Opening Reception June 16, 2011: 6-9pm / Exhibition: June 17-August 31 gallery nine5 is pleased to present FEATURED, a collective exhibition of new and recent works drawn from the gallery nine5 collection. This dynamic and colorful show will feature a wide variety of cuttingedge works in all media. From exquisite Chinese ink on rice paper drawings to abstract paintings and large-scale installations, FEATURED caters to all tastes. Works will be rotated throughout the summer to ensure a consistently fresh experience. Among other artists, internationally renowned photographer William Coupon will be participating in FEATURED. Well-known for his portraits of celebrities and world leaders, Coupon has photographed fifteen TIME magazine covers in addition to being included repeatedly in the New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Forbes and Vanity Fair. Works by international street art maestro, L’Atlas, will be on display throughout the exhibition. L’Atlas has completed commissions for the Cartier Foundation and many other prestigious arts institutions. In 2008, the artist staged a performance in conjunction with the Pompidou Center, Paris, which was received to critical acclaim. Paintings and silkscreens by New York artist Steve Ellis will also be included it the exhibition. Best known for his iconic lighter series, Ellis is a central figure

in downtown Manhattan’s vibrant art scene. Gonzalo Papantonakis, a Uruguayan artist, will also feature in the show. Papantonakis’ energetic paintings demonstrate his innovative approach to composition and assemblage, and are held in many private collections worldwide. The artist has completed numerous site-specific works including a monumental installation in the Thompson Hotel’s ‘Thom Bar’ in New York City. Pieces by Liset Castillo, recipient of the 2004-5 Guggenheim fellowship, will be on show later in the season. Exceptional installation works and paintings by Michael Murphy will also be on display. Murphy has also completed many site-specific installations throughout the U.S., including creating the Manifest Hope Washington DC memorial for Martin Luther King Jr. The artist will stage an incredible light and sound installation in New York City’s Washington Square Park to launch his solo exhibition at gallery nine5 this September. AGNES PEZEU.
Agnes Pezeu creates life-sized expressionistic portraits.
The fluidity and palpable lightness of the canvases convey a sense of intangibility, yet they give transient, fleeting moments of time permanence. Their delicacy, however, is balanced by a dynamism deriving from the strong sense of movement emanating from each figure. This duality is further explored by the absence of the model no longer physically present on the canvas, yet forever present in the lines of paint. Working in a similar manner to the action painters of the 1940s, Pezeu traces charcoal outlines of models enacting various scenes before drizzling paint over the canvas to further delineate the silhouettes.
The result is expressionist portraits swathed in color, lashings of paint and hints
of charcoal. Pezeu has painted frescos in numerous French cities in addition to completing private commissions. Her work is held in private collections throughout Paris, Lyon, Milan, Rome, Seoul, Tokyo, Istanbul, New York, Montreal, London and Madrid. Pezeu has been featured in numerous publications such as NY Arts magazine.

Alben’s work identifies strongly with graffiti and street art. The artist’s bold canvases
are saturated with Pop iconography from the 1950s to the present day. Hollywood icons, monarchs, kitsch items, canonical artworks, vintage cars, superheroes, and images from the artist’s childhood all combine to create artwork rich in enigmatic symbolism. Self-taught, the artist works primarily in spray paint and individually crafted stencils—each one made by hand. In a manner intentionally referential to French modernist artist Arman, Alben builds up a dizzying accumulation of images in his works. However, Alben’s use of diverse words, figures and references functions to create multiple layers of hidden symbols and meanings. The juxtapositions of such recognizable imagery in his colorful, energetic pieces create a subtle humor, establishing an intimate and witty relationship with his audience. The artist has exhibited widely throughout Europe, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, in addition to having created a number of site-specific installations throughout France. Works by Alben are held in public and private collections throughout Paris, Dubai, Hong Kong, Australia, Bordeaux, London, New York and Chicago.

weaves the written word, disparate objects and abstract images together in energetic installations that re-imagine pictorial surfaces. Papantonakis’ innovative approach to composition and assemblage continues from that of the Neo-Dadaists, particularly Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Forging a new visual language, the artist’s powerful, multi-dimensional installations are comprised of a staggering range of media and frequently extend onto multiple canvases and panels. Based in Los Angeles, Papantonakis spent his childhood between Uruguay and Argentina before traveling extensively throughout Europe and the United States. The artist’s work is held in prestigious collections throughout Europe, the United States, Latin America, Australia and Asia. Papantonakis has also completed numerous sitespecific works including a monumental installation at the Thompson Hotel (Thom Bar) in New York City.

A Parisian street artist, L’Atlas completes site-specific, graffiti-inspired
installations throughout the world. Recently, he has been creating stunning silk-screened street fragments and manholes. Most recently, he has visited the U.S., India and Russia. Executed predominantly in black and white, the artist’s bold, calligraphic works provide a stark contrast to the muddied colors of urban centers. In 2009 L’Atlas was awared a prestigoius commission by the Cartier Foundation to create a large-scale installation. Other notable installations include his 2008 performance in conjunction with the Pompidou Center, Paris, and a 2009 performance in Washington Square Park, New York, all of which have attracted critical acclaim.

Michael Murphy’s sophisticated conceptual
approach to creation is evident in his constant search for new and innovative methods of artistic practice. The artist’s virtuosity spans a staggering range of media: sculpture, drawing, painting, sound and installation. Fascinated with light, color, tone and shape, Murphy strives to challenge the boundaries between the second and third dimensions, with optical illusions often employed to this end. Works such as Red Cross appear as if they are flat planes from a distance, however, when viewed from a closer standpoint, become symbol rich, three-dimensional objects. Portraiture plays an important role in the artist’s oeuvre. Murphy is capable of imbuing his subjects with profound psychological intensity. The artist’s wire portrait of President Barack Obama was received to critical acclaim and was featured in TIME magazine’s December 2008 issue. Iris, a nail and shadow portrait depicting a young woman delicately echoes the girl’s personality traits in its formal properties. The artist has exhibited widely throughout the United States. Most recently, Murphy participated in the widely-publicized Re:Form School exhibition in New York City alongside works by Shepard Fairey, Swoon and Ron English. Oona Ratcliffe’s alluring paintings and gouaches
capture the frenetic energy of contemporary urban life. Alive with color, the works vibrate with a vitality that extends into the surrounding space. The highly sensorial pieces begin as pencil drawings before the artist applies layer after layer of paint pigment, resulting in luminous, smooth symphonies of color. Ratcliffe will intuitively deviate from the preparatory sketch, allowing each work to emerge organically. Despite the abstraction, one senses that the vibrant swirls and splashes of color depict distinct topographies. Building upon a background in pleine-air landscape painting, the artist considers her works to represent emotional landscapes. Ratcliffe studied art at the Louvre, Paris, before completing her Master’s degree in Fine Arts at New York’s prestigious Hunter College. One of New York’s finest Pop Realist painters, Steve Ellis is
well known for his technically virtuosic paintings. His dynamic representational technique uses pop culture iconography to explore various issues emerging from contemporary consumerism, often favoring the depiction of single objects rendered with near fetishistic focus. Previous series have investigated the death of print media and the damaged, transitory beauty of American popular culture, featuring consumer detritus such as torn magazines, cigarette lighters, knives, broken high-heeled shoes, and crashed cars. Following the tradition of Pop-art masters, recent works have demonstrated Ellis’ skillful explorations not just of new content, but of a wider range of media, including silk screens, wallpaper, light boxes and mixed media installations. Born in Washington D.C., Ellis was raised in various cities within the United States. In 1989, the artist moved to New York City to study at the prestigious School of Visual Arts, where he excelled in realism. Following his graduation, Ellis lived and worked in downtown New York, cultivating his aesthetic by immersing himself in the vibrant subculture of the city’s nightlife. Ellis has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. in addition to several international shows. These include exhibitions at the AC Institute, the Gershwin Hotel, the Studio @ 620, SoHo House, American Fine Arts and the Lexington Armory. Ellis’ works are held in private collections in Tokyo, Rome, Seoul, Moscow, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Auckland (New Zealand), Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, New York, Dallas, and Philadelphia. He is currently a painting instructor at the School of Visual Arts.

Fascinated by the mass-
production and fetishization of hyper-sexualized Japanese figurines, Jessica Lichtenstein manipulates the presentation and context of mass-produced anime dolls in order to imbue them with new associations and richer meanings. Originally lifeless figurines packaged alongside hundreds of identical toys, the dolls emerge from their boxes and are placed in real-world situations by the artist, from shopping, cooking or gardening, to looking at art or enjoying a cocktail. Each girl is given specifically Western accoutrements: designer shoes and bags, bottles of champagne, shelves of nail polishes, expensive Italian luggage, and chess pieces. Lichtenstein uses the figurines to explore female sexuality and the use of eroticism as a narrative device. Each of her anime figures is conscious that she is being offered to the audience for examination. The highly stylized poses convey self-awareness and confidence, as Lichtenstein strives to vest each girl with an innate sense of empowerment and shared experience. Every vignette in Lichtenstein’s installations functions as a slate upon which the viewer can project his or her own aspirations and fantasies.

Of Chinese descent, Tim Hon Hung
Lee draws from the stories and memories of his family and ancestors, establishing a delicate visual harmony between his Eastern heritage and Western upbringing. Executed in Chinese ink on rice paper, Lee’s exquisite drawings combine the philosophies, techniques and media from these two spheres of influence. Bridging the chasm between his Asian ancestry and British childhood, the compositions and rhythms of classical Asian art are realized with a Western perspective and realist depiction of subjects. Lee explains, “as a result, my work operates as a series of projected nostalgias and exaggerated narratives that create a vivid sense of the past - a historical tale or a lyrical dream”. Tim Hon Hung Lee holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with Honors) from Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. He has exhibited widely throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia and North America. JACK ROBINSON.
Jack Robinson creates ‘scannograms’. Working
in a manner evocative of Man Ray, Robinson’s work reflects his pre-occupation with mechanical processes, form and space. Each work presents the viewer with Robinson’s abstracted interpretation of people and objects. Robinson’s process is simple, yet strikingly ingenious. Using a digital flatbed scanner as if it were a camera, the artist creates a series of digital files. The individual frames are then painstakingly arranged to create a life-size image. The length of time Robinson takes to complete each work is an integral part of his artistic practice. A single scan takes around 40 seconds, with up to 150 separate scans needed to create one scannogram. This establishes an intimate bond between artist and subject, resulting from both the physical proximity needed to take the scans, and the necessary duration of this closeness. Robinson studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh prior to relocating to New York. He has exhibited widely, including solo shows at the Gershwin Hotel, Fluxcore Gallery and Pittsburgh Filmmakers Media Arts Center. Group shows include exhibitions at the Governor’s Island Art Fair, Nine Eyes Gallery, The Studio at 620, the Lower East Side Arts Festival, Barthelemy Solomon Gallery and the Carnegie Museum

Born in the American Mid-West Jessie Henson
gracefully imbues her pieces with the region’s strong tradition of craftwork. The work on display at gallery nine5 are drawn from a series investigating the artist’s childhood memories of the apartment her family lived in. Each piece is delicately fragmented, moving in and out of focus. The figurative pieces are incredibly detailed in some parts, and sparsely illustrated in others, beautifully mimicking the nature of memory. “Through collecting objects, accumulating stitches, lines or circles in drawings and sculptures, I am creating worlds to exist within. My works attempt to negotiate the fragility and mystery of the world, while searching out the sublime and the possibility of wonder” - Jessie Henson. Henson has been the recipient of numerous grants and prizes, including the National Arts Club Award, the VSC fellowship (supported by the Joan Mitchell Foundation), the Berthold Schmutzhart Sculpture Grant, the Martha von Hirsch Fellowship, and the Lola Sarnoff Sculpture Fellowship.

KENNEDY JAMES.
Is fascinated with social dichotomies,
particularly those found within Japanese culture. On display at gallery nine5 are new and recent works from the artist’s ‘Serial Bondage’ series. The works feature armchairs tied with rope in the ‘Shibari’ style, an ancient Japanese practice of ritualized erotic binding.
Used most frequently in
the series are chairs in Louis XV, Napoleon III or Voltaire style, due to their more anthropomorphic appearance.
These
sculptures
brilliantly
investigate
the
complexities
inherent
in
dominant/
submissive relationships and their tacit existence in nearly all levels of Japanese society.
James
has exhibited throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Shanghai MoMA, and the Casoria Contemporary Art Museum, Naples. Her work has been featured in Art Review, Art Slant, Mutual Art, Rouen Magazine and Telerama.
