GALLERY STOCK NEW ARTIST DANIELLE NELSON MOURNING

GALLERYSTOCK INTERVIEW DANIELLE NELSON MOURNING Danielle, where are you from originally? How did you first develop an interest in photography? I was born in San Francisco and raised in Marin County, California. My parents always had cameras around. A kind man asked to use one of my photographs for his sizing examples in a one hour photo shop when I was eleven or so. This man gave me confidence to recognize my vision. I photographed all the time after that. What event do you consider as your first big break or milestone in the industry? While I was in my second year of graduate school at The Royal College of Art, I applied for a grant from Deutsche Bank. They gave a generous amount to one graduating artist. Though the process was very intense and nerve racking, I was chosen and could then go to Ireland for two months after graduation to continue my work. I was very proud of myself for trying, and incredibly honored to be chosen. Upon my return from Ireland, Deutsche Bank then purchased three photographs for their permanent collection. Tell us about your new project as I know you are headed out shortly on a road trip to make new work. What’s compelling you to make this work and what’s your thought process behind it? I am super inspired when I am traveling alone. I want to see some parts of the country I have never seen. The smaller the town the better. My first stop is a ghost town called Bodie. I have been kinda obsessed with the past but this project is about connecting some questions I have about our

future. I also have no idea what will come up for me. I want to sit in the back of a lot of church services, go to a rodeo, county fairs and not only photograph but listen. It is definitely a tradition for many artists to take this journey. I am excited to see what happens. Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your artwork? Receiving the blessing to still create art and hopefully making something honest and beautiful. Danielle, tell us about your influences… whose work do you enjoy looking at? Who is one of your favorite photographers and why? Joel Sternfeld and Mitch Epstein are two of my favorite artists because their photographs never bore me, can make me consider my own work and make me laugh and cry they are so compelling. I keep coming back to them. I have also really enjoyed watching Alec Soth’s work evolve. Louise Bourgeois, Tracy Emin - how does the crazy bird do it?...love her. Films by Alfred Hitchcock, Paul Thomas Anderson and the recent Mike Mills movie called, “Beginners” is fantastic! Lynn Ramsay’s film, “Ratcatcher” and family snapshots from the 40s-70s are my ultimate inspiration. I want to dive into most of them. Nothing is more powerful than the California coast line. Small museums like the Wallace Collection or John Soane’s home in London - I adore walking through. Right now my hang out is at the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco. I also just discovered Julie Cockburn. Her work is very intriguing.

What advice would you give to an emerging photographer just starting out in the business today? What is the most important lesson you’ve learned thus far in the industry? Persistence...treat every day like it is the last. Years fly by! Make lists-rework the lists each day. Set realistic goals. Go to see art or whatever can inspire you and have an art journal. I am constantly putting things from newspapers, magazines or internet in my journal or on the wall for reference. I learned that early on at Art Center in Pasadena. Connect with artists you love. Ideally, find a mentor. Get your ass out there and meet people. Stay in touch with contacts. But when you have an amazing idea, go with it and don’t let anything distract you. This is all advice I am reminding myself of by the way! I am going to take a couple hours and go look at art at the DeYoung Museum this morning. Also, find a hobby. I think mine is riding my bike to the beach.

Thanks Danielle.

I believe in God. But everybody has a different belief, and as long as it furthers you in life and gives you a better perspective on the things you do in life then I don’t really care what you believe in.

I’m Thomas Putman, born in Ponca City, Oklahoma. We moved out here about a year ago from Michigan due to the fact that there is work. I didn’t have any work in Michigan and I got a little kid who needs anything and everything I can give him. I had to move out here to do that. I mean, havin’ my kid, it was time to wake up. You know, before that I did anything and everything and it didn’t matter what the consequences were afterward. But now that I have him, those thoughts pop in my head before I make a decision on anything.

Private Greg Melendez, Acoma, NM 2007 There is nothing Christian about the military. They train you to hate. You go in as the greatest guy in the world and you come out with so much anger. They put you in pits to fight each other. They put you against friends you have known forever and you have to fight them too – until they tap out or until you choke them and they pass out. I had to choke one of my friends out. I choked him so bad his nose busted and wouldn’t stop bleeding. I didn’t want to do it and I cried afterwards. They just called me names. I was born in Santa Marie, California in 1988. My dad and mom have been in and out of prison my whole life. The only real things around for me were foster homes, group homes and my grandfather– he’s a pastor. I have a wife and her name is Jessica. She was my high school sweetheart, but it hasn’t quite worked out so we’re getting a divorce. I have a seven month old daughter, Keanu. She’s beautiful. My dad kind of pushed my hand toward the military. He told me he never wanted me to end up like him. At first I didn’t really want to go, but I listened to him. I signed up when I was 17 years old. At this point, it has nothing to do with me – it has to do with my daughter. If I didn’t have her, I wouldn’t be here. I just want to support her and make sure she has a good life. I’ll do whatever it takes.

Rodney Muhammad and Laycolaion Muhammad, Dorchester, MA 2006 Let me say something to you – and this will be mind-boggling: God doesn’t have a religion. Religion is man-made. That’s why there is so much confusion on the earth. The biggest killers are those who claim religion. We kill each other over religion and we say we’re doing God a favor. It’s a lie and it’s hypocritical. God doesn’t have a religion and Islam isn’t a religion. Islam means “peace,” and one who comes in peace calls themselves a Muslim. Where do you find the temples of the nation of Islam? You find them in the worst neighborhoods where black people live, places where even the police are afraid to go. That’s where you find members of the nation of Islam. Because that’s our mission: to go into the depths of the funk and filth where our people are and try to help clean them up and bring them back onto the road of life.

NEW WORK CHRIS CHURCHILL

Terri Pierson, Buhl, ID 2007 I have a hard time when I have to shoot one, put it down ’cause it’s suffering. I have a hard time doing that, especially when you raise them from babies. When my wife was taking care of ’em they were all pets to her and, when they grew up, some of them would remember her. We used to have names for all of them. At one time we probably had about 150, they all had names and we could tell them all apart. But to most people, a cow is a cow. I figure that all our successes are due to God – and our failures too. There are a lot of times that we fail and that it is our own doing. Tomorrow, I go back to the cancer doctor for the first time since my radiation.

Priestess Miriam Shamani, New Orleans, LA 2004 At that moment I relaxed and found that all the different circumstances I moved through were just a beautiful ball of wisdom. The inspiration came into my ear, into my soul: One’s life experience is your Master Teacher. My experiences have given me an understanding of how to be a better self-creative with my life and with my time. It never discouraged me from moving forward and seeking new ways to elevate my life. In these moments of clarity you can see your Master Plan put together and still never know where or how you are going to extend it further. It’s a moment that your Master has put together. It’s a unique sequence of knowledge and activity meant just for you. So many people miss this because they become conflicted in life. They retreat into their troubles.

Engaged Muslim Couple, Madison, WI 2005

Father Grasham, Plum Island, MA 2004

AMBER: I feel very misunderstood here. I feel like people don’t really know that much about Islam and what they do know is pretty negative. They just take what they know from the media and when they see me they get upset – especially if it’s in a big crowd. They think it’s funny to say things, usually sexual comments. A few weeks ago someone pushed me. It happened at a student organization fair. I was standing next to a Muslim student association poster. She just came up and pushed me. That was the first physical contact I’ve had. BABIR: I don’t feel the brunt of it, you know, she does. I hear from her and what scares me the most is how it is for our daughters and sisters who go through these situations with no one to talk to. It’s a sad thing in America, but it happens so much it’s just something you kind of have to just get used to. Before 9/11 it was cultural stereotypes like “sand nigger” and “rag head.” But that’s different than people thinking you killed thousands of people. They dont know that we had a family member die in one of those towers.
