Morten Steen Hebsgaard Born 1977, Denmark

Observations, experiences and experiments are important points of departure in the artistic practice of Morten Steen Hebsgaard, where the practical or direct relation to everyday life, material and space play a central part in the working process. Just as the scientist in his laboratory, Hebsgaard experiments, dissects and splices objects in an attempt to transform objects into new experiences with new significance and new functions. Morten Steen Hebsgaard is educated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, 2001-2007. In the artistic practice of Morten Steen Hebsgaard, the significance of everyday objects is not only transformed into sculptural works, he also gives art a functional value. This practice of interference or displacement between the social and aesthetical space has taken a dramatic turn, as these common everyday objects are processed and turned into obvious sculptural pieces – and vice versa. The works of Hebsgaard always seem to balance in a constantly fluctuating change of focus between the formalist linguistic knack of art, and what is actually being communicated through the form of the work, as well as through its function.
