County starts work on voters’ mandate supporting liquor tax VOTE TO COME IN DECEMBER

he McKinley C o u n t y B o a r d of Commissioners heard a presentation regarding a new ordinance involving the Liquor Excise Tax at their Nov. 19 meeting.

“The ordinance was voted for during the Nov. 5 election,” Lori Parra, director of the McKinley County Community Services Department, said.

“This ordinance is in effect for t h ree yea r s f rom t he approval date.”

maximum amount of six percent, as allowed by state law.

The tax revenue would then be used for the purpose of funding education programs and the prevention and treatment of alcoholism and drug abuse in McKinley County, according to the ballot.

In a 2018 study, the New Mexico Department of Health found that increasing the Liquor Excise Tax has been shown to decrease drinking, particularly with underage drinkers.

Seventy-nine percent of votes were for the ordinance and 21 percent were against it, Decker said.

Then he turned his attention to how to make the ordinance a reality.

Reports by the LeaderHerald in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and K ARE11, an NBC station in Minneapolis, say scam callers are attempting to elicit financial and other personal information from veterans. Callers may tell vets there is a new type of veterans benefit related to home loans.

use caller ID spoofing to deceive their intended victims.

The scammers often leave voice messages, following a script that goes something like this: “Your VA profile was flagged for two potential benefits to the changes in the VA program. These are time sensitive entitlements. Please call us back at your earliest convenience.”

The voicemail includes a fraudulent call-back number for “veterans’ services.”

Potential victims who call the number are offered “benefits,” such as loan modifications to their mortgages, then asked for persona l in for mation, i nclud i ng Socia l Secu r it y numbers, dates of birth and bank account numbers.

Scammers who gain access to such information can use it to steal money from bank accounts or credit cards, or

An AARP article about veterans’ scams reports nearly 80 percent of veterans surveyed reported being targeted by

scams related to their military service.

If you get a call that offers any of the above “services,” hang up immediately. If you get a voice message, write down the callback number and contact law enforcement to report the scam. Also, file a complaint with the FCC at consumercomplaints.fcc.gov.

GALLUP HOUSING AUTHORITY BUYS EAST MESA APARTMENTS On October 25, 2019 the Gallup Housing Authority completed the purchase of the East Mesa Apartments [pictured right] from Bill and Betty Armstrong of Farmington, NM [formerly long-time residents of Gallup, NM and previous owners of Century 21 Realty]. The Armstrong’s had owned this property since 1991.

This is a 24-unit apartment complex. All units are 2-bedroom, 1-Bath units. They are six two story buildings located at 710, 710 ½, 712, 712 ½, 714 and 714 ½ East Mesa Avenue in Gallup, NM. Over the last five years they have been consistently at or near 100% occupancy.

Beleaguered former coach to face misdemeanor charges ARRESTED AND REMOVED FROM STAFF IN OCTOBER Staff Reports

A

former Miyamura High School football coach is no longer facing felony charges in connection with his arrest in October for stealing money from one of his players.

John Roanhaus, 42, still faces a misdemeanor charge of larceny in connection with the incident. He is scheduled to have a non-jury trial in Magistrate Court Jan. 16. The court held a preliminary hearing on the matter last week.

The New Mexico State Police issued a statement Oct. 7 stating that Roanhaus was arrested after police rev iewed a v ideo wh ich allegedly showed him removing money from a football player’s wallet, which the player had placed in his school locker.

Shortly after Roanhaus’ arrest, the school district replaced him as the team’s coach.

WEEKLY DWI REPORT Staff Reports Lizer Kionte Nov. 20, 4:36 pm Aggravated DW I (1st offense) Gallup P o l i c e Officer Timo Molina said he was dispatched to the east ramp of Interstate 40 in connection with a single vehicle crash.

When Molina arrived, he met Lizer Kionte, 23, no address given. Kionte at first said he was not the driver, but then admitted he was. He also admitted to drinking two 16 ounce cans of beer about two hours before getting behind the wheel.

Kionte agreed to do the standard field sobriety tests and failed. He was arrested for DWI. He refused to take a breath alcohol test and was transported to county jail.

Martinez said she was d i spat ched to the parki n g lo t of Wa l - M a r t i n con nection with an accident When she got to the scene, she met the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident. The woman said she was sitting in her car waiting for her daughter when she was struck by another vehicle which then attempted to leave.

She said she ran after the other vehicle and watched as it reversed, almost hitting two other people before stopping.

Martinez then talked to the other driver , identified as Jade Dennison, 36, of Navajo, N.M. Dennison was talking on her cell phone trying to get her insurance information.

Martinez also noticed she was holding onto the door of her vehicle for support.

Martinez asked Dennison why was trying to leave the scene of the accident and Dennison said she was talking

Assault in Gamerco Staff Reports

A

physical altercation between a Gallup man, his girlfriend and her son led to the arrest of David Halona, 28, of Gamerco.

W hen Deput y Ja mes Sanchez arrived at Halona’s address Nov. 22, a domestic dispute was in progress and medical units were on the scene. Medical personnel were attending to Halona, who had lacerations to his head.

On the way to the Gallup Indian Medical Center, Halona gave no information.

Sanchez then spoke to Marissa Marquez, who told him that she and Halona were at Sports Page Lounge in Gallup that afternoon drinking a 12-pack of beer.

Marquez said Halona got upset on the way home and accused her of cheating on him. She said she called her son, Kenneth Marquez, to pick her up.

When Marquez and her son

arrived home, Halona would not let her inside her home.

She said he began pushing her and broke her fingernails. Then Halona and Kenneth Marquez got into a physical altercation.

Then, all three of them began fighting.

Marquez said her son struck Halona with his fist and Halona fell. She said her son was kicking Halona on the ground which caused lacerations to Halona’s head.

W hen f irst responders arrived, Kenneth Marquez fled.

Sanchez gave Marquez a temporary restraining order packet. Then he made contact

with Halona at GIMC and asked for his v e r s io n of the story.

Halona was uncooperative, saying at first that David Halona he could not remember. Then telling a story that he changed several times, saying he was hit by a vehicle; then saying he got into a fight.

S a nc he z not ic e d t h a t Halona’s left eye was swollen and that he had several head lacerations.

The deputy reported that

Halona became agitated and abusive with him, security, hospital staff and another deputy, threatening their homes and families. He rose from his bed in the emergency room and took a fighting stance, as if he had a knife in his hand.

Sa nchez deta ined him, placed him in cuffs and placed him back on the bed, so staff could complete his medical evaluation.

W hen he wa s clea red, Halona was charged with battery against a household member and then transported to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked.

Body discovered near Del Norte Elementary THIRD OPEN FIELD DEATH IN NOVEMBER Staff Reports a l lu p Pol ic e a r e t r y i ng to determine the identity of a body found on the north side of Gallup early Nov. 26.

The badly decomposed body of a Native American male was found about 8:53 am by two passers-by near the

football field at 631 N. Sixth St. Pol ice Capt a i n Er i n Toadlena-Pablo said there was no identification on the body and it is uncertain how long the body was there.

There is no official cause of death. But police are treating it as an open field death which means death was caused by exposure to the cold weather.

Molina asked the driver for his driver’s license and after a delay he was given a license identifying the driver as Ramsey Lee, 39, of Gallup.

Lee admitted, that he had had two big beers at home before driv ing. W hen Lee demonstrated the size, Molina determined the beers were about 12 ounces. He asked about the beers in the car and Lee said they were old. When

U.S. Attorney Gen. William Barr, U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, and other tribal leaders were also in attendance at the White House for the Nov. 26 ceremony.   “This is another step forward for Indigenous nations throughout the countr y. I commend President Trump

T

he skies over Gallup will soon be filled with an inviting sight, one that signals the arrival of one of the staple events of Gallup. One, then dozens, and

fi nally hundreds of hot-air balloons will dot the sky when the 39th annual Red Rock Balloon Rally takes fl ight from Dec. 6 to 8 over Red Rock Park and surrounding areas.

“We expect about 135 balloons this year,” Balloon Rally Co-Founder Peter Procopio

said Nov. 25. “Balloons and pilots are coming from all over.

We have a pilot coming from England named Graham Bell.

He’s in his last year of flying.”

B el l , who h a i l s f r om Malvern, Worcestershire-Great Britain, has previously flown in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. He is one of the pilots who came to Gallup for the rally after it earned international appeal at the start of the century.

H IST O RY OF T H E RALLY Procopio, along with Lionel McKinney, Michael Siebersma and Karl Lohmann, are credited with establishing the Red Rock Balloon Rally in 1981.

What began as a small effort by these four individuals to share the unique flying challenge and landscape offered in the red rock formations east of Gallup, has turned into one of the largest balloon rallies in the United States and across the world.

In a previous interview with the Sun, Procopio recalled the beginnings of the Red Rock Balloon Rally.

The fi rst rally saw a small group of people meet at the old Ramada Inn on Gallup’s west end to plan and troubleshoot the event. Procopio said at the time the first rally saw about 50 balloonists come out and that number doubled the year after.

The idea that evolved from observing a now-gone balloon rally in Farmington, is now one of the world’s biggest in terms of attraction and number of participants, according to Procopio.

File Photo This growth in international appeal happened in 2002 after a pair of articles and photo spreads was published in the monthly fashion magazine Harper’s BAZAAR and took the rally to new heights, Procopio said. Writers and photographers spent a week in Gallup gathering information, researching, and interviewing people for the articles.

According to Procopio, to date the Red Rock Balloon Rally has been canceled only once, in 2011, due to heavy snow and fog.

ON T H E PRO G R A M THIS YEAR Gallup-McKinley County Chamber of Commerce CEO Bill Lee said he is very excited about this year’s event.

“We’re hoping for great weather and for next weekend to be a great weekend for ballooning here in Gallup,” Lee said.

Procopio said this year’s schedule looks to be as packed as that of previous years. He has previously flown a balloon named “Koshare Gallup,” a reference to a sacred clown of Native American Pueblo origin, which will be seen in the skies at this year’s event as well.

The morning of Dec. 7, the anniversary of the bombing at Pearl Harbor, is one moment Procopio wants to highlight.

The Community Pantry will cater their annual breakfast for the ballooning family on Dec. 8 at Red Rock Park. Even as you read this, the Community Pantry staff members and volunteers are preparing for the big spread.

During the Balloonminaria at Rio West mall Dec. 8, volunteers from the Community Pantry will be moving amongst the crowd in purple hoodies and yellow vests (see picture on bottom right) selling hot chocolate packets for $3 apiece.

Each packet contains a cup, hot chocolate, marshmallows and a candy cane stick stirrer.

Finding your way around a hot air balloon Staff Reports

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never been up close to a hot air balloon, it may appear to be a large, colorful teardrop, sitting on a field or traveling in the air. But when you get near it, or inside, or maybe youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lucky enough to help blow it up, you see that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more than a single element.

It has parts.

The main parts of a hot air balloon are: Parachute valve: Holes in the envelope at the top and bottom of the balloon allow hot air to escape and make it possible for the balloon to lift off and land. The top of the balloon, or the crown, has a hole in it called the parachute vent or valve. It can be opened by pulling on a cord. When the pilot pulls the cord, hot air can escape, lowering the inner air temperature and allowing the balloon to slow its ascent.

G or e s: I n mo st mod er n hot a ir ba lloons, the envelope is constructed from long nylon gores, reinforced with sewn-in webbing. The gores, which extend from the base of the envelope to the crown, are made up of a number of smaller panels.

The gores expand at the top (called the â&#x20AC;&#x153;crownâ&#x20AC;?) and taper at the bottom (the â&#x20AC;&#x153;skirtâ&#x20AC;?).

This shape helps keep the hot air in the balloon. The top of the envelope is made out of a heavier nylon with a silicone coating to protect the balloon from high heat, molds, and fungi.

Envelope: The envelope contains heated air and is generally made from nylon fabric.

Skirt: The nylon at the base of the envelope, is coated with special fi re-resistant material, to keep the flame from igniting the balloon. The hot air doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t escape from the hole at the bottom of the envelope, because buoyancy keeps it moving up.

Burners: Located between the envelope and the gondola, they heat the air to make the balloon travel.

Gondola or basket: Often made of wicker, the basket is where riders stay when they take balloon rides.

Propane tanks: Carried inside, the propane tanks power the burners. Modern hot air balloons heat the air by burning propane. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the same substance commonly used in outdoor cooking grills.

The propane is stored in compressed liquid form, in lightweight cylinders positioned in the balloon basket. The intake hose runs down to the bottom of the cylinder, so it can draw the liquid out.

A short history of hot-air balloons Staff Reports

T

he concept of hot-air ballooning goes back thousands of years, but someone physically putting a hot-air balloon into the air didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen until about 1783.

The Montgolfier Brothers, Jacques-Ă&#x2030;tienne and JosephMichel, initially sent a sheep, a chicken, and a duck up into the air successfully. Following their initial flight triumph, they decided to send up two men up for about 20 minutes.

T he s e t wo men wer e Pilatre de Rozier and Marquis François dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Arlandes, who were not condemned criminals as King Louis XVI had originally wanted. In fact, de Rozier, known as the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fi rst balloonist, had to petition the King to be on the fi rst manned hotair balloon fl ight.

After manned hot-air balloon fl ights became a reality, the next step in the evolution of balloons, came the first manned hydrogen balloon fl ight by Jacques Charles with Nicolas-Louis Robert on Dec. 1, 1783. The balloon reportedly made it up to 3,000 meters high.

Flying across the English Channel was the next significant milestone in ballooning, a feat accomplished by JeanPierre Blanchard Jan. 7, 1785.

The fi rst manned balloon flight in America was on Jan. 10, 1793 by Jean-Pierre Blanchard using a hydrogen-filled balloon.

President George Washington was in attendance as the balloon took off.

Balloons ser ved in the military and were utilized for scientific research purposes throughout the world throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

The invention of the blimp early in the 20th century caused the hot-air balloon to be phased out by many militaries.

Modern hot-air balloons would be created by Paul Edward Yost as part of a commission by the Navy in the 1950s to see how balloons could be used for other military and scientific applications.

While the military idea faded out, Yost continued to see how the balloons could be used for civilian purposes.

On Oct. 22, 1960, Yost piloted the maiden fl ight of the new type of hot-air balloon known around the world today.

Insect Apocalypse A new report suggests that half of all insects on the planet have been lost since 1970 from a combination of habitat destruction, climate change and the increa sed use of pesticides. Published in the journal Biological Conservation, the report warns that 40% of the 1 million insect species known to science are facing extinction. But conservationists say many of those insects can be rescued by slashing pesticide use and making areas around our global communities more wildlife friendly.

s temperatures continue to fall, the New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center remind New Mexicans that they can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning by taking a few protective measures.

“As it gets colder, we start seeing more carbon monoxide poisonings,” NMDOH Cabinet Secretary Kathy Kunkel said.

“To prepare for winter weather, New Mexicans should make sure their heat sources and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order.”

In 2018 carbon monoxide poisoning sent 187 people to the emergency room according to Environmental Public Health Tracking. These trips to the ER for carbon monoxide poisoning are preventable when people are prepared.

Stock photo To protect yourself and your family from carbon monoxide poisoning, EPHT offers these safety tips: - Have you r f u r naces, wood-burning stoves, chimneys and ventilation systems inspected annually by a professional to make sure these heating system components are functionally sound and vent properly to the outside.

This should be done for homes and buildings, including structures used for spiritual and

religious purposes and outdoor recreation.

- Don’t use any malfunctioning heating products.

- Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors in your home, as well as battery operated detectors for outdoor use, such as in RVs, cabins, barns, and boats. The EPHT website has tips for selecting detectors.

- Never run a gasoline or propane heater or a grill (gas or charcoal) inside your home

- Generators should be run at a safe distance (at least 20 feet) from the home.

- Never run a car in an enclosed space.

OPINIONS New immigration rule could cost New Mexicans millions HOMELAND SECURITY RULES COULD COST THOUSANDS OF JOBS

A

LBUQUERQUE New Mexico could lose an estimated $146 million in federal funds if the Department of Homeland Security is able to implement rules it promulgated regarding government benefits, including nutrition and health care services. That lack of federal funds would translate to a loss to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) of as much as $285 million, as well as 1,937

jobs, and $17 million in state tax revenue. That’s according to a policy brief co-released Nov. 25 by the Fiscal Policy Institute of New York and New Mexico Voices for Children.

The new rules would add several safety-net programs to the current list of benefits that, if used, may be counted against an immigrant when they apply for permanent residency or to extend a visa. Five federal courts have handed down injunctions that have put a stop to the implementation of the rule on the grounds that it is likely unlawful. The DHS is

appealing the decisions.

“Immigrants come to the U.S. today for the same reason they have come for hundreds of years - to build a better life for their families,” Executive Director of New Mexico Voices for Children James Jimenez said. “As a group, immigrants are hard workers, but anyone can hit a rough patch and need a hand. That’s why we have safety-net programs - to help people get back on their feet and contribute to their communities.”

that have members who are immigrants - meaning people have stopped using or not applied for benefits they are eligible to receive due to concern for themselves or a family member who is an immigrant. If the rule is implemented, the policy brief estimates that it would have a chilling effect on 170,000 New Mexicans, including 70,000 children - almost all of whom (60,000) are U.S. citizens.

“Aside from sending the message that if you’re not young, healthy, and wealthy, you’re not welcome in the U.S., the point of the rule change seems to be to

Facts vs. opinions with regard to gun violence

The simple fact is we really don’t know exactly what combination of actions will work to prevent gun violence. While the mass killings get the headlines, most gun homicides occur when one, two or three people are killed. Scientific American Magazine in Aug. 2019 pointed out our lack of large-scale useful studies to determine what will actually

work. The magazine observes that in 1996 after a series of scientific studies indicated that gun ownership led to an increase in gun violence, the National Rif le Association pushed our congress to pass a law prohibiting gun studies.

Since that time there have been small, regional gun studies, but none that are large scale or cover all the data available in the U.S. This year the U. S. House of Representatives passed a bill authorizing $50

million for such a national study. If the Senate approves this, we will have solid data (remember - dat a d r iven results), to guide future action.

With the proper facts we can certainly find a way to live with the Second Amendment ensuring Americans Right to Bear Arms without having to outfit our wives in body armor to go shopping. We need the facts so we can replace our opinions with data and then take intelligent action.

“We just wanted to be a part of the community and just to help out. We wanted to do our part in helping those who have to deal with being in this cold weather,” she said.

R MCHC S CEO Dav id Conejo was quite pleased with the response. “It’s an exciting event, we didn’t know what the response would be. Now that it has been so successful, we want to do this every year. We wanted to distribute things to keep them [area people in need] warm and alive.

The or igina l thought wa s that every year a number of organizations would try to do something to get gloves and coats out. If everybody came out together, we would have a

much larger distribution and a much better organization to draw people in.”

Conejo said the attendance reassured him that his original intention of making the Day of Giving an annual event was on track.

“Instead of having a [bag] of clothes you’re distributing, you suddenly have tons of clothes that are being distributed and a bigger attendance.” he added.

Food is an additional draw, he pointed out.

Camarota said the event was designed to join forces between all the helping agencies throughout the city. They came out together to call for donations and distribute as one.

“We’re doing all winter clothing and other items for this winter,” Camarota said.

“We put fl yers on store windows, radio ads, a nd put word of mouth, it was a collective work from everybody.

We had other organizations come down to help. We’re

also helping the food pantry by accepting non-perishable food items, and helping out that need, too.”

Camarota said any leftover donations will be given to other agencies that might see a need.

“It’s a big turn around and the give back is so powerful.”

Camarota said.

Amos Mitchell, who is currently homeless in Gallup, and found his way down from Minnesota , expressed his thoughts on the day’s event.

“I’m so proud to see these people come out here and help out all my brothers and sisters that are out here on the streets. I’m so proud to see them do that. There aren’t that many people who do that. It’s their choice to [do] that; their choice to do that for others. I bless them for opening their hearts and doing it.”

OV. 22, 2019; PIZZA 9; RIO WEST MALL; 5:45 PM; GALLUP Everyone is seated. A whole large cheese pizza sits in front of us. All that’s left is the signal to start munching down on this bad boy. I am ready to take part in the Pizza 9 Pizza Eating Contest here at the Rio West Mall and I am more nervous than excited.

The competition was held Nov. 22. Family members urged me to enter this contest because of my love for pizza.

That’s no exaggeration. If truth be known, once I arrived in New Mexico, I pretty much lived on pizza. If there was a new pizza joint, I was there.

Pepperoni pizza has always been my all-time favorite. Mix in a little green chili and I’m in pizza heaven. Any pizza, any topping, it doesn’t matter, I simply love pizza, and entering this contest would only enhance my passion for it.

The competition drew 45 contestants from all walks of life and hungry mouths of every size. It was held in center court for everyone to see you stuff your mouth. I, like every competitor, entered online, and COMMUNITY

simply had to show up. Before the contest, I drank lots of water, after being given advice to prep myself for the event.

Thoughts raced through my head as I waited for the go ahead.

“I wonder if this person next to me will win? What happens to the leftover pizza? Wow, I really do love pizza,” I thought to myself.

Marketing Director Pizza 9 Franchise, Jasmine Bouquez of Albuquerque, was pleased about the attendance at the event, especially since it was being held for the first time in Gallup. In the past they had held a couple pizza eating contests and it had gone away. Then, mall management approached Bouquez to bring the competition to Gallup.

“This was my first time doing it here and I was pretty excited,” Bouquez said. “It was a good turn-out and everyone seems to be having fun, and I was so happy.”

Bouquez was the emcee and narrated the progress of each competitor through each group.

judges and I wondered if they, too, had a secret love for pizza, as I do.

The rules were given out and water was supplied to help in the process of downing the cheese pizza.

The judges were there to tabulate and make sure you ate the whole slice and nothing but the slice.

Groups of six contestants were called out and were given 10 minutes to eat as much pizza as they could.

Then my name was called and here I sit ready to prove my love for pizza.

“Alright, hands on the table and good luck to everyone and go.” Bouquez calls.

I open up the box before me and immediately I see the steam rising from the cheese pizza and feel the heat as I place it in my mouth. Screams and cheers can be heard as the competition starts.

My family is cheering me on, holding a sign that reads “Go Daddy.” Seeing that sign gives me a jolt of energy and it’s on.

“Go Daddy go” hits my ears and I begin on my second slice. Bouquez is urging on the audience to cheer for their family members and a wave of excitement fills the air. Mall

onlookers stop to see what the racket isabout and why were there people on stage shoveling pizza into their mouths at an unusual pace.

I hear Bouquez announce that a competitor has just fi nished their seventh slice, and I am like, ‘what?’

The two-minute warning is given, and I am now ready for my fi fth pizza slice with a mouth that I was told afterwards, looked like a chipmunk storing acorns for the winter.

Suddenly, I hit the dreaded wall I heard so much about. My jaw is beginning to tighten up, and I try to make more room in my chipmunk mouth by drinking water.

“5-4-3-2-1 alright everyone stop,” Bouquez calls out.

The contest was over, and I fi nished with eating only five slices, compared to my other worthy opponents. I took what pizza was left and gave it to my daughters.

Eric Jesus of Window Rock, Ariz., took third place by eating nine slices and winning $100.

“It felt good, plus it was good, and winning some money was cool, too.” Jesus told me.

Johntia n Ja mes of Vanderwagen took second place by consuming 10 slices of pizza and winning $250. He

heard about the contest on the radio.

“It was good, and I didn’t think I could eat that much pizza.” he laughed, “But I was surprised I won second. I was hoping I would be first. Almost got it, but I had a piece of pizza left. But second is good. I’m happy.”

Shane Wilson of Bluewater took first place by wolfing down a total of 11 hot piping cheese slices to take home the title of Pizza King and a nice chunk of change - $500. Being no stranger to food competitions, Wilson competed in the Fire Rock Casino Slider eating contest taking fi rst place there, and won fourth place in a food event on the Navajo Nation. He decided to try this competition.

“It feels pretty good to win.

My mouth’s on fire. I burnt the top of my mouth, but I felt pretty good,” Wilson smiled. “I just won $500 bucks. I’m happy and excited.”

During the contest, Pizza 9 gave away some cool prizes to the contestants and at the end, even gave away some free pizza. Everyone seemed to have fun and so did I. I was asked after eating that much pizza if this tarnished my love for pizza. Defi nitely not. I love pizza and will ‘til the day I die.

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Knives Outâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a cutting, sharply written mystery

As a result, it can be difficult to get all that excited about another one making the rounds. Yet while whodunits are nothing new, Knives Out manages to spin these familiar tropes in entertaining new ways and uses crafty dialogue and an exemplary cast to really amuse and charm viewers. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a heck of a lot of fun.

The story revolves around the members of a wealthy and eccentric American family headed by crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). When a tragedy occurs in the household, a trio of men is sent to investigate, including a pair of police detectives (Lakeith Stanfield and Noah Segan), and an odd private detective with a southern drawl named Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). Blanc admits soon after his arrival that he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even know who has hired him. But together, the group conducts interviews with Harlanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nurse Marta (Ana de Armas), and various members of the family (including

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Knives Outâ&#x20AC;? is the tale of a wealthy eccentric family that displays its dysfunction when its 85-year-old patriarch is murdered. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult to discuss the details of the feature without giving too much away, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll try to keep things general. All of the suspects have something to gain financially from the death, and there are a great many complications that arise when the fi lm cuts between characters being interviewed, as they often give hazy or differing

accounts while being asked identical questions. The fi lm comes out of the gate racing and provides plenty of chuckles with the defensive, suspicious, and ultimately greedy behavior on display.

The screenplay by director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper) does a great job of both paying homage to familiar murder mystery concepts and poking fun at them. Many family members are at odds for one reason or another, leading to plenty of biting verbal jabs as the group

bickers. Even the investigators are not immune to some snarky barbs from this wealthy and affluent family. The characters have some entertaining ticks as well, including the nurseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s propensity for feeling nauseous whenever she has to lie.

And private detective Blancâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accent is pretty outrageous, but actor Craig manages to somehow play it just right and avoid straight out parody. Instead, his mannerisms add a layer to the role, as viewers try to get a handle on whether he truly is clever or if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just an act.

This mov ie a lso bene fits from spinning some old ideas in different directions (including an unusual take on a chase). And while the feature is a sprightly, energetic, and amusing mystery on its own, it earns extra points by taking on some of the conservative views of this aristocratic clan and their hypocritical behavior (as well as by proxy, anyone who supports the far right). It

might ruffle the feathers of a few sensitive viewers, but there is some sharp and biting commentary beneath the surface.

Truthfully, perhaps the only minor criticism this reviewer can raise about the picture is that for all of the red herrings, the final explanation and reveal isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite as complicated as anticipated. Of course, this may have more to do with having seen more murder-mysteries in a lifetime than I can remember and already knowing all of the tricks of the trade.

Still, one canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t deny that this picture works better than most and will provide whodunit fans with a great night of entertainment. Thanks to the great cast and cutting, sharply written screenplay with more on its mind than simply murder, Knives Out is a hoot that should keep audiences enraptured for the entirety of its running time.

Blu-ray/DVD Roundup for November 29, 2019

In fact, it’s time for another look at some of the highlights coming your way. So, if you can’t make it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

Big New Releases!

Amazing Grace - Using f o o t a g e record i ng i n 1972 of Aretha F r a n k l i n per for m i ng songs at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in L.A. from her best-selling gospel album, this documentary records incredible footage of the artist at the top of her game. Viewers witness her vocal chops and learn more about the legendary talent. The press appeared to be similarly blown away by what they saw.

Only one complained that the movie didn’t focus on the right elements. All others stated that discovering this previously lost footage (from an unfinished documentary), was a revelation and stood as one of the best concert fi lms ever captured on camera.

Angel Has Fallen - The third chapter in this action trilogy follows the events of Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen. This time out, heroic Secret Service agent Mike Banning is framed for an assassination plot on the President. With his employer in a coma and both criminal and government agents looking to take him down, the lead must prove his innocence and save the day. Critics weren’t all that enamored with this effort.

About a third called it a decent action movie bolstered by some good action. Still, most suggested that this was an uneventful thriller with nothing new and noted that viewers wouldn’t remember anything ten minutes after it ended. It stars Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo and Nick Nolte.

sees yet another. Also known as Surviving Christmas with the Relatives, this movie is a comedy from the UK about two sisters and their families who are forced to spend Christmas at their late parents’ dilapidated country home. Chaos follows as sibling rivalries and personal issues heat up.

Response towards the picture was incredibly negative.

There currently aren’t any positive write-ups. The consensus is that while the cast ise talented, the overall effect is generic, bland, and the movie simply doesn’t deliver the required laughs. Gemma W hela n, Ju l ia n O venden, Joely Richardson and Michael Landes headline the feature.

Don’t Let Go - A policeman’s sister, brother-in-law, and niece die suddenly in what seems to be a murder.

Devastated, the lead begins receiving frantic phone calls from his deceased niece, who appears to be calling from a time when she was still alive. This sends the protagonist on a strange and surreal search to try to change the horrible events that have transpired. The press gave this thriller mixed reviews.

A small group called the story absurd, but described it as an engaging and energetic effort with solid work from the lead performer. More complained that despite some interesting elements, the story didn’t make much sense and fell apart as it stumbled forward.

It stars David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson and Alfred Molina.

Mary - In this independent horror effort, a blue-collar captain heads out to an auction and buys an abandoned ship.

After taking it on the sea with his family, he realizes what a bad idea it all was. Strange and terrifying events begin plaguing the clan, causing them to turn on one another and question their own sanity. They even begin to believe that an evil force out at sea may be behind their troubles.

Critics really hated this picture, almost uniformly panning it. All of them wrote that while the movie looked well-produced, the story was a wreck, filled with clichés and provided

little in the way of thrills or suspense. The cast includes Gary Oldman, Emily Mortimer, Jennifer Esposito, Stefanie Scott and Owen Teague.

Stay Out Stay Alive - Five young hikers head out into a redwood forest and come upon a mine in the wilderness that dates back to the Gold Rush.

Well, more like one of t hem falls through a hole and ends up in a mine. Anyway, they set up camp and decide to investigate, hoping to find some riches. Unfor tunately, the group begins seeing ghostly activ ity and star ts acting strangely, becoming greedy and turning on one other as the tale progresses.

This little horror flick is debuting on disc and hasn’t been screened for anyone yet.

As such, one should exercise caution around this one. It features Barbara Crampton, Willia m Roma no -Pugh, Brandon Wardle, Sage Mears, Christina July Kim and Brie Mattson.

Use Me - An aspiring documentary fi lmmaker meets a young woman whom he decides to use as a subject for a film.

She works as a woman who humiliates men for money. Alas, she appears to be very good at her job, as the director starts to fi nd himself feeling manipulated and pulled into her unusual and potentially dangerous world. This small indie feature earned a lot of good notices at fi lm festivals.

While one or two write-ups suggested that it only worked as a mockumentary and struggled to make an impression otherwise, the consensus was that the writing was sharper than anticipated and the movie offered some surprises and good performances. Ceara Lynch, Julian Shaw and Jazlyn Yoder headline the fi lm.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette - Based on the bestselling book

by Maria Sample, this comedy follows a mom who begins to reconnect with her creative juices after sacrificing her life for many years to her husband and family. After numerous troubles and conflicts arise

at home, she decides to step away and disappears, leaving her relatives to try to fi nd her and come to a resolution about what should follow. This picture split the press.

About half thought that it didn’t match the source material, oversimplifying the events and resolving things too quickly. Just as many commented that while uneven, the movie was interesting and featured a complex and fascinating protagonist. It stars Cate Blanchett, Billy Crudup, Kristin Wiig, Emma Nelson, James Urbaniak and Judy Greer.

Blasts from the Past!

It’s a n incredibly busy week for older fi lms receiving high definition upgrades. Arrow Video is getting it all off to a great start with a new “Limited Edition” Blu-ray of the brilliant action classic, Robocop (1987). The film is about a nice guy cop who is brutally wounded in the line of duty and repurposed as a cyborg cop. While that may sound like any other low-budget genre picture, this fi lm is much sharper, featuring fantastic action and undercurrents and satire flowing throughout that addresses private companies and what happens when an employee is essentially turned into a corporate product.

It’s one of the best movies of its era, and the new package certainly treats its as such. The release comes in a box and contains both the unrated and R-rated versions

of the fi lm scanned in 4K from the original camera negative.

You’ll get an audio commentary with director Paul Verhoeven (The 4th Man, Total Recall, Starship Troopers) along with two new tracks, one from a film historian and the other with fans. The release includes a new interview with co-writer Michael Miner, and another recent talk with the other co-writer, Ed Neumeier.

There are also new discussions with co-star Nancy Allen, as well as the casting director and the second unit director. You’ll also get featurettes on the visual effects, Basil Paledouris’s memorable score, a look at the props used, a 2017 Q&A with the director, writers and stars of the picture, as well as every archival special feature from every previously released version. This is the perfect package for a perfect action fi lm.

Distrib Films is putting out the French drama Olivia (1951) in high definition. And ClassicFlix is about to make the comedy, Out of the Blue (1947) available. It’s about a mild-mannered married man who innocently befriends a woman while his wife is out of town. W hen she passes

out at his home, he thinks she might have died and tries to cover up the incident to avoid trouble, but finds his actions get him in over his head. It arrives with trailers for other releases from the company.

And Warner Archive is putting out a made-to-order Bluray of the Virginia May/Robert Stack adventure fl ick, Great Day in the Morning (1956), which can be ordered through its website or on Amazon (if it’s in stock).

Specialized FBI Rapid Deployment Teams: The strategy will bring needed tools and resources to law enforcement. Upon request by a tribal, state, or local law enforcement agency the FBI will provide expert assistance based upon

the circumstances of a missing indigenous persons case.

FBI resources and personnel which may be activated to assist with cases include: Child Abduction Rapid Deployment (CARD) teams, Cellular Analysis Suppor t Teams, Ev idence Response Teams, Cyber Agents for timely analysis of digital evidence/social media, Victim Services Division Response Teams, and others. MMIP coordinators will assist in developing protocols.

Comprehen sive Dat a Analysis: The department will perform in-depth analyses of federally supported databases and analyze data collection practices to identify opportunities to improve missing persons data and share the results with our partners in this effort.

More broadly, the MMIP Initiative will involve a coordinated effort by more than 50 U.S. Attorneys on the Attorney General’s Native American Issues Subcommittee, the FBI, and the Office of Tribal Justice, with support from the Office of Justice Programs and the Office on Violence Against Women.

“The issue of missing and murdered Indigenous persons has not only affected families, but it impacts communities.

As leaders, we must continue to advocate for safety and justice for Native women and children. Most importantly, we need to address efforts to restore balance, love, and harmony within Native homes and communities,” Dottie Lizer said.

The murder rate is ten times higher than the national average for American Indian women, with 84 percent experiencing some form of violence during their lifetime. There is still no reliable way of knowing how many Native women go missing each year, because the databases that hold statistics of these cases are outdated.

Besides, issues have arisen due to the lack of coordination between law enforcement agencies.

by Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. The act aims to protect American Indian women, men, and children from violent crimes. The Senate moved forward with its version in the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Committee earlier this week.
