What is important about a flag? part of the Navajo Nation and Zuni Pueblo region. In different parts of the region you may see, along the American Flag, the New Mexico State Flag, the Navajo Nation Flag and sometimes the Flag of the Zuni Pueblo.

The flag of the state of New Mexico is one of the most unique and simplistic of the state flags. The rich and complicated history between the Natives and the Spaniards is ever present in many aspects of New Mexico culture and most prominently on the New Mexico State Flag.

This flag contains a Zia sun symbol in red on gold, the very same colors of the Flag of Spain. The Zia sun symbol is an ancient and sacred symbol of the Zia Tribe. The center element is a group of four overlapping brown shapes representing the four states of the Navajo Nation and a larger darker brown rectangle in the center representing the portion of land allocated by the US Government as part of the 1868 Treaty along with the Navajo Nation Seal. The Navajo Seal is a white circle containing elements of industry, home, cornstalks which represent fertility and sustenance and the Sun which represents the times of dawn and dusk which are sacred to the Diné.

The top design is encapsulated by a Navajo Rainbow of red, yellow and blue which represents protection, the restoration of harmony and balance and a connection to the land.

The flag of the Zuni Pueblo is simplistic in design, a field of white with the “The Great Seal of the Zuni Tribe” featured in the center. The Zuni tribe is a small Native American pueblo nestled in western New Mexico, known as the Zuni Pueblo or Halona Idiwan’a. The Zuni people are very invested in their cultural heritage which includes language, history, art, and ceremony. The Great Seal of the Zuni,

which is featured prominently on this flag of the Zuni Pueblo, contains a rainbow which symbolizes moisture and a step design which represents the cloud. The 6 stars at the bottom represent the cardinal directions of the Zuni, the squash blossom necklace represents Zuni Jewelry, which is a symbol of abundance and the melons and corn represent the harvest. The Zuni flag serves as a representation of the Zuni people and their connection with their heritage, livelihood, and nature.

Wild Thing brings the thunder for 30th anniversary TOP DINÉ RIDERS, PAST CHAMPIONS, NEW ENTERTAINMENT ON TAP

“The boys are back!”

“Expect the unexpected!”

These words have been plastered on posters seen around Gallup at the start of summer for many years. These posters signal that one of the premier summer events in Gallup and the Four Corners is ready to electrify both residents and visitors once more.

WildThing Championship Bullriding has been bringing the thunder to Red Rock Park every July for over 30 years.

Three decades of some of the top bull riders in the country and across the world facing off against some of the best bucking bulls in the country.

Larry Peterson, coordinator for Wild Thing, spoke to the Sun June 27 about the landmark occasion.

“It’s crazy to think it’s the 30th [show],” Peterson said.

“That’s a long time for an event.

It has been about 20 years since Wild Thing became the number one open bullriding in the southwest.”

“We have all the top Diné riders coming, [like] Cody Jesus [and] the current Indian National Finals Champion bull rider Robbie Taylor,” Peterson said. “We have three or four past Wild Thing champions

returning this year.”

Peterson highlighted other Brazilian riders, some of whom compete in the PBR, as well as riders that come from across the country from Georgia, California, Texas, Oklahoma, to up north from Canada.

In addition to the riders and bulls battling it out in the arena, guests will get to see the

fan-favorite Champion Wooly Riders, where six young champion riders who won their spots will now compete for the top prize.

There is the tense game of Cowboy Poker, where the boldest card players around play a few hands while a bull circles the group. The game has garnered international attention due to the battle of wits between each player as well as the bull.

Wild Thing continually brings new entertainers to the show, for which Peterson voiced his enthusiasm.

“We have a brand new funny man, Colt Hart, coming this year. I think everyone will enjoy him. He’ll be real great for the crowd, real high energy,” Peterson said.

Then for its 30th year, sponsor JiffyLube will bring a spectacular fi reworks show that is touted as being bigger than ever. With the City of Gallup unable to hold their own show this Fourth of July, Peterson said Wild Thing is stepping up with their display.

“Our [fireworks] show is different. It’s really intense and goes up at once and is pretty entertaining,” he said.

A COMMUNITY EFFORT

A show the magnitude of Wild Thing requires many sponsor s a nd suppor ter s to come to fruition, which Peterson emphasized.

“I want everyone to pay attention to who our sponsors are because a big show like this can’t happen without sponsors,” he said. “We want guests to be aware of the [businesses] who help us put the show on and to support them in return.”

Key sponsors listed on the poster include Gallup Propane Service, Navajo Tractor Sales, Laroc Inc., Pinnacle Bank, Rico Auto Complex, Thunderbird Supply Company, Walmart, Castle Furniture, Red Rock Security & Patrol, and many more.

Then, as was reported in last week’s issue, one of Wild Thing’s largest supporters is Manuelito Navajo Children’s Home. The home has become synonymous with Wild Thing for over 25 years as they provide parking and concessions for all guests.

“It’s [the home’s] biggest fundraiser of the year, so we want everyone to come out and give them their support as

[1] – Pawn Shops – These companies accept personal property, such as jewelry, rugs, electronics, cameras, guns, power tools, etc. as collateral for loans based on the value of goods. Most will lend you less than ½ of the item's value. You then will have several months to repay the loan and are typically charged a very high interest rate while your items are in pawn.

Some will charge other fees for storage or processing fees. Many times, the individual must pay the interest fees and charges on a monthly basis and when the time period ends for the individual to redeem their personal property, they must pay the original amount borrowed plus any accumulated interest, fees and charges. If you cannot repay the charges or default on any of the terms of the pawn arrangement, then the pawn shop can keep your property and sell it. The pitfalls are: [a] The determination of the value of the goods to be pawned is very subjective, which may result in “under valuing of expensive items” which, if not redeemed, result in a major profit on resale of the items; [b] Interest, other fees and charges are not standardized and many times the borrowers do not fully understand what they are being charged; and [c] borrowers can get trapped in debt when the pawn shop continues rolling forward the pawn arrangement with new rates or allows additional pawned items; and [d] this type of Credit preys on low income folks and/or people with limited education and financial knowledge. Rule of Thumb: Avoid this type of loan if at all possible.

[2] – Car Title Loans – These companies ask you to sign over the title to your auto as security for a loan representing only a fraction of its value. Interest payments, storage costs and insurance fees can quickly add up, making it very difficult or impossible to repay the debt. If you default, the company takes your car and sells it. Here again the value can be undervalued and interest and other charges can be very high. Rule of Thumb: Avoid this type of loan if at all possible.

[3] – Some others to watch out for: Debt Consolidation loans are made to pay off several other debts [mainly credit cards]. Cash Advances through Credit Cards. The main concern with both is very high interest and other charges.

elcome to another look at highlights coming your way on Blu-ray and DVD. There are plenty of interesting features arriving this week, including a sequel for a major horror franchise. So, if you can’t make it out to the movies this week or need to stay indoors, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

BIG NEW RELEASES!

BIG G EO R G E FOREMAN: Also known as Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World, this biopic tells the story of, well, exactly what is detailed in

the extended title. It tells viewers about his impoverished childhood, rise to the top of the boxing world not once but twice, as well as a near-death experience that resulted in a move to serving the church.

Critics were mixed about the fi nal product and it earned a few more negative reviews than positive ones. Those who enjoyed the movie liked the cast and stated that the story being relayed was incredible and that they wouldn’t have believed it all if it wasn’t actually true. Unfortunately, more felt that it was overly sentimental, tried to cover too much material, and ultimately didn’t

delve deeply into all of the unusual twists and turns the figure’s life has taken.

It stars Khris Davis, Forest Whitaker, Jasmine Matthews, Sullivan Jones and Lawrence Gillard Jr..

CLAYDREAM: This documentary focuses on innovator Will Vinton, who developed and pioneered a technique of claymation animation while attending college at Berkeley. After winning an Academy Award for his work and forming his own company, competitors in his field began appearing and a feeling of disenchantment began arising at his production house. Using interviews with many of those involved as well as animators whose work he inspired, the film shows this figure’s rise and fall.

The press was taken by the feature. One or two complained that the movie lacked focus and didn’t manage to make a specific argument about its subject. The rest appreciated the approach, saying it was an honest portrait of a figure, detailing the highs and lows of his career without succumbing to hero worship.

Other animators like Nick Park, Bill Plympton and Craig Bartlett are interviewed in the feature.

EVIL DEAD RISE: The latest chapter in the Evil Dead franchise isn’t a sequel to the 2013 reboot of the original. Instead, it tells a story about a woman visiting her estranged sister and her family in their apartment in order to repair their relationship.

When someone in the household fi nds a recording of the Necronomicon and plays it aloud, they are attacked by demons and some of them succumb to possession.

Notices were extremely good for this horror film. A small contingent sugge s t e d t h a t while individual sequences were excellent, the movie d id n’t come t oget her or m a ke a big imprint on them. All others called it stylish and terrifyingly grotesque, noting that the energy level was off-the-charts

‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ can’t compete with character’s earlier adventures

ack in 1981, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford gave us Raiders of the Lost Ark, a dynamic action film set in the late 1930s mimicking old adventure serials.

The film broke box office records and won four Academy Awards (it also earned a Best Picture nomination).

Two expertly produced, award-winning, fast-paced sequels followed, cementing an iconic trilogy. In 2008, a follow-up arrived using ‘50s Cold War science-fiction flicks as its inspiration. It wasn’t as effective, but still had its moments.

Now, 42 years after the or i g i n a l , t he 8 0 -ye a r- old Ford returns for one more k ick at the ca n. However, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny brings the actor back, but without the direct input of Spielberg or Lucas.

Gallup Community Health keeps doctors, patients close

C

oming up on its first anniversary, Gallup Community Health is buzzing like a beehive and already outgrowing its space.

The nonprofit clinic offers primary care for patients of all ages, as well as reproductive health care, urology services, LGBTQ+ health care and medication-assisted therapy for opioid use disorder. Care is offered regardless of patients’ ability to pay.

Since opening in August, GCH has gone from zero to seven providers and just under 4,000

patients. Three more local providers are waiting in the wings for insurer approvals and should join the staff over the summer.

“All of the people we’re in the process of bringing on are all from here originally and we’d really like to be able to keep them here,” founding Executive Director Dr. Valory Wangler said.

The clinic was born in Wangler’s backyard, an idea that bubbled up among colleagues.

“We started brainstorming about what we thought were the greatest barriers to care in the community and how we thought we might be able to make the biggest difference,” she said. “It was

and being part of the community – they were going to leave the community.”

They settled on a familiar model: a Federally Qualified Health Clinic, and set to work starting GCH. It will celebrate its first anniversary July 7, the day its first employees came on board.

Wangler was formerly Chief Medical Officer at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services, where she founded the Family Medicine residency program. Six of her core staff have also worked at RMCH at some point in the past. One physician assistant is from out of state.

The doctors all maintain privileges at RMCH, and hope to develop that relationship so they can admit patients and include them in rounds.

One area where GCH has really stepped up is prenatal care.

The clinic started offering those services in December after RMCH closed its Labor and Delivery unit last year.

“That’s been great for patients, not to have to go to Grants or Albuquerque for care,” Wangler said. “You need 12 to 15 visits, at least, over the course of a pregnancy, so that is really difficult to do outside of the community.”

She’d like to expand the amount of specialty care the clinic offers, including behavioral health, but that’s going to take more space, as well as people. GCH is already outgrowing its space at 2022 E. Aztec Ave., although Wangler said she likes the location.

“There is a fair amount of foot traffic in this area and there is a bus stop right in front of the clinic.

We really wanted to be accessible to as many people as possible,” she said. “I don’t want to be someplace you have to get in the car and drive 15 minutes to.”

Help may be on the way from

SB 7, which passed the Legislature this year.

The bill created the Rural Health Care Delivery Fund, which set aside $80 million to help set up new rural health clinics in counties with fewer than 100,000 residents by defraying operating losses for up to five years, and help existing clinics expand services. Right now the state Human Services Division is surveying providers on what type of projects will seek funding. According to the state’s timeline, applications for funding will become available in September, grantees will be announced in November and funding should start in January.

“For right now we are just going to keep making space where we are and manage with what we have,” Wangler said. “It’s certainly a priority to get a little bit more space.”

With space at a premium and a lot of working patients, GCH offers appointments on Saturdays and until 8 pm on Thursdays.

The after-work appointments have been so popular the clinic is expanding them to Monday through Thursday evenings starting in July.

The GCH staff are grateful for the community support the clinic has received in its first year, Wangler said, and patient satisfaction is part of what fuels the mission.

“Whenever patients are content with the care they receive, whenever they are telling their friends and family to come here for care, that’s definitely one of the highlights and one of the things that makes us feel like we are doing the right thing, meeting a need and being successful,” she said.

Juries of their peers TEEN COURT DEBUTS IN MCKINLEY COUNTY

A

mericans grow up learning that if they get into legal trouble, they have a right to be judged by a jury of their peers. That’s tricky when the offenders are teenagers. However, a new program in McKinley County’s Community Services Department aims to provide that fair judgment to educate those teenagers.

In the new Teen Court program, teens are the offenders, judges and juries. They do have adult oversight, of course, but the experience is designed to make them think about how they landed in the system and how they would dole out penalties for exactly the types of issues that brought them to the courthouse steps.

Teen Court isn’t new in the state. McKinley County joins 11 other counties.

McK inley County Community Services Director Denisse Riff le heard about the idea from colleagues in Santa Fe and Torrance counties at a conference a couple of years ago and brought the idea home. It won the support of county commissioners and management, so she set to work on policies, procedures and training manuals.

The program is not a judicial process, Riffle said, and participation will be strictly voluntar y. Youngsters and t hei r pa r e nt s mu s t s i g n off on the commitment to participate.

“We hope that the juveniles will get a clear understanding of the criminal justice system. We also hope that by going through the process as NEWS

McKinley County Community Services Director Denisse Riffle youth, it will deter them from conducting criminal activity [and] getting into trouble later in life,” Riffle said. “It may lead to them eventually becoming a law enforcement officer or an attorney, opening their eyes to the criminal justice system and the opportunities they have on the other side of it.”

Teen Court is still waiting for its first referral, which cou ld come from Ga llup McKinley County Schools, cour ts, Battered Families Services or local law enforcement agencies.

The GMCS board approved an agreement to make referrals May 20, and the Teen Court team has spoken with leaders at Rehoboth Christian School.

Ri f f le a nd Teen Cou r t Ma nager Tau na W h it ma n expect refer rals from the school district to pick up when the new school year starts in

the fall, but until then Teen Court is ready to take referrals from Magistrate Court and other sources.

Magistrate cour ts have limited jurisdiction and handle DWI cases, misdemeanors and traffic violations. The only juvenile cases that would go to municipal court are traffic violations. Referrals from schools will be for offenses that are lower level in terms of the criminal justice system: truancy, vaping, possession of drugs or fi rearms at school, fighting and bullying.

For young offenders, the process starts with a referral to the program. Community Services will contact the parents and schedule an intake appointment, where they will do a needs assessment to identify and address any underlying issues that may be causing the youngster to act out.

“From there we will give them a court date for our next Teen Court…[their] peers will hear their case and deliberate and provide sanctions. Those

sanctions will be read to them and their parents,” Riffle said.

Afterward, the teen would come into the Community Serivces office every other week to make sure they’re getting their sanctions completed.

For GMCS students facing suspension or expulsion, the program could keep them in school. Depending on the offense, students w ill be offered the opportunity to go through Teen Court and, if they complete their teen trials and sanctions, avert getting kicked out of school or getting criminally charged.

Spokespersons for GMCS did not respond to requests to interview for this article by press time.

Magistrate Court (and in the future possibly Gallup Municipal Court) will make similar referrals that allow youngsters to go through Teen Court to head off more severe penalties that courts can impose – also dependent on successful completion of Teen Court sanctions. Those

Teen Court Manager Tauna Whitman will include serving as a juror on two or three of their peers’ Teen Court hearings and may also include apology letters to victims or family members and doing community service.

It’s also difficult to get a handle on what movie history inspired this effort. It seems content to repeat elements from previous films, like villainous Nazis (from the first and third pictures), comic relief from a youngster (as in the second movie), along with an artifact based in science-fiction (similar to the last sequel), along with a message involving the importance of family (which has been prominent in the last few titles). It comes across like a greatest hits package rather than something new.

There are also too many baddies introduced early on and the picture spends an unnecessary amount of time focusing on them.

A nd t here’s no way t o get a r ou nd t h i s , but t he heavy use of computer-generated effects is prevalent a nd, at times, distracting.

At t he s a me t i me, t he movie has some interesting moment s. A few fa m i l ia r faces brief ly return and it’s nice to see them reconnect with Jones.

W he n t he pr ot a gon i s t eventually reveals the personal reasons for his bleaker outlook on life, it does resonate (even if the story ultimately fails to do much with it). Mikkelsen is a memorable foe who has an appropriately disturbing but unique motivation and rationale. There is also some fun bickering here and there between the lead and Helena. And even t hou g h t he mov ie c ou ld have done w it h les s CGI, the opening train-set action scene r a i se s a sm i le a nd builds some excitement.

Add it ion a l ly, t he f i n a l

act delivers an interesting a nd i nt r i g u i n g t w i s t , a s well as a big choice for its protagonist.

The f i na l product isn’t entirely necessa r y. It ha s some hit and miss elements and is much too long (extending almost 30 minutes over the other four pictures in the

series). However, there are still a few fun moments and effective nostalgic bits.

I f it weren’t a pa r t of such a prestigious franchise, I believe my response to the movie would be more upbeat than it is. As such, I’m giving it a modest recommendation. To better appreciate

the film, it’s better that one goes into Indiana Jones and th e Dia l of De stiny w it h tempered expectations. The movie is far from a mess, but it also can’t compete with some of the lead’s ea rlier adventures.

The Batters Intervention Program is a “psychoeducational” curriculum that can be tailored to be age-appropriate for young offenders. BFS will offer a 16-week program that has youngsters participating in weekly group sessions.

“It’s reviewing what they already think about certain things to give them ideas about how to change it,” Nakai said.

Council that we can refer them to.“ So far, Keep Gallup Clean and Beautiful has agreed to put youngsters to work for Teen Court community service sentences; Community Ser vices is also approaching other agencies where shor t-term work might be appropriate.

Until the referrals start rolling in, five youngsters between the ages of 13 and 16 years are volunteering, training in mock trials to serve as

bailiffs and jurors, so they’ll be ready for the first case when it comes. These volunteers are not disciplinary referrals, but youngsters who might consider careers in law enforcement or the legal profession.

“We train with them as jurors and bailiffs,” Whitman said. “With the bailiffs it’s how to run the court and pretty much assisting the judge.

Jurors are going to be deciding the sanctions that teen court participants will be getting.”

Featured DWI Austin Evans June 22, 5:14 pm DWI (Third) A vehicle crash left a Gallup man, Austin Evans, 25, with minor injuries and a third DWI charge.

Ga l lup O f f icer E l ij a h Bowman was dispatched to 1414 S. Grandview Dr. after a caller advised Metro Dispatch they saw a gray truck collide with another vehicle at the scene. Bowman arrived and found a Ford Escape in the roadway facing south with heavy front-end damage.

Bowman met Officer Julio Yazzie, who said the vehicle’s driver, Evans, was reportedly refusing treatment from Medstar staff. Bowman heard Evans speaking at the scene, where he showed signs of intoxication including slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

Evans denied consuming any alcohol prior to driving and stated he was driving to work.

He also reportedly showed several minor “scraps on his person.” He initially refused to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests but then agreed to take them after being told he PUBLIC SAFETY

would be placed under arrest.

Evans performed poorly on the tests. He then allegedly stated he smoked about a gram of marijuana prior to driving.

Bowman placed Evans, who refused to give a breath sample, under arrest. He was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for DWI (third) and driving with a revoked license.

His pretrial hearing is set for July 11.

GFD rescues people involved in I-40 crash Staff Reports

M

ultiple passengers had to be rescued by fire department crews following a two-vehicle crash on June 24.

Crew C of t he Ga l lup F i re Department responded to Interstate 40 near the 20 mile marker after the crash was reported. When they arrived, they found a black semi truck on its side with the driver trapped inside. The truck was blocking multiple lanes of traffic.

The GFD crew were able to extricate the driver through the roof of the truck. The driver reportedly didn’t have any injuries. The truck wasn’t carrying any hazardous materials.

The second vehicle in the crash was a silver SUV. Medstar staff transported two people from the vehicle to a local hospital.

Shoplifter hides items under her shirt Staff Reports

A

woman was arrested after she was caught trying to steal over $700 in clothing items from JCPenney.

On June 22, around 3:45 pm, Gallup Police Officer Cha rlie Watk ins wa s dispatched to JCPenney at 1300 W. Ma loney Ave., a f ter a woman who was later identified as Christyana Bahe reportedly stole items from the store.

When Watkins arrived at the store, he met with a Tribal Security guard and Bahe, 35.

The security guard handed Watkins a receipt for over $636 worth of merchandise and explained that was how much the items Bahe’s had

tried to steal were worth.

According t o Wa t k i n s’ report, Bahe was standing nex t t o t he security guard d u r i n g t h i s Christyana Bahe interaction, and she kept trying to get up and walk out of the store. She was also “being loud,” according to the report.

According to Watkins’ report, Bahe was slurring her words when she spoke to him and he could smell alcohol on her.

State portion of Gross Receipts Tax drops to 4.875% OTHER CHANGES IN STATE TAX LAW TAKE EFFECT JULY 1 Staff Reports

ANTA FE — The statewide portion of the Gross Receipts Tax will drop to 4.875% on July 1, resulting in changes to the overall rates across New Mexico.

The rate drop is the result of legislation signed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in 2022. That legislation provided the first Gross Receipts Tax rate reduction in 40 years, lowering the statewide portion over two years from 5.125%.

“The new lower rate will help businesses and shoppers all over New Mexico,” Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke said. “The state is in excellent financial condition, and this allows all New Mexicans to benefit directly.”

Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke after the 2023 Legislature also take effect on July 1. Below are some of the highlights the 2023 legislation: HOUSE BILL 547 HIGHLIGHTS: • The new child tax credit in effect for the current tax year will be larger for families with under $75,000 of adjusted gross income than under the original 2022 legislation. Under the

new legislation, the credit will be worth from $25 per child to $600 per child, depending on income. The increase will provide an additional $102.6 million in tax relief on top of the $74 million expected from the original legislation.

About 214,000 of the 292,000 families expected to take advantage of the credit will benefit from the 2023 credit increase.

• The child tax credits will also now be indexed for inflation.

savings of as much as $50 million statewide.

OPINIONS Letter to the Editor AD MISREPRESENTED LEGISLATIVE BILLS Dear Editor, I recently read the advertisement in the Gallup Sun by Entragallup. The ad offered “explanations” for some HBs and SBs that are/were being voted on. The ad writers decided that these bills were about taking away parental rights and I felt so disgusted by how well this ad misrepresented the purpose of any of these bills that I felt the need to respond. It was so

inhumane and tone deaf I honestly thought the ad might be a spoof at first.

Their opposition of HB7, SB 13 and SB397, bills that seek to protect children in vulnerable positions, being explained by the idea that a parent has the right to force their child to give birth in a town where adults who plan to have children have to drive a hour to do so safely and the idea that a parent could force their

child to live in a body that hurts them in a town where children being airlifted to Albuquerque is the norm is almost laughable if it wasn’t absolutely ghoulish. We live in a healthcare desert and adding healthcare centers to schools is meant to help address this need.

The ad also “warned” about HB4 pushing their idea that “felons” shouldn’t vote. I can’t stand behind the idea that a person

who has served their time and is back in the community somehow doesn’t deserve the right to be represented in their government. What was the purpose of going to prison?

If people serve their time and we then ostracize them from society, then we have no hope for rehabilitation. The idea that being automatically registered to vote at 18 is somehow harmful? If you truly believe one person has the right to one vote then why would codifying these rights be detrimental to anyone?

I don’t believe this ad was

written with our community in mind. I feel that it was meant to cause discord and confusion.

The fact that the author isn’t even included tells me as a reader that the information presented was untrustworthy.

I implore readers to approach all information with discernment in this next year and to avoid taking ads at face value especially when the advertiser themselves won’t attach their name to it.

etirement. Ah, that golden period of life we all look forward to. You’ve worked hard over the years and it’s finally time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. But before you sail off into the sunset, it’s essential to have a solid plan in place. There are some crucial questions to answer, so let’s dig in.

1. W hen do I want to retire? The “when” is more significant than you might t h i nk. Ret i r i ng too ea rly might mean you’ll need to stretch your savings for a longer period. Wait too long, and you might not have as many healthy years to enjoy it. The age at which you retire can also affect your Social Security benefits. It’s a complex puzzle, and it’s worth spending time to piece it together.

2 . How much money will I need in retirement?

This is a biggie. You need to

estimate your living costs in retirement. Will you travel?

Do you pla n to spoil the grandkids? Maybe you want to pick up some new hobbies?

All of this will cost money.

And don’t forget about healthcare - a signifi cant expense for many retirees. You’ll also need to consider infl ation; it can significantly erode your purchasing power over time.

3. Where will my income come from? Your days of drawing a regular paycheck are ending, so where will your money come from? Consider all sources of income: Social Security, pensions, retirement savings like 401(k)s and IRAs, annuities, and any other investments. Maybe you plan to work part-time?

It all adds up. Just remember, some sources of income may be taxable, so make sure to account for that.

4. How will I spend my time? This might seem trivial compared to the fi nancial questions, but it’s equally crucial. Staying mentally and

you wish to leave something for your loved ones or a cause close to your heart?

When Watkins spoke to

the store manager, he said that Bahe had come into the store and began stuffi ng items down her shirt. She had also allegedly walked into a changing room, and when she came

out she was wearing clothes that still had the tags on them.

Bahe allegedly tried to walk out of the store’s back door, but it was locked, so she turned around and tried

to walk out a different door, but security stopped her.

Bahe was arrested and charged with shoplifting. Her preliminary examination is scheduled for July 12.

Previously, candidates had 18 months from when they first took the test.

• The Taxation and Revenue must now have a completed tax

credit application before the timeline for acting on the application begins. The bill also shortens the amount of time the Department has to act on a credit application from 180 days to 120 days.

A N E W O L D PL AY: This foreign-language feature from China was scheduled for release at the end of May, but hit a delay and is only now arriving on disc. It tells the story of a clown in a theater troupe who suddenly dies. His spirit arrives in the underworld, where he relives some of the most important moments of his life. These memories are tied into some important events in the country’s history and he attempts to process and make sense of what he has experienced and the lives he has touched.

This picture earned plenty of awards in its homeland and at various international film festivals. All notices were positive, calling the 3-hour epic surprisingly fast-paced, wellacted and moving. They complimented some of the satirical elements and how it examined the history of China in a unique manner.

Tao Gu, Nan Guan and Chen Jianing headline the fi lm.

THE TANK: This independent horror film from New Zealand involves a man and his wife who i n her it an abandoned coastal property that his mom never told him about.

They arrive and fi nd an eerie, u ntouched est ate on t he beach. Baffled, the lead tries

to do repairs and search the house for the answer why no one ever talked about it. He learns the answer after releasing a monster while trying to fi x the water tank beneath the property.

This effor t d id n’t fa re particularly well with critics. About one-third of them thought that the movie was well-produced, featured nifty-looking monsters and delivered the required chills. But sadly, the consensus was that it was a pastiche of older, better creature features that felt unoriginal and left the protagonists undeveloped.

It stars Luciane Buchanan, Matt Whelan, Zara Nausbaum and Regina Hegemann.

BL ASTS FROM THE PAST! If you’re wondering what older features will be appearing in high defi nition, there is a huge number arriving. So many, in fact, that we’re going to have to rush through a few.

It’s important to fi rst note that Arrow Video is releasing Enter the Video Store: Empire of Screams Collector’s Set Blu-ray. It contains some titles from the prime days of Empire Pictures, a production company founded by Albert Band (who would later form Full Moon Pictures). This box contains The Dungeonmaster (1984), Dolls (1987), Cellar Dweller (1987), Arena (1989) and Robot Jox (1989). Two of the films were directed by genre fave Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond), while make-ups effects titan John Carl Buechler (Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood) either directed or co-directed a pair of titles.

Besides the picture upgrade, it includes most if not all of the extras from previous editions.

T he s a me i s t r ue for Waterworld (1995) , the expensive Kevin Costner action picture. It was a cr it ica l a nd box of f ice bomb back i n t he d ay, but has found a fol low i n g after the release of an extended TV version. This set contains 4K Ultra HD and Blurays of the theatrical version, as well as 2K editions of TV cut and the preferred Ulysses Cut (which combines all the footage together into the most coherent edition).

B l u e Underground is giving some of their older catalog titles 4K Ultra HD upgrades.

You can now pick up new

editions of Daught e rs of Darkness (1971) and the excellent chiller Dead & Buried (1981). Please note that Blurays are not included in this edition, so it is only for those who want to own 4K versions of each film without all the bonuses from earlier releases.

Shout! is upgrading a moder n genre classic with a 4K Ultra HD a nd Blu-ray C ol le c t o r ’s Edition of Creepshow (1982). This fantastic anthology f rom d i rector George A .

Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead) with an original screenplay by Stephen King is a wonderfully stylish and effective homage to old horror comics. The picture will look even more impressive with the new transfer and all bonus material from Shout!’s previous edition will be included here, from multiple audio commentaries, cast and crew interviews to deleted scenes and more.

The same is being done to the horror/comedy Motel Hell (1980). This title involves a psychotic pair of motel owners who kidnap customers (and strangely enough, sell smoked meat to passersby).

This 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set includes a director commentary, interviews with the cast and crew, a look back at the female protagonist and a trailer. This creeper movie is fun (it features a great chainsaw duel at the close) and it’s nice to see it getting a picture

upgrade.

Shout! is also releasing some Blu-ray exclusives that will be produced in limited quantities and will only be available to order on their website. The f irst title is Abraxas: Guardian of the Unive r se (19 90) st a r r i ng Jesse Ventura as an intergalactic cop. It has a 2K master of the feature from the best sur v iv ing elements a nd a trailer. Creepshow III (2006) is an absolute abomination of a sequel that has no connection to the previous two chapters. Still, if you want to own it, the disc includes a behindthe-scenes look with cast and crew interviews.
