TO LIVE A LIFE OF RICH SENSIBILITY IS OF GREAT VALUE. WHAT IS NEEDED FOR THAT IS A CLEAR PERCEPTION OF LIFE IN ORDER TO KEEP PACE WITH IT, TO SYNCHRONIZE WITH ITS RHYTHM. TO LIVE A LIFE LIKE THIS I TRY TO SEEK THIS CLARITY OF PERCEPTION EVERY MOMENT IN MY DAILY WORK. TRY IS NOT THE RIGHT WORD, PASSIONATE QUEST IS RATHER A BETTER EXPRESSION . TO BE INVOLVED WITH ART, THE SHEER ABILITY TO GET INVOLVED IS AN IMMENSE GAIN, A GREAT COMMITMENT, A GREAT RESPONSIBILITY. THE JOURNEY IS FROM THE UGLY TO THE BEAUTIFUL, FROM THE ACT OF DISLIKING TO THAT OF LIKING, FROM LOSING SOMETHING TO GETTING IT BACK, FROM IMAGINATION TO REALITY AND FROM THE SPHERE OF REALITY TO THE FREE ARENA OF GOD, OUR FATHER. I PLAY THEREFORE DAY OUT AND DAY IN WITH SUNDRY IRONWARE, BROKEN PIECES OF WOOD, UTENSILS OF WORSHIP , KITCHEN THINGS, FURNITURE PIECES, BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS IN A WORD, EVERYTHING THAT COMES MY WAY. SOMETIMES I BUILD, SOMETIMES I UNBUILD NAY, I DON T PULL DOWN I DO BUILD ONLY. I BUILD MY SURROUNDINGS WITH BEAUTIFUL OBJECTS, WITH SCULPTURES, WITH DREAMS. OCCASIONALLY IT TAKES ON THE SHAPE OF A BIG WALL. MY IDENTITY STANDS TALLER THAN ME. THAT S WHY I STRAY AWAY FAR FROM YOUR BEAUTY, YOUR SMELL, YOUR FEEL. THEN I FEEL TIRED IN BODY AND SPIRIT. JEHANGIR ART GALLERY, MUMBAI ON 28TH AUGUST 2012, 5PM - 9PM. ON VIEW TILL 3RD SEPTEMBER 2012 11AM - 7PM
AND THEN I QUEST FOR FREEDOM TO GET LOST IN YOU. I IGNORE GRAMMAR AND CONVENTIONAL RULES OF ART, CROSS THE LIMITS OF GENRES LIKE SCULPTURE AND PAINTING AND I LOOSE AND SEEK MYSELF IN THE ARTS AND CRAFT OF INTERIOR DECORATIONS, ILLUMINATION, FURNITURE WORKS, IN FORM AND FORMLESSNESS. THIS EXHIBITION, TITLED NARAYAN S WORLD, BEARS AN ACCOUNT OF MY INNER IDENTITY SINCE THE START OF MY CAREER AS ARTIST TO THE PRESENT DAY. RECORDED HERE ARE MY CHILDHOOD, MY ADOLESCENCE, MY YOUTH AND MY PRESENT. THERE ARE ALSO TRACES OF MY EFFORT TO RISE ABOVE WHERE I AM TODAY AND OF MY QUEST FOR FREEDOM.

IN MY WORLD OF METAL... ME & MY FATHER BOND OVER THE MATERIAL... HE OWNS A LATHE FACTORY...
MY LIFE REVOLVS AROUND MY CHILDHOOD FRIENDS....
WHEN ME, PORITOSH AND THE GANG ARE TOGETHER, I REMEMBER HERDS OF COWS... TOGETHER AS A MASS ... OF PLEASURE!
LIKE BIRDS OF THE SAME FEATHER...
THE STATION IS A PART OF MY LIFE NOW.... I HATE TRAVELLING...
WE USED TO GO QUITE OFTEN TO THE STATION TO HAVE JHALMURI ...WITH A TOPPING OF A COCONUT SLICE
...BACK TO ADDA...
GOOD FOOD... GOOD FRIENDS... HAPPINESS... BONG AND FISH !
GARI... BARI...
POWER IS IMPORTANT... IS POWER IMPORTANT? POWER IS REQUIRED... IS IT? I LL HAVE TO BECOME MORE POWERFULL...
I WANT ART TO FLOW IN ALL ASPECTS OF OUR LIFE...
EXTERIOR... INTERIOR... EVERYWHERE !
TIME IS POWERFULL... IT MAKES AND BREAKS US...
WAS IT TALAGURI AND AMURA... THE TWO TRIBAL GIRLS IN MY NEIBHOURHOOD WHO INSPIRED MY JEWELRY!
...OR WERE IT THE DIVAS WHO ADORNED MY JEWELRY
BUT THEY ARE ALL SO BEAUTIFUL IN THEIR OWN WAYS !
SOMETIMES LIFE SEEMS TO CONSPIRE AND HOLES EMERGE IN OUR FRIENDSHIP...
g _ WE STRUGGLE TO SWIM AND SURVIVE...
g _ BUT THE VOID REMAINS...
BUT WHEN I FINALLY REFLECT UPON IT ALL...
AND MY MIND CLEARS UP...
TO THE BEAUTY OF OUR EXISTENCE...
g _

EVERYTHING FEELS IN PLACE... EVERYTHING !
AND IN SUCH MOMENTS OF UTTER PEACE, I FEEL LIBERATED...
FROM THE BURDENS OF THIS WORLD... MY WORLD ...
FOR 35-YEAR-OLD SCULPTOR, NARAYAN SINHA, ART IS ALL ABOUT CELEBRATING BEAUTY. SINHA IS MOSTLY KNOWN FOR HIS INSTALLATIONS CREATED WITH JUNK AUTOMOBILE PARTS, METAL DRUMS, FUEL TANKS OF KEROSENE STOVES AND MORE. THE SELF-TAUGHT INSTALLATION ARTIST HAILS FROM A BUSINESS FAMILY THAT LIVES IN NALHATI. AUTOMOBILE PARTS WERE ONE OF THEIR MANY BUSINESS INTERESTS AND HE GREW UP PLAYING WITH ACCUMULATED AUTO-RELATED JUNK. HE ALSO KNOCKS TOGETHER FURNITURE WITH SCRAP MATERIAL. SO EXPECT A COUCH WITH A BACK SUPPORT MADE FROM AN AMBASSADOR CAR'S FENDERS OR A CHAIR MADE WITH OLD WOODEN DOORS AND GRILLS. SUCCESS CAME TO HIM EARLY. HIS FIRST EXHIBITION WAS HELD IN 2000 IN MUMBAI. HE WAS STILL PRIMARILY A PAINTER. SOMETIME LATER, HE DID A SOLO SHOW IN CALCUTTA. SEEING THE SIZE OF THE GALLERY, HE DECIDED TO HAVE SOME FUN. HE INTERSPERSED HIS CANVASES WITH MASKS MADE FROM SCRAP METAL, WHICH CRITICS LOVED. AND HIS JOURNEY AS AN ARTIST CHANGED TRACKS. CHOOSING SCULPTURE WAS A NATURAL PROGRESSION IN HIS CAREER. EXTRACTING THE ESSENCE OF THE TRADITIONAL RITUALISTIC LIFE AND MODERNIST TECHNOLOGY HE CREATES AN AMBIENCE WHERE POST-MODERN CONCEPT OF EVALUATING LOCAL TRADITION AND CULTURE AND PLACING THEM IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE. THIS IS MORE EVIDENT FROM THE INSTALLATIONS THAT HE HAS CREATED WITH VARIOUS METALLIC AND COTTON ITEMS USED IN DAILY LIFE. ELEVATING THE INDIGENOUS OR LOCAL TOWARDS A GLOBAL CONCEPT IS AN ESSENTIAL FEATURE OF HIS EXHIBITIONS. AT THE END OF 2008, HE SLIPPED INTO A SELF-IMPOSED EXILE IN THE SECLUSION OF HIS COUNTRY HOME IN NALHATI, WORKING ON FIVE DIFFERENT THEMES FOR AS MANY SOLO SHOWS SCHEDULED FOR 2011/2012.
