DEBUT READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS 2024 ‘Best Of’ McKinley County
Welcome all to the Gallup Sun’s debut Readers’ Choice Awards winners tab, featuring the inaugural Gallup Citizen of the Year Award recipient Greg Kirk. Please, take a moment to read his story and prepare to be inspired. Greg, innately humble, deserves this honor. To further honor Greg, he will receive a plaque and a gift basket.
The Sun looks forward to next year’s Citizen of the Year nomination process. It’s truly a rewarding experience, and it was a joy to read over the numerous nomination applications that we received.
In February, we opened the nomination process to the public to vote for their favorite businesses online, and in the weekly paper, in over 60 different categories. Once we tallied up the write-in nominees, up to five for each category, we rolled out the finalists list. Voters could only select one favorite business from each category.
And voters were only allowed to vote one time. Thanks to modern tracking, no voter manipulation occurred, so the results are true and accurate.
Also, a big thanks to each and every reader that participated in the voting process. It’s truly appreciated, and the Sun plans to move forward with a second annual “Best Of” with some changes and category expansions.
Horizon Plumbing and Prohibition 37 participated in the Sun’s “Awesome Package” program, which includes fun and easy to read “get to know your local business” profiles.
We look forward to the continued growth of the McKinley County business community. Please, also take time to review the list of winners and honorable mentions. Congratulate the staff ! Patronize these businesses and even the businesses that didn’t make the final cut. It’s important more than ever to shop locally!
CONGRATULATIONS READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS WINNERS!
By Bill Lee CEO Gallup-McKinley Chamber of CommerceIwant to take a moment to thank the community for taking the time to participate in the Gallup Sun’s inaugural Readers’ Choice Awards.
Moreover, I want to extend a big congratulations to Citizen of the Year Greg Kirk, for his dedication and service to the community. It’s essential to honor those who selflessly give of their time to help others.
Gallup is a fantastic community, and I can’t emphasize enough the importance of celebrating and honoring our local businesses. At the Gallup-McKinley Chamber of Commerce, we dedicate our time and energy helping businesses to succeed through our programs.
We’re lucky to have such a broad and diverse array of services in a small city such as Gallup. Even parts outside of the city have a great selection. Great options abound, from restaurants to trading posts — there’s something for everyone in McKinley County.
At the Chamber, economic development plays a vital role in what we do on a daily basis to help businesses.
The economic health of a community is only as good as the jobs provided by local businesses. When we spend money at a local business, we’re supporting local residents, who in turn spend their money in our community. It creates a vibrancy that’s difficult to place into words, but essential for continued economic growth.
Please, patronize the businesses in this edition and beyond. And always “Shop Local!”

Best of Gallup: Horizon Enterprises Plumbing and Heating
By Molly Ann Howell Managing EditorGallup citizens have spoken, and Horizon Enterprises Plumbing and Heating is the area’s best heating and cooling company.
Silvano Corral has been working in the trade industry for almost all his life. He started studying HVAC systems, plumbing, and electrical systems at the age of 13 while his dad was running his own business in Gallup.
BUSINESS ROOTS
Silvano left the family business in 2010 to start his own company, and Horizon Enterprises Plumbing and Heating was born. Corral remembers those early days fondly when it was just him and his then-girlfriend-nowwife Jessica driving around in a van with only a milk crate and a tool bag to hold all his supplies.
Over a decade later, the Corrals have learned a lot about business. Silvano said he’s truly learned how to work smarter, not harder.
“When I worked at my dad’s [company] I wanted to be the biggest and the
“I’ve never liked soccer but watching them play and enjoy that has made me appreciate the sport more and learn about it so I can know what’s going on,” he said.
In his free time, Silvano hikes and rides mountain bikes.
THANKING HIS STAFF
best,” he said. “You get all that stuck in your head, and then after stumbling and dusting yourself off and picking up again, you realize you want to do what you can within your own means and grow smart. You have to walk before you can run.”
He said his favorite part about plumbing and working on HVAC systems is making customers happy.
“I love the reactions,” he said. “When people get new air conditioning units, they’re like, ‘Oh my god, I’ve never slept so good before with the old system.’ That
brings me joy. I love that every day’s different. Every day brings a whole new set of challenges, and I like solving problems.”
BEING A PART OF THE COMMUNITY
When Silvano and Jessica aren’t working, they give back to the Gallup community.
Silvano is on the finance committee for Sacred Heart Cathedral and the board for the Gallup Community Center. He’s also the Vice President of the Gallup-McKinley County Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors.
The family doesn’t plan on leaving Gallup anytime soon; they’re here to stay and grow.
“We have plans to keep growing,” Silvano said. “We’re going to stay in the area and invest in the area. We love giving back to the youth and the community, either through sponsorships or donations or volunteering time on boards.”
The couple has four daughters, ranging from the ages of 8 to 18. Silvano has coached them all in softball. He’s even taken up soccer because his daughters love it.
Horizon Enterprises Plumbing and Heating won the Best Heating & Cooling Company award in the Sun’s debut Readers’ Choice Awards.
Silvano credited his staff, saying the company wouldn’t have won the award without them.
“[This award] shows that all the work and training that we do with our teams pays off,” Silvano said. “It wasn’t just my wife and myself, it was all of us that made us get to where we are and continue to grow. We wouldn’t be anywhere without our team.”

‘Gallup’s been good to me, so I want to be good to it’By Molly Ann Howell Managing Editor
Anyone driving around Gallup on a weekend might find Greg Kirk on the side of the road, picking up trash. He may also be at a local high school sports game, assisting any kids who may be feeling sore or dealing with an injury.
That’s just who Greg is. He helps people, both at his job as a physical therapist at Enchantment Physical Therapy and as someone who leads cleanup crews around Gallup.
Many people nominated Greg for the Sun’s first Citizen of the Year award because of his community service.
In a nomination letter, Jon Dayton spoke about Greg’s selflessness. Dayton and Greg went to elementary school together in Gallup and have been friends ever since.
“You will never see him taking any credit, or patting himself on the back for all of the things he does for our community,” Dayton said. “He even still drives his father’s old pickup truck that means the world to him.”
WORKING AS A PHYSICAL THERAPIST
Greg has been a physical therapist for almost 24 years. He started his career at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital, where he met fellow physical therapist Anthony Arviso.
‘Citizen of the Year’ Greg Kirk champions community cleanup, sports, health
Arviso left RMCH in 2006 to start Enchantment Physical Therapy and asked Greg to join him in 2010. Arviso said one of the things that makes Greg a great physical therapist is his willingness to listen to his patients.
“Unlike many of the other therapists we’ve worked with over the years, Greg has a great understanding of the local community,” Arviso said. “He knows how to make people feel comfortable so that they can explain their issues and he takes his time to listen to people. The easy thing for a good
therapist like Greg is to learn techniques, and different tools of the trade, and when you combine that with his ability to get along with people, that makes a world of difference because all therapists know techniques, but very few take the time to make a patient feel comfortable.”
Greg said one of his favorite parts of his job is helping student athletes. He volunteers his time with local schools, helping students achieve their best in sports by making sure they stay healthy—and he doesn’t charge them a cent.
Greg Kirk stands with mountain bike crew in 2019. His son stands at the second to the right. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Greg Kirk“It’s something I get a great enjoyment from, treating athletes for free,” he said. “How I ask them to reward me is ‘Go win. Go represent Gallup. Bring back a victory to our hometown. That’s how you can repay me.’”
He was a student athlete himself, and he said he was inspired by the three physical therapists who often worked with him: David Havelick, Jim Jones, and Kendra Snearly.
“They were physical therapists here in town, and they basically inspired me to be a P.T.,” Greg explained. “It was through their love and their hope that they instilled in me that I could achieve things in life and even in the athletic realm. They always got me back in the game, and they never doubted me.”
HIS PASSION FOR MOTORBIKES
When he’s not helping people feel better, Greg splits his time between his family and being outdoors.
He has ridden motorbikes since he was a kid and manages the Gallup OffHighway Vehicle Park, which is located on Hasler Valley Road. He also brought another off -roading experience to Gallup with the non-profi t organization Red Rock Motor Sports Club.
Former Gallup Mayor Jackie McKinney spent a lot of time in his younger years at the local motocross track. He befriended Greg’s dad over their love for the sport, and, in turn, watched Greg grow up. He praised Greg for his work surrounding the sport.
“His starting of the Red Rock Motor Sports group has been instrumental in keeping the motorcycling industry and the thrill of racing alive,” McKinney said.
CLEANING UP THE COMMUNITY
Greg’s love for the outdoors doesn’t end with motorbikes. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking the trails surrounding Gallup.
“I think we have some of the best trails around, and I want to share them with people,” he said. “I want our hometown to be proud of what they have and truly understand the magnitude of what I see, feel, and believe in.”
Greg spends a lot of his time cleaning up those trails and the general Gallup area. He and a group of other people, whom he calls his “cleanup crew,” go out around town and pick up trash on the side of the road.
“He is truly the ambassador of our trail systems in Gallup and surrounding areas,” Dayton said. “Not only does he serve on planning committees that have secured our many trail systems to be enjoyed for generations to come, but he also spends numerous hours out on these trails cleaning and maintaining them. It is always a treat to see him out there enjoying the trails with friends and the many dogs he and his family graciously rescue and foster.”
In addition to the clean-up work he does on his own time, Kirk is also the co-chair of Keep Gallup Clean and Beautiful, an organization that tries to improve and beautify Gallup. They host Earth Day events every year, gathering people together to pick up trash.
His wife Jenifer, who also nominated him for the Citizen of the Year award, said Greg is almost always outside cleaning up litter.
“Eighty-five percent of the time if you’re driving down any road in Gallup, and you see someone dressed like a homeless person and picking up trash, most likely it’s Greg,” Jenifer said jokingly. “He’s always trying to make Gallup beautiful; he’s always doing something for his community.”
When asked about why he spends his free time cleaning up the community, Kirk had one simple thing to say.
“Gallup’s been good to me, so I want to be good to it,” he said.

Challenging the cannabis stigma
Best of Gallup: Prohibition 37
ABy Cody Begaye Contributing Editorpril 1, 2022 marked a turning point for New Mexico for both retailers and users of recreational marijuana. Following the passage of House Bill 2 in 2021, adult-use cannabis sales began the following year and led to an additional $300 million in sales in its first year.
Retailers could legally grow and set up licensed dispensaries across the state. Existing retailers could now operate with fewer restrictions on what they could grow and sell. One of those dispensaries, Prohibition 37, was named by Sun readers as one of the Best of Gallup.
BUSINESS HISTORY
Named in reference to The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, a U.S. federal law that effectively criminalized possession and distribution of marijuana, Prohibition 37, through the Gallup branch located at 1005 E. Hwy. 66, has received acclaim for its Cannabis Dispensary Menu as well as its efforts to educate users on the methods of safely consuming cannabis as well the benefits it can bring.
Since first opening as the Red Barn Gallup Dispensary in 2010, the business has cultivated its spot in the community. This is something
that Prohibition 37 Manager Casey Brown appreciates and believes is best represented by the public
recognition that the dispensary, also referred to as P37, has received since it was rebranded in July.
“There are a multitude of things that come with [accolades]. We showcase some strains in the backspace, which led to recognition and awards,” Brown said. “There is the New Mexico Cannabis Cup, where we won multiple divisions in 2023 and 2024, and some of our fl owers were also highlighted in the Growers Cannabis Cup.”
The accolades are for the team of about 10 staffers that operate the storefront as well as the production and cultivation areas behind Kim’s Imports Plus next door. The greenhouses are actually visible from the street.
Brown said the team’s dedication is clear through the work they do at P37.
“We have a whole army of us that are a team of cannabis enthusiasts,” Brown said. “We’ll have someone packing pre-rolls or flowers, making sure the building is being treated right. Everyone here shares that equality of teamwork and what we do comes through in the expertise in the cannabis industry.”
LEARNING ABOUT CANNABIS
The longest lasting form of cannabis use has been rolling it and smoking it, but decades of cultivating and use has resulted in
numerous new methods. Cannabis can now be consumed through vaporizers, concentrates, edibles, topicals, and more.
Cannabis has long been depicted in recreational settings and has garnered a negative stigma as a result of its effects that include changes in both emotional and mental states.
But the growing shift toward medical usage has Brown hoping that cultivators can change that stigma and show there can be benefits and justifications for safe cannabis consumption.
“The Google reviews are from regular customers who are looking for additive medicine, an alternative medicine to their lives,” Brown explained. “They want something adventurous or in a new focus area
to venture into that’s in a different space of their mind.”
Brown gave an example of a customer going through cancer or dialysis treatments that place a high physical strain on their body. They can take medicinal cannabis to reduce their cortisone levels and help them deal with their health challenges.
WHERE EVERYONE KNOWS YOU
With medicinal usage in mind, Brown also emphasized that P37 staff are well-versed in the products they sell and want to know their customers so they can provide the best, safest product for them.
“Our staff go above and beyond. They give personalized recommendations to customers, they educate them about cannabis, and they do everything to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere in the shop,” Brown said.
He likened the mood in P37 to
the T.V. show Cheers wherein a customer could enter and know everyone inside.
“We also take into consideration HIPAA and customer rights. We understand their needs and what they’re looking for,” Brown added. “Then for repeat customers, we have loyalty programs, we hold special events. We’re big on helping them and take pride in that.”
Brown described their customer base as “diverse,” ranging from different age groups to both new and experienced cannabis users. With more research avenues available today, the customers have become more involved in the purchasing process and are also doing their part to lessen the negative image of cannabis use.
“You know, a cannabis shop like P37, it takes a lot to open the door and step into it,” Brown said. “Everyone looks at the industry
differently. But our customers feel more comfortable coming inside. They leave feeling good and satisfied with their purchases.”
THANKING THE COMMUNITY
Brown wanted to thank the customer base for their continued support as well as the Sun for giving them an opportunity to highlight their store.
“It’s good to know this deal was initiated by the community. We’re on the holistic, medicinal side of wellness. We represent a company that then represents a community that wants that nice way of finding a healthy balance in life,” Brown said.
