Myths and Facts About Financial Aid Myth: Middle-class families do not qualify for fnancial aid. Fact:

Many middle-class families do, in fact, qualify for fnancial aid. Many factors other than income are considered when determining fnancial need.

Myth: I don’t need to apply for fnancial aid. VR will pay for my education. Fact:

Vocational Rehabilitation requires that students complete the fnancial aid process in addition to the VR process.

Myth: Grants, scholarships and/or VR will pay for all of my educational expenses. Fact:

The student and/or parent(s) are expected to contribute to educational costs. For families who cannot aford to make payments, there are several federal loan programs that can assist you with educational expenses not covered by grants, scholarships and VR.

Myth: It is not worth taking out a student loan for a college degree. Fact:

Pursuing a college education is a valuable investment. Research shows that a bachelor’s degree results in signifcantly higher earnings over one’s career than a high school diploma alone.

Vocational Rehabilitation Vocational Rehabilitation is a federally funded state program designed to help state residents who have disabilities and meet certain requirements get the education and training necessary to secure employment. Many deaf and hard of hearing Gallaudet students receive funding from their state VR agencies. For a list of VR agencies in your state, visit www.gallaudet.edu/VRAgencies. Here are some tips for establishing a strong relationship with your VR counselor. •

Meet with your VR counselor early. Establish your career goals as early as your junior year of high school.

Discuss your expectations and goals. Decide how and when you will communicate with each other. Make sure to get a copy of your individualized rehabilitation plan for services.

Get a copy of your VR authorizations, if possible. This is your evidence that your VR agency has agreed to support your education at Gallaudet and will help you with your fnancial planning.

Keep a personal fle for all your VR paperwork. This includes agreements, copies of authorizations, fnancial aid awards (grants, scholarships and loans) and personal budget plans. Plan in advance and refer to your fle periodically to ensure your expenses are always covered.

UPPORT, BUT IT WAS NOT QUITE ENOUGH. THE FINANCIAL AID N. SINCE THEN, I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO RECEIVE MORE GRANTS DET FOR MAKING IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO COME THIS FAR!”
