Shaping up the greens FOX RUN GOLF COURSE PREPARES TO RE-OPEN

ox Run Golf Course has been closed for maintenance since March 9, but it will be reopening on April 11.

The greens are looking a little yellow after winter, so golf course staff is preparing to plant more grass seed so that the golf course will evolve into a green splendor.

“We’ve been doing a lot of prep so when the seed is ava i lable, we have t he oppor t u n it y t o hu r r y up and plant it and get it in the ground,” Alcala said. “The biggest thing that we have been doing is really getting a lot of these soils that are basically salt-affected and

According to Alcala, grass seed is at an all-time high right now. A pound of it costs about $8 or $9 right now.

A lca la sa id nor ma lly it would cost about $1 or $1.50 a pound, but inf lation and supply cha i n is sues have caused the increase. He said his suppliers are hoping that the price will be back to normal come fall.

“There’s a long-term plan in place now that’s going to be a per ma nent f i x now,” Alcala said. “[The water pipeline] issue will no longer be the reason we can’t continue to improve the course.”

The project will be broken into sections. The first section already has funding, and construction will start this winter, according to Alcala.

It will cover the north side of the golf course.

The price tag for the first section is $750,000.

“That’s where a majority of our leaks [occur],” Alcala sa id. “I wou ld say some where between 60 to 70% of all of our leaks are in this section that’s going to be replaced this coming winter hopefully.”

Right now the golf course has temporary pipes put in place above ground. The permanent pipes will be underground. The golf course will be using reclaimed water to

The second section of the project will cover the west side of the golf course. Alcala is hoping the city council will approve the second part of the project soon enough that

it can be started in the next year or so. The council discussed the golf course and the improvements that need to be made to it during their strategic planning sessions back in February.

“Usually these processes

ca n take up to f ive yea rs just to find funding for, so we really focused on trying to get that done,” Alcala said.

He said he hopes the water pipeline project is completed i n t he nex t t wo or t h ree years.

retention, especially from the local population, are top challenges for the department, while substance abuse and related crimes are the biggest challenge for the community at large.

Approaches to the staffi ng problems broke down into two main categories: community outreach and internship programs for recruiting, and the more sensitive topic of training a reserve posse to help fi ll in the gaps.

“I would support that, but I would really watch how they are trained and their understanding of what they can and can’t do,” Henio said. He and others were mindful of confusion that volunteers caused at BLM protests in recent years.

“If we do start it we need to make sure they are trained not only in McKinley County but in the State of New Mexico,” Lucero said. “We really need to have a program, especially in times like now when we are 10 deputies short.”

Ma r t i nez ag reed. “ T he biggest thing for me is how we train them,” he said, adding that reserves should get

academy training. “When a liability issue comes up there will be questions about who trained them and where they were trained.”

Maiorano said reser ves should be deployed only in specific situations, such as support for search and rescue operations, parades and special events. “We are involved in revamping the program and the training for it,” he said.

Hug hba n k s noted t hat reserve programs can also ser ve a s fa r m t ea m s for recruiting sworn personnel.

Community policing was another idea that got broad endorsement. “ We c a n’ t b e s i t t i n g around waiting for the next call,”Hughbanks, a retired deputy a nd owner of Red Rock Security & Patrol, said.

He also noted that crime prevention starts with “teaching our kids, starting at a young age. Teaching what’s right and what’s wrong.”

Lucero said the department should put more into i nt er a genc y cooper at ion, including with the federal alphabet soup – DEA, FBI,

Customs & Border Patrol, Homela nd Secu r it y a nd others.

Some of those agencies can help overcome jurisdictional boundaries that limit county deputies, and may also be sources of fi nancial support, he said. “You can curb this problem we’re having if we work together.”

Ma r t i nez appea led for c o m p a s s io n a t e p ol ic i n g , including steering arrestees to diversion programs when possible. “We need to help these people. They might be criminals to us, but we need to be out there helping them.

I have relatives out there,” he said. “We need to meet them halfway and meet the community halfway.”

Hughbanks also suggested setting up a constable program on the reservations to help handle low-risk situations with improved response times. Constables could also be cross-trained to respond to social and minor medical situations, he said.

Apartments for teachers GMCS USES HOUSING INCENTIVES TO RETAIN, DRAW QUALITY STAFF

chool districts across the nation are experiencing staff shortages.

According to Nationa l Education

a

Association survey that was published on Feb. 1, 74% of the teachers surveyed said they’ve had to fi ll in for colleagues or take on other duties because of a staff shortage. While 55% of the teachers interviewed said they plan to leave the

profession sooner than they originally planned because of the pandemic.

T he Ga l lup -McK i n ley County Schools district is trying to counter this national exodus from the profession and the area’s housing shortage by building housing specifically for teachers.

“As many people are aware, Gallup has a significant housing problem, and it’s not just a pricing problem; it is actually a lack of available units,” GMCS’s Assistant Supervisor of Business Services Jvanna Hanks III said during the March 28 school board meeting. “So this is going to be a great benefit to the district in order to continue to retain those quality staff that we need for all of our students.”

In an email to the Sun, Hanks said the apartments the district is funding will be located near Clay Street in Gallup.

She said 152 apartments would be built, and the building plans include on-site storage, a community building, and

Construction is slated to start in the fall.

The distr ict ha s been building new teacherages since 2002, but this particular set of apartments has been in the planning stages for three years. Hanks said the district is just now in the fi nal stages of securing the property and

finalizing funding and the design. The district is still tallying up the fi nal costs for the project.

The apartments will be available to GMCS certified instructional staff.

Hanks noted that the district is also working on additional duplexes in Crownpoint, Tohatchi, and Navajo.

Land swap satisfies both city, GMCS needs

T

he City of Gallup and the Gallup-McKinley County Schools are finalizing a land swap that will solve problems for both sides while helping to keep expenses down.

The entities will be swapping the school district’s 4.4-acre Bus Barn property, which it no longer uses, for a 10.7-acre wedge of city land adjacent to Rocky View Elementary School.

Despite the difference in size, the properties appraised within $10,000 of value because the smaller property includes structures, and the larger parcel is in a more desirable location along Boardman Avenue.

City Attorney Curtis Hayes called the swap “one of those situations where everything falls into place at the right time. The school district has exactly what we need, which is property next

The city will use the secure Bus Barn property for an impound lot and indoor storage for evidence. For its part, the school district will use its patch of dirt to build grant-funded teacher housing.

“For anyone who’s trying to recruit professionals to this community, housing is a problem,” Hayes said.

The school board approved the deal at its March 28 meeting

and City Council assented in a special meeting April 5.

Before the deal closes, expected around the end of June, the city will expedite surveying and subdividing the school district lot from a larger 80-acre parcel, and re-zoning the lot the city is giving up for housing.

Funding for the city to build a new public safety building will become available July 1, Hayes said.

Weekly Police Activity Reports ANOTHER STRIKE FOR PILL PUSHER Gallup, March 28 A Gallup man with a previous narcotics violation wa s c au g ht with almost 40 grams of cou nt erfeit fentanyl, along with a list of other drugs.

On March 28, around 11:39 am, Gallup Police Officer Brandon Salazar was on duty when he saw a tan GMC Yukon roll through a stop sign at the

intersection of Santa Rita and Ray Avenues.

When he got to the passenger side wi ndow, Salazar recognized the driver as Patrick Chiapetti, 25, from Gallup.

Salazar noticed Chiapetti seemed nervous. According to Salazar’s report, Chiapetti was on probation for a previous narcotics violation.

Salazar asked to search the SUV, and Chiapetti gave him permission.

During his search, Salazar reached under the SUV’s center console, where he found a plastic baggie with blue pills

inside it. According to his report, Salazar believed the pills were counterfeit fentanyl pills. Once he found the pills, Salazar detained Chiapetti and placed him in the back of his patrol car.

Salazar continued searching the SUV and found a M&P Shield 9MM pistol under the center console. He also found a bag of meth in the car and more blue pills, which he identified as Xanax.

Salazar took the money that Chiapetti had on him and put it with the drugs as evidence.

Chiapetti had almost $5,000

on him, along with almost 40 grams of counterfeit fentanyl, 28.4 grams of meth, and 15.4 grams of Xanax.

Chiapetti was charged with three counts of trafficking a controlled substance and one count of illegally possessing a firearm. His preliminary examination is scheduled for April 13.

ne Chu rch R o ck ma n decided to drive while intoxicated, and caused a multi-vehicle collision.

On April 1, Gallup Police Officer Matthew Strandy was

dispatched to the intersection of Highway 491 and Maloney Avenue due to a white Ford truck that had caused a six vehicle accident. The driver: Gary Largo of Church Rock.

According to the caller, several people had been injured and the driver of the truck was

trying to flee the scene.

When Strandy got to the scene around 9:06 pm, he saw several vehicles that all had major damage.

According to the criminal complaint he filed, Strandy began checking each person who was involved in the crash

Strandy was able to talk to one of the drivers of the vehicles. The female victim explained that the man in the white Ford truck was trying to leave the scene, and he kept putting his truck in reverse.

However, his truck’s front end was severely damaged, so he was unable to leave.

After talking to the female victim, Strandy approached the white F-150 truck. He saw a Native American man, who was later identified as Largo in

the driver seat.

When Strandy opened the truck’s driver side door, he could smell alcohol coming from the vehicle and Largo himself. He leaned in to speak to Largo, who complained of chest pain. When Largo spoke, Strandy could smell alcohol on his breath.

Strandy also noticed an open 12 oz. can of Coors Light on the floor board by Largo’s feet.

Largo stayed in the truck because Strandy was worried that he might have a chest

Alexander Claw March 3, 3:26 am Aggravated DWI (Fourth) Driving with a suspended license plate led to a Black Hat man, Alexander Claw, 31, being arrested and charged with his

fourth DWI. Gallup Officer Iris Martinez was conducting routine patrols on Highway 66 when she saw a gray Chevrolet passenger car with a New Mexico license plate. Martinez ran the plate through Metro Dispatch, who advised her it was suspended.

She turned to follow the vehicle, pulling it over and conducting a traffic stop near D&D Motor Co., 401 W. Hwy. 66.

She met the driver, Claw, and began questioning him.

As he spoke, Martinez noticed several signs of intoxication from Claw, including a smell of alcohol inside the vehicle and bloodshot eyes. He was asked to exit the vehicle and had difficulty standing on his own.

Claw said he consumed one Four Loko several minutes prior to being stopped and was traveling to Mentmore. He agreed to take the Standard

Field Sobriety Tests but eventually stopped following directions and said he can’t do the tests.

Based on the investigation and his test performance, Martinez determined Claw was unfit to drive and placed him under arrest. A search of the vehicle revealed an open pint of Importer’s.

Due to the priors on his record, a blood draw was necessary for Claw. The warrant was signed by Magistrate Judge Virginia Yazzie and Martinez transported Claw to Rehoboth Christian Hospital for the blood draw before taking him to McKinley County Adult Detention Center where he was booked for aggravated DWI (fourth), no license or insurance, and consuming alcohol in a vehicle.

The preliminary examination is set for April 13.

Pine Hill man arraigned for child sexual abuse Staff Reports

LBUQUERQUE – Leonard Yazzie, 39, of Pine Hill, N.M., a nd a n en rol led member of the Navajo Nation, was arraigned in federal court today on a charge of aggravated sexual abuse of a child in Indian Country. Yazzie will remain in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for April 7.

According to the indictment, on March 28, 2016, and March 27, 2017, Yazzie allegedly engaged in a sexual act with a victim,

identified as Jane Doe. At the time, Jane Doe was under 12 years old. The abuse is alleged to have occurred on the Ramah Navajo Reservation.

An indictment is only an allegation. A defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted, Yazzie faces a minimum of 30 years and up to life in prison.

Early Birds A new s t udy reveals that some birds in the American Midwest are now laying their eggs about a month earlier than they did a century ago, with a steadily warming climate pointed to as the cause. Led by Chicago’s Field Museum, a team compared century-old eggs preserved in the museum’s unique collection with recent avian observations.

Each egg is accompanied by a label, noting the kind of bird and precisely where and when it was collected. A third of the 72 species studied around Chicago now lay their eggs about 25 days earlier than they did a century ago. The gradual shift to an earlier spring has resulted in large impacts on animal and plant life cycles. Scientists believe this is responsible for the steep decline in bird populations since the 1970s.

Bitcoin mining by massive arrays of servers around the world consumes an oversized amount of electricity as its network verifies secure transactions with extremely complex puzzles. It is estimated that the process already consumes as much energy as Sweden, and its drain on global power grids is growing. But Greenpeace and other environmental groups say that a coding switch could greatly reduce Bitcoin’s energy consumption.

The campaign, Change the Code Not the Climate, points to the coding soon to be adopted by rival cryptocurrency Etherium that will slash its power consumption by 99%. Campaign spokesman Michael Brune says energy demand from bitcoin mining has been responsible for dirty coal plants and gas power plants being revived at a time when the world is struggling to reduce its carbon footprint.

observed the driver falling off the motorcycle while stopped [at the light] and observed the driver having trouble” standing up his motorcycle.

When Chischilly pulled the driver over, she realized it was her supervisor, Yazzie.

As Solis-Torres was getting the background information from Molina, he saw Yazzie trying to put his sweater on backwards while swaying and stumbling.

Next, he asked Yazzie if he’d been drinking, and he admitted that he had consumed alcohol before he hopped on his motorcycle.

According to Solis-Torres’s report, Yazzie appeared to be drunk. Solis-Torres determined that Yazzie was not able to drive and arrested him for his fi rst DWI, aggravated, as he refused to take standard field sobriety tests and the alcohol breath test.

In an interview with the Sun on April 6, Gallup Police’s Patrol Capt. Erin ToadlenaPablo explained that Yazzie was placed under administrative leave after his arrest.

“When we have an employee involved in an incident as far as a policy violation – or when you look at someone who in this case was arrested – the person is placed on administrative leave and of course our internal affairs gathers information and we look at that,” Toadlena-Pablo said.

Yazzie will be on administrative leave until the investigation into his case is resolved.

His pre-trial hearing is scheduled for May 4.

Pueblo, N.M. Her injuries were consistent with a hit-and-run crash.

didn’t have any pliers or bolt cutters on him. That’s when the business owner went back to the red car and dug out some pliers.

Diswood tried to explain that it would be difficult to charge Williams with breaking

and entering because of his story and the fact that he didn’t have the pliers on him when she found him. She did, however, tell the business owner that she would charge Williams with trespassing.

Diswood that Williams had a warrant out for his arrest. She transported him back to the McKinley County Detention Center, where he was charged with trespassing. His pre-trial hearing is scheduled for April 14.

The woman was able to exit her car uninjured, however her car had major front-end damage.

A second victim said her car was hit after Largo had hit the other vehicles. She had also been trying to make a left turn.

The woman was taken to the hospital for some minor injuries to her right wrist. Her car had major damage to the

front of it.

A third v ictim became involved when Largo’s truck struck the driver’s side of his vehicle while he was also trying to make a left turn. The rear axle from the driver’s side of the man’s car had fallen off, which meant the man could no longer drive his car. The man had no injuries and left the scene with his uncle.

A fourth victim was hit by the second victim’s car, which caused damage to the driver’s side door. The victim’s car’s front end was also damaged,

but she was able to drive away from the scene. She had no injuries.

The fi fth victim was waiting to turn left onto Maloney Avenue when she saw the collision happen. The second victim’s car ended up hitting her car, which left damage to the driver’s side door.

Although the front end of the fi fth victim’s car was damaged, she was able to drive away on her own, and she didn’t have any injuries.

T he f i n a l v ic t i m wa s stopped at the red light when

the accident happened. The third victim’s car made contact with the fi nal victim’s car, causing damage to the driver’s side doors.

The final victim had no injuries and was able to drive away.

Ba sed on t he v icti ms’ reports and what he saw at the scene, Strandy was able to conclude that Largo was at fault for the crash. According to Strandy’s report, Largo will be summoned into court for a DWI, failure to yield, and reckless driving. A court date hasn’t been set as of publication.

Obituary Jeffery Everett Hammons, of Gallup, NM died Feb. 7, 2022. He was 66. He was born in St. Louis, MO on Oct. 25, 1955. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Dale Hammons and his mother, Angeline Ramo Hammons.

He is survived by his three children, Suzanne, Gregory, and Thomas, ex-wife Laura, sisters Amy, Suzanne, and Betsy, brothers Chris and Scott and numerous nieces and nephews, all of who agreed that Jeff was the “favorite uncle”.

ANTA FE – A new water benefit, the Low-Income H o u s e h o l d Wa t e r Assistance Program, is available to help households with water and wastewater costs, announced the New Mexico Human Services Department.

LIHWAP is a temporary, federally-funded water assistance program for low-income households to help offset the costs of water and wastewater bills.

Payments will be made to vendors on behalf of households.

Eligible households may receive a benefit of up to $1,500 each to pay for reconnection of services and for arrearages.

This includes all past due amounts, reconnection fees if applicable, and associated late fees.

Customers who are current with their water and wastewater bill and meet the eligibility requirements may also apply for the benefit. New Mexico will prioritize eligibility for households without water or wastewater services due to a disconnection, and those in imminent danger of disconnection.

TWO GMCS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN NEW MEXICO FILM FESTIVAL

N

ew Mexico students are getting a chance to show off what they can do behind a camera. Film Prize Jr. originally started in 2016 in Louisiana.

The competition allows students ages 14-18 to turn in films between three to 10 minutes long.

The Gallup-McKinley County Schools has two students from Hiroshi Miyamura High School competing in Film Prize Jr. Aloni Herrea’s, a 16-year-old sophomore, fi lm is called “My Other Half.”

In an interview with the Sun, Herrea explained that the film is about a girl who has just entered her senior year of high school.

She’s always been quieter than her peers and more reserved, and she wants to become a more outgoing person, so she creates this other personality. Finally, however, she realizes that the change might not be what she wanted.

Herrea said her passion for fi lmmaking started when she took a broadcasting class back in middle school.

“Ever since then I’ve always had a big interest in fi lm and putting mov ies together,” Herrera said. “So, this year when my film and digital media teacher asked me if I wanted to do a competition film I jumped

on the opportunity to do something a little bit more advanced than what I’d been used to.”

Megan James, a 17-year-old junior at Miyamura High School, is also competing in Film Prize Jr. Her film is called “The Sound of Drums.”

James explained that her film is about a boy on a Native American reservation who is trying to figure out his passion in life. He soon meets another boy who reminds him that he’s still young and has time to figure out what he loves. By the end of the movie, the main character finds his passion: powwow.

“The bigger message behind the story is about how hard it is for kids, especially on the reservation, how hard it is for them to navigate through life, especially being secluded on a reservation,” James said.

James said that the film has given her a chance to learn more about her Native culture and connect with her family.

Her cousin Rising Sun Dancing Eagle Chief plays the main character.

“I think my favorite part has been learning more about my culture and being around so much indigenous excellence [...],” James said.

She said she hopes her film shows people what it’s like to live on a Native reservation.

RATING:  OUT OF  RUNNING TIME: 139 MINUTES This feature from A24 opens at movie theaters in most markets on April 8, 2022.

As a movie critic, I’m often harsh in my evaluations. After all, it is my job to take note of problems and assess what I see for readers. I focus in on minute details and comment about pacing issues, tonal inconsistencies and a lack of clear focus.

But sometimes, a film is just so darn odd and eccentric that one can’t help but give it a pass.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a unique experience and one that jarringly throws together outrageous, off-color humor with earnest discourses about the importance of family. It doesn’t all work, but it is well-intentioned and enough of a wild and crazy ride to make up for any shortcomings.

Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) is a middle-aged laundromat owner both overwhelmed and disappointed with her life.

Focused on her business, she has little time for her genial husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) and has a tense relationship with her gay daughter, Joy (Stephanie Hsu).

In addition to the chaotic business, Evelyn is dealing with the arrival of grouchy family patriarch Gong Gong (James Hong) and a tax audit.

After being called in to the IRS to deliver paperwork to Deirdre Beaubeirdra (Jamie Lee Curtis), the lead is approached by a man claiming to be “Alpha” Waymond. He explains that he is a version of her husband from an alternate timeline.

It seems that someone has put the entire universe in danger and is also hunting down various Evelyns in parallel universes. He asks the skeptical protagonist to help him save the world.

There are a lot of amusing moments as various rules about jumping through timelines are explained. It seems that Evelyn has led various different lives in pa rallel COMMUNITY

When threats arise, she attempts to jump to another timeline and instantly gain the abilities necessary to save her in the present world. And some great humor arises from the fact that Waymond believes this Evelyn to be full of unexplored potential (and potentially a savior) because she is the worst and least accomplished version of herself.

The movie also benefits from a few alternate realities with unexpectedly surreal elements.

The movie profits from a strong cast. Michelle Yeoh is famous for her work in Hong Kong action films alongside the likes of Jackie Chan. But she is also a charismatic actress, creating and differentiating different character personalities onscreen, in addition to displaying stupendous martial arts skills.

The focus here seems to be on comedy even when the star is doing battle, but there are plenty of impressive and elaborate leaps, punches and moves.

Quan also makes a wonderful impression as Waymond.

He’s often belittled by those around him for his sweet but simple personality and it’s a real contrast from the Alpha version and other Waymonds who appear over the course

of the story. Additionally, his speech towards the close of the picture resonates and makes a strong impact.

The mov ie is frenetic, at tempting to squeeze in exposition, jokes, action and a message at a hyperactive rate.

It’s hard to keep up with at times and the pacing becomes exhausting during certain sequences over the extended running time.

There’s so much going on that it even feels like the movie has a few endings as Evelyn

resolves issues with family members. And the fi lmmakers also can’t help but cut away from the central storyline to also provide closure for the ridiculous alternate worlds.

Again, some tangents get a laugh, but other gags are puerile and take away from the impact of the resolution.

These issues may only be an initial response to being overloaded during the fi rst viewing and perhaps the tonal shifts are much cleaner and clearer during second showings. There

is a lot, and perhaps too much at times, that is going on in this feature.

Still, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is unlike anything you’re likely to see at the movies this year.

The characters are interesting and amidst all of the chaos, there are some great moments.

If you’re looking for something a little different at the cinema, this title will certainly fit the bill.

Blu-ray/DVD Roundup for April 8, 2022

elcome to another look at the latest highlights arriving on Blu-ray and DVD. This is a big week with some high-profi le features, as well as interesting international and independent fare.

So, if you can’t or shouldn’t be heading out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

BIG NEW RELEASES! DEATH ON THE NILE: The newest adapt at ion of t he Agatha Christie mystery novel sees detective Hercule Poirot visiting Egypt and being invited to a lavish wedding. Naturally, someone of note is murdered during the elaborate ceremony. After questioning the attendees, it becomes clear that everyone may have harbored some illwill towards the victim, making the lead’s job all the more difficult.

This feature received more positive write-ups than negative ones. Those who didn’t care for it found it hammy and unmemorable. Still, more were impressed by the cast and production value on display. They called it a fun and agreeable thriller and appreciated the added backstory for the protagonist.

The movie can be picked

up as a 4K UHD and regular Blu-ray set, or one can purchase the Blu-ray on its own.

It stars Kenneth Branagh, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Emma Mackey, Annette Bening, Tom Bateman, Ali Fazal, Russell Br a nd , S oph ie Okonedo, Letitia Wright, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders.

DESPERATE RIDERS: In this western, a grizzled loner rescues a young man from a card-game shootout.

The new acquaintance tells the man that his mother has been kidnapped by an outlaw and that he needs help protecting the rest of his family.

The tough guy agrees and the duo try to hunt down the nasty fi gure. Along the way, they team up with a woman who has escaped the killer and is looking for revenge.

Not many have seen this picture, but a couple of reviews have popped up online. These notices haven’t been overly complimentary, calling the stor y routine and predictable. They also suggest that everyone involved appeared to be simply going through the motions. It features Trace Adkins, Drew Waters, Vanessa L ee E v iga n, S a m A shby, Victoria Pratt, Cowboy Troy and Tom Berenger.

THE ICE DEMON: A man is found in the middle of a snowy forest and is taken to a hospital in a coma. His ex-wife is called in, who reports that she hasn’t seen or heard from him in over 10 years. She and their daughter talk to the

figure in his hospital bed and try to wake him up.

Meanwhile, the woman’s current partner is displeased and distressed by the situation. Further tension arises when supernatural events begin occurring within their household.

This Russian foreign-language feature hasn’t been seen by many in this part of the world. There have been a small number of negative reviews posted on websites.

They complain that the pacing is slow, focusing too much on family drama and also suggest the decisions and actions of the characters are illogical and unrelatable. Alina Babak, Olga Lomonosova, Aleksey Rozin, Gleb Kalyuzhnyy and Igor Khripunov headline the picture.

THE IMMORTAL: Those looking for more world cinema can also try this feature from France. This movie is a spinoff of a hit French crime show called “Gomorrah” that originally aired in 2014.

As the title suggests, it follows a mobster who has the power of immortality. After the events of the series, he goes into exile, frustrated that he can’t lead a normal existence. In order to feel alive again, he gets involved in a fracas that threatens his empire.

There aren’t many writeups available for this feature either, but the ones that have appeared are upbeat. One or two were disappointed that not all of the characters from the show returned for this follow-up. However, most said it was an unpredictable ride with all sorts of wild twists and turns that would impress fans of the program. The cast i ncludes Ma rco D’A more, Gennaro Di Colandrea and Nello Mascia.

JOCKEY: In this independent feature, an aging, injury-plagued horse jockey strives to win one la st title for a t r a i ler and friend who has purchased what appears to be a championship horse.

claiming to be the rider’s son.

The jockey takes the young man under his wing, leading to further confl icts as the big race day approaches.

The press gave this drama very high marks. A handful couldn’t quite connect with the characters and found it an emotionally cold feature that didn’t resonate.

The vast majority commented that it all felt incredibly authentic and believable from beginning to end. They elaborated by saying that while the approach to the material was low-key, it was still a moving feature with incredible performances.

It stars Clifton Collins Jr., Molly Parker and Moises Arias.

THE LONG NIGHT: A New Yorker searching for parents she has never known finds information that they might be living in the deep south. She convinces her boyfriend to take a trip with her to investigate these claims.

But soon after arriving, the pair find themselves being pursued and kidnapped by a cult who want to make them part of a twisted ceremony believed to bring about the apocalypse.

Critics were not impressed with this independent horror feature. A few enjoyed the fi lm’s use of dark humor and were grimly amused with what they witnessed. But the consensus was that the feature was derivative and dull, picking elements from better genre pictures and pasting them together in an unsuccessful fashion. The cast includes Scout Taylor-Compton, Nolan Gerard Funk, Deborah Kara Unger and Jeff Fahey.

SCREAM: Some 25 years a f t er a br u t a l ser ie s of slayings by a “Gho st fa ce” k iller, a new lunatic begins ta rgeting a group of college students in the same town. The kids investigate the patterns behind the murders and ask for advice from survivors of previous instalments. The entire group learn that to survive, they will have to use their knowledge of various horror movies trends.

The fi fth movie in this popular series is the fi rst not to be directed by late horror legend Wes Craven or written by Kevin Williamson. Regardless, it received more upbeat notices than negative ones.

About one quarter of writeups thought this entry was one-too-many, noting that the new characters weren’t interesting and that the characters made too many questionable decisions for a fl ick poking fun at the genre.

Still, more thought it was a n ef fect ive update w it h some clever obser vations that would deliver what horror fans required. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Ma son Good i ng, M i key Madison and Dylan Minnette headline the fi lm.

BL A STS FROM THE PAST! If you get a kick out of martial arts movies, Arrow Video are presenting “The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter” (1984) as a “Special Edition” Bluray. This Shaw Brothers production from Hong Kong begins with a battle that wipes out a family patriarch and his two sons.

His one sur v iv ing boy joins a monastery. When he learns that his sister has been taken by enemies, he decides that he must fi ght to rescue her and take vengeance on the outlaws responsible.

The picture has been given a 2K restoration and the disc includes a fi lm historian commentary, a newly fi lmed critic appreciation of the title, interviews with the cast members recorded in 2004, a short that commemorates the life of one of the stars (who passed away during production), alternate opening credits and plenty of publicity materials.

Speaking of Kino, they also have several Blu-rays arriving for purchase. “Armageddon” (1977) is a European crime thriller with Alain Delon as a psychologist helping police catch a psychopath with aspirations of being a terrorist.

Bonuses include a fi lm historian commentary track and a trailer.

COMMUNITY

“The Body of My Enemy” (1976) is a French drama about a ma n who hates the textile barons that seemingly run his town. A ll t hat cha nges when he falls for one of their daughters. But sometime later, the lead discovers the family connections to the mob and is framed for a murder. He attempts to extricate himself from his in-laws.

Special features on this disc are the same as those listed for the previous title.

They also have the silent German effort “The Indian

Tomb” (1921). It was written

by Fritz Lang several years before he went on to co-write and direct the 1927 science-fiction classic “Metropolis”. This four-hour, two-part epic follows two adventurers who run afoul of a sinister prince in Bengal. Extras include a 45-minute visual essay from mov ie h i s t or i a n s on t he feature.

Finally, Unearthed Films have a Blu-ray of the independent Japa nese feature, “2LDK” (20 03). It’s about two desperate actresses living together who ultimately tu r n on one a nother i n shocking and violent ways.

The Blu-ray arrives with a

commentary track featuring the cast, a making-of, video from a production briefing, a message recorded for the audience, footage from prev iew screenings, a rchived i nter v iews a nd a photo gallery.
