An Interview with Gerald Horacek: GMCS Assistant Superintendent Equitable education for all GMCS students “We are working hard to do what’s best and most equitable,” Gallup-McKinley County Schools Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services Gerald Horacek said. “We have taken into account the complexity of what’s going on in our country, and specifically, in our area.”

All public schools in McKinley County are closed for the remainder of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and GMCS is ensuring educational equity for all students through the Distance Learning Initiative. This initiative provides every student (K – 12) a paper packet of materials to be completed at home.

K – 8 students will receive a grade level packet of review materials in the subject matters of English-Language Arts, Reading, and Mathematics. Each packet comes with instructions and helpful guidelines to ensure clarity and success at home. K – 8 students will be automatically promoted to the next grade level for the 2020-2021 school year unless requested otherwise by parents. Horacek said, “We are not penalizing kids. This is not their fault.”

However, 9 – 12 students still need to meet credit requirements in order to move up a grade level. They will receive a paper packet, or “deliverables,” as Horacek refers to them, from every subject matter with coordinating rubrics. Once completed, students could raise their grade by one letter or more. In addition, GMCS is supplying a return envelope for students to submit their work, and their teachers will grade each deliverable accordingly.

The decision to move forward with paper-based learning versus online learning was made in great consideration of GMCS students and families. Many have little to no access to the internet or technology, and Horacek made it clear that it was essential to make it equitable across the board.

“How can you provide online learning to some students and not others?” he asked. The only exception is credit recovery. Students have the option to make up credits online or by means of a paper packet.

Horacek assures GMCS is following the NM Department of Health and CDC guidelines on COVID19. “We’re wearing gloves and taking appropriate measures when packaging items until they are shipped out from our sites,” he says.

Listed on the GMCS website as well as in the student packets are educational resources that parents and students can access online, if they have that capability. Anthonette Cayedito missing since 1986 NEED THE PUBLIC’S HELP

F

ew things can rattle a community like a person going missing. The idea that someone can disappear without a trace and no information about what happened to them can cause a whirlwind of emotions: hope that they will be found safely; worry that no one knows where they are; fear that a bad fate has befallen them.

For long-time residents of Gallup and surrounding areas, those feelings have plagued them for over three decades. April 6 marked the 34th anniversary of the day 9-year-old Anthonette Cayedito was taken from her home in the middle of the night.

Despite a bevy of tips and leads that have come up in the years since, the fate of Cayedito is still unknown.

T I M EL I N E OF T H E INCIDENT The early hours of April 6, 1986 were quiet for a family living on Aztec Avenue. But things would soon take a tragic turn.

This much is known about the sequence of events, which was described by Anthonette’s sister Wendy Montoya to crew and producers of the TV series Unsolved Mysteries: at some point in the middle of the night, Montoya said she heard two men knock on the door. One of them claimed to be their “Uncle Joe.” Montoya said that Cayedito opened the door and was immediately carried off. The men took Cayedito into a brown van that sped away from the residence, and Cayedito has not been seen since.

At the time, Anthonette’s mother, Penny Cayedito, told law enforcement that she last saw her daughter fast asleep in her room at 3 am. Several hours later, she checked in Anthonette’s room again and her daughter was nowhere to be found.

The first major lead was a phone call to Gallup Police Department from a frantic young girl claiming to be Cayedito, telling the dispatcher she was in Albuquerque. It came about a year after the incident.

Before she could give any further information, however, a man yelled at her, then grabbed the phone. The young girl then screamed several times before the call was disconnected.

As part of the Unsolved Mysteries segment that aired in 1992, Penny Cayedito, now deceased, told the crew the voice on the recording was indeed her daughter.

“And just by the way she says her last name, and the way she screamed sends chills all over my body,” she said. “A mother knows, and I know that was her.”

The next major lead came about four years later as a reported sighting of a young girl matching Cayedito’s description in Carson City, Nev. The young girl was seen with a couple at a diner, where she reportedly left a note on a napkin that read “Please help me.” But by the time the waitress saw the note, the couple and young girl were

THE SEARCH CONTINUES While new information and leads have become less common, Frank Fisher, public affairs officer for the FBI Albuquerque Division, said the investigation continues and that Cayedito’s case is very important to them.

“We still occasionally get tips on the case, but we’d like to get a lot more,” Fisher said April 8. “It is why we use the anniversary of her disappearance to get this case back into the public spotlight.”

Fisher said the FBI is urging anyone who has potential information or leads about the case to come forward.

“It’s been 34 years, that’s way too long for someone to be missing,” he said. “It’s time to close this case. It’s time to bring her home.

Her loved ones and the community deserve it. We want to do that for them.”

When asked about the initial investigation, Fisher said the FBI and local law enforcement did everything in their power to track down Cayedito and find out what happened to her.

The search continues for each of those divisions.

“We have not stopped looking for answers,” Fisher said. “We are

Just as it took Montoya several years before she spoke about what she witnessed the night Cayedito disappeared, Fisher said other people who may have seen or heard something at the time may be willing to come forward now.

“Maybe someone wants to get something off their chest. We’re ready to hear them,” he said.

As for the investigative methods used, Fisher said they have used every tool at their disposal in both forensic and psychological investigations to find any potential leads.

“If there is the remote possibility that we could solve this case by using any of the technologies on hand, we wouldn’t hesitate to use them,” he added.

Fisher said the FBI is at the point where they need the public’s help to bring closure and discover

the fate of Cayedito, especially with her case being so tragic.

“This was a precious little girl, 9 years old, who disappeared from her family’s house. That should not happen in this country,” Fisher said. “This case strikes a chord in everyone, particularly parents and people who have relatives. It was such a tragic event, and we want to bring closure to this case.”

It is the sense of justice that drives everyone in the FBI, Fisher added. He also emphasized they will not stop investigating until the case is solved.

“If anybody has any information, no matter how silly or small they think that piece of information is, call us. Let us look into it. Don’t just sit on it,” he said.

In Nov. 2019, an ordinance regarding the LET was voted on by McKinley County voters, asking if they think the county should continue to impose the LET at the maximum amount of six percent, as allowed by state law.

Without the agreement in place, the county is in danger of losing the excise tax.

In a 2018 study, the New Mexico Department of Health found that increasing the Liquor Excise Tax has been shown to decrease drinking, particularly with underage drinkers.

The tax revenue is used for funding education programs and the prevention and treatment of alcoholism and drug abuse in McKinley County.

When asked about the timing of negotiations of where LET funds will be allocated, Decker said they have done the negotiations annually, and are aiming to have this year’s negotiation in May. “This JPA anticipates the

negotiation between the city’s allocation task force, which is the mayor and city appointees, and the county chair and their appointees to determine how the funds will be allocated,” Decker said. “In the last four years, we have tried to do the negotiations during the budget cycle.”

The JPA was approved with a 3-0 vote.

What’s happening at Miyamura High School?

iroshi Miya mura High School is the focus of attention for people f rom FEMA, to the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, to the New Mexico Emergency Operations Center, to the Navajo Nation, to the Rehoboth McKinley Christian Medical Center as it has been designated as the site for a field hospital for between 50 and 60 COVID-19 patients.

The USACE has been given 14 days to have the rooms up at the school. Graff describes them as plastic wall podstyle cubicles located on the gym floor with direct line of site between the pods and the nurse’s station.

Velasquez said.

“The principal, staff, district staff, superintendent, everyone was very supportive and understanding…and having full faith in us. They turned over the keys…really supporting the mission and supporting the community,” she added.

Velasquez is confident that the USACE will complete its part of the project in 14 days.

“Yes!” she said. “We will make it happen.”

I n a n equa l ly resolute tone, Graff made clear that USACE is working hard to support New Mexico’s needs in response to the COVID19 pandemic.

“The state leadership has

been proactive and the coordination between state and federal agencies has been running full speed around the clock,” he said.

After the USACE’s part of the operation, the New Mexico Department of Health will step in to provide beds and medical supplies.

David Morgan, the Media Manager for NMDOH says efforts are underway to gather everything needed, including furniture and equipment with an estimated completion of the project to be before the end of the month.

COVID-19 disrupts detox center at NCI

a’ Nizhoozhi Center, Inc. was notified by Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital

on April 7 that someone in the detox facility tested positive for COVID-19. Executive Director Dr. Kev i n Foley called county authorities and asked them to test people with whom this person had been in

contact.

Foley sa id RMCHCS decided to take the people still left in the NCI detox center in to the hospital and have them wait for their COVID-19 tests.

Conejo said those nurses will receive that pay. But they will not be paid through the end of the contracts, if the dates go beyond the two weeks’ notice.

In hearing the story of Tom Kenyon, one of the nurses in the ER who spoke to the Gallup Sun about not being renewed, Conejo expressed regret.

“It’s the collective effect of everything that’s stopping hospitals. The problem is so massive that we can’t make it right for everyone.”

Kenyon, 55, from Detroit City said he worked for almost a year at RMCHCS. He said April 3 was his last day, but he was expecting it to be April 25.

Kenyon said that cutting ER nurses like himself and midlevel physicians assistants and nurse practitioners would mean long wait times and impacts

He was also concerned about two traveling nurses who he believed had their contracts renewed because they were married to people working in the hospital, one as a radiologist and one who worked in labor and delivery.

Conejo said that if it was necessary to reduce total staff in the ER and someone’s spouse performed a specific procedure the hospital needed, it was prudent

to keep that nurse and move them to an area where more nurses are required.

“They are putting the public in harm’s way. That’s how I see it,” Kenyon said.

Conejo said the hospital is COVID-19 ready, but he views the

cent er wa s clea ned a nd re-opened at 10:30 pm on the same day. There was no lockdown or quarantine.

RMCHCS has made application for financial aid through the state and FEMA. Conejo points out that if the hospital gets a substantial check that may provide enough for its needs. But it all depends on how long COVID-19 lasts.

“If COVID runs through November, a lot of money will go up in smoke,” he said.

In terms of the financial situation, “We’re trying to keep panic from spreading,” Conejo said.

Once the elective procedures stop, so does virtually everything else, so not as many people come in for the ER or lab work. They‘re afraid of going to

the hospital because the COVID might be there.

In other words, the income goes down, but expenses stay up.

“We have sufficient supplies for our normal number of patients. If we get transfers, or a surge, from Crownpoint or Fort Defiance, or an increase in our patients,” Conejo said that’s when PPEs can dwindle.

“We’re reaching out to everyone we can. There are a number of companies contacting us, reaching out to us, too. We had masks that a month ago cost $0.43. Today they cost $10.

How many $10 masks can you afford?”

Then Conejo talked about ventilators.

“We’re low right now, but we’re adequate. But we’re trying to find more.” He didn’t care to venture a guess as to what ventilators might cost.

When he arrived he saw a man leaving the store.

As he approached the front door, manager Anita Spencer said she had been working on stock inventory in the back when she heard the front door bell. Then she heard the cooler door open and she headed for the front of the store.

When she got there she saw a man heading for the exit with two cans of beer and she called out. She said he turned and told her to open the register

Dzilth-Na-O-Dith-Hle, southeast of Farmington, N.M. No one was injured.

T he Nava jo Pol ice Department arrested Todacheene, with the assistance of the San Juan County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office, New Mexico State Police, and FBI, who all responded to the scene.

The FBI took custody of him April 3.

Todacheene had an initial appearance via teleconference in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque April 8.

The public is reminded all defendants are considered innocent unless convicted in a court of law.

Weekly Police Activity Reports NURSE ATTACKED Gallup, April 2 Ga l lup Pol ice O f f icer Timothy Hughte was dispatched to Ga l lup I n d i a n Medical Center in reference to a male being assaulted.

Hughte made contact with James Hayne, charge nurse of the emergency room, who said he was trying to help a male identified as Ashford Rodriguez, 28, of Gallup, when he was hit in the head with a closed fist. Rodriguez had been transported to the hospital by Medstar Ambulance for a high level of intoxication, where he had to be restrained and

eventually sedated due to being combative.

Hughte returned to GIMC later that night after being told Rodriguez was awake and moving. He had no recollection of the incident, nor could he recall why he was in the hospital.

Rodriguez was arrested for assault on a health care worker and was transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked.

He was released on his own recognizance by a judge.

ANGRY BOYFRIEND Gallup, March 30 Gallup Police Officer Jerald Wa t c h m a n w a s approached by a woman outside of Bl a ke’s Ea st, 2666 E. Hwy. 66,

about 5:17 pm in reference to a domestic violence incident.

The woman, identified as Loretta Jim, said she and the passenger, Sean Moore, 24, of Yah-Ta-Hey, said they were coming from a cookout near Jay Street and he had gotten aggressive at the residence after having too much to drink.

The pair was told to leave, at which point Moore got more aggressive. As they were leaving, Moore hit the passenger’s side window and cracked it.

After Jim had stopped, Moore exited the vehicle in an aggressive manner and looked ready to run, but he was grabbed by Jim while Watchman cuffed him. Moore was transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center, where he was uncooperative and verbally abusive toward sta ff. He wa s booked on

Eley noticed a gray Ford truck that was parked at a stop sign at the scene when he arrived. He conducted a traffic stop and spotted the driver, Armondo Spencer, 22, of Mentmore, passed out in the driver’s seat. After not being able to wake Spencer, Eley met Officer Timothy Hughte, who used a vehicle lock out kit to open the passenger door. Eley then woke Spencer, noting an empty bottle of Smirnoff Ice in the vehicle.

As Spencer exited the vehicle, Eley noted he had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and the smell of alcohol coming from his person. When asked where he was coming from, Spencer muttered his responses and Eley was unable to understand him.

Spencer agreed to take the standard field sobriety tests, but failed and was arrested for DWI. He was transported to Gallup Police Department for the breath test, where he posted samples of .19 and .20, before being booked into McKinley County Adult Detention Center.

He was released on his own recognizance by a judge.

Shannon Etcitty March 29, 10:35 pm Aggravated DWI Gallup P o l i c e Officer Caleb K leeberger was on routine patrol when he was dispatched to the area of McKinley Drive and East Aztec Avenue in reference to a reckless driver.

When Kleeberger arrived at the scene, he saw the calling party pointing southward at a green Dodge Dakota stopped in the roadway. Kleeberger pulled up behind the vehicle and made contact with the driver, Shannon Etcitty, 32, of Gallup.

Etcitty said she was heading to Farmington. Kleeberger noted she had watery eyes

and slurred speech as well as

charges of criminal damage to household property.

Moore was released on his own recognizance by a judge.

DINER ASSAULT Gallup, March 30 Gallup Police Officer Jerald Watchman was on call for a woma n needing a s si s t a nce at the L a Quinta Inn, 3880 E. Hwy. 66, about 1:53 pm.

The woman, an employee at the hotel, pointed to a man wearing a poncho outside the nearby Denny’s who was punching the railings and bars outside the restaurant.

Watch ma n ma de cont a ct with the man, later identified as Daniel Flemming, 34, of Mesa, Ariz., and asked why he

was angry and punching the railings.

Apply quickly for federal stimulus loans EIGHTY-ONE DAYS; COUNTING DOWN Staff Reports

ANTA FE - New Mexico small businesses in financial distress due to the COVID-19 crisis are

encouraged to apply as soon as possible for loans made available under the federal stimulus bill.

The stimulus bill, or Cares Act, allocates $349 billion for

and New Mexico small businesses must act as soon as possible to obtain loans,” Economic Development Secretary Alicia Keyes said April 4. “Many businesses struggling through this crisis need a financial bridge to help them survive and recover once this crisis eases.”

There are two loan programs for small businesses under the stimulus bill: the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program and the Paycheck Protection Program.

Under the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program, a small business can borrow up to $2 million, with an immediate grant advance up to $10,000 that can distributed in three days to a business.

Small businesses can apply for the loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/ Applications can also be

made through the SBA’s Small Business Development Centers.

There are 19 centers in New Mexico, and they offer instruction and guidance on how to apply for the loans. The website for the centers is nmsbdc.org Under t he Paycheck Protection Program, a small business can borrow up to $10 million, with an interest rate of 1 percent. The loan is deferrable for six months.

en a t or Tom Ud a l l, D -N.M., joi ned f ive senators in an April 7 a dd re s s to introduce the COVID-19 “Heroes Fund” proposal to give Tribal frontline workers equal access to the proposed $25,000 premium for essential workers and implement the $15,000 Essential Worker Recruitment Incentive to attract and secure the frontline workforce needed to fight the public health crisis.

“Essential frontline workers in New Mexico, Indian Country, and across America are risking their own health to protect ours, to care for our loved ones, and to keep our communities safe and running. We owe these heroes – the health care workers, fi rst responders, law enforcement, grocery clerks, delivery workers, and many

others - more than just words of gratitude: we must make sure they are paid what they deserve,” Udall said.

“Impor ta ntly, this pro posal will give Tribal frontline workers equal access to these benefits, and includes the necessary flexibility to meet the unique needs of Native communities,” Udall continued. ”Because this crisis is hitting Indian Country especially hard: frontline workers in Native communities are stretched thin, and, due to severe federal underfunding, Indian Country has long struggled to recruit and retain workers in fields like health care and law enforcement. So this proposal is absolutely necessary for Indian Country and for all communities - to support the frontline workers who are doing incredible, life-saving work, and to secure the workforce that we

As Congress looks at a potential fourth COVID-19 bill, the following proposal is meant for consideration by Members of Congress, key stakeholders, and the American people. The senate Democrats’ proposal consists of two major components: 1. A $25,000 pandemic premium pay increase for essential frontline workers, equivalent to a raise of an additional $13 per hour from the start of the public health emergency until

December 31.

2. A $15,000 recruitment incentive for health and home care workers and first responders to attract and secure the workforce needed to fight the public health crisis.

The proposa l uses a fl at-dollar amount per hour premium model in order to ensure it is clear, simple, and lifts up par ticularly those workers making lower wages.

It would give each essentia l frontline worker $13/ hour premium pay on top of regular wages for all hours worked in essential industries through the end of 2020.

It would cap the total maximum premium pay at $25,000 for each essential frontline worker ea r ning less tha n $200,000 per year and $5,000 for each essential worker earning $200,000 or more per year.

The Coronavir us Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, signed into law on March 27, provided stabilization funds for states and larger communities, but capped the localities able to receive direct support at those with populations of over 500,000. This excludes

fter announcing a stay-at-home order, ordering all essential businesses to close, and even implementing a nightly curfew, the number of positive COVID-19 cases is still rising on the Navajo Nation.

The Navajo Department of Health and Navajo Area Indian Health Service, in coordination with the Navajo Epidemiology Center, said there are 488 cases on the Navajo Nation as of April 8, with another 62 cases being confi rmed that day.

The 488 cases include the following counties: Navajo County, Ariz.: 186 Apache County, Ariz.: 50

hings will be quiet on the Navajo Nation from 8 am April 10 to 5 am April 12 as the Nation conforms to a 57-hour curfew ordered by the Navajo Department of Health in conjunction with the Nava jo Nation Public Health State of Emergency Declaration (CEM Resolution No. 20-03-11) on

Public Health Emergency Order No. 2020-005 states that due to the community spread of COVID-19, all individuals on the Nation and across the nation shall be at home during curfew hours, except in the event of an emergency.

The curfew does not apply to essential employees reporting to or from work, with official identification and/or a

Navajo police unit stolen, recovered in one day Staff Reports

HIPPOORWILL , Ariz. - A Navajo Police Department vehicle was reported stolen from a Navajo Police officer who was checking on a vehicle parked on the side of the highway at milepost 28 on Navajo Route 4 in Whippoorwill, Ariz.

While checking on the vehicle about 3:52 am April 8, the officer made contact with three male individuals, two of whom were handcuffed and detained in the police unit. The officer was in the process of getting information from the third individual when the office heard loud noises and thereafter the vehicle was stolen. The officer heard three shots fired from the

police unit when it was taken.

The suspects were identified as Jessie Nez from Whippoorwill, Ariz. and Harold Lee, Jr. from Piñon, Ariz.

At approximately 8:40 am, the two suspects were found and arrested. The officer’s rifle was recovered. One of the suspects led officers to the location of the vehicle which was recovered about 9 miles north

of Navajo Route 4 near milepost 22.

“This was an unfortunate situation. We are grateful that our officer was not harmed in the incident. Our officers have been doing an extraordinary job in carrying out the tasks at hand to not only answer calls of service, but to also oversee the public safety duties to ensure community

safety during this emergency.

This is an opportunity for us to remind our personnel that their primar y responsibility is to be safe, so they can respond to the needs of our community.”

All suspects have been booked at t he Nava jo Department of Corrections. At this time, no additional details are available for release.

She had multiple underlying medical conditions. Also, a man in his 90s from Bernalillo County died April 2. The number of COVID-19-related deaths in the state is now seven. There are now 31 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered.

health officials announced 92 additional positive tests for COVID-19, bringing the total to 495. There are 41 individuals hospitalized in the state for the virus. Two deaths were reported - a man in his 80s from Bernalillo County and a man in his 70s from Sandoval County, both of whom had underlying medical problems. Thirty-four cases were designated as having recovered.

Apr i l 4: NMDOH ha s reported an additional 51 positive tests for COVID-19, bringing the total of cases to 543. There was one additional death of a man in his 60s from McKinley County. He had underlying medical conditions. His death brings the number of COVID-19 related deaths in New Mexico to 11. Fifty-four cases of the virus are designated as having recovered. On this date the governor’s office urged small businesses to apply quickly for federal stimulus loans.

April 5: State health officials announced 81 additional positive tests for COVID-19. The cases include tests from the La Vida Llena long-term care facility in Albuquerque, where one additional resident and two additional staff members tested positive. One death was reported in McKinley County from COVID-19 - a man in his 40s who had underlying chronic medical conditions. The number of COVID-19- related deaths in the state is now 12. There are 130 cases designated as having

recovered from the virus.

The total now stands at 686.

The additional positive tests include one resident and two staff members from the La Vida Llena long-term care facility in Albuquerque. There are no new deaths related to the virus.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has officially extended her public health emergency order until at least April 30. The amended order further restricts business operations.

April 7: Health officials in New Mexico announced 109 additional positive tests for COVID-19, bringing the total to 794. The total includes 24 residents and 23 staff members from the La Vida Llena longterm care facility. Extensive testing in San Felipe and Zia pueblos found 52 positive cases in San Felipe and 31 in Zia. One

additional death was counted – a man in his 30s from Bernalillo County who had underlying medical conditions. The number of COVID-19 related deaths is now 13. The state count for recoveries from the virus stands at 171.

April 8: State health officials announced 72 additional positive test results for COVID19, bringing the total to 865.

There are 59 people hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID19. Three more deaths bring the number of virus-related fatalities to 16. They were all from Bernalillo County - a male in his 90s, a female in her 80s, and a second female in her 80s. All had underlying medical conditions. There are 201 recoveries from the virus designated by NMDOH. New Mexicans who exhibit symptoms of COVID- 19 infection, should call their health care provider or the NMDOH COVID-19 hotline immediately at 1-855-600-3453.

he fact that Wal-Mart has many thousands of part-time employees a nd long a go amassed billions of dollars that will outlive them, is not a secret. I shine a light on this to contrast Wal-Mart’s actions, to the actions of Henry Ford, who increased the wages of his employees to the displeasure of his fellow car makers. Ford said this, “I want my employees to have the ability to purchase the cars that they are building.”

This part time employment, that continues, has existed since Wa lMa r t a r r ived in Gallup – many Navajo government administrations ago.

The Navajo government has long reneged on their promise

to be a voice for the voiceless – part time WalMart employees cannot complain without fear of dismissal. The Navajo government’s silence is deafening.

Martin Luther King Jr. was assaulted many times by those that were sworn to “serve and protect.” His house was bombed. He was bitten by police dogs. He went to jail many times. He was stabbed, and finally he was assassinated.

He also led from the front.

The Navajo government could be leaders in fact, and not in name only, by leading a boycott that would result in full time employment for the people that continues to provide them with a living wage and a lifetime pension, by hiring them with their votes.

Taking up space is not the standard for leadership, results is. One hundred percent of Indian jewelry is made by Native Americans; One hundred percent of the stores that sell this jewelry are owned by non-natives. There are also 250 millionaires in “the Indian Capital,” not one Native among them.

One hundred percent of exposure deaths in this area are Native Americans, many veterans among them. The majority of the people in the NCI, the jail, the homeless, the unemployed, the exploited Wal-Mart employees and customers are Native Americans.

If you need groceries, medication, or other necessary items we urge you to take every precaution,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Please only send one family member to purchase items â&#x20AC;&#x201C; do not take children [or elders] into stores or public places.â&#x20AC;?

The daily curfew implemented on March 30 remains in effect from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am.

With both Good Friday and Easter coming up during the 57-hour curfew, the Nez-Lizer Administration issued a proclamation April 8 designating the weekend as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Navajo Nation Family Prayer Weekend.â&#x20AC;?

Nez and Lizer encourage families to pray together for family members, neighbors, health care workers, governing officials, and those who are sick, and the families who have lost loved ones due to COVID19 on the Navajo Nation. hile the idea of cutting oneself off from the moder n world may seem appealing, doing so by way of a cult is a less than advisable life choiceâ&#x20AC;Ś especially if you happen to be a woman. So says the lowkey chiller The Other Lamb, which depicts an independent community of people on their own in the wilderness. The story is intriguing, examining a changing dynamic within the group after spending years off the grid and following orders from their leader. Still, the fi lm takes a very mannered and minimalist approach. While interesting, its cold and distant

tone can leave viewers adrift from the proceedings.

The tale focuses on Selah (Raffey Cassidy), a teenage girl who was born within the cult run by its only male member, Shepherd (Michael Huisman).

The figurehead lords over his many wives and daughters, telling them stories and giving them instructions on how to live. With womanhood approaching, Selah is a prominent devotee of Shepherd, f lattered by her guardianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention and praise. He compliments her beauty and devotion to his teachings and the cause (whatever that might be). However, not every member is pleased with their lifestyle. One of the estranged wives named Sarah (Denise Gough) begins to converse with Selah and she eventually begins to question Shepherd and his gospel.

trapped in what could almost be considered the web of a spider. Early on, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impossible to determine when the fi lm is set and this strange timelessness creates a sense of unease.

Of course, when the camp is forced to fi nd a new place to live and members briefly cross paths with non-members, an effective contrast between themselves and the outside world is created.

Performances are strong, w it h Ca s sidy m a k i ng a n impression as the teen who slowly begins to doubt her fearless leader. Most of the cast is captured using long takes and close-ups. It takes a great deal of skill to keep the attention of viewers while cast members stare quietly at each other and contemplate their place in this world. And early on, one fi nds the predicament of the lead character fascinating. After all, she knows very little about the outside world and can only believe what she has been told by an unreliable narrator who may be planning an incestuous future with his favorite child.

However, the story takes almost no unexpected twists and turns and feels a little too simple for a feature. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very clear that the movie is critiquing power-hungry leaders and the patriarchy as the females within the family are abused and demeaned for disobeying Shepherd. Yet as presented, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s often difficult to get a sense of what draws

the group members to their leader. As written, he pays his wives and daughters a compliment or two, but has an icy quality, even before his actions turn openly violent. He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem particularly charismatic or charming, and it would have been interesting to understand how a nasty figure could start such a cult and invoke extreme devotion in others.

Instead, Shepherdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motivations are obvious in that he wants nothing more than to maintain authority commanding an all-female cult and producing more offspring to serve him. As a result, one struggles with the motivations of the cult members and their slow response as events worsen. Perhaps itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meant to display the mundanity of evil, but it takes an extremely long time for the daughters to understand the gravity of the situation and attempt to take action. Beyond it being well shot, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing about the story itself that will surprise or shock.

In the end, I admired this feature on a technical level, but also found the chilly tone and approach emotionally distancing. As such, my investment in the story wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as strong as it could have been.

The Other Lamb is a wellmade and performed feature, but one that is difficult to feel a deep attachment or devotion toward.

ello and welcome to another look at h ig h l ig ht s a r r iving on Blu-ray and DVD. Stuck inside? Some exciting documentaries are on the menu. Since you likely can’t make it out to the movies this week, why not give one of these titles a try?

Big New Releases!

The Cold Blue - The 8th A i r Force Division who fought i n Wo r l d War II is the subject of this remarka ble do c u ment a r y.

T h i s u n it was sent on several suicide missions, flying over enemy lines. Nine of the survivors appear in the film to recount some of the events they experienced in 1943. The movie also uses recently discovered, never-before-seen footage shot by filmmaker William Wyler (who would go on to make Roman Holiday, The Big Country and Ben-Hur) and his crew during several of their dangerous raids.

The press raved about this non-fiction feature. They all thought that this was an exceptional tribute and concluded that the stories and new footage put viewers right in the middle of the action, helping them to understand exactly what these brave aviators went through.

This picture earned solid notices from critics. A few did comment that while the story was inspiring, it played out in too familiar a manner and the use of many tropes diminished its impact. Still, the majority admired the performances and thought that the film developed plenty of tension over its running time. Daniel Radcliffe, Daniel Webber, Ian Hart and Mark Leonard Winter headline the feature.

Overall, critics appeared to like this independent drama.

Some did state that the movie was too low-key for its own good and wouldn’t make a lasting impression. Still, more suggested that the subtle approach worked and provided viewers with an authentic-feeling in taking on a complicated situation. The Rest of Us - This story is about a woma n whose l i fe changes dramatically follow i ng the sudden death of her ex-husband.

While attending the funeral, she meets her ex’s widow and children.

Discovering that the surviving family is in debt and about to lose their house, the protagonist invites them all to stay with her clan. The situation ends up revealing past secrets and forces the surviving members

The Woman Who Loves G iraffe s Anne Innis Dagg may be the very first person ever to study animal behavior. In fact, her research predated J a n e Goodall and Dian Fossey, writing numerous papers in 1956 about her time spent with chimpanzees in Africa, before undertaking complex studies of giraffes. This documentary details the woman’s life and work, as well as her struggles receiving recognition as a female scientist and her work as an activist. It also shows how long it took for those in academia to take her studies seriously.

This documentary has yet to receive a negative review.

While some thought that the storytelling approach was a bit old-fashioned, yet they couldn’t help but be amazed and drawn in by the woman’s incredible work and the lack of recognition she has received for it. Dagg tells her own story, assisted with some voice-over

G a l l u p P o l i c e Officer Cindy Romancito was dispatched to the area of 700 U.S. Hwy. 491 and was advised the suspect vehicle had pulled into the parking lot of Gallup Dentistry.

Romancito made contact with the witness, A nimal C o n t r ol O f f ic e r T i f f a ny Hubbard, who told Romancito she had noticed the driver of the red truck slumped over the wheel near Munoz Overpass and he almost hit her vehicle.

She made contact with the driver, noting a smell of liquor coming from inside the vehicle, and told him she would follow him into a nearby parking lot.

Blasts from the Past!

There are loads of interesting new Blu-rays arriving this week.

Kino has a large selection of early classics arriving on Bluray. They include the Marlene Dietrich romantic comedy, Angel (1937), the Gary Cooper adventure flick, Beau Geste (1939), and another Oscar-nominated title featuring the star called The General Died at Dawn (1936).

All three have been given new 4K masters and include trailers and detailed film historian commentaries to give viewers plenty of analysis and background information on the titles.

The distributor is also putting out a Blu-ray of The Great Leap (1926), a German romantic comedy set i n t he Dolom ites mountain range starring Leni Riefenstahl before she beca me a notor ious documentarian who made propaganda films for the Nazis.

This release also includes a commentary with a film historian.

On a lighter note, you can also pick up another Gary Cooper picture with The Lives of a Bengal Lancer (1935).

They are also releasing the Fred MacMurray crime-comedy, Murder, He Says (1945).

The well-regarded feature won s e v e r a l a w a r d s dur ing its original run and the disc boasts a high defin it ion d ig it a l restorat ion supervised by the director of photography, a film scholar aud io com ment a r y, i nterv iews from 2007 with the cinematographer and editor, publicity materials, as well as on-set footage and archival talks with the cast and crew.

Finally, Film Movement has a Blu-ray box set called Alastair Sim’s School for Laughter: 4 Classic Comedies.

It includes the British comedies The Belles of St. Trinian’s (1954), School for Scoundrels (1960), Laughter in Paradise (1951) and Hue and Cry (1947) and is said to include more than two hours of bonus features.

Virgil Watson, 56, of Gallup.

Watson had glossy eyes and slurred his speech as he spoke with Romancito. He agreed to take the standard field sobriety tests, but failed and was placed under arrest. After the background check was conducted, Romancito learned Watson had three prior DWIs a nd his license had been suspended.

Officer Nicole Diswood arrived on scene to assist two other passengers out of

the truck, both of whom were transported to Gallup Detox.

No insurance or registration papers were found in the vehicle, and a one-liter bottle of Importer’s Vodka was located under the driver’s seat.

Wat son a g reed t o t he breath test and posted samples of .22, .19, and .20. He was transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked.

He was released on his own recognizance by a judge.

The Grey Area: Mandatory Student Training has an undergraduate general session currently scheduled for 2 pm May 1 at SSTC 200 at UNM-Gallup (705 Gurley Ave.).

City of Gallup Community Providers meeting for April 30 may be canceled (updates forthcoming).

Low cost Spay and Neuter Days at the Gallup-McKinley County Humane Society (1315 Hamilton Rd., Gallup) have been postponed. Procedures are still being conducted, however they are scheduled out through May 1. For the time being no new spay and neuter surgeries are being scheduled.

The phones are still active and emergency calls will receive a response, and the crew

continues feeding the animals at the shelter. However, Cosy Balok, Supervisor for Animal Control for the City of Gallup, is asking people to hold onto animals and contact their own veterinarians if there is a medical need. Only animals who must be euthanized will be taken in. Since the GallupMcKinley County Humane Society is a no-kill shelter, only animals who cannot be saved are euthanized. Throughout the year, the shelter has sent more than 3,500 animals to larger locations in Arizona, Utah and Colorado for adoptions. Those facilities are not taking transported animals at this time. In order to remain a no-kill facility, the shelter needs to provide enough space for the animals currently in its care.
