From The Sky The Rivers Look Like Snakes

Gallery 16 is proud to welcome artist Jason Jägel for his first exhibition with Gallery 16. From the Sky Rivers Look Like Snakes presents several bodies of work; large oil paintings, works on paper, smaller mixed media pieces, and sculpture. This marks the first time Jason has exhibited oil paintings since Bay Area Now 1 at the Yerba Buena Center in 1997. Jason writes, “As a jumping off point, these new paintings reference the immediacy of my daily brush-pen drawings made in pocket sketchbooks. Currently entering my 20th year of exhibiting, I am driven to loop back over my earliest impulses as a means to push forward.” Jägel’s work cultivates a strong improvisational component born out of autobiographical fiction along with his love of music, comics, and literary fiction. He has created a stylistic form that is immediately recognizable blending elements of abstract painting, comic flatness, and linguistic expression. His spontaneous paintings are often dense accumulations of these influences. He has been featured in numerous solo and group shows since 1995 in New York, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Milan, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Seattle, and New Orleans. Jägel’s work appears in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The UCLA Hammer Museum and the Portland Museum of Art among others. In 2002 Jason Jägel graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Stanford University. Since 1995 he has participated in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows in Barcelona, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, Milan and New York. Besides MoMa, New York and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Jägel is also represented in collections of UCLA Hammer Museum of Art and the Portland Museum of Art, USA, and in numerous private collections. Seventy-Three Funshine, a monograph of his work, was released in 2008. In 2012 Jägel was awarded a fellowship from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. In addition to his rigorous studio practice, Jägel teaches at numerous institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area. Recently Jason created a limited edition project entitled “Take Me With You” for THE THING QUARTERLY. His book “ Hang Glider & Mud MaskJason is a recent collaboration with Brian McMullen, it is published by McSweeney’s McMullens.
