@GALLERYIOM

With our 100th edition falling at the end of last year, it was quite a milestone. After almost 2 years of upheaven for us all, it still felt like we were in the grips of the pandemic at that time. With this month’s ‘bloom’ theme, it seemed appropriate to roll out a bit of a redesign, bringing Gallery up to date as we progress into our eleventh year this August. Cover Image

allery has always been about the people of the island; sharing your events and celebrations, sharing your achievements, your words and your creative work. We’ve also now had over a decade of revellers doing our Paparazzi pages proud. In this edition we have cute dogs, local authors, polo players, TT, the next generation of local artists, innovate local theatre and more.

As we celebrate our eleventh year, Wine Down on Duke Street are celebrating their fourth; four years since they knocked two buildings together to create the cosy cave we know and love today. Read about their story on page 20. While Roy and Anne have been honing their wine list, the students at UCM have been honing their artistic and creative skills, some of which were on show at their end of year show (page 41).

Speaking of art, the Steam Packet Company, in collaboration with SMC Art Consultancy, commissioned an exciting series of artworks for their new vessel, choosing local artists to showcase the island’s creativity. They initially intended to select ten, but they were so impressed with artists’ proposals that they upped it to include fifteen! You can meet the chosen ones on page 36. Remember, if you’re a creative or content creator, Gallery is here for you. We live in the era of reels and grids, but there’s nothing like seeing your work or profile in print. If you’re a photographer that’s taken a great profile image or an artist with work you’d love to share, never be afraid to get in touch by emailing steve@gallery.co.im. We look forward to sharing the island’s creativity for another decade to come. SR

Travel Inspiration for this Summer – and Beyond The Lake District is bursting with breathtaking views, picture postcard villages, captivating lakes, and epic mountains. It’s also within easy reach from the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ports at Liverpool and Heysham.

T

he Lake District has a huge range of quirky activities and pursuits for travellers looking to do something a little different on their Lakes holiday. Here’s a roundup of unusual experiences to get stuck in to in the Lake District this summer and beyond…

Foodie experiences

There are plenty of hidden foodie gems scattered across the Lakes national park, Cumbria and beyond. Running from unassuming Michelin-starred restaurants, quaint little cafés and country pubs to familyrun producers, local produce is proudly celebrated across the region’s retailers and hospitality businesses. For sweet-toothed travellers, you can’t visit the Lake District without trying the infamous Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake – a much loved snack perfect for fuelling your Lake District adventure and travels. Established more than 100 years ago, the fourth-generation family business still resides in the popular destination of Kendal. Or why not try some Grasmere Gingerbread, labelled the ‘world’s best gingerbread’. The W W W.G A L L E R Y.C O.I M

For those looking for something a little heartier, the coiled Cumberland Sausage is surely one of the Lakeland’s most popular dishes? So much so, that in 2011 the sausage was awarded ‘protected status’ ensuring that it can only be made in Cumbria. As many self-catering cottages in Cumbria provide BBQ’s, why not search out a local supplier during your visit - Plumgarths Cumberland Sausage & Farm Shop in Kendal sells a range of award-winning Cumberlands.

Try some local tipple

Experience some local tipple at the Lakes Distillery – a beautifully renovated old Victorian farmstead on the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake. Surrounded by majestic scenery, immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of this working distillery which offers a range of whisky, gin and vodka tours and tasting experiences. You can also tag on a meet and greet with an alpaca at the Alpacaly Ever After herd graze which resides on site! The Rum Story in Whitehaven is housed within the original 1875 cellars and bonded warehouses of the Jefferson family, a prominent Whitehaven family who were instrumental in bringing in exotic products such as sugar and Rum to the British Isles. Allow your senses to be filled with the smells and sounds of the Caribbean as you follow the history of the British rum trade. A perfect wet-weather attraction, immerse yourself in history – and a drop or two of their world-famous Jefferson’s Rum.

Unusual history

Delve deep within the underground tunnels and caverns in the magnificent Fleetwith Pike and experience first-hand what life was like for the miners of old at a Honister Mine Tour. With 350 years of working history there is plenty to discover. A family friendly attraction, the 90-minute mine tours incorporate enhanced reality technology and explosive special effects which will transport you back in time.

The Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick, the home of the first pencil, is a slightly unusual attraction where visitors enter through a replica graphite mine. Discover secret WW2 pencils with hidden maps, one of the largest colour pencils in the world and miniature pencil sculptures.

Explore the Lakes through storytelling

The poet William Wordsworth called the Lake District ‘The loveliest spot that man hath found’ and he was not alone as its stunning scenery has influenced a great many writers and poets. The World of Beatrix Potter is an enchanting Lake District attraction where Beatrix Potter – the English author and illustrator best known for her magical tales of Peter Rabbit and his friends, are brought to life in three dimensions. Perfect for the little ones – step into a magical world where you can walk through Potter’s stories, experience Peter Rabbit’s Garden, and take a little bit of Potter magic home with you from the gift shop. Discover how the Lakes shaped the great poet William Wordsworth’s verse on the Wordsworth Daffodils Tour, where you’ll hear about his life and works, while visiting his Cockermouth home, Grasmere’s Dove Cottage, and the Wordsworth Museum.

Getting there

Bring your car on board one of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Vessels and pack everything you need for your Lake District adventure; be it your walking gear for a hike up one of the Lakes many epic mountains, or bicycles for a ride alongside some of the UK’s most mesmerising lakes. Take advantage of great car offers and enjoy the convenience of driving off the ferry when you arrive to start exploring at your leisure.

Indulge in 4-star luxury

Enjoy a luxurious 4-star break with Steam Packet Holidays at the Lakeside Hotel and Spa on Lake Windermere. During May to September 2022, you can sail from Douglas to Heysham or Liverpool for two people and a car and enjoy a three night stay in a double room with up to three evening meals, and breakfast each morning, from £545 per person.

HELPING TO DELIVER

The community has been at the heart of local, family-run business Robinson’s since its humble beginnings some 135 years ago. Now one of the Island’s most well-known businesses, and still part of the same family, which is now in its fifth generation, Robinson’s commitment to supporting the wider community – whether that be championing local growers and producers or its charity work, continues to this very day.

T

he local organisation, which provides a range of food and flower products and services to consumers and businesses across the Isle of Man, has worked with and supported a wide spectrum of Isle of Man-based not-forprofits and charities over the years.

12

Robinson’s; Offering a Helping Hand to the Isle of Man Community Supporting mental health in the Isle of Man community Most recently it has worked with local charity Isle Listen; an early intervention positive mental health initiative that highlights the importance of mental health via a range of mental health support services and training in the workplace, to families, and within schools across the Isle of Man. Isle Listen was selected as Robinson’s charity of the year in 2021 – an appropriate choice given the devastating impact that Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdowns had on many people’s mental health. Throughout the year, Robinson’s launched a number of initiatives in support of the charity. This included its ‘Make Someone’s Day Bouquet’ flower scheme, which raised thousands of pounds worth of funds in aid of Mental Health Awareness Month; a national awareness programme that helps raise awareness of mental health, and the problems faced by those living with mental illness. Robinson’s support for the charity also extended into its retail shops. Over £5,000 was donated to Isle Listen and

raised via the food retailer’s ‘Local Community Fund’, staff bake sales, till-point charity buckets, and Isle Listen ‘Tap to Give’ terminals located at Robinson’s Cooil Road and Prospect Terrace outlets. The ‘Local Community Fund’ comprises funds donated by Robinson’s on behalf of its customers via its Rewards Club Card, where 1% of consumer spending at its Prospect Terrace shop is automatically donated to the fund, which supports a range of local charities, projects, and community events.

Supporting those in need throughout the Covid-19 pandemic Like many other businesses, Robinson’s had to quickly adapt its business model following the outbreak of Covid-19. Flexing much of its workforce to meet the new needs of its customers, following business closures, isolation requirements, and lockdown measures, the food retailer promptly launched a number of new services for residents. This included a successful care box scheme, contactless delivery, click and collect, and a home delivery website. Robinson’s pandemic support extended beyond its customers, to the local community - support came in many shapes and forms and included working with several local organisations including Plan.com and Santander Bank to donate and deliver food care boxes to the Island’s community health care workers. In May 2020, the organisation worked

alongside the Island’s very own world champion cyclist, Mark Cavendish, to deliver 60 food boxes to random households across the Island to brighten up their Easter. Throughout Covid-19 Robinson’s worked alongside the Isle of Man Foodbank, providing food and other provisions when the charity was short due to a rise in demand for their services. The food retailer, which has worked closely with the charity for a number of years, also hosted several in-store food collection trollies for the charity.

Chosen charities for 2022

Moving into 2022, Robinson’s has partnered with local foundation Wish Upon a Dream, an independent charity that grants wishes for seriously and terminally ill children in the Isle of Man. Wishes can be diverse and range from holidays, excursions and meeting idols to equipment and toys. The retailer will also be sponsoring Wish Upon a Dream’s sister charity, Remember Me, which provides support and grants wishes for young children and families that have a sick parent, or who have lost a parent. Along with its ongoing sponsorship, Robinson’s supported Wish Upon a Dream’s Annual Charity Ball in March 2022. Meanwhile, Robinson’s is accumulating funds for the charity via its ‘Local Community Fund’ and will be setting up donation points across its retail outlets. Charitable in-store events are also planned at various points throughout the year, which are always well supported by Robinson’s customers - of which the organisation is incredibly grateful for.

LIFE & ST YLE IN THE ISLE OF MAN

Tom and Harriet Richmond found their new fourlegged companion at ManxSPCA, completing their gang of diminutive canines. Harriet had always wanted a mini-Dachshund and when they got their puppy Philip in November, they quickly realised he would enjoy having another dog around the house, “We were at training classes with Krish from the MSPCA, who mentioned that Phil might get along with Rolo, who had just recently joined them”, she told us. “We also adopted another mini-Dachshund from the UK and the three of them have formed a cute little sausage dog pack. They definitely thrive having other Dachshunds to play with”. These little fellows are full of energy and entertain the Richmonds by bouncing around wildly. “We love Dachshunds because they think they are big dogs, in tiny little bodies. Rolo has been with us for around 4 months now and he just fitted in straight away”. Here are the facts!

Tom & Harriet Richmond

Occupation: Risk & Administration Age: Both 30 Special skills: Tom can whip up a great risotto Pet hates: Dog poop left on the ground Pet loves: Chocolate Animal look-alike: Tom - lion because of the beard. Harriet - a Giraffe as I’m tall. Favorite thing about pet/s: They are always happy to see us, even if we only left the room for 2 minutes. The best thing about adopting a pet is: How rewarding it is once they settle into your home and you see their real personality and how loving they are.

Rolo & buddies Philip(below) and Skye

Name/s: The Richmond Sausages - Philip, Rolo & Skye Species: Mini Dachshunds Age/s: Phil 9 months, Rolo 4, Skye 3 Pet Loves: Destroying toys Pet hates: When we are late getting dinner Funniest things Rolo or pets do: Rolo likes to bounce around wildly when he wants to go for a walk. He also forces his head under your hand when he wants to be stroked. How does Rolo like to spend his time: Laying under blankets. Walks - Beach, plantation or park: Loves a beach where there’s open space to chase Phil & Skye.

HOME-HUNTERS. These furry friends-to-be are all waiting at the ManxSPCA for a new family to move in with. AZAZEL

A cat of luck! Azazel (or Azzy to his friends) is a beautiful 8-yearold black cat who is looking for a human of their own. He can offer you endless affection, join you in the sun and keep your lap warm at night. What more would you want? Azzy would suit a quiet, adult-only home as he can get stressed in busy environments. If you would like to give this purrfect cat a home, get in touch!

Meet the iconic duo, Charlie and Spencer, the shih-tzu brothers. Originally gifted in as a trio, these two brothers are looking for their new forever home. Mature but still full of fun, these boys are 8 years old and always ready for their next adventure. Charlie & Spencer are good with other dogs and can be suitable for re-homing with children over 16 years. They always say, two is better than 1!

SCOTTY

Is there a happier dog? Scotty is a 10-year-old Sprocker X Staffie who has been gifted in due to no fault of his own. This handsome boy doesn’t act his age, in fact he’s more like a 2-year-old! Scotty has made new friends at kennels and gets on with other dogs. He has previously lived with a cat and has been around children. Scotty, like some dogs, sufferers from slight separation anxiety so a home where he has company often would be most suitable for him. Are you a suitable family?

HONEY

In need of something sweet? Meet Honey, one of our many cats that come into our care at a mature age. Honey was previously a stray cat and would very much like to be part of someone’s family. She is 10 years old and is very affectionate, she loves attention and won’t stop purring! Honey would suit a rural, adult-only home as she isn’t quite ready for the big city yet.

BUDDY

Buddy is a 4-year-old Labrador who is full of energy and loves to play. Buddy was re-homed due to no fault of his own and is looking for a quiet home that can give him plenty of exercise. Although Buddy is friendly with dogs off lead, he would prefer a home where he can be the only pet to get all the attention. Buddy is currently on a strict diet as he, like any Labrador, is a big fan of food and came into us overweight – so plenty of play for Buddy!

2018 to 2022

Wine Down celebrates four years open in August 2022 and owners, Roy and Anne, are delighted to not only have survived the lockdowns but to have expanded.

I

n February 2020, when the neighbouring property became vacant, they approached the landlord of the two properties to see how he would feel about knocking through to expand Wine Down. He agreed and plans were put into action, only for Covid to strike a few weeks later and everything was placed on hold. They immediately launched a delivery service, and what a steep learning curve that was! New challenges included locating remote homes in the dark and sourcing delivery boxes, as the pandemic had caused a shortage of cardboard boxes available to purchase. Front of house staff became expert box makers, able to construct a box out of any piece of available cardboard. Even now, it’s difficult to look at a box without assessing it for the number of souffles, Scotch eggs and beef Wellingtons it can hold!

2018 Expansion plans into number 26 continued and the new premises opened in June 2020 with a larger retail space and a couple of extra tables. The delivery service continued and, in January 2021, it was easy to switch straight back to delivering when the two lockdowns happened. Customers were amazing, returning boxes to help out and supporting in any way they could. Since the return to ‘normality’ in April 2021, the vans are still seen out and about each week delivering great quality food and wine around the Island.

“Front of house staff became expert box makers, able to construct a box out of any piece of available cardboard. Even now, it’s difficult to look at a box without assessing it for the number of souffles, Scotch eggs and beef Wellingtons it can hold!” The latest addition is the outside area, finally completed in August 2021 with the installation of the awnings, enabling customers to enjoy continental style dining, relaxing outdoors with blankets and heaters (if necessary!).

Isle of Man artists selected to contribute to the collection of artworks on the new Manxman The isle of man steam packet company, in collaboration with smc art consultancy, has commissioned an exciting series of artworks for its new state-of-the-art vessel, manxman.

A

s work continues to ready Manxman for service next year, around the Island, 15 selected artists are drawing, painting, and sculpting bespoke pieces, which will celebrate the Isle of Man’s vibrant creative output, heritage, landscape, and community, and tell the story of our Island to all who travel on the vessel. Managing Director of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, Brian Thomson, said: ‘The Steam Packet Company are committed to supporting the creative arts on the Island and look forward to showcasing the artistic talent of the Isle of Man where it can be viewed by travellers from near and far.’

Ellie Baker’s dreamy, semi-abstract landscapes are sure to soothe the soul as you ride the waves.

‘Although we initially planned to select 10 local artists to contribute to the collection, the quality of the proposals submitted was so high we’ve extended this to 15 artists, who we’re delighted to introduce.’ Working in a variety of media types, and taking inspiration from all aspects of the Island’s heritage, culture, and natural beauty, the 15 Isle of Man artists selected to contribute to the collection of artwork on Manxman are:

Originally a Scientific Illustrator, Sally Black expresses her love for the natural world through her oil paintings.

Amy Bourbon has always been inspired by the sea, and for this project, will bring to life the heritage of the Island’s landmarks through the medium of oil paint.

Easily recognised for his striking, graphic style, iIllustrator, Adam Berry, will be using digital media for his piece on Manxman.

Known for her bold, clear lines, and poppy colours, Jade Boylan primarily works in digital art under the brand ‘Candy Doll Club’. LIFE & ST YLE IN THE ISLE OF MAN

Known for his mastery of printmaking, digital art and now music, Bruno Cavellec will be returning to his beloved oil paints for this commission.

Working in oil paints for this commission, Anna Clucas will be using sound to colour synaesthesia to express her response to pieces of local music.

Megan Hindley, also known as Steadhead Art, will be drawing on the Island’s rich folklore and mythology for this commission.

Inspired by interesting characters, colour, and nature, Jacqui Mulvagh works in a variety of 2D media and will exploring digital painting for this project.

Sculptor, Darren Jackson, works in wood, metal, ice and sand! He’s enjoying finding sculptural potential in the scrap tools and machinery he’ll use for the sculpture destined for Manxman.

Graham Rider works in oils and has been enjoying experimenting with collage and acrylic to build interesting surface textures for this commission. W W W.G A L L E R Y.C O.I M

Castletown artist, Andrew Mackellar, uses pen, ink and wash to create his distinctive abstracts and landscapes.

Colby-based photographer Ron Strathdee, brilliantly captures the beauty of our natural landscape. Ceramicist, Stephanie Quayle, will be drawing from the Island’s ancient past to inspire the bronze-cast sculpture she has designed for Manxman. @GALLERYIOM

The Hawthorn Sings

in Smeale Words Suzy Holland Illustration: Carola Colley

I wouldn’t mind betting half the Island has never been to Smeale. There’s no church, no pub, no shop and although there is a beach even the hardiest swimmers talk about the rip tide. But what Smeale does have is abundant farming land in what is colloquially known as the golden triangle, experiencing the best weather on the Island.

A

nd deep in Smeale is Smeale Farm, owned and run for generations by the Martin family. Beth, who grew up on a dairy farm, and studied agriculture at Bangor University, swore she’d never marry a farmer. How wrong she was! Steve Martin and his brother Chris manage Smeale Farm as sustainably as possible, and with wildlife conservation in mind. And it is this which has inspired Beth to write the stories and vignettes which make

38

up her book ‘Song of the Hawthorn’. In the early days of the pandemic, when farming continued but their holiday cottages were closed to visitors, Beth began to write down the short stories which, she says, had been wafting around her head partially formed, “like a teasing perfume I couldn’t pin down”. “Covid meant our lives were quieter, and we felt more isolated, but the natural world doesn’t work like that!” says Beth. “The hawthorn continues to sing, the hens continue to lay, worms turn the earth and so on and so forth. And so it was with my writing: once I’d started, I couldn’t stop and two years later, with the help and support of family, friends and the Island’s creative writing community ‘Song of the Hawthorn’ was published.”

LIFE & ST YLE IN THE ISLE OF MAN

CU LT U RE

The book begins with a nod to Manx folklore and the magical properties of the hawthorn tree. But just as you think ‘Song of the Hawthorn’ might be just a little bit twee, Beth interjects with wry humour: “Listen carefully and you may hear a tiny vibration, a harmonious tree tune … or your tinnitus is playing up.” Most of the stories are written in the third person (or more precisely, third sheepdog, hedgehog or spider) but others draw on Beth’s own day-to-day life on the farm – collecting eggs, avoiding the ‘summer-drunk’ bees in the grass. Beth’s stories are illustrated by an artist well-known not just on the Island but further afield – Carola Colley. Now living in Portugal, Carola knows Smeale inside out, with happy childhood memories of visiting her grandparents there, and later living just around the corner from Smeale Farm, practicing her own art and running classes for children and adults (including, at one time, Beth), and she even remembers feeding the Martin family lambs as a child. The Manx landscape, myth, folklore and histories have always provided inspiration for her work, and it is this which informed her illustrations for ‘Song of the Hawthorn’. “I was delighted when Beth approached me as her stories took me straight back to my Smeale life,” Carola – who also edited the book - says. “I know the shape of Smeale, the hills, the fields, the flora and fauna and once I’d discussed my preliminary drawings with Beth, the finished illustrations actually came together very fast.”

I won’t ruin the humour of Beth’s book by repeating passages here (although I particularly liked the hedgehog avoiding certain mushrooms because they ‘blew her mind’) but if like me you avoid all ‘animals as humans’ books, don’t worry! - ‘Song of the Hawthorn’ touches gently and intriguingly on the lives which are lived alongside ours. Beth’s writing is so beautiful I found myself reading some passages out loud just to hear how they sounded – surely an audio version is in the offing? – and I’d love to see an exhibition of Carola’s illustrations in one place because my copy of ‘Song of the Hawthorn’ is already dog-eared by flicking back and forth to remind myself of the smallest details. Come on Isle of Man, is that too much to ask? If you’d like your own copy of ‘Song of the Hawthorn’ – and I really recommend it as both a stunningly written collection of stories (suitable for all ages) and a reminder that there is a natural world existing and thriving alongside our own – then it costs just £10 from Manx National Heritage sites (including the Museum), Bridge Bookshops in Ramsey and Port Erin, Andreas Stores, Mother Ts in Laxey, the Manx Wildlife shop in Peel, Farmers Combine in Ramsey and also at Georgie Revill’s Cook Shack in Bride.

www.carolacolley.com www.songofthehawthorn.com www.manxfarmhols.com

The illustrations, like the stories, can be viewed and read individually, but there is a coherence to them. “I wanted there to be a motif, a theme, to them, without detracting from Beth’s stories, without slavishly following her words,” continues Carola, “but those words were my inspiration, and I’d like to think each of my drawings echoes them.”

Attracting new audiences to reading

Well read.

Why eBooks and eAudiobooks are on the rise, and how you can access digital titles locally in the Isle of Man Following the pandemic and the closure of schools, high streets, and libraries, digital book sales soared, as the public turned to reading to escape pandemic cabin fever.

M

ore notably, the audiobook market has seen a significant increase in readership numbers, especially across the younger demographics. The audiobook’s surge in popularity can be attributed to several factors – firstly it enables the time-poor to stay in touch with reading, while bridging a gap for those where reading and literacy is a challenge. Lastly for many, audiobooks have acted as a reassurance and form of escape– to be read to is a comfort and affords a human connection at a time where a lot of people have felt isolated. The enduring nature of books and reading will always remain; however, it appears that readers – both old and new, are now embracing books in all their forms.

The launch of the new digital audiobook service on Island looks to inspire and attract new audiences of all ages and abilities to reading, while enabling those that already read, to have the opportunity to access the latest titles, as well as many classics, in an affordable and easy way. The apps, which are user-friendly, with an easy check-out and check-in procedure and can be accessed 24/7. The digital platforms also allow members to borrow up to six titles at any one time, for a period of 21 days, with eAudiobooks and eBooks automatically returned to the digital collection at the end of the loan period. The two apps combined hold thousands of titles, which the library is keen to expand as the service attracts greater numbers.

How to join in

Existing HBN Library members can access the Libby and BorrowBox apps using their library card number and PIN at www. douglaslibrary.im/ebooks/. For those looking to become a member of the library, you can register for free at www.douglaslibrary.im/ join/ or in person at the library’s premises, which is located on Duke Street in central Douglas.

How can I access eBooks and eAudiobooks locally in the Isle of Man?

Henry Bloom Noble (HBN) Library, based in central Douglas, was the first public library in the Isle of Man to launch an eBook and audiobook service back in 2011. The service has evolved considerably, and is now available to the Manx public, via an app called ‘Libby’, which holds a wide range of digital publications including eBooks, magazines, and newspapers from around the world. Libby, which is available to library members (of which membership is free to Isle of Man residents) is available to download from App Stores. The ’virtual library’ offers locals a wider choice of titles, which can be accessed at a click of a button via the smartphone app. To complement the Libby app, Douglas Borough Council and HBN Library launched a brand new eAudiobook app in May,

LEARN SOMETHING NEW, HAVE FUN AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS WITH A LEISURE COURSE AT UCM Have some spare time on your hands? University College Isle of Man (UCM) has launched its new programme of Leisure Courses for the next academic year, starting this September, perfect for those wishing to learn something different, have fun and make new friends!

D

elivered by a team of friendly and extensively experienced tutors, there are more than 200 engaging and exciting courses to choose from in business and technology, creative arts, health and wellbeing, languages and general interest. Did you know that the island is home to some stunning UNESCO Biosphere dark sky locations? Meaning our skies are some of the clearest in the British Isles! But have you ever wondered what you’re actually looking at during those beautiful starry skies? Here is what one student had to say:

42

“The Astronomy and Manx Night Sky course was truly fascinating! I never actually knew what the various constellations meant, or that the northern lights can be visible from the islands’ coasts. I now genuinely enjoy grabbing a friend, a flask, and taking it to Niarbyl bay to stargaze on a clear evening. I would 100% recommend this course.” – Astronomy student. UCM’s leisure courses also run at locations across the island, during afternoons, evenings and weekends, making them easily accessible to anyone across the island. If you aren’t necessarily looking to learn something new, but just want to switch off, have a chat and enjoy yourself, there are plenty of creative courses to choose from. This is what one returning student had to say: “I have completed both cake decorating courses with Emma, and she’s so patient and friendly, she’s brilliant! I signed up with a couple of friends, and I’m leaving with even more like-minded ones.” – Cake Decorating student.

‘People get involved in our leisure courses for a wide variety of reasons, but the courses are designed to help people learn new skills and hobbies, brush up existing talent, make new friends and have fun. If you’ve never tried one of our leisure courses, this is a great time to try something a bit different.’ As well as the popular courses that have been a feature of the programme for many years, UCM has added 48 new courses this year including: ACTING AND VOICE FOR ALL: Develop imagination, confidence and a sense of well-being, laughter guaranteed and no experience necessary. The course will be taught by Ms L Becket who has taught acting at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama and Arts Ed in London. AN INTRODUCTION TO CANDLE MAKING: Students will learn about using moulds or container candles and dipping candles, and can use either soy or beeswax. MACRAMÉ FOR BEGINNERS: Macramé is the art of knotting rope, string or any type of yarn to make beautiful items from hanging basket to hanging chairs, shelves and more! WOODWORK FOR IMPROVERS: Gain skills, confidence, and advice that you can take forward to plan and build successful home projects. SCIENCE OF COOKING: Learn about the how’s and the why’s of traditional and modernist cooking techniques; using basic principles in chemistry and physics to bring your cooking skills to the next level and expand your kitchen knowledge THE CREATIVE VEGAN: One-day course packed with essential tips and an opportunity to try unfamiliar ingredients. Discover new and fresh ways to cook delicious seasonal produce with essential tips for nutrition.

RULERS & LOVERS – WOMEN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD: Most people know about famous male rulers, but what about the powerful women? Would the history of the ancient world have been the same without Cleopatra? Would the Russian Empire have expanded under Peter III as it did under Catherine II? WIND, WATER & ICE – THE SHAPING OF THE MANX LANDSCAPE: An exciting journey of discovery bringing alive the natural processes which have been instrumental in forming what we see today within our beautiful landscape. MANX LAW: Two workshops providing a basic introduction to Manx Law covering areas that people may encounter in their everyday life. MICROSOFT EXCEL CHARTS AND GRAPHS: This course is aimed at those who have a basic knowledge of Excel but would like to learn more about charts, graphs and presenting data in an efficient way. Suddenly At Home

44

LIFE & ST YLE IN THE ISLE OF MAN

CU LT U RE

Suddenly, At Home is an audio collage that presents a rarely examined kind of Manxness, one that finds hilarity, love, loss and yearning in ordinariness. Written by talented filmmaker John Craine, it’s a beautifully crafted radio play about the Isle of Man, told through a partly magical realist style, taking Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood as inspiration.

T

he play engages with the oral tradition of storytelling that is often forgotten in a busy world where moving images are the primary medium. Inspired by the characters and stories that would be gossiped about by an older generation of eccentrics who don’t quite fit in to the contemporary world, Suddenly, At Home is also a story of place that rejects the usual cliches of Manx identity but strives to tell a story of a community that captures what it is to be Manx. Suddenly, At Home is in equal parts funny and sad, flitting between vignettes of a policeman attending to the business of the day, two grieving sisters selling their mother’s house, an 18th Century ghost, neighbours who are nosy and neighbours who hear too much of one another.

“I was keen to incorporate jokes and word play that will specifically appeal to Manx people. There’s a pleasure in being in on a joke, to speak a secret language of cultural memory”

enjoyed the challenge of non-visual storytelling. “When John invited me to direct, I hesitated because I wasn’t sure what I could bring to a radio play, but I really enjoyed the process. Focusing on how we can use just the spoken word and silences to convey the range of emotions explored in the script has been so interesting and a lot easier than I imagined - mainly because John’s writing is so wonderfully evocative that it did most of the work for me.” Sonya brought on collaborators from previous projects, amongst them editor Edward Crompton (Isle of Dogs, Ron’s Gone Wrong) and actor James Northcote (The Imitation Game, Wuthering Heights, The Last Kingdom). She was delighted to work with local legend Dot Tilbury MBE, as well up and coming composer Ellie Quayle and talented members of local theatre group MYCP. “Because we were interested in capturing a recording of how the Manx accent sounds today, it was really important to us to use local actors and it’s been so rewarding. Our Narrator, James Northcote, uses a slightly heightened British accent to evoke the timelessness of a bygone era of radio, which creates the perfect backdrop for the surprisingly diverse range of really lovely Isle of Man voices.” Suddenly, at Home deals with some fairly heavy subject matter but it’s never maudlin and a joke is never far away. “I was keen to incorporate jokes and word play that will specifically appeal to Manx people. There’s a pleasure in being in on a joke, to speak a secret language of cultural memory” says John. “Sometimes it feels like we’re being on our best behaviour when we talk about what it means to be Manx” says John Craine. “It’s good to have an aspirational vision of how we choose to present ourselves, but I’m more interested in what we do in the privacy of our homes, or even in the privacy of our own heads. Having a narrator allows us access to our characters which is difficult to achieve outside prose writing” The play is directed by Sonya Quayle, whose previous work is in film and theatre. She

AGENDA

Tanzy Cherry The next chapter in the success story of a leading financial services company has been officially written. Further strengthening the strong family ethos at Cherry Godfrey, Chief Operating Officer Tanzy Cherry - daughter of founder and CEO David Cherry - has made a significant investment in the firm by purchasing a substantial shareholding.

T

he family-run business was founded in March 1993 in Guernsey and has since evolved into a fully rounded financial services provider. David said: ‘I am delighted that Tanzy has decided to buy shares in Cherry Godfrey, this brings the entire Group ownership back into our family for the first time in 17 years. ‘Succession planning is the key to ensuring the future growth and success of a company. Ensuring Cherry Godfrey’s next generation of leadership has the right skills and experience to take up the reigns is paramount. This is a true mark of Tanzy’s commitment and confidence in Cherry Godfrey and its role within the Islands’. Cherry Godfrey was actually formed by husband-andwife David and Selena Cherry as a Finance Brokerage in 1993 on the day Tanzy was born. The Jersey branch

was opened in 2000 and, once established as one of the premier financial services companies in the Channel Islands, expanded to the Isle of Man in 2016 and the Isle of Wight last year. Twenty-nine years on and Tanzy is one of the key figures shaping the vision and success of Cherry Godfrey which has enjoyed continuous growth and now has bases in Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man and – since last autumn – the Isle of Wight. However, despite expansion in the Isle of Man, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands, the company’s dedication to customer service and the ‘personal’ touch remains the foundation. ‘I am extremely proud to have bought shares in the company that has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As Cherry Godfrey looks to the future, the focus is very much on continuing to provide competitive and valued islands’ products and serving the local communities,’ Tanzy explained. ‘Client service and relationships are key to everything we do, in striving to meet both individual and business needs. Our customers are very much people we know by name and who will know us by name too and we look forward to helping them meet their aspirations today and into the future.’ The strategic growth plan has seen the development of a number of consumer finance and insurance products, not just off-the-shelf offerings but well-researched, flexible and tailored packages with quality customer service and valuefor-money always at the forefront. Tanzy added: ‘Working at the heart of local communities has always been at the forefront of what we do and we are looking at a number of exciting initiatives to increase our product offering and service levels across the four jurisdictions. ‘Our relationship with our customers is integral to our business. Indeed, we work with people and businesses that we trust and endorse and, with an exciting pipeline of opportunities, are looking forward to the future with optimism.’

IOD ISLE OF MAN SUCCESS HIGHLIGHTED AT ANNUAL MEMBERS’ MEETING The Claremont Hotel 18 May 2022

Isle of Man Members of the Institute of Directors were able to reflect on a positive year and to look ahead with enthusiasm during the Institute’s recent Annual Members’ Meeting. Chair of IoD Isle of Man Jennifer Houghton thanked branch sponsor Ravenscroft, and welcomed distinguished guests, His Excellency, Sir John Lorimer Lieutenant General, and Dr Alex Allinson, Treasury Minister, who addressed the audience with a very upbeat overview of the Island’s economic prospects.

D

espite acknowledging that the covid pandemic had changed both the landscape of the economy and the Island’s finances in the short term, the Treasury Minister stressed that there were plenty of grounds for optimism as the Island’s economy started to leave the recovery phase following the pandemic. Esther Teeken COO, IoD UK, and Jayne Miller, the new International Commercial Relationship Manager for IOD UK were also in attendance with Esther providing guests with some brief insights from IoD UK into future plans. With the TT approaching at the time of the meeting, the Minister alluded to Visit Isle of Man’s ten-year strategy for tourism which had been approved by Tynwald the day before the event. He stressed that improving the Island as a destination for others to travel to also supports hugely the work promoting the Isle of Man as the natural choice to live and work in. Jennifer Houghton provided Members with a very thorough review of IoD’s activities over 2021. The key successes highlighted were that membership had increased to 280, a large % increase year on year. This was attributed to a large degree to the return to the island of the Institute of Directors’ Professional Membership Certificate in Company Direction programme, as well as the growth in popularity of Associate Membership.

W W W.G A L L E R Y.C O.I M

A diverse and interesting programme of events had been very well-attended throughout the year and there has been more proactive promotion of student and associate membership, helped along with the introduction of targeted new events. Wherever possible IoD Isle of Man aims to deliver these events on a ‘free to members basis’ as part of its drive to uphold value for members. Jennifer also highlighted the work that IoD Isle of Man had done in supporting the measurement of business and economic confidence. In 2020, it had been invited to work in partnership with KPMG on a quarterly Pulse Survey, designed to explore key topical business issues relating to the Isle of Man. This support continued into 2021 and 2022. A highlight of 2021 had been the Director of the Year Awards hosted at Woodbourne House in November. Support for IoD Isle of Man from the business community had been strong and Jennifer was delighted to confirm that Lloyds Bank had agreed to be headline sponsors at the Director of the Year Awards 2022. As Minister Allinson had done, Jennifer ended her report with a positive message to Members. “We are an institution run by Directors, for Directors. Let us all look forward to another eventful year of building on our three pillars of connecting, developing and influencing to help create an even stronger business community of talented leaders.”

Words Martin Malone Simply Nutrition: Personal Trainer/Sports Nutritionist

The summer is finally here, and we’ve already seen high-temperatures drifting north, so with some luck, we will have a beautiful hot summer on the Isle of Man but with sun comes heat, so what an opportune time to discuss hydration or more specifically, the effects of dehydration on the body.

L

et’s face it, we all know the importance of staying hydrated, but do we pay enough attention to the importance of adequate hydration for general health and for athletic performance? Probably not. We will all get dehydrated at some point due to exercise or the environment we are exposed to, but chronic dehydration is very common and not just in the fitness community. We simply don’t drink enough. Dehydration occurs when your body loses or expels more fluid than you take in and therefore doesn’t have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions”. Sometimes it’s easy to spot - “I need a drink, I’m dehydrated” but quite often we are dehydrated and don’t know it. A red light doesn’t suddenly flash when it’s time to drink, so we don’t always know if we are dehydrated.

64

Why is hydration important for general health? We regulate our own body temperature by perspiring (sweating). As water evaporates off our skin, it cools the body down to maintain a stable core body temperature of between 36.1°C and 37.2°C. Even a small level of dehydration can have negative consequences. It can cause, headaches, tiredness, lack of concentration, brain fog, dry mouth, digestive problems, constipation and in the worst-case scenario it can contribute to more serious conditions such as kidney stones. It can cause damage and premature aging of the skin as dehydrated skin is less protected during sun exposure. The body is approximately 60% water and more specifically, muscles, kidneys and liver are 80% water, the brain and heart 73%, the skin 64% and bone is approx. 31%. We are essentially made of water! When we lose water through sweat and respiration (breathing), it must be replaced adequately or the body will be constantly dehydrated leading to the problems mentioned above. How much fluid do you need? A typical male adult on average should consume approx.

LIFE & ST YLE IN THE ISLE OF MAN

A CT IV E

3 litres of fluid (from water and other drinks) per day and a woman approx. 2.4 litres. This can vary depending on body weight, the level of physical activity and climate, so it is just a general guideline. The general rule of thumb is get hydrated and stay hydrated throughout the day, especially during and after exercise. Alcohol and other drinks such as coffee can have a mild dehydrating effect but if your other fluid intake is sufficient, this shouldn’t be a problem. Dehydration – the negative effects on athletic and cognitive performance The effects of dehydration on athletic and cognitive performance have been well studied. Core body temperature is regulated by the hypothalamus. Sweating is the body’s mechanism to maintain your core body temperature. The body is constantly losing fluid so this must be replenished to maintain this homeostasis. During exercise fluid loss speeds up to a lesser or greater extent depending on the conditions of exercise as mentioned above, so adequate hydration during exercise maintains normal muscle function and reduces the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stress, which can be very serious if not addressed quickly. In the worst cases scenario, seizures or even death can occur. Despite these risks, athletes do not always properly consider the effects of dehydration on athletic performance, especially when exercising in hot conditions. Numerous studies have shown that even a 2% reduction in body weight due to dehydration causes a noticeable decrease in physical and cognitive performance.

W W W.G A L L E R Y.C O.I M

Remember, the brain is 73% water and to function properly it must be hydrated.

A weight loss of 5% or more of body weight can reduce athletic performance by as much as 20% to 30%.

Looking more specifically at cognitive function, researchers found that athletes who lost fluid equal to 2% of their body weight had a noticeable impairment to their cognition, reaction times and decision making. Remember, the brain is 73% water and to function properly it must be hydrated. For athletes involved in skill sports, dehydration can reduce their performance significantly by impairing their ability to make quick and rational decisions. Another important consideration for Mum’s and Dad’s is dehydration can have an impact on a child’s ability to concentrate in school and retain information. It’s important to try and monitor your kids’ hydration by reminding them to drink. Summary To maintain homeostasis in the body and therefore health, peak athletic and cognitive performance, hydration should be maintained and aligned with the body’s fluid needs throughout the day. You don’t need to carry a 2-liter bottle of water around with you, but you do need to drink regularly and when in a hot environment or exercising, drink a little more and don’t ignore thirst signals. We are in a constant state of flux as fluid enters and leaves the body throughout the day, so remember - Get Hydrated and Stay Hydrated.

10from the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games medallists

The Isle of Man has taken part in the Commonwealth Games since its debut in 1958. This year, the Island will be sending a 32 strong squad to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham – amongst the 32 athletes are RL360 sponsored track cyclist Matt Bostock and long distance runner Ollie Lockley. The Games in Birmingham will take place between 28 July and 8 August and will mark the 16th time that Team IOM has competed. The current tally for the number of medals won by the Isle of Man stands at an impressive 12 medals in 15 Commonwealth Games. In honour of this, we look back at some of the Island’s proudest moments from previous Games. 1. Stuart Slack (cyclist) – Bronze medallist - 1958 Games in Wales The Commonwealth Games in Cardiff was a landmark moment for Isle of Man sport as it was the first time that the Island entered a team into the competition. Of the 10 competitors that formed Team IOM, it was Stuart Slack who made history by becoming the first Manx athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal. Storming through heavy rain and strong winds (typical Manx weather), Slack persevered and finished with a respectable third place in the Men’s Cycling Road Race. As well as being a talented cyclist, Stuart was also a songwriter who had composed many songs about the Isle of Man. 2. Peter Buckley (cyclist) – Gold medallist - 1966 Games in Jamaica Despite leaving the Island when he was a young child, Peter Buckley did not pass up the opportunity to represent the Isle of Man at the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica. Even cycling through sweltering heat over a 120mile course and crashing in the early stages of the Men’s Road Race weren’t enough to stop Peter from winning his - and the Island’s - first gold medal. His race time of 5 hours and 7 seconds was also a then Commonwealth Games record. He was a legend in the making but only a few years later his life was tragically cut short following an unfortunate training accident in July 1969.

66

3. Alexandra E. Jackson (swimmer) – Bronze medallist - 1970 Games in Scotland By 1970, the Island had formed a reputation for producing high-calibre cyclists and it was the right time to showcase local talent in other sporting professions. The 1970 Games in Edinburgh was the first time that the Island had chosen to compete in the women’s aquatic events. Alexandra E. Jackson was the only Manx female swimmer at the event and completed the 100m and 200m freestyle swims. Having just missed out on a top 3 finish in the 100m race, she pulled off a stellar performance to win bronze in the 200m race and became the first female Commonwealth Games medallist to hail from the Isle of Man. 4. Stewart Watterson (shooter) – Bronze medallist - 1978 Games in Canada For only the second time ever, the Isle of Man entered a team for the shooting events in the Games in Edmonton not long after it was incorporated into the programme as an optional sport. Manx and former champion rifle shooter, Stewart Watterson, took part in the 50m Rifle Prone against 32 other shooters and finished third overall with a total of 1187 points out of a possible 1200. He also went on to represent the Isle of Man in 3 other Commonwealth Games but couldn’t best his performance in 1978.

LIFE & ST YLE IN THE ISLE OF MAN

5. Nigel Kelly (shooter) – Gold medallist - 1986 Games in Scotland 20 years had passed since Team IOM’s first gold medal in 1966 and many were beginning to wonder if another would follow. The moment came when Nigel Kelly fired on all cylinders during the Men’s Skeet event hitting a near-perfect score of 117 out of 125 clays - to finish first overall. Cycling was not the only sport the Island was becoming wellknown for, with many local shooters going on to achieve Commonwealth success further down the line including double medallist Tim Kneale (who went on to be sponsored by RL360). Like Stewart Watterson, Nigel appeared in 3 other Commonwealth Games. 6. Mark Cavendish (cyclist) – Gold medallist 2006 Games in Melbourne Success was always on the cards for Mark Cavendish (aka the ‘Manx Missile’) who is also arguably the Isle of Man’s greatest ever athlete. In the year prior to the Games in Melbourne, Cavendish had just completed his first season as a professional cyclist with 11 wins. He was pushed to his limits during the Men’s 20km Scratch race and it wasn’t until the final lap that he managed to break away from strong competition to end another 20 year wait and win the Island’s third gold medal. He’ll no doubt be looking to rack up some more wins for the Island at this year’s event in Birmingham and remains one to watch. 7. David Walton and Trevor Boyles (shooters) – Bronze medallists - 2006 Games in Australia The 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne proved to be the most successful competition for Team IOM when they won not one, but two medals. Spirits were high even before Mark Cavendish put in a gold medal performance because Team IOM had earlier claimed yet another Commonwealth medal. They owed this medal to the Olympic trap pair David Walton and Trevor Boyles who had already set the standard on the second day of the event in the Men’s Trap event. With a final combined scored of 183 out of 200 and earning a third place finish, Walton and Boyles are the only pair to both hail from the Isle of Man to win a Commonwealth medal to this day.

W W W.G A L L E R Y.C O.I M

8. Peter Kennaugh (cyclist) – Silver medallist 2014 Games in Glasgow The Commonwealth team in 2014 is the largest Island squad to have headed for the Games - with a total of 46 Manx athletes competing in Glasgow. Amongst them was Peter Kennaugh who, having previously won Olympic Gold in 2012 and who formed part of the Tour De France winning Team Sky, ended up being the only medallist for Isle of Man in that year’s Games. In a close race, Peter narrowly missed out on first place in the Men’s 40km track race and was only 14 points behind the winner, Thomas Scully. Although slightly disheartened, he said he was proud to win for the Island and received a well-deserved hero’s welcome home. 9. Mark Christian (cyclist) – Bronze medallist 2010 Games in Delhi Being selected for the Commonwealth Games is a great achievement in itself, but to win a medal on your debut is an even higher honour. The Games in Delhi was a special occasion for track cyclist Mark Christian who cycled in 4 different races. He won bronze in the 40km race at the velodrome and secured a top 10 finish in the 4000m Individual Pursuit. This year’s competition in Birmingham will be Mark’s third appearance for the Isle of Man and he could be one of the Island’s strongest competitors. 10. Tim Kneale (shooter) – Silver medallist 2018 Games in the Gold Coast After winning a bronze medal in 2010 Games in Delhi, RL360-sponsored double trap shooter Tim Kneale was determined to step up his game for the competition in Australia. In the same event, Men’s Double Trap, Tim scored 70 points out of 80 to earn himself a silver medal and thus beating his previous win. This made him the only Manx athlete to have collected medals at 2 different Commonwealth Games.

for not only a mean look but a low drag coefficient and with that super-low roofline and both a stance and wheel arch gaps that look too perfect to be factory, not to mention those minuscule ‘virtual’ mirrors (camera-based, if you were wondering), whoever penned this one is an absolute artist. The artistry doesn’t stop at the exterior design, either, because Audi claim a range of a staggering 700km. Seven hundred kilometres. ‘Oh, but who’s going to wait around to charge that at a service station?’ the naysayers will cry. Well I’m not sure about you, but after driving seven hundred kilometres I’m generally up for a little leg stretch, definitely up for a loo break and almost certainly on for a cuppa or some disappointing motorway service station food - if in France - or a surprisingly decent motorway service station meal in Germany and almost anywhere else in Europe. Just not in France, which is a shame as it’s a nation that prides itself on its fine cuisine. Anyway, I digress... While you’re taking that leg stretch / loo break / cup of coffee or meal of varying quality, if you’ve plugged into a charger that’ll channel coulombs at the A6 Avant e-tron’s maximum charging speed of 270kW you’ll have an extra 300km of range in the 100kWh batteries in just 10 minutes, which makes me wonder - isn’t that comparable to most ICE vehicles in any case, when you’re comparing range gained with time spent at the services? The Avant is built on the same platform and technology as the A6 Sportback e-tron that was recently announced and

Designed with efficiency at the forefront of everyone involved’s collective minds and refined in a wind-tunnel, its slippery shape is testament to their efforts. Gigantic ducts at the front channel cold air inside to cool the brakes, batteries and motors and at the rear, the spoiler has been shaped to reduce turbulence and therefore drag, with air outlets within the mean-looking rear diffusers where the no-longer required tailpipes would’ve previously been on proudly on display on an ICE vehicle. These reduce drag underneath the car as well as minimising lift - so you’ll be

“WELL I’M NOT SURE ABOUT YOU, BUT AFTER DRIVING SEVEN HUNDRED KILOMETRES I’M GENERALLY UP FOR A LITTLE LEG STRETCH, DEFINITELY UP FOR A LOO BREAK AND ALMOST CERTAINLY ON FOR A CUPPA OR SOME DISAPPOINTING MOTORWAY SERVICE STATION FOOD ” fits fi rmly in to th e lu xury se ctor, so th ink of it as a mo re affordable, less ostentatious but still achingly cool Porsche Taycan. With the power of a C5 RS6 Plus but 25% more torque. Let that sink in. Yes, yes, it doesn’t sound anywhere near as good as the original RS6, but an electric übercruiser with just shy of 500bhp, a whiplash-inducing 800Nm of torque and a 700km range isn’t to be sniffed at one bit. Oh, although I forgot to mention - full disclosure here - Audi claim that this range is ‘subject to driveline options’ so I suspect that might apply solely to the single motor variant, rather than the twin-motor.

able to enjoy the fast lane of Germany’s derestricted autobahns to their fullest. Keep in mind that this would have a fair impact on your available range though, of course. Rumour has it that they could be released as soon as 2023. The future is never too far away.

If you opt for the twin motor option though, this behemoth will slip through the air to 100kmh in less than four seconds, which for a car just shy of five metres long and two metres wide that weighs, well, they haven’t confirmed a weight yet. But given it packs a serious punch in the battery department it probably isn’t going to be a featherweight.

Bringing epic to your everyday This latest Galaxy offering from Samsung packs a powerful punch that will take it straight to the top of the class for Android users.

ith three models – the S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra – to choose from, Samsung has further developed the innovations of its S21 range, and tweaked the Galaxy’s look with a sleek minimalist design. It’s the photographic capabilities that really make this phone stand out though. The S22 and S22+ both have an upgraded 50 MP main camera, 12MP ultra wide camera and 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom plus a 10MP selfie camera. The S22 Ultra, meanwhile, has an amazing 108 MP front camera and a 20MP front camera for capturing every detail. The S22 has garnered much praise for its portrait mode and particularly for its “nightography” performance that produces fantastic low light colour and clarity, both in photo and video mode.

Super stable Super HDR makes for blur-free moving pictures and there’s also a handy “remove” feature that allows you to eradicate any unwanted objects or photobombing in your photos. Along with the fastest chip ever used in a Galaxy model, the S22 boasts an extremely bright display for excellent outdoor visibility and intelligent battery modes to keep the power going. The Ultra model also comes with a builtin S Pen allowing you to write or sketch directly on the screen. Available in a range of colours including Phantom White, Green, Pink Gold (or Burgundy for the Ultra model) and Phantom Black, the S22 has the looks as well as the tools to satisfy a demanding smartphone user. Gorilla Glass casing has been introduced for these models to improve durability without detracting from design and the combination of style and functionality makes this a standout option in the marketplace. You could be powering up with a Samsung Galaxy S22 from Manx Telecom right now, with packages available from just £37 per month over 24 months.
