition and waste of character count in this precious 100-character restriction. Here’s a secret that I use to determine what keywords I should use to accurately anticipate what the users might be searching for. I use a tool called Google Trends. You can access it at www.google.com/trends

When you put in your keyword in the search box and start the search, it will show you some pretty interesting information, such as the search volume, search pattern, top keywords and rising keywords. Here’s what I see at the bottom of the page if I searched for the term “Daniel fast”.

It shows me what top keywords are currently being searched, and the top trending keywords related to the keyword. Use the most searched keywords and use them in your App Store account. Here I get keywords like “diet”, “food”, “list”, and “fasting”. You cannot see what keywords other developers are using, but it is likely that they are using the same keywords that you used to find them in the App Store. I’ll also recommend going to the Google Adwords Keyword Planner tool to extract the keywords from your analysis and research, which I have shown you in Chapter 5: Demand and Supply.

Install Analytics The last step before you submit your app for review is to install analytics into your app. Google Analytics provides

Submit App for Approval It may take a few days for the App Store to approve your app. Android is typically faster, within one to two days. Apple’s approval rate may take a week or more.

Reviews The next important issue concerns the reviews that your apps receive. Usually apps that have many good reviews will be well ranked. This is not so much within your control, but you can encourage people to give you a good review by rewarding them or reminding them constantly as they use your app. You may even let your friends test your app and help give you some reviews. I’m sure your friends are nice people. J

Lim Tianyi You may feel that you do not have control over the reviews and this puts you at a disadvantage over your competitors who are in the App Store longer than you are. Not to worry, because if you do your ASO well, you will rank better than others with more and better reviews than yours. Using the interview example, you can see that out of the top six interview apps, only two of them have been rated or reviewed; the other four displayed “No Ratings”.

Taking Your App To The Next Level Now that you have launched your app, what’s next? Change the elements of your app one at a time so you can test the effectiveness and how it affects your app store rankings and downloads. You want to change elements one at a time so that you will be able to identify the change you made that caused the difference in results. Do not leave your app to chance...don’t just upload it into the App Store and leave it to die. In Chinese there’s a saying called, “self survival, self death.” It denotes someone who has been abandoned and left to fend for themselves, such as a child, a pet or a subordinate.

Appsolutely These are some of the things you need to change and test to increase your downloads and income:

App Icon The first and possibly the most important thing you can change is the app icon. There are several things in your app icon that can be tweaked. For example, you can change the color of the icon image, or the color of the border, or you may even want to change the entire design of the icon. Make sure the icon is professionally designed, as it is the most important design work that you need in your entire app.

Screenshots If possible, use up all the five slots for screenshots. Display the top five major benefits in each screenshot. You may insert wording into the screenshot to highlight the features of the app. Make the features sound more exciting. Instead of saying, “Fruit Juices”, I could say, “Thirst Quenching Fruit Juice Recipes”.

Keywords Have you maxed out the allowed characters of your keywords? If not, include more keywords to cover a bigger market. Change the keywords, remove non-performing keywords with keywords that have either more demand or less supply. Test singular or plural versions of the keyword. Recipe or recipes, or both? Go back to Google Keyword Tool or trends to get a better idea.

Lim Tianyi Descriptions In your description, you can have a stronger call to action to download. More people will download the app if you tell them why they should download it. List the benefits in the descriptions. Be honest when you are writing your descriptions. Do not say that you have one million downloads when you’ve got 100,000. However, if you know you are one of only a few apps in that market, you can say, “one of the best apps in the hamster training market...” technically you are right. Just be ethical about your communication. Do not mislead people or give false figures to puff up your app.

Reviews Many apps do not have any reviews on them. And if you have at least one good review on your app, you are positioned very differently from the rest of the apps that have no reviews at all. Let your friends download and test your app, ask them to help you out with some genuine comments and rate your app. Let them know that if it is good, give it a four-star review, if it is excellent, give a five. Also, do you have pop ups in your app to remind your users to give you a rating and review your app? Enable notifications every week to remind the user to review and give you a good rating for your app. If you currently have very poor reviews of your app, it would be helpful to reflect upon the feedback. Do not get angry or upset

Appsolutely if you receive a comment like, ”your app is a piece of junk! It’s slow as a tortoise and ugly like a pig!” There are always negative people in the marketplace who are out to stir trouble. Take the feedback from genuine users and implement the changes in your app and release it as a new update. A new update in the app will allow you to “start afresh” with the reviews.

How To Increase Your Mobile App Income Here we will talk about strategies to improve your download value, which is the average value per download. If you make $1,000 for every 1,000 downloads, you have a per download value of $1. If you are making $100 for every 1,000 downloads, your per download value is $0.10. This section we will explore how you can modify and tweak your monetization efforts to improve your download value and bottom line.

Banner placement Test different positions of your banner placements. If you used Adsense before, you would understand which ad type converts better using the tracking system from Adsense. However, banner placement testing is so much easier with mobile. As the only variables are either top or bottom, in Adsense, you have different banner shapes, sizes, graphics, and so many other factors that make it hard to determine which is the best performing ad type.

Sometimes the ads will not show up if the user is from a particular nation that the advertiser is not actively advertising in. You may switch different ad providers, or use different ad providers simultaneously. Find the optimal rate through testing.

Offer Nag Screen If a particular full screen ad is not converting well, change the ad, or use another ad provider. Conversion means the percentage of users that click on the ad. If you have another app that is relevant to the market, you can cross promote the app in the nag screen as well. That’s what many of the big gaming companies do -- they cross promote their apps, pushing their new apps to the top of the charts in a matter of hours.

Upgrading to Pro Version Can you increase the number of people upgrading to the paid version? Can you include more benefits for doing so? Offering a pro version with just the promise of removing ads alone is not enough. What are some of the things that your users might want to have? You may use the feedback from the app review to determine what else you can include in the pro version of your app.

ike the DIY app makers which I have shown you Step 8: Creating The App, there are many companies out there that are providing mobile app making software for a monthly or yearly subscription fee. They provide templates for businesses so that business people can create apps for their own companies. Freelancers also make use of such services to create apps for their clients. The original software makers sometimes have “enterprise” or “white label” pricing plans for entrepreneurs to use software maker’s software under the entrepreneur’s own company name to create apps for their clients. Seattle Cloud is one such company that provides white label solutions for entrepreneurs.

For a monthly fee of $599.99 you can use their software platform to create apps for your clients, who will then be paying you the monthly subscription fees. Appsmoment.com, pillarapps.com and many other app-making companies in Singapore are taking advantage of such a service. I have come to realize this after attending several mobile app course previews in Singapore and the software they are using seems to be identical to one another and they are charging the students $1,000 a year for using their software. The first year is free of charge. (Not really as they already charge $3,000 - $5,000 for a three-day seminar) It takes just eight students paying $1,000 a year in the next year to cover the cost of using Seattle Cloud at $7,200 a year. It’s pretty lucrative isn’t it? Seattle Cloud also provides great looking website templates for you to start your mobile app business.

Once you have set up your website, payment system, software membership portal etc. you can start to market your website and drive traffic to it. You can promote your new business in major sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, search engines, forums or other blogs. Similar to the app course providers that I have met, you could do the same in your local town and organize courses and seminars teaching others how to create an app that generates a passive income for them. And for those who are interested in creating business apps for their clients, they can use your white label software. It is up to you to set the price points for your students, clients and the number of features and functionalities at each price point, such as; number of apps, number of updates, push notifications, in-app purchases, content sync, app store submissions, tech support etc.

In Singapore, we have a scheme that allows companies to claim up to 160% of their IT related expenses. Many mobile app and web design companies are leveraging on this to encourage their prospective clients to engage their services of up to $15,000 per project, which is fully refundable from the government. Or, if you have an innovative mobile app that has the potential to be the next Twitter or Instagram, you could try out the business grants that schools, government or other organizations are providing to get a seed fund for your business. You can use it to hire developers, designers, accountants, rent servers or any other kind of business expense. Do not let a lack of finances or manpower stop you from pursuing your dreams. I once heard that if a problem can be solved with money, it is not a problem at all.

About the Author

Lim Tianyi brought himself out of a mediocre living from making $350 a month to more than $30,000 a month in personal business profits. Now he’s a mentor to numerous business and non-profit organizations in various industries such as fashion, insurance, fitness, healthcare, dance and community services. He cares deeply about people and is passionate about what he does. He is an author, writer, speaker and consultant.
