Wacky Waffles food truck owner brings concerns to city council NEWTON SUGGESTS CHANGES TO FOOD VENDOR ORDINANCE

P

izza, Mexican food, Greek food, hot dogs, cotton candy, and waffles. Food trucks cater to all sorts of cravings, and when multiple mobile food vendors come together, people can eat whatever their heart desires.

Or at least, they can in big cities.

Local food trucker owner Billy Newton, who runs the Wacky Waff les food truck, says that Gallup’s outdated vendor ordinance prevents food truck owners from growing their businesses and being successful.

During an Aug. 8 work session, Newton spoke in front of the city council to voice his concerns and recommend some changes to the ordinance that dictates what a food truck can and can’t do, which was last updated in 2011.

“It was written at a time when food trucks weren’t really a thing in Gallup,” Gallup’s Planning and Development Director C.B. Strain said. “They

In a letter addressed to City Clerk Alfred Albeita, Newton listed the sections of the ordinance he wanted to see

changed.

One of Newton’s major concerns was the time restrictions put on food truck vendors. The current ordinance only allows food trucks to be open from 8 am – 8 pm.

As a food truck that sells waffle sandwiches, most of Newton’s menu items include

breakfast foods. But as he explained to the council, with how the ordinance is currently written, he typically doesn’t start selling food until about 10 am because it takes a long time to get everything set up and the food prepared.

“When it’s looked in that light where we want to do things safely, that leaves [only] a couple hours to sell and then tear down for the end of the day or when we move on to another location,” Newton said.

Newton also voiced concern with the 8 pm closing time, saying that since the ordinance only allows food trucks on private property, many of the businesses that hire him want him to stay open later.

RATTING OUT COMPETITION Another time restriction allows food vendors to be in one space for only four hours.

Councilor Sarah Piano, Dist. 3, said she sees food trucks break that rule often.

“I’m not going to call out certain food trucks, but I definitely see food trucks that are at a location for defi nitely more

than four hours,” Piano said.

“I’m fi ne with it personally, but then … we’re not equally keeping people accountable.”

Code enforcement officers only pay food truck vendors a visit when a complaint has been made against them.

However, Strain said they aren’t high on the officers’ list of concern.

“As code enforcers, [food vendors] are way low on our list. We have more important things to do than harass food vendors,” Strain said. “… It’s a small town [though, and] people don’t like competition.

They’re going to call and rat out their competition and tell us to check them out.”

Palochak announced her resignation from the District 4 chair during the July 25 city council meeting. At the Aug. 8 meeting, Mayor Louie Bonaguidi set the process of finding Palochak’s replacement in motion.

The council has 31 days from July 25 to find Palochak’s replacement.

Bonaguidi suggested asking for letters of intent from people who are interested in stepping into the role. He also told the council they are allowed to make their own recommendations for someone they think would fit well on the council.

Once the Aug. 15 deadline has passed, the council will need to hold candidate interviews. Those would be

conducted in either a work session or a city council meeting. Bonaguidi said the council would vote on a candidate at the next city council meeting on Aug. 22.

As for the requirements for the new councilor, Councilor Sarah Piano, Dist. 3, said she believed the candidates needed to live in District 4, on the west side of town.

“I don’t want to get into a situation where someone has a house on the west side but [they don’t] really live there,” Piano said.

The amount of time the potential councilor has lived on the west side was also a point of discussion.

City Attorney David Eason told the council that the state does not have a residency requirement for city councilor candidates. He advised against setting any time-specific residency requirements.

Candidates have until Aug. 15 to throw their hat into the ring for the District 4 city council position. Stock Photo “I would caution against setting any sort of arbitrary date or time for residents. I think that’s a factor that can be considered, but I wouldn’t want to eliminate people based upon [that],” Eason said.

Anyone interested in the city councilor position needs to send their letter of intent and any other materials (letters of recommendation, resumes) to the city clerk by Aug. 15 at 5 pm.

hat a difference a year makes.

In the thick of the panic, fear and confusion that shattered the joy of the 100 th Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial opening parade last year, it was hard to see how a ny thing good could come from a renegade motorist f leeing police onto the route, scattering the crowd of spectators.

And yet somehow it did.

The incident pressed local behavioral health providers to act quickly to help people process and cope with the trauma the scare induced.

“Ever yone that saw it, everyone that heard about it, the fi rst responders, everyone had some trauma,” Gallup Behavioral Health Investment Zone Manager Debra Martinez said.

Ma r t i nez a nd her colleagues had to scramble to br i ng toget her resou rces to get people the help they needed.

Right away, they found that many people were uncomfortable asking for help. Many more needed help, but they were reluctant to talk about their experiences and feelings.

“We coordinated all these services like on-site behavioral health and we weren’t ge t t i n g m a ny p e o ple t o reach out. The stigma with

So cou n selor s bega n visiting the police and fire departments, metro dispatch, magistrate court and municipal court.

“We understood when we just had it in the [behavioral health] facility no one was going to reach out, but when we reached out to people and went into their facility, it was well received,” Martinez said.

The counselors need a full quiver of modalities to meet people where they are, mentally as well as physic a l ly. S ome a pproa che s aren’t focused on talking, but instead use different exercises to defuse the trauma and help reduce the pain it causes.

After the parade the counselors held a healing ceremony. They hosted talking circles and partnered with 988 mental health emergency

Beer by the dozen stolen from restaurant Staff Reports

A

man tried to steal 43 beers from a local restaurant.

On July 31, around 5:15 am, Gallup Police officers were dispatched to La Barraca, 1303 E. Hwy. 66, after someone allegedly broke into the Mexican restaurant.

According to his report, Officer Patrick Largo noticed that the glass on the restaurant’s front door was shattered when he arrived at the scene.

There was enough space now for a person to have crawled through the broken door.

The officers met with one of the restaurant’s employees, who said the restaurant’s owners were on their way. The employee said he showed up to work that morning and noticed that the front door was shattered. He also noticed several beer bottles laying on the floor.

The officers were able to watch a security video, and in the footage, they could see a man, who was later identified as Creighton Vacit, walking around the business around 4 am. He had very short hair, a mustache, and two visible tattoos. He was wearing a tank top, dark jeans, and black boots.

Vacit, 40, allegedly headed toward the refrigerator in the kitchen and found multiple beer bottles inside. He reportedly took off his shirt and began putting some of the bottles inside it.

He also grabbed several plastic bags to hold more beer.

Around 4:15, the suspect left the restaurant. In total, Vacit PUBLIC SAFETY

Creighton Vacit reportedly walked out with four plastic bags full of beer. The restaurant managers estimated that he stole about 43 beers and that it would cost about $1,200 to fix the broken front door.

After filing the report, the officers left the scene.

However, the restaurant owners called Metro Dispatch around 6:30 am saying they knew where Vacit was. They said he was hiding behind Speedway Central at 1223 E. Hwy. 66.

Largo found Vacit sitting inside a red Chevrolet Lumina with Arizona plates. As Largo approached the vehicle, Vacit got out of the car. He told Largo he was waiting for his friend who was using the bathroom inside the Speedway Central.

Vacit told Largo that his name was “Chris Cellicion.” Largo told him that he was investigating a burglary and placed him in his patrol car. After doing this, Largo approached the Chevrolet Lumina and noticed a Modelo beer bottle on the driver’s side floorboard. There were also two more beer bottles

hidden in the backseat. Officers eventually found 15 beer bottles in the car, all of various brands.

After noticing the beers in the car, Largo spoke to La Barraca’s managers again. One of the managers said she was in the back of the restaurant when she noticed a ripped plastic bag and some beer bottles in a bush. Another person also noticed a man in a white tank top hiding near Speedway before jumping a fence.

Largo found two abandoned beers in a bush about 30 feet from the restaurant. He found a third beer in a plastic bag.

The witness, who was a friend of the restaurant’s mangers, told Largo that he had come over once he heard what had happened. He said he and the restaurant managers were looking around outside the restaurant when he glanced over toward the Speedway Central and saw a man who looked like the man from the security video. He also said he saw Largo speaking to the same man and confirmed that the man sitting in Largo’s patrol car was the man from the video.

After speaking to the witness, Largo walked back to this patrol car to talk to “Chris.” Largo eventually found out “Chris” was really Vacit.

Initially Vacit told Largo that he didn’t know anything about the burglary, and that a stranger had sold him the beer. He said that the stranger had told him the beer was stolen.

Finally, after also speaking with Sgt. Matthew Graham, Vacit admitted to stealing the beers. He was charged with burglary and criminal damage. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 30.

Vanderwagen man charged with abduction, battery Staff Reports

A

Vanderwagen man named Calvin Johnson has been charged with battery after he attacked a woman who was just trying to fill her car up with gas.

On July 21 around 9:30 am, McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Davis was dispatched to a house on Coal Basin Road after a woman reportedly showed up to the house claiming she had been abducted.

When Davis met with the 19-year-old victim, she told him that her car ran out of gas on State Road 118 and Armand Ortega Boulevard near the

Allsups Store. A man who was later identified as 35-year-old Johnson stopped and asked the woman if she needed help.

After Johnson put gas in the car, the woman reportedly tried starting her car but it wouldn’t start, so Johnson offered to give the woman a ride to her house in Church Rock.

T h e wo m a n go t i n t o Johnson’s gray Pontiac Vibe, and he began driving west. He got onto Mentmore Road, and drove north, heading toward Carbon Coal Road. According to Davis’s report, the woman asked Johnson why he was going that way and he told her it was “another way around.”

A fter a while, Johnson

pulled off the road toward a gate on a hill. He then parked the car and offered the woman meth and marijuana.

The woman repeatedly told Johnson she didn’t want the drugs, but he kept asking her to join him in the backseat of the car.

As the woman sat in the passenger seat of his car Johnson began to lay the seat down. At this point the woman was still refusing Johnson’s advances.

He then tried to pull her into the backseat.

The woman tried to escape t he situation by open i ng the passenger’s side door, but Johnson held on to her.

in the car’s middle console. The victim tried to grab the gun to “make sure he would not use it against her.”

Jonson asked for the gun back, and allegedly told the victim he didn’t care about her.

The victim was able to partially get out of the car at that point, and she told Johnson she would give the gun back if he let her go. While she was pleading with him, Johnson was still holding on to her and trying to get her back in the car.

The situation continued like this for a while, until the victim fell to the ground. She took that moment to drop the gun and break free from Johnson’s grasp, running toward some trees she could hide behind.

Johnson allegedly yelled out to the woman, saying “she was going to make this worse.”

Johnson began looking for her, but the woman was able to run away. She ran about a mile toward Coal Basin Road.

When Davis asked the victim if Johnson had touched her inappropriately, the woman said he hadn’t. She described Johnson as a man in his 30’s, about five feet six inches tall, with a slim build and missing teeth. She said he looked “like a glonnie” and that he had short hair. She also said he

Around 1 pm, Deputies Elliot Peterson and Brandon Salazar found the Pontiac Vibe at the Speedway gas station at 1320 S. Second St. Davis placed Johnson in handcuffs, and as he read him his Miranda Rights Johnson repeatedly said he did nothing wrong.

Johnson was arrested with false imprisonment and battery. His defense attorney filed a motion for a competency evaluation on Aug. 2, claiming that his client was incompetent to stand trial. The attorney argued that his client’s case be moved to District Court, but the state opposed the motion.

had video footage of Garcia walking into the store around 6:45 am. The officer said Garcia was dressed the same, except she was wearing a tan hat and white shoes when she walked into the store.

Garcia reportedly ran out of the store’s fire exit with the items she stole.

T hompson had Ga rcia return all the items she stole, including the black shoes she was wearing.

In total, Garcia reportedly

stole over $800 worth of merchandise from the Walmart.

The items included a large tent, a black Athletics bag, a gray Ozark hydration pack, a black duffle bag, slippers, two dresses, a set of shampoo and conditioner, three perfume bottles, body lotion, lip balm, hair dye, several thongs, a few bras, a couple shirts, the pink hat, some Claire’s jewelry, lounge pants, some shorts, makeup remova l towelettes, body conditioner and sprays, a red

bandana, and a pack of Q-tips.

Garcia was charged with larceny. Her arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 25.

Gallup woman was arrested after she stole a multitude of everyday household items from a local Walmart.

On Aug. 4, around 7:30 am, Gallup Police Officer Vincent Thompson was dispatched to the Walmart at 1650 W. Maloney Ave. Metro Dispatch told Thompson that the suspect, a woman who was later identified as Nariah Garcia,

Tohatchi man has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor after he allegedly sexually abused three minors.

According to court documents, Bryon Yazzie Jr., 22, sexually abused three minor victims between August and November of 2020. He was 19 years old at the time.

Yazzie allegedly met the f irst v ictim, a minor who was between the ages of 12 and 16, through Facebook and began a sexual relationship with them sometime in August. On Oct. 20, 2020, Yazzie engaged in a sexual act with a second v ictim.

The victim told Yazzie “no” and that they did not want to have sex with him, however Yazzie used his size and weight to threaten the victim. On Nov. 5, 2020, Yazzie PUBLIC SAFETY

was wearing a black top, camouflage pants, white shoes, and a pink hat.

According to his report, Thompson found Garcia, 23, at the Rio West Mall entrance. He allegedly saw three full bags in a Walmart cart. Garcia said she’d bought the items at Walmart, but that she’d lost the receipt.

Thompson drove Garcia back to Walmart in his patrol vehicle, and they met with a Walmart Asset Protection Officer. The officer said she

engaged in a sexual act with a third victim. Yazzie gave them alcohol, causing them to become intoxicated and incapable of participating in the sexual act.

On Nov. 26, 2020, the second v ictim disclosed to a family member that Yazzie had assaulted them two days prior. During a subsequent interview with law enforcement, Yazzie admitted to sexually abusing the victim.

Yazzie was indicted by a grand jury on June 15, 2022.

Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bu janda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI A lbuquerque Field Office, announced on Aug. 3 that Yazzie had been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Yazzie pled guilty to sexual abuse of a minor, sexual abuse and aggravated sexual abuse on

Featured DWI John Hoskie June 18, 9:28 am Aggravated DWI (Third) A Mentmore ma n, John Hoskie, 53, left the scene of a crash before he was arrested and charged with his third DWI. Ga llup Off icer Gabr ien Lee was dispatched to the

intersection of Patton Drive and East Highway 66 after a call came in for a two-vehicle collision. Lee arrived at the scene and met one of the drivers, Hoskie, sitting in a tan Chevy Malibu with heavy front end damage.

Hosk ie repor ted ly told Lee he was trying to get to a fr iend’s house when he crashed into another vehicle.

Both vehicles were reportedly blocking traffic and had to be towed out of the road.

Lee reportedly saw Hoskie display signs of intoxication as he spoke, including bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, a nd smel l i n g of a lcohol.

Hoskie then stated he consumed an unspecified drink about four hours prior to the incident.

After stepping out of the vehicle, Hosk ie agreed to perform the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. However, he performed poorly on the tests and Lee placed him under arrest based on his investigation. A witness at the scene

told officers she had seen the victim vehicle turning left onto East Highway 66 while Hoskie drove up and turned right onto Patton Drive, striking the other vehicle in the process.

Hoskie was transported to Gallup Police Department for the breath test, where he posted sa mples of .26 and .24. He was then taken to McK inley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI (third), revoked or suspended license, a nd no insura nce and registration. His motion hearing is scheduled for Oct. 26.

Navajo Nation Council commends veteran funding resolution Staff Reports

INDOW ROCK, ARIZ. — Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley (Tachee/Blue Gap, Many Farms, Nazlini, Tselani/ Cottonwood, Low Mountain) joined Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren on Aug. 7 as he signed into law Resolution CJY70-23, which amends Title 12 of the Navajo Nation Code to resolve conflicting language and allow more funding from the Navajo Nation Veterans Trust Fund to be set aside to be used for programs, services, and benefits for Navajo veterans.

The legislation was sponsored by Council Delegate Carl Slater and received overwhelming support and approval by the Navajo Nation Council during the summer session in July.

In accordance with Title 12, the Navajo Nation Council is required to set aside 4% of the Navajo Nation’s projected revenues in the annual Comprehensive Budget. Half of

the 4% is allocated for veterans programs, services, and benefits and the other half is allocated for the veterans housing program.

Slater said the resolution provides a “technical fix” that rectifies conflicting language that was previously adopted in 2018 and 2021, and aligns with the wishes of Navajo veterans.

“The new language conforms to what our veterans have called for and prevents another funding shortfall for Navajo veterans benefits and assistance, as we experienced during last year’s comprehensive budget,” Slater said. “I am very thankful to all of the veterans who brought this issue to the table and for my colleagues and [President Nygren] for supporting the legislation.”

Legislation co -sponsor Council Delegate Seth Damon stated that the amended language will provide more financial stability for the Navajo Nation Veterans Administration and ultimately help many Navajo veterans and their families.

elderly and many have disabilities that limit their ability to provide for their families. With this resolution, we offer our appreciation to veterans and their loved ones for their service and sacrifices for us all,” Damon said.

Curley offered her appreciation to the Council, Nygren, the Navajo Veterans Administration, and all Navajo veterans. The 25th Navajo Nation Council approved the legislation during the summer session by a vote of 18-1.

The quarterly TIBC meetings prov ide a forum and process for tribal nations and federal officials to work together in developing annual budget requests for programs under the U.S. Department of the Interior. Several Navajo Nation fu nd ing pr ior ities include public safety, infrastructure including roads, educational and scholarship funding, and forward funding for critical programs to help in the event of federal government shutdowns.

The Navajo Nation also continues to advocate for advanced funding for critical programs and services to prevent disruption in services for the Navajo people. Council members also requested additional funds for school safety, publ ic s a fet y oper at ion s and maintenance, and road infrastructure.

USAYAN, ARIZ. — Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley and Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren were among several tribal leaders who joined U.S. President Joe Biden on Aug. 8 in an area near the Grand Canyon known as Red Butte, as he signed a proclamation establishing the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument in Arizona.

‘Meg 2: The Trench’ feels as if it was hastily thrown together

RATING:  OUT OF  RUNNING TIME: 116 MINUTES This film from Warner Bros. Pictures is playing exclusively in theaters.

The Meg arrived in cinemas in August of 2018 and was a surprise success at the box office.

It split critics, but this reviewer admits to having enjoyed it. The

film was slickly-produced and had its tongue firmly planted in its cheek, yet still managed to create a few memorable characters, as well as some enjoyably over-the-top action scenes.

Meg 2: The Trench is the follow-up, and while the movie attempts to do the very same thing, it doesn’t work nearly as effectively. Despite the talent involved, it’s a bizarre hodgepodge that jumps jarringly between multiple genres and lacks a unified tone.

W hen Jona s agrees to explore the bottom of the Mariana Trench with Jiuming and his crew, Meiying decides to stow aboard. It isn’t long before things go horribly wrong. The group discovers a secret and illegal mining operation at the bottom of the trench and are attacked by not only megalodon sharks, but other prehistoric beasts. They must survive both human and aquatic threats, identify the sinister masterminds within the Mena One operation and get back to the surface in one piece.

There’s certainly a lot (perhaps too much) going on story-wise, as well as dealing with

returning characters and several new ones who are added into the mix. Unfortunately, most of the newbies don’t stand out and many of these figures appear to serve as little more than cannon fodder.

The movie also suffers from some truly creaky dialogue, including a character who states, “That was too close!” after narrowly avoiding death. Frankly, it’s difficult to get a handle on whether or not the movie is using and poking fun at these clichés intentionally, because the lines aren’t delivered with enough of a wink to make them funny.

And as mentioned, there’s a strange juggling of genres including action, horror and comedy.

It’s not impossible to pull this task off (the original movie, as well as 1999’s Deep Blue Sea balanced these elements effectively and still maintained a consistent

elcome to another look at highlights arriving on Blu-ray and DVD. There’s a major blockbuster arriving, as well as some intriguing independents and international fare. So, if you can’t make it out to the movies this week or need to stay indoors, give one of these titles a try!

BIG NEW RELEASES!

97 MINUTES: A group of hijackers take control of a c o m me r c i a l passenger aircra f t f ly i ng from London to Los Angeles.

Little do they know that an undercover Interpol agent has infiltrated the group onboard. After learning of another unexpected complication (a nuclear device has been hidden on the plane), the protagonist also discovers that their fuel supply has dwindled and that the airliner will crash in 97 minutes unless he does something about it.

This independent thriller popped up on streaming services a month ago and hasn’t received many reviews. A few online critics have posted articles that aren’t very complementary. Most complained that the plot was full of holes, the fight scenes weren’t well edited together and that the entire film felt lackluster.

It stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Alec Baldwin, MyAnna Buring, Jo Martin and Michael Snow.

THE A NGRY BL ACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER: Inspired by Mary Shelley’s novel

Frankenstein, this modern-day take on the story follows a teenager with a brilliant scientific mind. When the youngster’s brother is killed in a shooting, her family is grief-stricken and she becomes obsessed with recovering his body and curing his condition. Of course, these experiments cause trouble for the lead and her family.

The press was generally upbeat about this chiller. A small number thought that despite some good moments and themes, the film just didn’t come together effectively. They also complained that it was hampered by a weak finale.

However, the vast majority thought that the movie was a fresh and interesting take on the literary classic. They stated that it contained clever satirical elements, disturbing shocks and relatable characters.

The cast includes Laya DeLeon Hayes, Denzel Whitaker, Chad L. Coleman and Reilly Brooke Smith.

FAST X: The big release of the week is the latest Fast and Furious franchise title, which some have reported as the first movie of a two-part series finale (there is also talk of yet another spinoff film).

For mer criminal t u r ned government agent D om i n ic Toretto is visited by an old foe out for revenge.

When this figure targets all of those whom the protagonist cares about, Toretto sets out to protect his extended family and eliminate the threat.

Reaction wasn’t quite as strong for this effort as for previous titles, although it was

slightly more positive than negative. Those who disliked the movie wrote that the fi lm was too long and overstuffed.

They called the plot nonsensical and thought everything was so absurd and over-the-top that the human drama fell flat.

However, slightly more called the feature an improvement over its immediate predecessor and suggested it delivered epic car chases that would please fans of the franchise.

Vi n Diesel, M ichel le Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel, Charlize Theron, John Cena, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson and Jason Momoa headline the film.

NIGHT OF THE ASSASSIN: Also known simply as The Assassin, this period

effort from South Korea follows an extraordinarily talented assassin who leaves his master and hides after learning that he has a serious heart condition.

He travels to find treatment and rents modest lodging with a peasant family in a remote village. When the killer learns that the household is being tormented by a local gang, he decides to do something about it. Of course, there are further complications when figures from the lead’s past show up in town.

There haven’t been many reviews for this picture so far, but thus far the ones that have appeared are decent. They comment that there isn’t anything particularly unique about the story, but admit that it is visually impressive, well-acted and features a likable lead.

OTHER PEOPLE’S CHILDREN: This French comedy/drama involves a 40-yearold single woman. Having never been a parent, the lead spends her free time enjoying hobbies and life in general. Out of the blue, she unexpectedly meets and falls for a single father with a 4-yearold daughter. The woman takes a shine to the little girl, but finds the relationship increasingly complicated as she tries to impress and win approval from

The press wrote very highly about this picture. A few naysayers griped that the protagonist was whiny and that the second half of the movie became overly melodramatic. Everyone else admired the film and its personal touch, noting that the situation presented was relatable and that the characters were both clever and honestly written.

It stars Virginie Efira, Roschdy Zem and Chiara Mastroianni.

SCARLET: Here’s another foreign-language effort from France. This period film features a World War I veteran who returns home to find himself a widower and new father to a baby girl. He moves to a remote part of Normandy, but as the youngster grows up, she becomes lonely and wishes to leave her home. A witch casts a cryptic prophecy and she tries to decipher what it means while meeting new suitors and searching for opportunities elsewhere.

Overall, critics enjoyed this picture. Almost one-quarter of them groused that the movie had trouble deciding if it was a fantasy or a drama and did

neither successfully. Still, the majority remarked that the film looked gorgeous and that the unusual, low-key tone actually helped create uncertainty about where the characters would all end up.

The cast includes Raphaël Thiery, Juliette Jouan and Louis Garrel.

SUN MOON: A young American woman is stood up at the altar in this faith-based feature. Stunned and embarrassed, she isn’t sure what to do next.

A couple at her church offer the main character a position teachi ng Eng l i sh i n Ta iwa n.

She accepts the terms and leaves the country for the first time. Now completely out of her element, the woman does her best to make a new start abroad.

This picture premiered on a Christian streaming service and is now arriving on disc as a DVD-only title. There aren’t any reviews currently available for this title that don’t come from religious websites. The ones that appear on those sites seem to like the film, saying it gently attempts to showcase a person

THE WRATH OF BECKY: This sequel to the 2020 genre film Becky features the teenage, orphaned lead character trying to live a quiet life after fighting off a group of neo-Nazis. Now staying with a senior, the lead’s peace doesn’t last long when members of a right-wing terrorist cell roll into town. They kidnap the protagonist’s dog and she responds as only she knows how… by hunting them down mercilessly and wiping them out.

Members of the press were generally amused by this sequel.

A handful of them did dislike the picture, stating that the mix of laughs and gruesome shocks didn’t make for a tense or exciting show. All others called it enjoyably silly and appreciated the outrageously creative ways in which the teenager enacted revenge on her tormentors.

For the time being this is a DVD-only release. Lulu Wilson, Seann William Scott, Denise Burse, Jill Larson, Michael Sirow and Courtney Gains headline the picture.

BL ASTS FROM THE PAST! As usual, this week is filled with plenty of older titles receiving upgrades.

Arbelos is putting out a Bluray of Chameleon Street (1989).

This well-received comedy/ drama about a black, put-upon husband who decides to alter his public persona in order to get ahead in life. The movie has been given a 4K restoration and comes with two audio commentaries, an examination of one notable scene and how it evolved during the writing and shooting

process, a discussion with the director as well as an archival interview with the f i l m m a ke r.

Additionally, t he r e’s a n archival documentary on the production, pre-production character exploration footage, an award-winning short from the director and trailers.

Adam Sandler enthusiasts can now pick up the comedy Little Nicky (2000) on Blu-ray courtesy of Shout! He plays the title character, a kindly son of Satan who is told by his father to return his two brothers to Hell and prevent them from causing havoc on Earth. It also starred Patricia Arquette, Harvey Keitel, Rhys Ifans, Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr., Rodney Dangerfield, Reese Witherspoon, Dana Carvey, Jon L ov it z , Kevin Nealon, H e n r y Winkler, Ozzy Ozbourne, Rob Schneider, Q u e n t i n Tarantino and many more. Shortcut words: lazy or efficient?

mericans like being the best at things.

We’re the best at baseball, jazz, freedom, national parks—pretty much anything Ken Burns has already covered. Yes, living in the Land of Opportunity is glorious. Now, I’d like to award us (and, by us, I mean U.S.) a super-sized gold medal for smashing words together more efficiently than anyone else in the world.

Because Americans value efficiency, we combine multiple words into one super word. One way we do this is through contractions.

cont r a ct ion s t hat lea d to babie s. I’m t a l k i ng about com bi n i n g t wo wor d s t o make one short word. These words include don’t (do not), we’ve (we have), a nd ca n’t (can not). Yes, contractions increa se our efficiency so we have more time to manage ou r bu rgeon i ng stock portfolios while refilling our Big Gulps (for free).

But some cont ra ct ion s can be tricky.

Have you ever been tripped up by “should’ve?”

Shou ld’ve is a contraction for “should have.” For example: I should’ve wor n sunscreen when we were at the zoo.

This is a tr uism for me even on cloudy days. I can get a su nbu r n th roug h a t- sh i r t du r i ng a sola r eclipse.

What about “should of”?

A s A mer ica ns, sometimes we talk so quickly, we say things like “shoulda,” which is a n even shor ter way of s ay i ng “shou ld’ve.” M a ny people mistakenly think this phrase is “should of.”

“Should of ” is incorrect and should never be spoken, t y ped, or ot her w ise communicated. The sa me r ule applies for “must’ve” (not mu s t of ), “cou ld’ve” (not cou ld of ), a nd “wou ld’ve” (not would of ).

I f someone you ca re about uses “should of,” wait until you have some one-onone time with them, calmly sit t hem dow n , a nd t hen

gently correct them. Please don’t correct them in public; that’s the quickest way to lose friends and end up with a house full of cats (I believe the politically correct term is “fur babies”).

In genera l, contract ion s l ike “shou ld’ve” a re still rega rded a s infor ma l speech, so, if you’re writing your doctoral disser tation or cover letter to be hired a s a l aw yer, avoid t he s e shortcut words. However, in everyday conversations, feel free to contract away. After a l l, t he f i r s t a mend ment g r a nt s u s f r e e s p e e c h — and—since it’s the first one, that probably means that it’s

egarding your retirement, few things are more exciting than picturing all the relaxing beach vacations, meaningful family time, and newfound hobbies you might enjoy. But here’s the catch: to make these dreams a reality, you’ve got to have the financial stability to back them up. Enter the world of diversified retirement portfolios.

First, let’s decode the term “diversified retirement portfolio.” Imagine a jigsaw puzzle. It has many pieces that contribute to the complete picture.

Similarly, a diversified retirement portfolio combines different investment vehicles that provide income for your golden years.

Why is it so important?

one camp before veering jarringly to another.

Scenes of the divers heading to the lowest sections of the ocean, dealing with serious

submersible problems and fighting to stay alive at a mining facility are played relatively straight. Yes, the odd humorous comment is made, but Jonas acts genuinely concerned about the safety of his stepdaughter.

And naturally, the villains are deadly serious and glowering throughout.

Then there are scenes that delve into horror as the divers are pursued and eaten by creatures deep within the trench. A few jolts are effective, like an unsettling depiction of what happens when a person in a cracked submersible suit visor goes through the depressurization process.

But at the same time, there’s comedy up above as returning characters James “Mac” Mackreides (Cliff Curtis) and DJ

(Page Kennedy) ward off armed mercenaries sent by the villain.

They trade amusing quips, but don’t seem as worried about their mortality. It all feels like an oddly stitched together patchwork that lacks drama, excitement or effective humor. And weirdly enough, the megalodons themselves end up disappearing for extended portions of the film.

That is, except for the finale.

The movie goes utterly bonkers in its final act when all parties do battle at a vacation resort. These sequences play like a big-budget Sharknado! picture, featuring gags so utterly preposterous that this reviewer couldn’t help but laugh (and wish that the entire film had adopted this approach).

Even the actors appear to be smiling as characters are mowed down all around them.

It’s another example of the movie jarringly switching tones, but in this case the change delivers laughs and wild visuals. The point-of-view shot from inside the mouth of a meg featuring swimmers being gobbled down and chomped up is hysterical.

There are a couple of outrageous moments and a crazy finale, but the screenplay feels like it was thrown together hastily in a boardroom meeting without any concern toward developing believable situations, genuine thrills or proper story arcs for its characters. In the end, Meg 2: The Trench is only for fans of B-movies, and even they would be wise to save some time by sneaking in and just enjoying the final 20 minutes.

The event brought the relative dearth of trauma-trained therapists in McKinley County i nto h ig h rel ief, prompting the therapy community locally and across the state to address that problem. One issue is a shortage of clinical supervisors for the years of fieldwork that leads to licensing – two years for those with masters degrees and three for those with associates or bachelors degrees.

“I did a needs assessment at the state level in 2021,” Sindy Sacoman, CEO of SVS E v a lu a t ion a nd P rog r a m Development Specialists, one of the collaborators in the program and author of the grant that funds it, said. “The number one fi nding for behavioral health providers across the state was the lack of supervision, whether because they don’t have super v isors on staff, or there are supervisors but they have such a high level workload that they can’t supervise their staff.”

However, if the business has more than the required amount of parking spots, Strain said putting a food truck in the parking lot wouldn’t be a problem. It really all just comes down to safety.

“We don’t want to make it hard on [food truck vendors],

but we still have to make sure the public is safe,” Strain said.

Strain and Newton both mentioned food truck parks, places in big cities such as Albuquerque that ser ve as a designated place for food trucks.

To allow for more space, Newton suggested doing away with the language in the ordinance that limits food trucks to private property. He noted that public places such as Ford Canyon Park would be a great

place to set up a food truck.

He also proposed the idea of doing a “Food Truck Friday.”

Overall, Newton said his main goal is to just make things easier for code enforcers and food truck owners alike.

“A lot of my goal here is to make this easy for code enforcers. There’s a lot of arbitrary codes I see in [the ordinance] that I think could be removed…,” Newton said.

Strain agreed that the ordinance needed to be updated.

“I think food trucks are here to stay, I don’t think they’re going anywhere, and I think they’re a good thing for the community,” Strain said.

For now, City of Gallup staff will take a look at the ordinance and take Newton’s ideas into consideration. They will come back to the council with some changes to the ordinance, and the council will discuss those at a future city council meeting.

It’s a “Grow Your Own” program intended to enhance training for local therapists for two rea sons: to ser ve the need in Gallup, and to keep local therapists in the community. A shared frame of reference helps providers help patients because they’re already familiar with the local culture and its challenges.

“It’s better if we get people from the community instead of trying to bring people from the outside to do counseling with individuals in our community. Who better to solve the problems tha n people who live here?” Martinez said.

“There are a lot of things that people who are not from here might not understand.”

Rio R a ncho -ba sed A r t Romero, LPCC, will lead the training. He’s been working on substance abuse and trauma training since the 1980s and was instrumental to getting

UNM-G’s health and human service degree program recognized by the Counseling and Therapy Practice Board.

He also helped with the fi rst train-the-trainer program.

While he’s from outside, his goal is to build local capacity.

“When you have somebody from the same community and culture, that empathy is going to be natural,” Romero said.

“They’re already going to have their own experiences. Having grown up in the same community is huge.”

Although the new track was born of the immediate trauma of the parade incident, the training also covers trauma from abuse, assault, m i l it a r y ser v ice, a dver se childhood experiences and anything else people have been ca r r y ing a round for years.

health professionals at no cha rge. Collaborators a re the City of Gallup Behavioral He a l t h , S B S E v a lu a t io n and Program Development Specialist, and the University of New Mexico-CBH. The training will include e duc a t ion a nd pr a c t ic a l experience, monthly group meetings, reviewing case and treatment plans and individual sessions with each therapist. It’s designed to help them facilitate client screening to determine the levels of trauma they have and what kind of trauma they have experienced; complete intake to the program to be treated, help with a ssessments to identify clients’ strengths and needs; and facilitate treatment plans – the goals and objectives for the client to achieve while they are going through therapy.

In addition to lear ning how to better help patients, the therapists will learn some self-care skills like working in consultation with others, recognizing the secondary trauma they may suffer and avoiding burnout.

To be eligible, providers must hold a New Mex ico counseling license such as LMHC, LMSW, LPC, LPCC, LCSW or LADAC; have two years of counseling experience as a licensed provider; work and provides services in McKinley County; and have at least three hours of training with “trauma informed care” or be willing to take a course.

So far, six people have signed up.

T he t r a i n i ng w i l l la st through June 30, 2024 and will fulfill continuing education requirements for those who complete the program.
