What does it take to have a long, happy marriage? SENIOR MARRIED COUPLES GIVE ADVICE ON LOVE By Dee Velasco For the Sun

V

alentine’s Day is just around the corner, a day to show that special loved one how much you love them. Couples who have been married for quite some time talked to the Sun about how they’ve made their marriage work. Twila and James Moots have been married for 62 years. They married in 1961, and then shortly after that the young couple moved to Gallup to begin their lives together. Twila said they don’t do anything special for Valentine’s Day; it’s just another day for them. In fact, they have never really done anything on the day since they married. “When we got married, we both were busy being in school obt a i n i ng ou r ba chelor’s degrees in education,” Twila said. “Besides, we really didn’t have a lot of money to spend on Valentine’s Day.” Twila laughed when asked how they stayed together so long, saying she really didn’t know. “Patience, you have to have a lot of patience,” Twila said. “I also think you have to have

You have to make Jesus a part of your life and guide you to what you’re supposed to do.” James explained with a laugh that his wife is really forgiving and doesn’t get into trouble intentionally. “There are things we go through that are irritating, but we just overlook them and we don’t make a big deal out of

7

them,” James said. “First off… forgiveness, there’s times you just have to forgive and go on from there, second of course is having love.” Twila added that being a team is important. “You have to work together – not against each other – and be willing to give and take, I think that’s a big part of it too,” she said.

Twila also noted that if it’s not Valentine’s Day and one of them brings home flowers, that makes it extra special. “He did it without having to feel like he had to, I feel Valentine’s Day is like having to do it and it doesn’t have that special meaning to it,” Twila explained. When asked to identify one thing that couples don’t do as much anymore, they both brought up communication. “They don’t communicate as much because they are on their cell phones,” Twila said. “Even when you go to a restaurant you see the whole family on their phones and that’s pretty sad.” Along with communication, both added that couples need time alone, and suggested perhaps putting the kids to bed early to use that time for each other. A not her couple t hat spoke to the Sun was Gloria Underwood and Tom Bischoff, who have been married for 17 years. They were both born and raised in Gallup. Under wood s a id she wanted to keep her maiden name. When it comes to celebrating Valentine’s Day, both

Underwood and Bischoff said they don’t really celebrate it at all, just a little. Bischoff said he’s not much of a celebration guy and that’s okay with his wife. “I’m a pretty quiet guy who leads a quiet life,” he said. Und e r wo o d s a id t h a t Bischoff still brings her flowers and they’ll pick out a vase at home and display it, which she said is pretty nice. Having been married for 18 years, they said for the most part it has been a pretty easy-going marriage. Underwood said that they both get along well and think alike for the most part. Having things in common works for them, Bischoff said. “Accepting each other for what we are, having a late marriage considering our age, we’re both retired and have no kids to take care of,” he added. He stated both of them are fi nancially secure and don’t have those pressures as a young family does. Underwood added that letting each other have their own time helps for themselves and their marriage. “We let each other do our

The concerned father told Marquez that he was watching his son play basketball, and at one point a foul occurred in the game. The man said his son fouled another kid, and as his son was walking away Mayes walked up to him and allegedly slapped him on the butt. The child reportedly told Mayes not to touch him in that

way, but the man kept following the kid. He allegedly put his hand on the k id’s back and then slid his hands Glenn Mayes down to tap the boy’s butt again. T he ma n sa id h is son smacked Mayes’s hand and told him to not touch him again. According to Marquez’s report, Mayes continued to follow the young boy and kept touching his butt. The boy’s father said his son eventually ran up to him crying and said that Mayes was touching him inappropriately. The man said he told Mayes not to

touch his son, but then he and his son were kicked out of the gym. According to the man, Mayes was still inside referring the game after he and his son had been kicked out. When Marquez went inside to talk to Mayes, he claimed not to know what the officer was talking about. Marquez arrested Mayes and placed him in handcuffs. As he was escorting him outside to his police car, Mayes saw the young boy and his father. According to Marquez’s report, when Mayes saw the young boy, he chuckled and smirked and said “It wasn’t

Man leaves scene of car accident after allegedly injuring two people Staff Reports

A

man named Brandon Barbone has been charged with careless driving, great bodily harm by vehicle, and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident. On Jan. 28 Gallup Police Officer Timothy Hughte was dispatched to the intersection of Highway 66 and Armand Ortega Boulevard in response to a vehicle that had reportedly hit a pole. When he arrived at the scene, Hughte saw the vehicle pushed up against the southeast traffic light of the intersection. He met with the two people

who were still in the vehicle. According to Hughte’s report, the man was wedged between the front passenger seat and the dashboard. The woman in the backseat had a large cut on her forehead. Hughte was able to help the woman by stopping the bleeding from her forehead wound. But when he went around to the passenger’s side door to help the man out of the vehicle, he saw that the door was locked and jammed. He had to break the window to get to the male victim, who was unconscious and had to be woken up. When Hughte woke the man up, he noticed he also had a cut on his forehead. Medical staff

had to forcefully remove the car’s door to get to the man. Before Hug hte ha d responded to the call, Metro Dispatch had received a call about two men who had left the scene of the crash and had been dropped off at a Loves truck stop. Officers drove to the truck stop, picked up the two men, and drove back to the scene of the crash. Hughte met with Barbone, 29, from Church Rock, and according to his report the man seemed very distraught. He said he had not been the one driving. According to Hughte’s report, Barbone had blood on his nose, which was crooked. He also appeared to

be “stupefied as he talked and stuttered.” Hughte noticed that Barbone had bloodshot, wat er y eye s, Brandon Barbone and he allegedly could smell the odor of alcohol coming off his breath. He was taken to the Gallup Indian Medical Center before Hughte could question him further. After speaking to Barbone, Hughte talked to the other man who was found at the truck stop. He would only say that someone lost control of the vehicle. He wouldn’t say where he had been inside the vehicle,

and he refused to answer any more questions. He was transported to the Gallup Detox Center after it was determined that he wasn’t injured in the crash. Next, Hughte spoke to the people who had called in the accident – employees from the nearby Allsups convenience store. They said they saw two men get out of the car after the accident and start walking westbound on Highway 66. They then got picked up by another vehicle, which headed westbound on Highway 66. One of the employees had video footage of the incident. After speaking to the convenience store employees, Hughte headed to the Gallup Indian Medical Center to talk to the three people who were injured in the accident. According to

The woman said that the man, who was later identif ied a s Justin Hollowell, was parked outside her house and was honking his car’s horn. The woman said she had a court order stating that Hollowell, 35, from Church Rock, wasn’t supposed to be around her.

The woman said Hollowell was standing outside her home cussing at her. Another NMSP officer was able to back up the woman’s claims. Gallup Police Officer Jarad Albert responded to the call. When he arrived at the scene one of the NMSP officers told him that Hollowell had pulled up to the driveway in a Chevrolet SUV. In a video, Hollowell can reportedly be seen honking his horn outside the woman’s home. He then gets out of his car and pulls out a GoPro camera. He tries to open the door of the NMSP patrol vehicle that is parked in the driveway. When he can’t open the door, he sits on car’s hood instead. He can be heard in the video screaming “F*** State Police!” The woman explained that

the restraining order was put in place when Hollowell was arrested by GPD Sgt. Matthew Graham after he assaulted her while she was wearing her police uniform. He was also charged with battery after he attacked Graham. The assault happened on Aug. 4. According to court documents, the jury trial regarding the assault charges is scheduled for March 21. According to A lber t’s report, there was no damage to the NMSP patrol car and no injuries to anyone involved in the Jan. 27 incident. He fi led an arrest warrant for Hollowell on the charges of aggravated stalking and intimidation of a witness. He arrested Hollowell later that day. rlando Smith was doing donuts in a movie theater parking lot with a child in the backseat when police made contact with him. On Jan. 30, around 6:15 pm, Gallup Police Officer Julio Yazzie was on patrol near Red Rock 10

Theater, 3711 Church Rock St., when he noticed a gray Dodge Ram truck spinning the tires and going in circles in the empty lot. Yazzie saw the vehicle leave the parking lot, and he began to follow it. The vehicle went east on Church Rock Street, but Yazzie was able to catch up with it as it

got on to Tse Yaniichi Drive. As he performed a traffic stop and walked up to the truck, Yazzie noticed a young child in the backseat and a woman in the passenger seat. Yazzie met with the driver, Smith, 41, and asked him why he was burning out donuts in the theater parking lot. According to

Yazzie’s report, Smith said he was cleaning the mud off his tires. Smith said he hadn’t been drinking, and Orlando Smith when Yazzie did a Standard Field Sobriety Test on him, he wasn’t able to see any signs that said otherwise. Smith said he was out “checking the mail” and was going to go home afterward. The woman in the truck confirmed that neither she or Smith

had been drinking, and she backed up Smith’s story about checking the mail. The woman said that Smith was “just showing off.” When Yazzie told the woman that Smith would be going to jail that night, she said she would take the blame. Yazzie did a Standard Field Sobriety Test on the woman, and she also passed. Metro Dispatch told Yazzie that Smith had a warrant out for his arrest, so Yazzie arrested him for the warrant, reckless driving, and child abuse. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 15.

GAS STATION MURDER | FROM PAGE 8 another. Verbal pandemonium ensued as Skeets accused the woman of having sex with Kinlicheenie enroute to the gas station.

Then Hughte went to speak to Barbone. He initiallty maintained that he wasn’t the one driving, but when Hughte said there was cellphone footage of him behind the wheel of the vehicle, Barbone broke down crying. He admitted to being the one driving. According to his report, Hughte noted that

Barbone’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and he could still smell the alcohol coming off his breath. Due to his injuries Barbone was unable to do a Standard Field Sobriety Test, but he did consent to a blood test. However, Hughte couldn’t get a blood test approved until 8 am the next day. The results were

not included in Hughte’s report. After the blood test, Hughte spoke to the male victim again. He explained that they were coming from a party at the Motel 6 at 3306 W. Hwy. 66. The man had suffered a concussion and he also had the cut on his head. The woman broke several bones in her face and had

multiple cuts on her head. She also suffered some possible inner brain bleeding and some spinal fractures. She had to be flown to another hospital for further treatment. Barbone was arrested for the previously listed charges. His second detention and preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 13.

The situation escalated towards violence when Skeets punched Kinlicheenie. From there, Kinlicheenie drove his truck to the back of the gas station to get away from the two men. In an interview with GPD officers, Billy said that after

Skeets finished arguing with the woman and she departed from the scene, he hopped back in the r ide a nd told Billy to drive to the back of the gas station. According to Billy, Skeets jumped out of the vehicle, reached into the green truck, and stabbed
