Paul Scott Gallery New Works:

VLADIMIR KOVALOV

Paul Scott Gallery has had a strong relationship with Ukrainian painter, Vladimir Kovalov,

for two years now. His paintings are always full of lush brushwork, strong palettes and impactful compositions. The thirty-six year old artist graduated from the Kharkov Art Academy along with some of our other painters such as Artem Tolstukhin, Aleksandr Britsev, Jaroslav Leonets and Denis Sarazhin. He currently teaches painting at the Academy. We hope you can experience the same passion and skill in his paintings that we do. Enjoy the short interview! You do seem to enjoy painting still lifes? Yes, that is true. It is my favorite genre for several reasons, mostly because it is always available (especially important this year.) I like the challenge of trying to bring the “presence of a person” into each still life. Hopefully, there is always a story. Do you have some favorite contemporary artists? I myself like the works of Alexander Kriushin. He has a high level of painting with unique compositions. Of course, he is good friend of mine! I, also, like the young painter, Igor Nekrahi. He is probably the most active and the most talented last year student during 10 years of teaching at the Academy I had the privilege to work with. Do you consider yourself an impressionist? Definitely. It is important for me to show the audience my personal feelings at the moment a painting is being made. Such a painting is impressionistic by nature. If you had to name 3 requirements to make a good painting, what would they be? Two of the three requirements are pretty basic, but important. First, you must want to create. Second, you need to make sure you have a strong idea. Finally, you must have a mastery of painting. These three things are essential to creating strong art.

Vladimir Kovalov

If you could travel anywhere in the world to paint where would you go? I would further explore Europe with some plein air trips. In general, I want to learn more about nature, architecture and the lifestyle of Africa and Asia. If you were to paint one very large painting right now that took a year to paint, what would you do? I would really like to paint such a work that is based on family. The painting would bring love and happiness. I want my paintings to reflect the best in the world! If you were teaching a class, what advice would you give the beginning student and what advice would you give the expert student? My advice to a beginning student is to really be certain you want to be an artist for the rest of your life because creating great art takes a lifetime. My advice to the experienced painter is to keep working but also continue to grow creatively. Finally, where would you like to see your art career in 20 years? Right now, I am really working on more freely thinking about my art and in the actual painting process itself. In 20 years, I hope I have accomplished these goals.
