Alberto Giacometti
Master of Modernist Sculpture
Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) was a Swiss sculptor, painter, draughtsman, and printmaker whose unique vision and exceptional skill have left an indelible mark on the world of modern art. Best known for his elongated, skeletal sculptures, Giacometti’s work explores the human condition, existential angst, and the essence of being, making him a pivotal figure in 20th-century art.
Early Life and Influences
Born in the small village of Borgonovo in Switzerland, Giacometti was the son of Giovanni Giacometti, a well-known PostImpressionist painter. This artistic environment deeply influenced Alberto, who began drawing and sculpting at a young age. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the École des Arts Industriels in Geneva before moving to Paris in 1922, where he would immerse himself in the vibrant artistic community.
In Paris, Giacometti attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, studying under the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. During this period, he was exposed to and influenced by various artistic movements, including Cubism and Surrealism. He became associated with the Surrealists in the late 1920s and early 1930s, producing dreamlike, fantastical works that broke conventional norms.
The Shift to Existentialism
The 1930s marked a significant shift in Giacometti’s work. Moving away from Surrealism, he began to focus on more figurative representations, striving to capture the essence of human presence. This period coincided with his philosophical explorations, particularly his engagement with existentialism. Influenced by the likes of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Giacometti sought to represent the complexity of human existence and perception.
His signature style emerged during the 1940s and 1950s: elongated figures that appeared fragile yet resilient, often depicted in solitary, contemplative poses. These sculptures, with their rough, textured surfaces, convey a sense of existential isolation and vulnerability. Works like "Walking Man" and "Standing Woman" epitomize this period, capturing the delicate balance between presence and absence.
Artistic Legacy
Giacometti’s approach to sculpture was meticulous and introspective. He often worked with live models, tirelessly attempting to translate his perception of them into his art. This intense focus on the human form and the existential themes embedded in his work resonated with contemporary audiences and critics alike.
Beyond sculpture, Giacometti was also an accomplished painter and draughtsman. His paintings, often overshadowed by his sculptures, feature similarly attenuated figures and exhibit his continuous exploration of space and form. His portraits, characterized by their raw, almost skeletal appearance, convey a deep psychological depth.
Giacometti’s influence extended beyond the realm of visual arts. His friendship with leading intellectuals and writers of his time, including Sartre, further cemented his position within the existentialist movement. Sartre’s essay "The Search for the Absolute" reflects on Giacometti’s artistic quest and philosophical inquiries, highlighting the interconnectedness of their ideas.
Recognition and Impact
During his lifetime, Giacometti received numerous accolades and participated in major exhibitions worldwide. His work was celebrated in retrospectives at prestigious institutions, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London. Today, his pieces are held in major collections and continue to fetch record prices at auctions, underscoring his enduring legacy.
Giacometti’s impact on modern art is profound. His innovative approach to form and space influenced subsequent generations of artists, from minimalists to contemporary sculptors. His exploration of the human condition, imbued with existential themes, remains relevant, offering profound insights into the complexities of identity and perception.
Conclusion
Alberto Giacometti’s artistic journey is a testament to his relentless pursuit of capturing the essence of human existence. Through his distinctive elongated figures and textured surfaces, he created a visual language that resonates with the existential experience. Giacometti’s legacy as a master of modernist sculpture is secure, his work continuing to inspire and challenge our understanding of art and humanity.

Wanda Magliona:
Painting the Depths of Human Experience
In the picturesque island of Sardinia, Italy, a rising star in the art world is making waves with her evocative paintings that delve into the complexities of the human experience. Meet Wanda Magliona, known by her artistic moniker WM, a 28-year-old selftaught artist whose journey is as compelling as her creations.
Wanda's affinity for art emerged at a young age, but it wasn't until her early twenties that she fully embraced her calling. After a brief stint at the Academy of Fine Arts, where she reignited her passion for painting and drawing, Wanda embarked on a journey of self-discovery and artistic exploration.
Residing in Sardinia, Wanda's artistic endeavors have taken her on a remarkable journey, marked by participation in numerous local and international art events. Her talent and dedication have earned her recognition, including an award for Best Artist from the popular jury at a fair in Cagliari, facilitated by the 070 Gallery. Notably, her paintings were showcased in the historic forts of the Second World War during open monuments, captivating audiences with their stark yet poignant imagery.
Following a period of artistic blockage lasting two to three years, Wanda found renewed inspiration and creative vigor. Her work gained international acclaim, with exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Ravenna Art Gallery and the renowned Carrousel du Louvre in Paris for the Art Shopping Paris event, curated by the Queen Art Studio Gallery.
Currently, Wanda's artwork is prominently featured in galleries across Madrid, including Galería Origen and Casa Maiko Madrid. Her paintings, characterized by their raw emotion and depth, offer a profound exploration of human pain and vulnerability. Drawing inspiration from her observations of society's reluctance to confront mental health issues openly, Wanda's art challenges societal norms and breaks down the stigma surrounding psychological and psychiatric struggles.
For Wanda, art is more than just a form of self-expression; it is a powerful tool for fostering empathy and understanding. Her
paintings serve as a mirror reflecting the raw emotions and experiences of those grappling with inner turmoil, offering solace and validation to those who feel marginalized by society's unrealistic standards of normalcy.

Qigong, also spelled as "chi kung" or "qi gong," is a holistic system of practices originating from China that involves the coordination of physical postures, breathing techniques, mental focus, and meditation with the goal of cultivating and balancing the body's vital energy, known as "qi" or "chi." The term "qigong" is composed of two Chinese words: "qi," which means vital energy or life force, and "gong," which means skill or cultivation. Therefore, qigong can be thought of as the cultivation of one's vital energy.
Key components of qigong include:
• Breathing: Qigong often emphasizes specific breathing techniques, such as deep, slow, and mindful breathing. These techniques are used to enhance the flow of qi in the body.
• Movement: Qigong includes a series of gentle, flowing movements and postures. These movements are designed to stretch and strengthen the body, improve balance, and promote the smooth circulation of qi.
• Meditation: Many qigong practices involve meditation and mental visualization. Practitioners focus their minds on specific areas of the body or visualize the movement of qi through the body's energy channels.
• Sound: Some forms of qigong involve vocalizations or sounds made during practice. These sounds are believed to help stimulate and balance the body's energy.
• Self-massage: Qigong may also incorporate selfmassage techniques, such as tapping or gently massaging certain acupressure points, to stimulate qi flow.
Qigong is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and philosophy and is often used for the purposes of promoting physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual development. It is practiced for various reasons, including stress reduction, relaxation, increased energy, improved flexibility, and better overall health.
There are many different styles and forms of qigong, ranging from those focused on health and relaxation to more martial and rigorous practices. Tai Chi, for example, is a well-known form of qigong that incorporates martial arts elements.
It's important to note that while qigong has been associated with various health benefits, it should not be used as a replacement for medical treatment when needed. If you're interested in trying qigong, it's a good idea to learn from a qualified instructor who can guide you in the proper techniques and practices.

Artist Bianca Turner
The Journey of an Economist Turned Artist
Why did you start working as an artist?
I started painting over 24 years ago. Initially, it was a hobby and a therapeutic outlet to relieve the daily stress from my corporate job at an American company. Over time, my collection of artworks grew significantly. Given my background as an economist and marketing specialist, I recognized the potential for my art to reach a broader audience. One pivotal moment occurred during a monotonous business meeting when my boss said, "If you do what you are passionate about, you will never feel like working a day in your life." This idea resonated deeply with me. A few years later, I transitioned to a full-time artist. Since then, I feel like I am on a perpetual vacation, even though I often work 16 hours a day. I love every aspect of my artistic career.
How do you select your subject matter?
I am a highly productive artist with a vivid imagination, drawing inspiration from everything I see, hear, smell, and experience. My surroundings, from the stunning nature in Los Angeles to global societal issues, provide a wealth of material. My creative process is fueled by this blend of real-world stimuli and my imaginative flair, often laced with a touch of sarcasm. Over my career, I have painted over 700 pieces.
How do you create one of your works? What's unique or unusual about your technique/process?
My creative process might not be drastically different from others, but it involves a specific routine. Unlike many artists who might feel their work before starting, I need to contemplate my subject thoroughly. Usually, it revolves around something that upsets me. I take a drive to think deeply about the subject until I can visualize the entire painting in my mind. Once I have a clear mental image, I return home and begin painting, often meditating as I work. This meditation can sometimes subtly change the direction of my painting. For instance, in one of my recent pieces, I was perturbed by someone dear to me repeatedly calling me "my friend" without using my name. This triggered a new collection of paintings centered around the theme of passive dehumanization, beginning with a work titled "I'm not your friend."
Did you begin with this style or was it an evolution?
I often wonder why I can't stick to one style, why I can't "marry" a single style that would make my art easily recognizable. I believe my tendency to constantly evolve or mix styles stems from a fear of copyright infringement—not from other artists but from AI algorithms. I am currently writing my second book, exploring the issues artists face with AI-generated art. Through my research, I discovered that AI perceives art differently than the human eye, leading to an "aha" moment where I figured out how to prevent AI from replicating my work.
How would you describe your work?
My work is colorful, simple, sarcastic, and sometimes lyrically abstract. It often conveys bold messages. I become deeply immersed in my creations, sometimes considering the elements within my paintings as either friends or foes. Engaging in a dialogue with these creations is a common part of my artistic process.
Do you learn from the criticism of your work?
Absolutely. I believe in the Latin phrase "de gustibus non est disputandum" (in matters of taste, there can be no disputes). I welcome all feedback, whether positive or negative, because as an extrovert, I thrive on it. In my book, "The Business of Art," I advise artists to provide simple explanations of their work to make it accessible to the public. Unfortunately, art critics often use complex language that doesn't offer meaningful feedback to artists. One of my works was reviewed by the art critic Jerry Saltz, who described it with a single word: "clever." I appreciated the succinct and valuable feedback.
How has social media affected your work?
Social media has been a tremendous positive force, offering free advertising that I can control. I encourage all tier 2 or 3 artists (as explained in my book "The Business of Art") to use social media to their advantage. My goal is to reach a
point where I no longer need social media for promotion. Although I'm not there yet, I am actively working towards it.
What's your future plan?
I am fully committed to my artistic career. Recently, I exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and other museums in Asia and the USA. Over the next few years, I aim to expand my presence in more museums worldwide. Additionally, I am focusing on creating art for Los Angeles in preparation for the 2028 Summer Olympics, which presents a significant opportunity given my residence and work in the city.
Conclusion
Dr. Bianca Turner’s journey from economist and marketing specialist to full-time artist is a testament to the transformative power of following one's passion. Her unique blend of colorful, imaginative, and often sarcastic works continues to evolve, pushing boundaries and challenging both human and AI perceptions of art. As she looks to the future, her dedication to her craft and her strategic use of social media position her as a dynamic force in the contemporary art world.

A Journey Through Abstract Art with Torsten Trantow:
Why Did You Start Working as an Artist?
Thank you very much for inviting me to this interesting interview. For me, art is a way of channeling my own creative energy. I have been immersed in art for a long time, starting with seeing, observing, tasting, feeling, and hearing. I perceive all the influences around me— people, landscapes, architecture—and my mind silently processes these into emotional sensations. I then try to reflect these feelings in my works abstractly. Art is my outlet, and it provides a balance for my soul.
How Do You Select Your Subject Matter?
What truly captivates me is the vast array of colors that nature presents. A blooming meadow in summer, filled with wildflowers, is pure energy. I absorb that vibrancy. Rich colors blend with delicate hues, creating a buzz of life. In stark contrast to this natural spectrum, I find inspiration in urban textures, such as graffiti in underpasses, facades, and walls. Crumbling plaster and dusty stones, showing the wear of time and elements, intrigue me. My current work on canvas aims to merge these contrasting elements—the colorful vitality of nature with the worn textures of the city.
How Do You Create One of Your Works? What's Unique or Unusual About Your Technique/Process?
When I start with a fresh canvas, I recently began filming the initial steps of my process and sharing them on Instagram. This helps me overcome the intimidation of the blank canvas. I let myself be guided by my emotions and the colors I choose. Lately, I've been using various spatulas, enjoying the thick, rich application of paint. The spatula feels comfortable in my hand. Occasionally, I use a water hose to create textures that mimic weathering, giving the canvas a sense of age. This mixed technique results in longer drying times but creates striking effects.
Did You Begin With This Style, or Was It an Evolution?
This style introduced me to abstract painting, and I find it thrilling to experiment with colors and canvas. Comparing my current works to older pieces, I can see significant development. This evolution excites me, and I look forward to seeing where this path will lead in the future.
How Would You Describe Your Work?
Art is a place of self-reflection for me. Working on canvas provides a balance to my everyday life. I value the solitude of my small studio, surrounded by paints, tools, and materials. Here, I feel my own energy more intensely and strive to share this pulse with the canvas. Sometimes, I simply observe the work without actively painting. In these moments, the direction of the piece can change dramatically, leading to surprising results. The final outcome often astonishes me.
Do You Learn From Criticism of Your Work?
I believe criticism is important as it indicates that my work is being noticed, regardless of whether the feedback is positive or negative. Negative criticism can often be a useful guidepost. Ultimately, though, my intuition remains my most reliable critic.
How Has Social Media Affected Your Work?
Today, social media is an indispensable tool for artists. Growing up in the 70s, I didn't have these opportunities, so I might not always be up-to-date with the latest trends. Nevertheless, I find technological advancements exciting, especially as we stand on the brink of an AIdriven era that promises to bring significant changes. I use social media to connect with other artists and share my work. While the internet doesn't directly influence my art, it's always intriguing to see people's reactions to my pieces.
What's Your Future Plan?
I plan to continue my current series this year and look forward to participating in three art fairs this fall: Roma Arte in Nuvola, ArtMuc in Munich, and Art3f in Paris. Some of my works will be displayed at these events, and I am excited about the opportunities they present.
Conclusion
Torsten Trantow's artistic journey from graphic designer to abstract painter showcases his deep passion for exploring colors, textures, and emotions. Navigating the Digital Frontier: Understanding NFTs
Introduction
In recent years, the digital world has given rise to a new and exciting frontier for artists, collectors, and tech enthusiasts alike: Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). NFTs have captured headlines and sparked a digital revolution, offering a unique and innovative way to buy, sell, and own digital assets. This article explores the concept of NFTs, their impact on various industries, and the questions they raise about ownership, authenticity, and the future of digital content.
What is an NFT?
Non-Fungible Tokens, or NFTs, are unique digital tokens that represent ownership of a specific digital asset, often linked to digital art, collectibles, music, videos, virtual real estate, or other digital creations. Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum, which are fungible and interchangeable, NFTs are one-of-a-kind and cannot be exchanged on a one-to-one basis. Each NFT is stored on a blockchain, a decentralized and secure ledger technology, which ensures the provenance and authenticity of the digital asset.
The Digital Art Boom
One of the most prominent and transformative uses of NFTs is in the art world. Digital artists have found a new way to monetize their creations by minting them as NFTs and selling them in online
marketplaces. This has opened up opportunities for artists to directly reach collectors and receive a share of the resale value whenever their NFTs change hands.
The sale of Beeple's "Everydays: The First 5000 Days" for $69 million in early 2021 brought global attention to NFTs and the potential for digital art to be highly valued.
Collectibles and Virtual Real Estate
Beyond art, NFTs have infiltrated the world of collectibles, sports memorabilia, and even virtual real estate. NBA Top Shot, for example, offers digital trading cards in the form of NFTs, allowing fans to buy, sell, and trade iconic moments from NBA games. Virtual worlds like Decentraland and The Sandbox are using NFTs to establish virtual real estate markets, where users can buy, develop, and sell digital land and assets within these metaverse environments.
Challenges and Controversies
While NFTs have brought exciting opportunities, they have also sparked debates and controversies. Environmental concerns surrounding the energy-intensive nature of some blockchain networks used for NFTs have raised questions about their sustainability. Additionally, issues related to copyright infringement, plagiarism, and intellectual property rights have arisen as the NFT space evolves.
The Future of NFTs
As NFTs continue to gain momentum, their future remains uncertain but promising. They have the potential to revolutionize the way we think about ownership in the digital age, providing creators with new revenue streams and collectors with unique assets to cherish. The integration of NFT technology into gaming, virtual reality, and other digital experiences is likely to play a significant role in their development.
In conclusion, Non-Fungible Tokens are at the forefront of a digital renaissance, redefining ownership and value in the digital realm. While they come with challenges and questions, their potential to empower creators and collectors and reshape various industries is undeniable. As NFTs continue to evolve and find new applications, they invite us to explore the boundless possibilities of the digital frontier.
