New Mexicans compete in North American Indigenous Games

ith the hot Canadian sun beating down on them, Indigenous athletes from all over the world competed in the 10th annual North American Indigenous Games July 15-23 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Games were founded in the ‘70s. This year, over 756 Indigenous nations participated in the competition.

Eig ht y- s even s t udent s from New Mexico competed in “Athletics” competition of t he Ga mes, a nd si x of those students were from the Gallup-McKinley County Schools district.

These athletes were chosen based on their times in competitions at home.

Ga l lup’s cross cou nt r y coach Kyle Benally was one of New Mexico’s assistant coaches. He got to pick the athletes that would make up the New Mexico team. In doing so, he had to consider who would be the best fit for each race.

that competed in the Games si nce t hey s t a r t ed cro s s country. In an interview with the Sun, he talked about how great it was to see his athletes compete.

“The best part was honestly seeing them perform at their peak in an international competition,” he said.

“Seeing them w in meda ls they honestly didn’t think they had a chance to win and being so proud to see them on the podium for a lmost every race we were in [was the best part].”

Gallup High School freshm a n Mykei a Vicent i won four gold medals: one in the women’s 2K Cross Country race, another in the women’s 1,200 -meter race, a nother in the 800-meter race, and a final one in 4x400 meter relay as a part of the New Mexico team. She won a silver medal as part of the relay team that pa r ticipated i n the 4x100 meter relay.

She sa id the 800 -meter race was the “scariest” race she’s ever competed in.

“It was definitely a great opportunity to go compete, especially [in Canada. I got to see] how fast other people are. I did have somewhat of a competition, especially in the 800, that was the scariest race I had out there,” Vicenti said. “I won by about 0.1 second, I barely beat [one girl].”

When she wasn’t competing Vicenti said she enjoyed meeting the other athletes, e specia l ly t he g i rl s f rom other New Mexico schools.

“I consider them family now, and some of them even sisters,” she said.

Building sister-like relat io n s h i p s w a s g r e a t fo r Vicenti because a lot of her family members weren’t able to make the trip to Canada.

Her brothers and sister usua lly watch her race when the competitions are in New Mexico. Her mother was able to travel with her, but she was the only family member present; ever yone else watched the competitions from home.

Like Vicenti, he also commented on the different level of competition the international games provided.

“My favorite par t about competing was that I actually had competition,” he said.

Gallup High School senior Theodore RoundFace won two bronze medals: one in the men’s 8K Cross Country race and another in the men’s 3K. He placed fifth in the 800-meter race.

“My favorite par t about competing in the games was the atmosphere and the people there,” he said. “The competition was pretty fun too.”

A ll three athletes were honored during the Sept. 25 GMCS school board meeting.

“I could go on for days about all three of these athletes,” Benally said during the meeting.

He pr a i s e d e a ch one indiv idually, star ting with Peterson.

“I look forward to seeing how much he ca n achieve as time progresses when he goes off to run at the collegiate level,” the coach said.

“To see him blossom into the athlete he is today is truly amazing to see,” Benally said.

“He ha s taken ever y thing that we have given him in terms of what things to eat, in terms of his nutrition and performance, to sleeping.”

Despite being the youngest competitor for GMCS, Benally said Vicenti’s future looked bright.

“She’s already blossoming into the athlete everybody already knows she can be and then some,” Benally said.

He noted t hat t h is is just t he beginning for many of them. “ T h i s ju s t opened t he door for a lot of these athletes to push themselves to another level, because it’s not just local competitions anymore, it’s international competitions that could possibly open more doors to the Olympic trials or anything else that is coming down in their direction,” Benally said.

“I’m just fortunate enough to be able to help them walk through the first initial door.”

McKenny Vento funds give students without homes a chance at success

A

ccording to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, over 2,500 people were homeless in New Mexico in 2022.

A child without a home still has to go to school, though, and Gallup McKinley County Schools has a program to help kids stay focused on their studies by providing them with the tools to combat their situations, whether it’s complete homelessness or housing insecurity.

Faith Kline, the district’s coordinator for counseling and general education, said that about 2% of the district’s population was homeless during the 2022-2023 school year. That’s

roughly 259 students.

The McKenny Vento Act, which President Ronald Regan signed into law in 1987, helps the district support those students who are facing homelessness. GMCS receives $24,000

each school year through the McKenny Vento program. This money helps support the students and gives them the supplies they need to be successful in school.

Additionally, the district

received almost $353,000 inn American Rescue Plan money dueing the 2021-2022 and 20222023 school years, but this funding source will dry up at the end of the school year.

“So we’re able to provide students with necessities and things through this program to ensure that even if they’re struggling in their home life and experiencing some type of homelessness that we still try to give them some resources to access their education and be in school as much as possible,” Kline explained.

The district provides students with necessities, such as hygiene supplies, clothing, and feminine products. A local food pantry supplies kids with fruits, vegetables, nonperishable items, and frozen foods.

Students also have access to laundry detergent.

Besides a lack of food or clean clothes, poor vision impacts a student’s ability to learn. The district sets up optometrist appointments for students to get their eyes checked, and they’ll even pay for the glasses.

The McKinney-Vento model features a diverse list of circumstances that describe homelessness, such as: individuals who lack a fi xed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence; students who may share housing with other people due to a loss of housing or economic hardship; students who are living in hotels, motels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to a lack of alternative adequate accommodations; and/or students who are living in emergency or transitional housing.

In addition to being unhoused, children suffer from a multitude of issues due to the lack of quality housing. “... Inadequate housing could mean things such as no electricity, no running water,” she said. “If you’re having problems with bed bugs, if you’re having problems with lice, there’s just a lot of things that can qualify a student and his or her family for this program that we want to get out to the public.”

In order to apply for the program, every GMCS family fills out a residence questionnaire at the beginning of the school year. Parents may indicate that they’re in shared housing at this time, or that they’re experiencing some form of homelessness.

But social workers keep their eyes and ears out for students in need of secure housing.

It could be that student’s friend, a teacher, or staff member who reaches out to the district’s social workers.

It’s the ultimate goal for social workers to get a student help no matter how they found out about the student’s situation.

From there, the family is notified and the type of help they need is addressed during a meeting. Forms are filled out, and it goes from the school to Kline, who is the homeless liaison.

But this isn’t a one-time thing. Kline and the social workers check in with the families every two to three months.

“Obviously we do our best to never turn down a family, especially those in need,” she said. “So with the additional ARP funding we received we’ve been able to support even more

Homelessness is a tricky subject, Kline and Harper admit. Communicating with the families in a sensitive and culturally appropriate manner is the key to success.

“We serve a large population of Native American students and sometimes in their culture, houses not having running water is normal,” Kline said.

“So we also have to ensure that when we’re qualifying students for McKinney Vento that we stay culturally appropriate and make sure that these families know why we’re qualifying them and [see] if they would really like the support.”

Kline said when hard times arise — and yes it’s a sensitive topic — at the end of the day the district needs to support students in all capacities. “... This program has really helped [with] ensuring that students experiencing any form of homelessness or hard time … are supported,” she said.

‘Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie’ is familiar, but will entertain the kids

RATING:  OUT OF  RUNNING TIME: 92 MINUTES T h i s feat u re f rom Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon opened in cinemas on Friday, Sept. 29.

Anyone who is a parent with young kids is assuredly aware of the PAW Patrol animated series. It seems to appeal to just about every little one out there, serving as a ratings juggernaut since its 2013 debut. After 10 seasons and a hit 2021 feature film, the characters are back on the big screen once again.

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie feels like an attempt to update the show (or at the very least create a spin-off series) by adding superhero elements into its story. The picture is very formulaic, but it will deliver the heroic pooch goods for its target demographic.

For t ho s e u n f a m i l i a r with the franchise, the story involves a group of almostall canine characters who do their best to protect the citizens of Adventure City. They include group leader and young boy Ryder (Finn Lee-Epp), police dog Chase (Christian Convery), fire dog Marshall (Christian Corrao), aviator canine Skye (Mckenna Grace), recycler pooch Rocky (Callum Shoniker), aquatic rescue pup Zuma (Nylan Parthipan), construction dog Rubble (Luxton Handspiker) and newest canine team member Liberty (Marsai Martin). When the villainous GALLUP FUN!

Victor ia Va nce (Ta ra ji P. Henson) attempts to cause a meteorite crash and harness the falling rock’s remarkable powers, things don’t go as planned.

The PAW Patrol end up recovering the space stone crystals, which amplify their individual strengths. Now superheroes, they are even stronger, but that all changes when Vance teams with Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo) to steal their powers, leaving the dogs at a disadvantage.

It’s a slicker-looking show in comparison to the television series. The widescreen framing adds a bit of oomph to the proceedings and the bigger production allows for some grander set pieces, including the meteor crash and scenes of animals flying, or blasting fi re and water into the air. And the message is sweet, even if it is overstated and bluntly delivered.

The story focuses on Skye, who hasn’t grown as large as the other dogs and feels underappreciated. Despite moments of insecurity and worry for Skye, leader Ryder constantly reminds her and the other dogs that they are valued for their personal strength, uniqueness and ability to work as a team.

The power-crystal concept is an interesting one and the screenwriters manage to eke out a fun moment or two whenever their special powers are transferred. When Liberty discovers her skillset, it results in an amusing rescue. Mayor Humdinger gets an entertaining moment rampaging down the streets of Adventure City.

And there is one very funny joke featuring a cat that very briefly ends up in possession of a special stone.

Blu-ray/DVD Roundup for October 6, 2023

elcome to another look at highlights arriving on Blu-ray and DVD. This week is a bit quieter than usual, but it does contain a major genre title or two that will impress those looking for a chill.

BIG NEW RELEASES!

TH E MEA N ON E: I f you’re looking for some early Ch r i st ma s - t hemed entertainment, this independent horror/comedy begins in a sleepy mountain town where a vicious, Grinch-like figure attacks a family. The youngest daughter is the only survivor of the ordeal. 20 years later, she returns home on Christmas Eve, seeking to catch and kill the mysterious figure.

Critical reception was not pa r ticularly strong for this effort. A small number were amused and called it a slight but fun holiday slasher with some wild moments that would entertain genre fans. Unfortunately, everyone else claimed it wasted its great potential. They wrote that the film was overly somber and didn’t either scare or provide the necessary number of laughs to recommend.

PREY: The fi fth movie in the Predator franchise is a prequel that takes place in the Comanche nation 300 years ago. A young woman wants to become a great hunter like her brother, but is ignored by other member s of her c o m mu n it y.

After sighting the title monster while fol low i n g a hunting party into the woods, she decides to hunt it down herself in the hopes she will prove herself as a true warrior.

Critics were very upbeat about this feature, which premiered on Hulu and is now arriving on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. A small number didn’t think it measured up to the original, delivering an overly familiar narrative that didn’t deliver thrills or make the most of its intriguing concept.

Still, the majority thought its stripped-down story worked and that it delivered on its promise, providing chills and a progressive, satisfying battle between the lead and the creature.

City finds short term fix for Lexington Hotel MCKINLEY COUNTY, NAVAJO NATION PITCH IN WITH FUNDING

wenty-seven people live in the Lexington Hotel as of Oct. 3. But come the end of the year, they may have to move out.

But on Sept. 8, Gallup’s Interim City Manager Jon DeYoung received a letter stating that the Lexington Hotel would cease operations Sept. 30 due

orga nization that ra n the Lexington Hotel, had a services agreement with the city and the New Mexico Finance Authority. The city used federal CARES Act money to fund the hotel and its operation. Now they’re looking at other funding sources.

“We set up t he oper a tions of the Lexington Hotel through CARES Act funding and COVID money,” DeYoung explained. “A lot of that has dried up, so coming up with a sustainable solution is really what we’re looking for.”

The City of Albuquerque [which is where Heading Home is based out of] came in and they started open i ng up shelter s, pro viding Heading Home with finances [and] a lot of funding to start these new prog ra ms a nd new shelter s,” Collins said. “[The former CEO] just got ahead of himself in terms of solving the problems without doing the necessary accounting, budgeting, or setting up accounts systems for the money coming in.”

In an interview with the Sun, Heading Home’s CEO Con n ie Chavez ex pla i ned what really happened to the money that was supposed to support the Lexington Hotel’s future.

Chavez became the CEO of Head ing Home in May. As part of her new job, she reviewed the nonprofit’s contracts, one of them being the Lexington Hotel one with the NMFA and the City of Gallup.

“I was under the impression that there was another year of funding, that the contract was another year out,” Chavez said.

But as she looked closer, she realized that wasn’t the case. The previous contract ended Sept. 30, and there was no future renewal planned.

Chavez sa id she wa s ex pecting a supplementa l amount of $600,000 for the hotel, but w it hout a contract renewal, that wasn’t happening.

“The money has dried up for all intentional purposes,” she said. “So that’s when we really put the wheels into motion about ‘yikes, what are we going to do?’ As an agency we could not carry the Lexington, we just didn’t have the funding to do it, the disposal income or cash to do it. So that’s when I reached out to my board and to the Cit y of Ga llup, a ny i nterested party to let them know the funding had expired and we were not able to continue

After multiple meetings between Heading Home, the Cit y of Ga l lup, McK i n ley County, the Navajo Nation, and other interested parties, funding was pooled together before the Sept. 30 deadline.

In a previous inter view with the Sun, DeYoung said that the “bare-bones” operational cost of Heading Home is about $50,000 a month.

T hat mea nt t hat t he cit y needed to find $150,000 to make it to the end of the year.

Chavez sa id that limiting the hotel’s budget won’t change its operations that much.

“The Lexington is already r u n n i ng at ba re bones.

said. “They are short staffed there, so what that means is they’re probably not going to fill those positions. But other than that, it’s running the same way.”

The question that rema ins now is: how w ill the Lexington Hotel survive in 2024? Once the new year comes, Heading Home will no longer be responsible for the hotel.

DeYoung said the city is still working to find a sustainable solution to the funding problem.

As of Oct. 3 though, no solution has been solidified.

“We want it to be successful, and I’m happy to say that the City of Gallup has rallied because they see the importance of the Lexington as well. … I’m confident that there will be another nonprofit or the city who will take it over,” she said.

Hocking a loogie WOMAN SPITS ON NURSE Staff Reports

A

drunk woman was charged with battery on a health care worker after she allegedly spit in a nurse’s face.

On Sept. 17, around 6 pm, Gallup Police Officer Daniel Brown was dispatched to the Gallup Indian Medical Center after a woman, who was later identified as Makalia Johnson, spit on a nurse who was trying

to restrain her.

Accord i ng t o Brow n’s report, when he entered the emergency room Johnson, 21, was restrained with “soft restraints” and appeared to be highly intoxicated.

When Brow spoke to the victim, she explained that Johnson had pulled her IV out and kept trying to get out of the hospital bed.

The victim said she tried to explain the medical procedure

to Johnson, and she tried to tell her that she needed medical attention. In response to the victim, Johnson said she wanted to see a Navajo nurse.

She reportedly called the victim a “white b****” and was very verbally aggressive.

Three nurses had to hold Johnson down while one of them tried to put the IV back in Johnson’s arm. That’s when Johnson allegedly grabbed the victim’s hand and “hocked a

loogie” onto her face.

After he spoke to the victim Brown spoke to the other nurses who witnessed the situation and they both confi rmed that Johnson spit on their coworker. One of the witnesses said she didn’t see where the spit landed, but she believed it landed on her coworker’s face because she was directly in front of Johnson.

A judge signed a warrant for Johnson’s arrest on Sept. 18,

Makalia Johnson and she was arrested on that same day. She was charged with battery on a health care worker. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 11.

man named Christopher Curtis Begay is facing charges of criminal damage to property after he allegedly broke into a local business.

On Sept. 28, around 12:15 a m, Gallup Police Officer Francescia Henry was dispatched to the Highway 66 Smoke Shop at 200 S. Third St. after someone reportedly broke into the store.

When Henry arrived at the scene she spoke one of the store’s employees, who said the alarm system was going off when he arrived at the store and the front door was broken.

After she spoke to the store empleoyee, Henry was able to watch a surveillance video in which Begay, 32, can allegedly be seen in a black and white fl annel shirt, a black cap, and blue jeans.

The employee estimated

Christopher Begay that it would cost $2,200 to fi x the door.

While Henry was speaking to the employee, officers found Begay at 207 W. Hill Ave. Henr y was also able to speak to a witness, who told her he was walking past the store when he saw Begay hit a window with a pole. He then reportedly walked along Coal Avenue. The witness said Begay “do bad to the shop.

What he did was not good.”

Begay was arrested for the aforementioned charges. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 18.

Zachary Smith Sept. 24, 2:09 am DWI (Third) A Me s a m a n, Z a ch a r y Smith, 27, was stopped for driving without headlights and was eventually arrested and charged with his third DWI. New Mexico State Police Sgt. Christian Roman was patrolling under the direction of the McKinley County Task Force near the intersection of South Second Street and Mesa Street. Roman observed a silver Jeep pass through the intersection without headlights on and followed the vehicle, pulling it over near the intersection

of State Road 118 and Second Street.

Roman conducted a traffic stop, approaching the vehicle and spotting two passengers inside. He met the driver, Smith, who did not provide the requested documentation.

Roman reportedly smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage as he spoke to Smith.

After exiting the vehicle on command, Smith allegedly showed further signs of intoxication including a bloodshot eye and not being able to answer Roman’s questions. He also admitted to consuming two 12-oz. bottles of beer about two hours prior to the incident.

Due to an issue with his eye and his back, Smith was given alternative testing by Roman.

Smith performed poorly on the tests and was placed under arrest. He was transported to the local state police office for the breath test, where he posted samples of .12 and .11.

Smith was then transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for DWI (third), no license, and improper equipment. His pretrial hearing is set for Oct. 24.
