Barack Hussein Obama was born on August 4, 1961. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father was a black man from Kenya. His mother was a white woman from Kansas. His parents met while attending the University of Hawaii. Barack was two years old when his parents separated. His father moved back to Kenya. His mother married a man from Indonesia. They had one daughter. Barack moved to Indonesia with his mom, stepfather, and half-sister. He was six years old.

twelfth grade. As he got older, he realized he was a different color than the people in his family. Many of his friends were a different color, too. This sometimes confused him. It also helped him make friends of many races. Barack graduated from Columbia University in 1983. He studied politics. He also studied how the United States works with other countries. Barack began working for an American company that did business with other countries. He decided to move to Chicago in 1985. He helped local churches begin programs for the poor. Barack graduated from Harvard in 1991. He graduated with honors. This was a great accomplishment! He moved back to Chicago. He became very busy. He encouraged people to vote. He worked for a law firm that helped protect people’s rights. He also began teaching law at a college.

They have two daughters, Malia and Natasha. He became the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. It is an important journal written by students.

In 1996 Barack became even busier. He was elected an Illinois state senator! While senator, he Hard work raised funds to pays It sure off! does! help families who did not make much money. He also worked to help poor families afford to go to the doctor. In 2000 Barack ran for the U.S. House of Representatives. He did not win the election. He ran for state senate again in 2002 and won. In 2004 Illinois voters elected him to the U.S. Senate. He was the only African American person serving in the U.S. Senate. He was only the fifth black U.S. senator ever! In 2004 Barack gave a speech on television. It was at a meeting called the Democratic National Convention. He told Americans that it was important to get along with one another. Many politicians and other people liked what he said. He decided to run for president of the United States. In 2008, Americans elected Barack as the first African American president! And in 2009, President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize!
