Outstanding Student Works from the Academy St. Petersburg, Russia 2020

An Exhibition from the St. Petersburg Academy Oh how we wish we had a much larger gallery! For the last six months we have been working to source paintings for this exhibition and wish we could have taken many more. Nevertheless, we think we have put together a great collection. These paintings are by 17 artists who are either late year students or recent graduates of the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in St. Petersburg, Russia. The vast majority of works were completed during their time at the Academy as part of their compulsory curriculum. We are quite lucky to have so many great paintings as the majority of works of this high quality are often taken straight into the Academy’s permanent collection. The Academy was founded in 1757 as part of the creation of the Russian Academy of Arts. Over its 263 year history, there have been some amazing graduates from the Academy’s Painting Department! Some of the more noteworthy names include Karl Bryullov, Ivan Kramskoi, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel and Nicolai Fechin. Some of the great Soviet Era graduates include Isaak Brodsky, Aleksandr Laktionov, Nikolai Timkov, Piotr Fomin, Oleg Lomakin, Yuri Neprintsev, Piotr Belousov and many more. The Academy has always been focused on the deep-rooted traditions of realistic art. In the Painting Department (in addition to the departments of sculpture, architecture, graphic arts and history) instruction involves a lengthy study of nature and analysis of form. According to the onetime President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Boris Ugarov, “the study of nature develops the artist’s ability to conceptualize and is coupled with his artistic interpretation.” Each of the 6 years of study is very carefully targeted around drawing and painting with a specific focus. For instance, the first year almost exclusively focuses on drawing and painting the human head while the second year focuses on the anatomical analysis of the full human figure. The sixth and final year is spent exclusively on a large format multi-figurative genre scene. These “diploma” paintings stay in the permanent collection of the Academy. Paul Scott Gallery is really happy to show you a glimpse of the talent level the Academy has in its studios. These artists are hard-working and gifted. We hope you enjoy the skill level and originality of their works as we do. Of course, keep an eye on them in the future as they are just beginning their careers in a big world hungry for their skills! Paul Eubanks
