The Impressionism of Daniil Volkov I remember the first time I received images of an artist named Daniil Volkov. The majority of paintings I first saw were small plein air works from Daniil’s recent trip to Venice. I remember several “wow” moments. For instance, here was an artist who took the time tested subject matter of Venice and turned it on its head—no, not all artists painted Venice in the same way after all! A second realization was that I was looking at true impressionism and not realism with fuzzy lines. To be certain, I looked up the definition that mentioned such things as “a visual impression of the moment especially in terms of the shifting effect of light and color. . . an artistic style that seeks to capture a feeling or experience rather than to achieve accurate depiction.” Yes, Daniil was a true impressionist. Finally, the most odd realization was that I did not like every single painting. A strange thing to say, but how refreshing! Here was a painter taking chances and pushing boundaries. Here was a painter who could line up 20 paintings in front of a room of strangers that actually garnered multiple viewpoints, great discussions and a different “like” list for each person. He was a painter whose impressions were going to stand the test of time! So, several years and a thousand fans later, Gallery Russia is honored to present its first monograph on the beautiful works of Daniil Volkov. This third generation painter from Crimea embodies a master impressionist. While he remains true to his academic and technical foundations, his creativity is continuing to grow. When I receive an email with new works from Daniil, I make sure I have a fresh cup of coffee first because I know I will not leave my desk until all paintings have been viewed. And he does not disappoint! I invite you to keep and to share this catalog with as many persons as you can. You will see just how much the world likes a master of impressionism.
