EAT If you’re heading out for a bite to eat or a coffee in Subi, here are our pick of the places where your pooches are most welcome to come along too.

FUR BABIES WELCOME

CAFÉ MELOGRANO

Café Café Subiaco Square Road The scarlet umbrellas outside this stalwart of the Subi café scene are a welcome sight for those in need of sustenance with pups in tow, rain, hail or shine. Café Café seems to always have a steady stream of devotees, whatever time of day you rock up. There’s a dedicated pet-friendly area for those with an extra friend to accommodate. There’s an ever-changing cabinet of fresh cakes and traybakes, as well as salads, wraps and baguettes and brunch (try the Canadian pancakes or the 4

EXPLORE SUBIACO

chilli scrambled eggs). We also love the artist-inresident art works adorning the walls – culture with your coffee makes for an uplifting time out, we say. Brunch Makers 115 Rokeby Road Colourful crockery, higgledypiggledy on top of the coffee machine make Brunch Makers a welcoming kind of place, and are a vivid contrast to the Pulp Fiction monochrome film posters on the walls. The short and sweet menu has all the usual Subi brunch suspects

BRUNCH MAKERS

– smashed avo, French toast and eggs benedict – plus some interesting additions, like halloumi and eggs and Spanish omelette. Bring a suitably photogenic dog and you can channel your inner movie star behind some shades, as you sip an espresso enigmatically and whisper “a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.” Little Rokeby Café 269 Rokeby Road On any given day, you’ll find a pack of pampered pooches, patiently waiting outside Little Rokeby as their owners drink up and enjoy brunch. There are tasty dog biscuits at the counter for these furry customers to enjoy – a nice touch if you forgot to pack their favourite snacks. For their owners inside, they may be tucking into a big bowl of fruity porridge or bircher, and the café does a brisk trade in babycinos, hot chocolates and prana chai, hand-made with black tea, whole spices, honey and ginger. Whisk Creamery 151 Rokeby Road The Subiaco temple to allthings gelato is consistently in the top five when it comes to the best milkshakes not just in town – but in Australia. The inventive creamery was also pretty much at the forefront of creating crazy-beautiful combinations of gelato and toppings beyond the sprinkles

and chocolate flakes of our collective childhoods. Choose your base ice cream (or two, or three) then add salted caramel, meringue, Nutella or custard. Go the full nine yards and smother it in gold leaf, add a unicorn motif or make it into a chocolate kebab or croinut (that’s an indulgent donut/croissant hybrid). Your dog will watch hungrily as you push the limits of what artisan soft serve in a cone or cup can reach, heights-wise. There’s a strong thread of creative flavour use at work here too – where else will you find a matcha croinut sandwich covered in choc fudge sauce, this side of Tokyo? Jaffle Shack 95 Rokeby Road

Café Melograno 67 Heytesbury Road Bring your four-legged friend along to Café Melograno, and enjoy a slice of la dolce vita. You’ll find plenty of new best friends for your favourite good boy or girl, tied to the tree outside the café, with fresh water available while you settle in for brunch or brekkie. The friendly staff aren’t lying when they say they’re ‘serving seven days a week with a smile’. The near-legendary carrot cake is always welcome and while you’re at the chilled cabinet, why not pick up a frittata, wrap or freshly-made

filled baguette? For a café that’s named after one of the most flavour-intense fruits around – the pomegranate – on one of Subi’s prettiest, tree-lined streets, we suggest you take your time and get around the Melogorano’s scrambled specials. Hole in the Wall Subiaco Arts Centre Small is beautiful and for this literal hole in the wall coffee and toastie outpost in the grounds of the Subiaco Arts Centre, is a firm favourite for animal and caffeine lovers. There’s plenty of seating

HOLE IN THE WALL

Subiaco’s Jaffle Shack has taken a favourite snack – the jaffle (or toasted sandwich) – and elevated to something of an art form. And speaking of art, if you head upstairs, you’ll find regular art exhibitions from local artists, plus a shop too. In the shack itself, there’s a cool vibe to the place which makes it the perfect spot to bring your BFF (best furry friend) and order a Vegemite and oozy mozzarella cheese jaffle, play a board game or two and try to resist ordering from the waffle menu. Don’t miss the chance to snaffle some Fatboi Brownies for later too - these chunky, artisan-style brownies will ruin you for any other version of this choccy traybake forever. EAT on the lawns of the Theatre Gardens when the weather plays ball, making it a great spot for furballs to frolic. The coffee’s locally roasted (5 Senses Coffee) and you can grab a babychino too if you’ve brought your other babies along for a visit. Smudge the rabbit (@coffeewithsmudge) has even been known to pay a visit to Hole in the Wall – and if it’s good enough for this super-friendly flop-eared bunny, it’s good enough for us.

The Cat Café Purrth is one of the city’s more unusual hang-outs, mostly because there are more felines in situ per human than you’d usually expect. If you’re missing some cuddle-time, this is the place to come, made all the more memorable if you grab one

of their handcrafted reusable cups for your cato-cino or catwhite. Over the past year, over 100,000 people have been introduced to the idea of rescue cats, rehoming their own new forever friends as a result of a visit to the Cat Café. Based on a concept from Taiwan, this carefully run social enterprise manages to make grabbing a coffee a feel-good, animal welfare-friendly experience – and you get some meow-time for a cup of Kit-tea. Head online to order tickets to spend

an hour with the resident cat family – slots are available every hour and although there are walk-ins available, spots regularly sell out.

SORGANIC SOURDOUGH BAKERY

It’s possible to eat your way around Europe from breakfast ’til closing time in Subiaco. Here’s our guide to round the clock grazing. Breaking the fast If you’re up with the lark, and have a craving for something more than an avo smash, there are plenty of places to scratch a more sophisticated brekkie itch in Subi. Now that spring’s sprung, you can pull up a chair outdoors and sit in dappled sunlight with your café au lait (that’s a flat white, mon ami), with a freshly

baked pastry from Boucla (if you’re craving an Eastern Mediterranean fix, there’s no better spot to linger). If it’s the weekend and you’ve got time to go the whole hog with a proper brunch, Sorganic Sourdough Bakery uses its fantastic 72-hour fermented authentic artisan sourdough as the basis for many of its dishes (including a knock-out steak

sandwich with homemade garlic aioli) or Brew-Ha The Ritual (Continental Flatini roll, anybody?). Refuelling on the go When it’s time for morning tea, and you’re on the run, grab a perfectly brewed espresso from Louis Baxters (which also happens to be pet-friendly and have free

wi-fi). Or if you’ve got more time on your hands, Wholefood Circus is the perfect place to browse and stock up on some deliciously healthy house-made ready meals. It’s a deli – but so much more and something of a local’s favourite. You can even pick up a bunch of fresh blooms with your Moroccan chicken. EDITION 2 | SPRING 2020

EAT CHEZ JEAN-CLAUDE PATISSERIE

Lunch like a legend Well-known for its epic brunches, colourful matchas and funky interior, 1982 Food + Coffee also does a pretty awesome lunch. If you’re channelling your inner

Coco Chanel, we recommend the Smoked Salmon Bowl or caesar salad with charcoal garlic croutons, but if you’re in a more Gerald Depardieu frame of mind, say ‘oui’ to the 1982 Brotherhood Burger LULU LA DELIZIA

or steak sandwich. For an innovative Italian feast, Lulu La Delizia is hard to beat. It’s an award-winning small eatery and wine bar specialising in the premium fresh pasta and the delights of Friuli and the Venetian spice route. Named in honour of a very special nonna, Luigia Valvasori, you’ll tuck into saffron spaghettini with clams, ‘bloody good anchovies’ in

aceto and tiramisu on any given Thursday or Friday lunchtime. Afternoon teatime Subiaco is spoiled for choice when it comes to artisan bakeries, turning out some of the most delicious sweet treats you’ll ever likely to eat. There’s the Swiss bakery - Chez Jean-Claude Patisserie on Rokeby Road which has been turning out specialities since 1997. Think delicate patisserie, unique breads and tartlettes fit for Marie Antoinette. Speaking of cute little pastries and gateaux to order, Eli and Matt’s Patisserie is another bakery worth skipping lunch for. Their High Coffee was such a hit during the recent Subi Coffee Series that they’ve decided to continue the concept for the foreseable future. Tuck into a chicken club, coffee scones

and coffee-inspired desserts, with a coffee on the side. Post work nibbles Head to Refuge Small Bar and, thanks to its decidedly Euro-vibes outdoor seating area, you could be sipping a house-made Aperol Spritz with a share board of cheese and charcuterie before you can say ‘viva Italia!’ Choose from a tart and sour Gorgonzola or subtle Manchego cheese, a slice or two of chorizo pan-

fried in cider or go the whole hog - literally - with some Jamon Serrano, aged for a year and a half. Dinner à deux If those after dinner drinks have stretched into a night on the town with your amore, why not head to Juanita’s for a perfectly-made parfait or terrine to get you in the mood for more? DRINK

Sloane Carvell does the continental, and finds Subi has plenty to offer Euro-philes in search of a chic tipple or two. SUBIACO HAS A perhaps surprisingly multicultural dining scene and plenty of options when it comes to exploring a little of Europe without leaving the state. Ahead of UnWined, WA’s food and drink festival, I explore some of the cosmopolitan options in Subi to enjoy a sip of Europe without the airfare. Dilly Dally With an Italian-inspired menu focusing on pizzas and share plates, it’s the perfect spot for a sneaky 10 EXPLORE SUBIACO

drink and snack or a big Sunday lunch. The wine list is heavy on Italian stallions, so this is the place to explore the best of their robust greats like chianti, barbera and nebbiolo. Chianti is made predominantly with the sangiovese grape and is sometimes blended with other varieties, it smells and tastes like you’d imagine an afternoon on the streets of Napoli would and is the perfect pizza wine. Its bright sour cherry and savoury notes and high acidity make it THE perfect match to stand up to tomato-based sauces in pasta and on pizzas. Petite Mort Petite Mort serves up French cuisine and is dedicated

to degustation. Its wine list includes French and Australian wines, however it’s a must-visit for Champagne. With showstoppers like the fifth generation Champagne producer Veuve Fourny & Fils on the wine list, you’ll feel like you’re dining in 6th Arrondissement with views of Le Tour Eiffel. There are

also cheeky aperitifs like a Kir Royale for that extra je ne sais quoi. Bistro Felix If you’ve got a penchant for modern European dishes produced with flair, Bistro Felix should be on your radar. With spring in the air, you might like to start

with a Pimms Potion or Negroni from their cocktail list in the sunshine on the verandah. Dining en plein air (that’s outside to you and me) couldn’t be more cosmopolitan and we’re all for it. With a varied Mediterranean and Australian wine list why not move on to their beef tartare or chicken

liver parfait and crisps, washed down with a flinty French chablis, or a grenache blend rosé from Rioja in Spain. The world is your oyster, it turns out, without leaving 6008. Refuge Small Bar The ‘little bar that could’ should be Refuge’s alter-

ego. Its perhaps surprisingly Euro-focused wine list includes drops from Veneto and Piedmont in Italy’s lush north as well as a crisp rose from Aix-en-Provence. There is a zesty Prosecco again from the Veneto region, or if you’re really pushing the bateau out, a bottle of Carnard Duchene Cuvee Leonie for $85 will hit the right spot. Beer lovers with a penchant for something altogether more sophisticated than a can of VB won’t be disappointed either. There’s a Belgian brew – Geuze Mariage Parfait Lambic – from Lambeek, giving the type of beer its name. Or for something really unusual and fruity, try the La Sirene Biere De Cerise - it’s blended from French oak barriques using whole cherries.

local hero

LA DOLCE VITA Winemaker and soon-to-be-bar owner Larry Cherubino chose Subiaco 20 years ago and hasn’t looked back. BY GAIL WILLIAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANCES ANDRJICH

FOR TWO DECADES now, Larry Cherubino’s swarthy Adriatic charm has added splashes of colour and vibrancy to Subiaco, a place which – like him – has strong Italian connections. Since buying into one of the suburb’s leafiest streets in 2000, the award-winning winemaker has maintained a congenial family presence on the Rokeby Road strip he proudly champions as “our high street”. With their three cherubic mop-topped boys in tow he and wife, Edwina, are often glimpsed on regular strolls through Kings Park, enjoying 14 EXPLORE SUBIACO

the souffra cake at Boucla or kicking back over a Saturday morning coffee at Community Coffee Co. For Cherubino it’s a welcome respite from his day job. That’s roaring around on his motor bike through vines in Frankland River and Wilyabrup, just two southern destinations where he plies the wine-making flair which earned him and his wineries a string of national gongs and inspired revered wine writer James Halliday to call him a genius. Now, Cherubino, who as a youth tasted his first home made wine in his Italian grandfather’s shed, is drawing

on his heritage to add a generous wallop of European style to Rokeby Road. Cherubino’s City Cellar – a wine bar and bottle shop with a private dining room and tasting area – will soon open in a 200sqm warehouse space above Subiaco’s most popular foodlovers’ haunt, Simon Johnson Providore. It’s a food and wine marriage made in …. heaven? No, make that paradiso. After all, the suburb was named by Benedictine monks who travelled here from Subiaco in Italy in 1851, planted olive and fruit trees and set up their monastery.

And the Italian heritage lives on in wine tastings which will include plenty of Italian drops along with others from the Margaret River and Great Southern regions. And a good smattering of Cherubino’s own labels of course – AD Hoc, The Yard, Laissez Faire, Pedestal, Apostrophe and Cherubino. A bonus will be cooking demonstrations by Cherubino’s Calabrian born mother, Natalana, who came to Australia as a child and is also a proud Subi resident. Some of the food offerings will be dishes remembered fondly from her childhood,

[cherubino] is drawing on his heritage to add a generous wallop of European style to Rokeby Road recipes from her cookbooks – La Rocca and Summer in Calabria. Finishing touches are currently being applied for the anticipated opening in late October, early November. And there will be no shortage of Simon Johnson customers who will share access to the staircase entry at the rear of the providore’s interior. Cherubino says his City Cellar will be the Perth counterpart of his Caves Road tasting facility of Larry Cherubino Wines in Wilyabrup using the same casual approach to pairing good food and wine. “With Simon Johnson being downstairs, it is a natural progression for us to come together for things like wine and cheese nights and champagne and caviar tastings,” says Cherubino. “Also, we will not just have Cherubino wines on offer but we see it more as a promotion for the wines from the Margaret River and Great Southern regions. And there will be a big Italian wine offering as well.”

HERE’S CHERUBINO’S PROUD TAKE ON HIS BELOVED SUBI: What do you love about Subi? We chose Subi because it is central, close to the coast and to the city. We love the village vibe which makes the place. You get a good mix of people, across all demographics and you have some real characters here. And we love the character of the architecture – a mix of the old and new. We have made a lot of friends through Subi Primary School. Your favourite breakfast spot? Boucla, for the souffra cake. We have been going there for the past 15 years. The new owners are lovely. Your favourite coffee hangout? Community Coffee. The fact that it is out the back, down a laneway makes it interesting. Fave weekend activity? Chilling out in the garden. Because we

are up and down from south so much it is a great wind down thing to do. I like shopping at Farmer Jack’s where you can get everything you need. It’s a winner. It’s sort of our Boat Shed market really. Where will we find you on date night? Lulu’s, Lady of Ro and Pizza at Delisio Pizza Romana. They’re all great. Hidden secrets? Well, I think everyone knows about Souvlaki Friday at Community Coffee. It starts at lunchtime and you just rock up and they have a spit roast out the front of the café. Wouldn’t miss that for anything. Also, the Gloster Street Halloween party. We have done that for quite a few years. You wander down the street with a glass of wine and enjoy the trick and treats. It is a great community thing.

What’s your go-to place for a morning coffee in Subiaco? What do you always order? How to pick? Meeting for a pre-work coffee I choose Milk’d because it’s open nice and early. You’re planning a special dinner in Subi - what’s your ultimate place to mark an occasion? I’m a sucker for good Middle Eastern faire, so I’ll say Meeka. It’s the perfect cuisine to share with friends in the mood to celebrate. Cocktail time! Where do you head for an afterwork sundowner - and what’s your poison? I’ve attended a lot of afterwork sundowners in Subi over the years but my all-time favourite is Juanita’s. It was introduced to me by my sister who works for Ipsos on

Barker Road; they do amazing wines by the amazing glass. Select a good salmon-hued rose that’s earthy rather than sweet, and I’ll be a happy girl. You’ve got Piper the pooch in tow - where would you go for a sit in the sun and a coffee to go? Subi Farmer’s Market of course! I heard it once said there are sometimes more dogs than people, and that is a-okay with me. And don’t worry my handbag is always stuffed full with little yellow bags.
