T

he people of Gallup know Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura’s story, but now it’s ava ilable to a wider audience. In August, the Association of the United States Army released an eightpage graphic novel that details Miyamura’s life and the events that led up to him earning a Medal of Honor for his service in the Korean War. Every year, AUSA publishes four graphic novels that tell the story of a Medal of Honor recipient. These graphic novels can be found online at http:// www.ausua.org/moh or interested parties can pick up a physical copy at AUSA’s annual conference in October. “With the Medal of Honor series we want to cover a wide spectrum of stories that represent the recipients of the Medal of Honor going back to the Civil War up to the present day,” Joseph Craig, the director of AUSA’s book program, explained. “Each year when we’re releasing four new stories we want to make sure we’re covering different conflicts.” The project has been going on for eight years, and during that time AUSA has covered heroes from the Civil War to the modern War on Terror. AUSA enlists the help of professionals in the comic book field to tell these heroes’ stories. Chuck Dixon started his career in the comic book world in the ‘80s. He has worked for both DC and Marvel, and is the co-creator of the Batman character Bane. He’s written the script for 12 of these AUSA graphic novels. In an interview with the Sun,

Part of Hiroshi Miyamura's story includes Joe Annello, a fellow solider who was injured in battle. As Chinese soliders were marching Miyamura and fellow soliders away, Annello lay injured on the ground. Miyamura refused to leave him. They both survived the war, and Annello often visited Miyamura in Gallup until his death in 2018. Brigadier General Ralph Osborne explained to Miyamura and a group of reporters upon notifying them of his medal, “If the Reds knew what he had done to a good number of their soldiers just before he was taken prisoner, they might have taken

revenge on this young man. He might not have come back.” Miyamura was held for 28 months. He was awarded the Medal of Honor while he was still being held captive. At the time, the U.S. Army didn’t know if they would be giving the award to Miyamura posthumously or not. Following his relea se on Aug. 20, 1953, Miya mura wa s informed that he had been awarded the Medal of Honor and promoted to sergeant. He was repatriated to the U.S. and honorably discharged from the military shortly thereafter. His medal was presented to him by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in October 1953.

GRAPHIC NOVEL | SEE COVER MIYAMURA’S LEGACY IN GALLUP Miyamura passed away on Nov. 29, 2022. He spent the rest of his life after his time in the service supporting the community in which he lived. Hiroshi Miyamura High School bears his name, and while he was alive Miyamura made sure that each graduating senior received one of his Challenge Coins. The Challenge Coins represent the pride and commitment that someone in the service showed. Miyamura’s coin shows his face on one side and the Medal of Honor on the other. In July 2023, the U.S. Senate u na n imously passed a bill that renamed Gallup’s Ve t e r a n s A f f a i r s Com mu n it y-Ba sed Outpatient Clinic as the Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura VA Clinic. “Rena ming the VA Clinic in Gallup is one important way we can continue to honor Hershey Miyamura’s courageous actions and brave sacrifices during the Korean War and his lifelong commitment to this community,” Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., said after the clinic was renamed. “I will never forget the interactions I was so lucky to have with Hershey over the years. I was especially proud to join him nearly a decade ago to cut the ribbon and open this clinic that provides vital health care services to veterans from Gallup and surrounding areas.”

Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura’s Medal of Honor graphic novel is eight pages, and details the events that earned him the Medal of Honor and his life growing up in Gallup. In this panel, President Dwight D. Eisenhower presents him with the medal in October 1953.

‘Wicked’

dazzles with strong visuals, performances By Glenn Kay For the Sun Rating: ««« out of «««« Running Time: 160 minutes

T

his feature from Universal Pictures is currently playing at theaters. So, if you’re an avid fan of the hit Broadway musical Wicked then you probably already know the big reveal about this week’s lavish film adaptation of the material… the on-screen title is Wicked Part 1, which means it only tackles the first half of the show. Reportedly, the movie has also used the original written source material to extend the plot. The lack of openness about what is being presented is something of a surprise, but at least enthusiasts of the musical can take relief in the fact that what is presented is effectively delivered. The feature does suffer a bit from its extended running time, but will still entertain those excited about this production.

Truthfully, the film begins in a clumsy manner as it shows the aftermath of the death of the “Wicked Witch of the West” aka Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) from the classic tale The Wizard of Oz. There are moments of Glinda the Good (Ariana Grande) telling citizens of the fantasy world, celebratory songs celebrating the character’s passing, and brief flashes of Elphaba and her life. It’s all a bit jarring and choppy for the first ten minutes. Thankfully, after a brief set-up detailing Elphaba’s early life and the cruel treatment she experiences because of her green skin, things settle down and focus on the central plot. The action moves to Shiz University, where Elphaba is helping her paraplegic sister Nessa (Marissa Bode) settle in. After the expected mistreatment by new students, Elphaba reacts and displays magical skills. This draws the attention of Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), who enrolls the lead at the school and has her stay with Glinda. These two students immediately butt heads and also find themselves competing for the affection of fellow student and prince, Fiyero Togelaar (Jonathan Bailey). But there are even bigger issues occurring at the university. The animal population on campus is slowly being barred and removed. As Elphaba’s abilities grow, she is given the opportunity to meet the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum) in the Emerald City and plead her case for respecting the animal population. Of course, things do not go as expected. Everything about the movie is impressively mounted, with the various fantasy locations making a positive

impression. Some familiar elements from the original picture, like the looming façade of the Wizard in Emerald City, are impressively updated with CGI effects. There are also a couple of notable sets, including a spinning school library that is used in a big musical number. All of the technical specs are top-notch and as you might have already guessed, the movie is full of tunes that will please those who enjoyed the stage version. The cast are also tremendous in the feature. Erivo is an excellent Elphaba, effectively displaying a mix of anger and rage at the way she is treated, while also shyness as she admittedly hopes to finally fit in among the population. Of course, the performer’s voice shines and the songs are belted out with emotion. The same goes for the cast in general, who all handle the numbers well. But of course, it isn’t perfect. Problems do arise from the fact that this is only half of the story (this one movie is almost as long as the full musical). While the desire may be to develop characters, it is still a musical delivering grand gestures and broad jokes and so there’s only so much depth that can be added. The film is essentially an extended set-up, focused on introducing the many players and plot threads. Yes, we do see a major change in Elphaba, but most of the big dramatic conflict created is left hanging for next year’s follow-up. This picture is certainly critic-proof. Those who adored the original musical or this film’s stars will definitely enjoy being transported to Oz. It is also well-intentioned, dealing with issues like racism and prejudice that will speak to many age groups. In the end, Wicked is a solid film with excellent performances and beautiful visuals, but one that also feels overlong and mildly hampered by its unnecessary story additions. VISIT: WWW.CINEMASTANCE. ‘Moana 2’

weighed down by story, tone

By Glenn Kay For the Sun Rating: «« out of «««« Running Time: 100 minutes

T

his feature from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures opened exclusively in cinemas and on IMAX on Wednesday, Nov. 27. While this reviewer tends not to dole out personal details while reviewing a movie, on rare occasions I can’t help myself. I attended a preview of the sequel Moana 2 with a three-year-old. Yes, she is definitely a bit young for this picture, but did enjoy large chunks of the first one, particularly the songs, and tolerated the more chilling aspects of its tense climax. So, she came along for this one.

This follow-up follows the leads on a new, but in some ways similar adventure that is darker than the previous effort. If this film were being rated solely on its visuals, it would receive a hearty recommendation. However, the story comes up short and the final product lacks the charm of the original. A few years after the events of the original story, Moana (Auli’I Cravalho) has taken up the position of “Wayfinder” for her island village. Her dream is to discover other human settlements like their own and bring everyone together. She begins having jarring visions that suggest, should she not succeed in her goal at some hazy point in the future, all those from her homeland will disappear. Moana forms a small crew and sails out to find a hidden isle of ancestors called Motufetu, which could help her locate others. Unfortunately, the locale has been cursed by a god called Nalo, making the journey incredibly dangerous. In order to find her way, Moana asks demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) for his help. As expected, the animation is spectacular. The characters, including their hair and facial expressions, are even more impressively articulated in this effort than the previous entry. There are impressive shots through the ocean water as it splits and shows

GALLUP HOUSING AUTHORITY INVITATION to BID for ONE VEHICLE [Heavy Duty Truck] Bid#: 2024-ADM-01

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN: that the Gallup Housing Authority [GHA] will receive competitive sealed bids [quotes] for Fleet vehicles, until the closing date and time designated below, at which time bids [quotes] will be opened and publicly read aloud. Bid specifications and bid [quote] documents can be obtained from the Gallup Housing Authority at 203 Debra Drive, Gallup, New Mexico 87301 during posted office hours; or by making an email request to: richard.kontz@galluphousing.com 2. Bidders are hereby notified that the Procurement Code, Sections 131-28 through 13-1-199, NMSA, 1978 imposes civil and criminal penalties for code violations. In addition the New Mexico criminal statues impose felony/penalties for illegal bribes, gratuities and kickbacks.

Moana walking through dry areas. In fact, every shot involving waves and the ocean looks incredible. The movie also launches the characters on a visually spectacular sailing journey in which they encounter bizarre monsters. A few, like giant eels with bright glowing light sources on their bodies, are striking to behold. There are no criticisms to be made regarding the look of the picture. The screenplay, however, is another matter. My minor quibble with the first picture is that the animal characters were only used for sight gags and served no essential story purpose. That hasn’t been addressed in this sequel. Again, the animals are largely oblivious to events or in need of rescue and it still feels like a wasted opportunity. And the plot itself bears similarities to the original story as well. Viewers are told that the island is in danger, but the specifics are vague this time around, which doesn’t add tension to the proceedings. The big miss comes with the Maui character. This fan-favorite does have a few fun lines and one decent musical number, but is pushed to the sidelines for half of the running time. Again, some of the best moments from the original involved interactions between the demigod and protagonist. Keeping them apart for so long is an ill-advised choice. Instead, most of the back-and-forth occurs between Moana and her crew, and less of the humor lands. And central villain Nalo takes the form of a violent storm cloud, which doeцsn’t allow for any interactions or verbal confrontations between the characters. Instead, the tone in this follow-up is darker, with Moana doubting her abilities and the seemingly impossible task that is thrust upon her. The film doesn’t have as much zip or life to it, lending a grimmer tone that will likely scare younger tots rather than entertain them. The visuals on display are breathtaking, but the overall mood didn’t resonate with the child sitting next to me. Towards the end of the second act, she actually whispered, “Dada, let’s go see a different movie.” It’s clear that she’s definitely the daughter of a movie critic. Anyway, the little one did leave (with my wife), while I watched the finale alone. Readers should note this film isn’t for any child under the age of five. But truth be told, I didn’t hear much enthusiasm from older members of the audience either. Moana 2 has a few impressive sights, but is weighed down by its somber tone and doesn’t resonate as strongly as the original. VISIT: WWW.CINEMASTANCE.COM

Timothée Chalamet can definitely sing, as witnessed in the motion-picture musical Wonka, and he’s said to have done his own vocals in the Dylan film.
