Gallup High School

By Kathy Polich It is almost spring, for many that equals baseball Class of 1968’s 51st Reunion season. For some of the lucky locals, a trip to Phoenix to soak up some sun and attend MLB 1966, 1967 invited spring training games is just around the corner. A higher number of folks in the area will spend We are Seniors! We are GREAT!! We’re the Class of’68!!! springtime hiding from the wind in cars, while their kiddos endure the typical New Mexico weather June 28-29 2019 on Gallup’s baseball fields! I can already feel the dirt grinding in my teeth as I envision cheering on my own Bengal and Desert Dawg! I cannot even estimate how many games I will sit through this season. I will enjoy each one, especially as I take a moment to reflect on how fast my boys are growing and how our summers together at the ball park are FRIDAY EVENING: Registration - Meet and Greet NO HOST BAR Gallup High School Class of 1968 51st Reunion depleting rapidly. There’s No Crying In Baseball ... 34 March 2019

kid’s face! Sadly, I too have trod the waters in some of the categories mentioned above.

Now let me give you some of my credentials as a self-proclaimed Hobby Sports Psychologist. Besides the apparent 25 years of observing parents as a coach and teacher, I have some other training. I love me some Dr. Phil. When I engage in banter with one of my teenagers, I often hear Dr. Phil’s voice saying, “Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?” Eckhart Tolle, Kahlil Gibran, and Miguel Ruiz line my bookshelf. Do all these things make me a better baseball parent than most of the crowd? Nope, not at all. It does make me feel a bit guilty after I yell something like, “Hey Blue, open your eyes!” Especially, when the umpire in question is my son or one of his teenage buddies learning the game! I’m asking for your help. If you catch me doing that, lean over and whisper, “There’s no crying in baseball!”

The area that I struggle with the most is watching the broken families bicker at the park. I can only imagine the pressure on an 8-year-old walking up to the plate hearing his parents fighting behind the dugout. I have credentials in this area too! There are a bazillion reasons why my ex-husband and I got divorced. There are two teenage reasons we put all that aside and cheer our boys on together. I’m a sarcastic, grudge-holding cowgirl, with just enough Croatian blood to be a little feisty. If I can travel to Puerto Rico and Seattle on baseball trips with my ex, I think most people should be able to handle a 90-minute game. Believe me, those trips had episodes that weren’t fun for either of us. We often reminded each other, “There’s no crying in baseball!” But hey, it was totally worth it. My 13-year-old recently told me he appreciates that if something is important to him that his parents can both be there! I’m going to do my best not to be a cry baby parent. At home, I will support the coach. At the field, I’ll encourage - not coach. I’ll try not to harass the umps! Remember, you are in this with me. But, you may have to remind me, “There’s no crying in baseball!”
