DILLY DALLY

Bloody French 279 Rokeby Road Call 0432 701 909 or email bloodyfrench279@yahoo.com

Leave it to the French to create winter warmers with a certain je ne sais quoi. Confit of duck croquettes (little savoury torpedoes of full-on flavour) kick a winter feast off at Bloody French in style. Then it’s off to the south of France for an authentic seafood bouillabaisse. If you prefer a hearty stew to see off the cold, try the coq au vin, served the traditional way with mushrooms and a side of roast potatoes. Their raclette is justly famous, but if 4

all that still doesn’t warm the cockles of your heart, then snuggle up near the fireplace in this welcoming bistro. Très bien.

Petite Mort 225 Onslow Road Shenton Park Call 08 9388 0331 or email contact@petitemort.net.au

Bring your appetite for Petite Mort’s nine-course signature menu if you’re still kidding yourself that lockdown has had no effect on your waistline. Or go a little lighter and choose the five-course Le Saveur menu. Cauliflower veloute with whipped brie

and parmesan eases you into this epic masterclass in Franco-Australasian relations. You’ll feast on whole lamb with beetroot and capers, kangaroo fillet, pork jowl and a comforting PETITE MORT

carpet of smoked butter beans before succumbing to your sweet fate with Death by Chocolate. If you’re keen to replicate this style of indulgence at home, order the Petite Mort At Home menu.

Dilly Dally 87 Rokeby Road Call 08 6228 1986 or email info@dillydally.com.au

Taking over the spot in Subi which once housed venerable dining favourite, The Witch’s Cauldron, Dilly Dally already feels like an old friend. From

your comfy pants and order bistecca – a 250g sirloin with potato and mushrooms, done the way they like it in Firenze. Chef Peter Hadju can also put together some of his ‘favourite bits’ in a shared collection of seasonal specials from the menu ($58 per person).

the team behind Lalla Rookh, you know you’ll be in safe hands. A warm terracotta façade gives way to some oldfashioned Italian dolce vita, with a modern twist. Choose from a short and sharp menu which covers Nibbly Bits (mozzarella and soft herb arancini) or Bigger Bits (grilled prawns, white beans and saltbush). If you want a long weekend blow-out, wear

Don’t Miss . . . 1982 Food + Coffee Shop 3/1 Rokeby Road Call 0431 100 919 or email 1982foodncoffee@gmail.com If it’s a hearty breakfast you’re after to stave off those frosty winter chills, head over to 1982 Food + Coffee. They’ve got Morning Burgers (which we completely endorse, by the way - burgers all day is our mantra), with a charcoal brioche bun, BBQ pulled pork, avocado, bacon, chipotle mayo, a fried egg and a potato nugget. If you insist on treating your body like a temple but secretly admit that the temple in turn worships food, we recommend the chai-infused porridge. It’s packed full of all the good stuff (you know, slowburning whatnot to keep you going throughout the day) plus freeze-dried mandarins, honey, coconut and a lovely rasp of gingerbread crumb. There are veggie plates too – sautéed mixed greens with beetroot hummus, lupin and linseed toast and crushed nuts, and thyme-roasted mushrooms. Even just reading that means you’re about 100% more healthy so just imagine eating it. Also check out the coffee (and if you want more of this particular beverage, read on as we suggest places to nab yourself the best cosy cuppas). Who said winter was all ugly sweaters and daggy socks? Mug shot

There’s nothing more comforting than a big cup of frothy coffee or a hot chocolate, complete with cream and marshmallows, oozing over the top of the mug. We’ve got the lowdown on where to bunker down with a comforting cuppa. LITTLE ROKEBY CAFÉ

Architects & Heroes Shop 25, 25 Rokeby Road

This little gem on the main Rokeby Road drag is a good spot to start your exploration of Subi’s tea and coffee scene. There’s an interesting collection of teas on offer (including vibrant herbal blends and kombucha) and the baristas are this side of expert. You can order an espresso tasting flight, which introduces you to a collection of three single origin

espressos and also take home (or have delivered) Kenyan coffee beans from Code Black Coffee. The Spanish eggs are pretty good too, if you’re keen for a nourishing feed.

BLACKLIST COFFEE ROASTERS

Blacklist Coffee Roasters 439D Hay Street

Speaking of coffee beans, the Blacklist concept store curates rare and high-end single origin beans for coffee lovers. We do things a little differently, says the team at ARCHITECTS & HEROES

“if that floats your boat, join the blacklist club” 6

BOUCLA

TAKE YOUR PICK Subiaco’s cafe scene has something for even the most eclectic of tastes, from rare coffee bean roasts and herbal teas to bespoke waffles and puppy-friendly venues.

Blacklist. “Dine-in customers are charged $9 per person and once seated, you are invited to taste a range of our blends and single origins.” It’s an innovative approach to introducing people to different coffees and brew methods which may be unfamiliar. If that floats your boat, then join the Blacklist Club and you’ll have unlimited entry to the store. It’s also the place to go to if you’re after brewing equipment or, of course, your own takeaway jar, like Panama Geisha Ether (with its flavours of red wine, raspberry and hints of chocolate and blueberry).

Boucla 349 Rokeby Road

This Mediterranean-inspired coffee and cake gem would be just as at home on the streets of Istanbul, Nice or

Naples. There are tapestries and intricate artworks, jars of Turkish delight and a shabby chic aesthetic which encourages risqué conversations and shared secrets. Justly loved for their beautiful range of sweet eats (baklava and soufra are particularly delectable) and breakfast items like Turkish egg and garlic yoghurt, take your time and enjoy a bracing Turkish coffee or full-to-thebrim cappuccino.

Little Rokeby Café

For their owners inside, as they may be tucking into a big bowl of fruity porridge or bircher, the café does a brisk trade in baby cinos, hot chocolates and prana chai, handmade with black tea, whole spices, honey and ginger.

Little Cultures 51 Rokeby Road

We’re not sure why nobody has thought of combining saintly wholefoods with

devilish desserts in one unique place before, but we’re sure glad they did. Little Cultures sources its coffee from speciality local roaster, Twin Peas, and all its teas are organically sourced too. They serve superfood smoothies and design-your own-yoghurt bowls, but it’s not all activated charcoal and goji berries. If all that goodness makes you crave for something, well, naughty, then may we suggest a waffle cup with caramel popcorn and Oreos? Why not go the full devil and add a shot of maple syrup and a scattering of Gummy Bears too? Being bad never felt so good. LITTLE ROKEBY CAFÉ

269 Rokeby Road

On any given Saturday or Sunday, you’ll find a pack of pooches outside Little Rokeby Café, patiently waiting for their owners to drink up and continue taking them for a walk. There are even dog biscuits at the counter for these furry customers to enjoy. EDITION 1 | WINTER 2020

SHAKE IT OFF

BEV & NIC’S BEAUTY ESSENTIALS: The #iso top five

No one’s skin loved being in isolation because everyone ate all of the snacks and drank all of the wine, while pretending to exercise at home. Try these skin and hair saviours and in no time at all you’ll get your glow back… Dermalogica Age Smart Multi-Vitamin Thermafoliant - $84 Nic: I tried this one to scrub off those COVID and winter woolies feels. I loved the super fine granules and the warm tingly sensation of the scrub – but most of all I love the squeaky clean smooth result. I have really sensitive skin and this scrub was not too abrasive and gentle on my allergies too.

The grand old lady of Subiaco – the Regal Theatre – has been part of Kim Knight’s life since she was seven years old. Now as the venue’s general manager, she’s looking forward to curtain up once more.

Regal by name, regal by nature THE REGAL THEATRE has been something of a second home to Kim Knight, its current general manager. She would sit quietly in the back lounge with her brother while her parents worked in the theatre, earning an early wage as kids to date stamp the old hard copy tickets at home after school. “We earned $10 a set for shows like Wogs Out of Work, Dame Edna and many musicals,” says Kim. “When I was old enough I started working as an usherette and also worked in the box office for many years.” Despite taking a break to travel and start a family, the lure of the greasepaint proved too much, and Kim has now been running the theatre, situated on the corner of Hay Street and Rokeby Road, for ten years. Built on the site of the former Coliseum Open Air Gardens cinema in 1938, the Regal Theatre was named after King George VI who had recently ascended the throne. Its gorgeous Art Deco design 10 EXPLORE SUBIACO

has retained much of its original charm, including the old Crying Room, at the back of the auditorium. “Mums could sit or settle their babies here while still being able to watch and hear the movie through a glass partition,” says Kim. “I also really love our dressing room performance space, The Chorus Room, which comes alive for the Perth Comedy Festival. It’s nothing flash but is full of charm complete with a really cool Art Deco mural on the back wall.” Since COVID-19 hit, the stage has fallen silent at the Regal, and as yet, there is no firm date for its reopening. However, Kim has tentatively booked some shows for the end of the year. “As we are a 1,000-seat venue, we would really need to be looking at over 500 seats for promoters to come back. I feel that live theatre has a very special place for so many people and cannot ever be replaced with a home theatre or live streamed

Did you know… performances,” says Kim. “I know I can’t wait to go and see a live band, a dance show or some comedy.” When the Regal is up and running again, theatre-goers can enjoy a drink in the Attic Bar (with profits going back into the restoration and refurbishment of the building), or enjoy a meal at one of the many nearby restaurants or cafes in Subi. “The Regal Theatre Foundation is held in trust for the people of WA, and we’ve recently upgraded the seating in the auditorium, repainted both the foyers and auditorium, and installed new carpet, flooring and electrical upgrades.” Kim’s wish-list for further improvements is yet to be exhausted but one thing can never be improved upon – and that’s the place the Regal has in many Western Australian’s hearts. “I love what the theatre gives to people, the experience people have when they come into the Regal

There are numbers along the skirting boards in the foyer. They were for parents, who would leave their baby in the pram, park it next to one of the numbers in the foyer, and go in to watch the film. It would be the ushers’ job to watch over the babies while the parents enjoyed the show.

from the moment they enter through the doors to the time the show’s over,” she says. “We want people to leave feeling warm and fuzzy, like a big hug from your nanna.” With a team who she considers “family”, Kim rightly considers the Regal to be a “very special place.” “We are very proud to be called the theatre for the people, we have so much on offer from comedy, ballet, musicals, dance, theatre there really is something for everyone.”
